Speaking of Retail Business Holidays Act changes that will allow Sunday shopping, Mr. Wiseman says, "At first blush, I don't like it and will vote against it" However, he'd like to hear from his constituents before a free vote is held as early as next week. A free vote allows MPPs to make personal decisions and not follow the party line. For changes to the act to pass, 66 of the 130 MPPs would have to support the legislation. All 26 cabinet members will support the legislation, Mr. Wiseman says. Since legislation is retroactive to Wednesday, stores can open this Sunday without being charged. Air. Chief Stewart says it's expected the study will begin in early fall with results released in late autumn. The town will then develop a long-range, master fire -protection plan. The fire marshall's study is only one of several reports requested on the town's fire services. Council is forming a mayor's task force to review all information received and address a shortage of volunteer fire- fighters in the rural area. Council, meanwhile, has decided to proceed this year with construc- tion of a new fire hall at Dixie Rd. and Finch Ave. The need for the hall was identified by Dillon Consultants in 1987. Finally, we shop Suddenly, Ontario Premier Bob Rae's New Democrats are governing based on public interest. That was the phrase Premier Rae turned to in finally announcing this week the long-awaited changes to Ontario's Sun- day shopping laws. And suddenly, party policy was less important than the interests of a vast majority of the populace in Ontario. Understandably, there was a mixed reaction to the news in Ajax -Pick- ering. Merchants are wary that Sunday shopping will provide any eco- nomic relief, while local malls and groceries eagerly await the openings. In any event, Sunday shopping provides an opportunity for everyone -- merchants and consumers -- who has been in favor of it. An extensive survey sponsored recently by the News Advertiser showed a clear majori- ty of citizens in Ajax -Pickering were in favor of Sunday shopping. The News Advertiser has always been in favor of Sunday shopping and strongly believes it will show benefits. The open Sunday policy should inject some much-needed life into the retail industry, which has been hit hard by the effects of this recession; for consumers, it's a convenience they have been demanding for the past three years. To its credit, the New Democrats have done what the Liberals couldn't when they were in power. You'll remember David Peterson cavalierly passed the responsibility on to municipalities and washed his hands of the politically charged debate. Time will tell if Sunday shopping is really the salvation retailers have claimed it will be, and whether or not consumers will embrace it. And it is taken for granted that the faucet will do what it is supposed to do: turn the water on and off. But beyond that, a faucet is a focal point that draws the eye of anyone who looks at the sink. It can also be an eyesore or a nuisance if the fin- ish is peeling and water drips con- tenuously from the spout. If any of your current bathroom faucets fall into that category, new faucets for all the fixtures can go a long way toward dressing up the bath and ending the aggravation of leaks and drips. It pays to shop carefully, because of you don't, you may be forced to replace the replacement sooner than you would like, according to Gary Felsinger, senior product manager. Faucets, at Kohler Co., a leadinL manufacturer of plumbing and spe- cialty products. Typically, a faucet is replaced about once every seven years. About half the faucets are replaced because the homeowner wants a new style. The others are replaced because they no longer work prop- erly, or because the finish is pitted or peeling. Differences The product manager points out that there are some real differences in faucet construction that directly ,affect the faucet's quality and lifes- pan. Many faucets use washers to con- trol the flow of water. However, washers wear out and must be replaced. Besides the inconvenience of hav- ing to disassemble the entire faucet mechanism, it may be difficult to get replacement parts for these faucets if they are not made by a well-known manufacturer. A faucet with a disk cartridge will cost more initially, but it will pro- vide many years of drip -free ser- vice. And because the faucet's working parts are all contained in the cartridge, replacement is easy. Cartridges are either plastic or • ceramic, with ceramic being the best quality, Mr. Felsinger says. There are variations in the con- struction of the faucet body, too. Look for a faucet with a hard, smooth finish that has a deep lustre and no imperfections. Life-long dream of acting career one step closer for Denis O'Connor student By BRUCE FROUDE Durham Staff DLRHAM - Most people dream of acting. Count Scan Krishnan in that number. What makes the Denis O'Con- nor High School student stand out from the crowd is that he actually has a chance at making his dream a reality. Krishnan has been accepted to the American !Musical and Dramatic Academy in Man- hattan, New York, this year. "I always wanted to be an actor, even when I was younger." admits the 19 -year-old Whitby resident. "Nobody believed me, I would love to prove them wrong." He went to open auditions in Toronto and performed well enough to garner one of the 250 spots for the fall semester. He will enrol in the two-year integrat- ed course, where he will receive training in acting, singing and dance. Krishnan has never acted in any community plays, but he's been in numerous productions at his Ajax high school. March was a good month, as he won both the solo voice and bass/baritone competitions in the Oshawa Kiwanis Music Festival. Not bad, considering he took up singing seriously less than a year ago. "I suddenly found out I was able to sing," says Krishnan, who is tutored by music teacher Eric James of Whitby. "We've had him here for about eight months and he really applies himself when he sings," says James. "He's very focused and diligent." In the past, Krishnan didn't give much thought to singing as a career. His mindset changed when he realized a singer -actor has more chances for success than an actor. "You don't have much work if you don't sing and dance,,, says Krishnan. "I don't think he'll ever be a classical singer, but he will do well in certain types of singing," says James. "He's quite capable of handling himself with different styles of singing." To further broaden his talent base, Krishnan is heading to India this summer to study several instruments. Once he returns to North America, it's off to Broad- way, which is a stone's throw away from the academy. On top of getting an education at the prestigious school, Krishnan will have complimentary tickets to Broadway plays. This allows the students to get out and do home- work. "That's just fantastic," says Krishnan, who rates Robert Spiner and Roddy McDowell as two of his favorite actors. Spiner concentrates on televi- sion (he is Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation) and McDowell is most famous for the Planet of the Apes movies, but Krishnan's ambitions lie in another direction. "To be honest," says Krishnan. "I want to be on stage. I fell in love with the stage."
