"What happens when we're in the wrong position' and ordered to pay all costs of a hearing, Brian Nicholson of Oshawa asked at Wednesday's meeting of Durham council. "Can you imagine the cost' We could be looking at a tremendous cost to the taxpayer for a quick fix.' Arad. he added. "What happens w those individuals who may not have the financial resources (tor pay for a hearing) but may have a valid case'?" Pickering's Kip Van hempen had asked councillors to consider studying OMB policy in an attempt to recover "staggenng" costs. The ONIB has its own set of guidelines in rewarding costs. but, according to regional solicitor Brian Roy, it sees costs borne by municipalities as "the cost of doing business.' Costs aren't usually awarded to them unless the case is seen as "vexatious". he add.. Schools ainl to help out hungry kids FROM PAGE. I But that doesn't mean educa- tion dollars w'1111 be spent feeding school children, chair Louise Farr reminded trustees, some of whom were concerned about supporting a Toronto initiative. Scugog trustee Joyce Felly called the move "one more aspect of social work" and said "staff is busy enough lookinc after admin- istrative business." Oshawa's Audrey MacLean disagreed. "There's a war going on out there and it involves kids who are there from no fault of their own," she argued. "It's not exclusively a Toronto problem," said Kathleen Hopper, also from Oshawa. "Children in Durham schools are going to school hungry. You can't teach hungry children." In a letter to the Durham board, the city of Toronto said teachers are noticing improve- ments in attention span and auen- dance, and enhanced social skills because students usually eat together at those schools with food programs. It's been intro- duced at 15 schools and involves about 3,900 students. Toronto's city council will ask the minister of education to hold a meeting with all potential gov- ernment supporters to discuss school food programs. It has asked supporters from across the province to inform the minister of their willingness to meet with other levels of govern- ment to discuss the financing of such programs, to provide infor- mation on existing school food programs in their area, and to suggest ideas on how those pro- grams could be funded. Pickering's Sir John A. Mac- donald Public School on Balaton Ave. introduced a breakfast pro- gram to its students last Septem- ber. It was organized by the Pick- ering Optimist Club and other agencies. Mr. Van Kempen likens the OMB to a "supreme court for a (regiona] or municipal) council." It's an independent administrative tri- bunal which hears applications and appeals on municipal and planning matters, including zoning bylaws and subdivision plans. It also hear assessment appeals, • ts 'dangerous': councillor land compensation matters, and appeals under the Rental Housing Protection Act. Oshawa's Jim Potticary support- ed the study. "I don't want to stand in the way of people going to the OMB (and) we're not going to ask for costs each time." Last year, Oshawa city council prepared for a hearing which was thrown out because the com- plainants didn't show up, he said. They say they're not "allowed" to celebrate white heritage and are punished for wearing white and/or red shoelaces in their black boots. At the same meeting where they cleared up the last loose ends of the 1992 budget, trustees started to work on ideas for the next one. Diligence of this magnitude is almost unheard of in government circles. The expla- nation of the finance chairman, that trustees already know how much they will get in grants from the Province next year, may be reasonable, but we doubt it would have moved previous boards to action. Hamstrung earlier by timidity, secretiveness and by their own reluc- tance to embrace all -year schooling, trustees now seem ready to look at any way to reduce the spiralling cost of education. There was talk of charging a parking fee at high schools, which wouldn't be popular with students or teachers, but would raise more cash for the strapped school board. The suggestion was made to reduce the number of hours students spend in certain specialized classes in Grades 7 and 8. And the possibility of switching over from a five-day week to four days was raised, which we're certain would be a big hit with students, but probably not with par- ents. (Most parents seem to be completely opposed to any change that involves changing their plans for day care.) The first ideas were just thrown out for discussion, as a starting point. They will spark debate at the public sessions the Board says it will hold to encourage taxpayer involvement in the process. We can expert more in the months to come, some of which may prove more acceptable. This board is doing what every school board, even, level of govern- ment for that matter, should do: it is working full-time on its biggest prob- lem, it is attacking it now, instead of at the last minute, and it is drawing on the expertise available in the community for ideas and feedback. For this the trustees deserve only congratulations and encouragement. If their efforts are matched and aided by the public, we can be confident that solutions will eventually be found to the pressing financial problems of our education system. Letters support in the t Public therapy funds shouldbebettershared To the editor, Although it is wonderful to see the good friends of the Parrington family gather to support them as they struggle with the cost of therapy for their daughter, the rar- ity of this kind of personalized fundraising might lead members of the public to believe that their needs are unique or unusual. In fact, many families face the same dilemma, but few have the enthusiastic support system the Parringtons enjoy. Most families must settle for mediator model therapy through a treatment cen- tre, where the parents (usually The News Advertiser wel- comes letters to the editor on topical issues, controversial matters and anything else of interest to our readers. But many mothers don't want to be the tough therapy taskmas- ter, and many feel inadequate or unwilling to perform exacting therapy routines. The question is why can rou- tine, publicly -funded therapy be a reality only for those children who live in chronic care institutions or ;group homes? In this province we spend mil- lions of dollars annually on chil- dren with disabilities, and it is astonishing how few of those dol- lars reach the vast majority of those in need: those who live at home with their family! //a46,X,e o4?4440C C!2470 Those of us who have a child with a disability are busy people, but we must assume responsibility for demanding that our public resources support family unity rather than institutions. Funding must be attached to the child (or adult) in need rather than the over- head of treatment centres which only offer waiting lists or mediator model service. His plays are always popular productions for the- atre groups and as a result they're staged on a pretty regular basis. His writing is brilliant yet simple. Many directors try to look beyond this brilliant sim- plicity and totally misinterpret the script. This is not the case with Peter Hurley, direc- tor of Heronga►e Barn Theatre's current pro- duction of The Prisoner of Second Avenue. He has done a masterful job of interpretation and the result is a fast -paced, superbly -cast comedy. A great show from a first-time director. The story line is very straightforward. By KEITH GILLIGAN Staff Reporter AJAX - Lynda Baker's career was all shook up about a year ago. Baker used to be a sales director. Today, she's the king of rock 'n' roll. It all started when a friend brought over a singing machine to Baker's Ajax home- "I had a low voice, so I thought I could do Elvis." She made a tape of her efforts. "I played it for people and they didn't believe me. I played it for friends and they said I should do something with Baker took the tape to the producer of La Cage, a Toronto show that features imperson- amm "He asked who it was (doing the singing on the tape). I said and he hired me on the spot." That was last June. Since then, Baker's quit her job with an import company to take up a singing career that's seen her export her talents to Mexico and could take her to Australia and Japan. Most days, though, Baker performs just down the 401 at Toronto's Evening at La Cage, 'where she does a 10 -minute medley of Elvis tunes and Roy ,?5=5 swq With the Ajax -Pickering News Advertiser Orbison's Pretty Woman Tuesday through Saturday. Elvis and Orbison are , among nine performers she impersonates. Ms. Baker also imitates Karen Carpenter, Elton John, Anne Murray, Janis Joplin, Louis Armstrong and Brian Adams. But, she doesn't do all the voices on stage. When it comes to imper- sonations, audiences seem to prefer females imitating ✓ males and vice -versa, she --- says. When she imitates females, "There isn't the draw, there isn't the difference, there's not the shock factor. Audiences loved Anne Murray, but she's alive and female." Is it better if the person being imitated is dead'? "Yes and no. The ones we do are the greats. It has to be a leg- end because it goes over very well," she says. "It's nice to be ...in real line able to bring them back. Our (show) MC says 'It's nice to reach into the heavens and bring someone back'." And, what else does Baker think about her new career'? "I'm still laughing. This over- whelms me; it really does. I'm not letting this go to my head, because 1 can't believe this myself." THE NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY, MAY ",1""AGE I I P OSS P_ pickering village june 13th , without opener PICKERING - The Pickering Strikers senior men's soccer team was a squad without a place to play Sunday afternoon. The team was scheduled to play its home opening contest against Oshawa City in Motor City Soccer League Division One regular season action. However, bad field conditions at Dunmoore Park forced officials to seek another venue for the game. To add insult to injury, the teams travelled to Kinsmen Park only to find that the soccer pitch there was in an equally bad state. At that point, the game was called off. Strikers' coach Frank Bancroft says the condition of the fields "was quite an embarrassment to say the least. The Dun- moore Park field had a trench going through the middle of it. The Kins- men field wasn't even lined, and even if it was lined, the referee wouldn't have allowed us to play because the field was so bad." Bancroft says the league will permit the Strikers to make up the game at a later date, as the contest's cancellation wasn't the fault of the team. The Pickering Strikers kicked off the season by earning a 2-2 tie with Oshawa Celtic at the Oshawa Civic Fields May 19. The Strikers roared back to score two second -half goals to salvage the draw. THE NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY, MAY ",1""AGE I I P OSS P_ pickering village june 13th , without opener PICKERING - The Pickering Strikers senior men's soccer team was a squad without a place to play Sunday afternoon. Steve Abbott and Todd Sindrey scored for Pickering. Mercy! Ball bantams split games MCIG; MG - The Picker- ing ReMax Red Sox bantam rep baseball team was merciless m its most recent EOBA league game. Last Thursday, the Pickering squad encountered an off day on the field against Whitby MKL and suffered a 4'11 14-1 mercy w; • defeat where a game is ended when one team leads by more than 10 runs after seven innings. However, ori the next night in Cobourg, the Pickering ban- tams handed their Cobourg opponents a similar fate, pounding them 14-2. Wes Houston led the way offensively, going four -for -five at the plate. Steve Smith went .:three -for -five and scored three runs. Kareem Sethi registered three hits. Pat Middleton FING got the win on the hill, with 5«q,,Q„ Blair Gaulton coming on in relief to get the save. First baseman Bill Mur- ray played a sound game on defence. The ReMax bantams play their home opener at Brock - ridge Park Sunday, May 31. Game time is 12 o'clock. rA MA& DMFJ 110 From Our Family to Yours Best in duality. Service.
