A spokesperson at Consumers Distribut- ing in the mall, who asked that her name not be published, said it's likely shoppers will find the store open between noon and 5 p.m. Consumers Distributing was the first Ontario chain to announce its stores would open Sunday. Stores owned by Dylex — including Fairweather, Biway and Thrifty's— will be closed, according to a spokesperson at Fair- weather. There was speculation that outlets of Zellers and The Bay would also be open. but retail giants Eaton's and Sears are firm. Cops seek clues in 'sick' attack on cat, raccoon PICKERING - A "despicable" case of cru- elty to animals that may involve some kind of ritual has Durham Regional Police appealing to the public for information. Police say a skinned cat was found beside the parking lot of Steeple Hill Church, Hwy. 2 and Rosebank Rd. in Pickering, on Wednes- day. The animal had an incision in its abdomen and its lower jaw was broken. The next day, a skinned raccoon was dis- covered on the beach near Conmara Ave. Its tail had been removed and partially cooked, while it too had an incision in its stomach and its lower jaw broken. Police say the raccoon was lying near a "makeshift altar" made of sand and sticks with a cross erected at one end. Both carcasses were discovered by animal control officers. "We've had cruelty to animals from time to time, but nothing like this," says Inspector Ed Wilson of 25 division. "There's one sick individual or group out there..1 don't know if it's a ritual or not." Police have no leads or suspects and they're asking anyone with information to step forward. ALA • r • 0 10 • 0 7 PICKERING - A proposal to introduce a modified school year at Highbush Public School has been overwhelm- ingly rejected. In a vote on May 4, 5 and 7, parents of children at the school and staff members voted 86 per cent against the plan. Of a possible 520 votes, 447 ballots were cast. Highbush is on Strouds Lane in Pickering. Under the modified school year, schools would be open year-round, students would be divided into several groups and there'd always be one group on vacaiion. Debbie Barnes, a member of a group that opposed the plan, says, "I'm pleased about (the vote result). Highbush is one of the best schools in Durham because parents and teachers care about the stu- dents. I think that's why year- round schooling was rejected." Four other schools — two in Whitby and two in Oshawa were also targeted for a year-round program. The plan was opposed at all those schools as well. Durham Board of Educa- tion officials said they'd only introduce a year-round pro- gram at a school if 75 per cent of parents and staff voted in favor of it. Because the plan was rejected at the five schools, no school in Durham will run on a modified calendar. The computer buff naturally wants to investigate the latest innovations in the industry, while other users like to keep abreast of technological developments that might help them streamline their work. Most businesses have incorporated some form of computer system into their operation. And many of those that have not, are seriously considering the implementation of this essential tool. Accounting, inventory control, databases and word processing arc some of the most common areas that have been computerized. Once a system is in place and the staff is familiar with its use, the advantages become obvious in terms of fast access to information and reduced costs in many areas. The recession has introduced an element of unpredictability in the normal sales trends found in the computer field. Typically, sales crest in mid- December and fall off early in the new year. However, in Redbaron (1991) Computer Services' case, sales peaked in February of this year. Manch was a little slower, and the latter part of April showed marked improvement. "Thc normal peaks and slumps in the business seem to be out of sync, and it is becoming a little hard to forecast future trends," says Mr. Cavanaugh. May, June, and July's sales could be quieter, if previous years can be used as an indication. Mr. Cavanaugh says that August usually brings in students who are shopping for computers as they get ready to return to school. There is a heavy demand from people looking for machines in the $500 range. A number of these units are available from stores such as Redbaron (1991) and are usually trade-ins from customers who are upgrading - Many of the new programs, particularly those run in the Windows environment, use similar commands and are much easier to learn than certain older software versions. They do, however, require more capacity in the machine, which accounts for the reason that users are purchasing 386 and 486 computers with hard drives of 120 megabytes and more. It is also possible to have your present computer upgraded to support the newer software. Mr. Cavanaugh also offers some thoughtful advice for workers in industries that may be downsizing Llr� in the future. The Quality Education Network, Durham Region, has formed to address "defi- ciencies" in publicly -funded schools, says organizer Patti Charbonneau. She's critical of tax increases when "we're not seeing the results we want to see," though she stresses criticism is not directed at teachers because they fol- low administrative guide- lines. "We hear so much about teaching methods," she notes. "There are trendy expressions like co-opera- tive, hands-on and whole language learning. The emphasis should not be on methods but results." The group's goals include encouraging parents to become actively involved in their children's education, increasing accountability of all educational partners, and ensuring school boards place a greater emphasis on the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics. A mother of two, Mrs. Charbonneau became an advocate of parent involve- ment in education when her son was experiencing read- ing problems. She pined York's Quali- ty Education Network, which has a membership of about 1,000 since starting in January. That group asked her to act as a contact in Durham, and she's since received calls on numerous issues, including the role of trustees and how to get an assessment done on a child. "We, don't want to make an attack (on school boards). We want to help," says Mrs. Charbonneau. The group will hold a public information meeting Monday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Heydenshore Pavilion, Water Street, Whitby. Canada's department store r r PAGE 6 -THE NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY MAY 1111L IM 0o1n1cn::: Teaching tolerance If you take it for granted, said Gary Polonsky, you lose it The Durham College president was speaking about the racial riots in Los Angeles, and how comfortable we are in Canada by comparison, but he said those words on Monday afternoon, just hours before the rampage on Toronto's Yonge St Are we taking what we have for granted? It sounds like a strange thing to say of Canadians, who live in a land where anxiously examining the nation's soul is the media's favorite pas- time, but it may be true. In his speech, Mr. Polonsky pointed out we have a lot to lose. Com- pared to most of the rest of the world, maybe all of the world, we are wealthy, free and healthy. Mr. Polonsky added "tolerant" to the list, and for the most part that too is true. But if we are to pick a place to start our efforts to avoid losing what we have through complacency, tolerance is as good a place as any. In a multiracial society like ours, tolerance is indispensable. Different cultures, different beliefs sometimes grate upon each other, in these times we must try to understand, instead of getting angry and resorting to abuse. When faced with racism in others, we must try to pry the adherent from his beliefs, and teach tolerance. When faced with racism in positions of authority, we must speak out against it. At the same time, we must demand respect for the common thread here in Canada. We live in a free democracy, with a multitude of ways to get a point across. There is a place for protest and for dissenting views, but there is no place for violence. In particular, there is no place for the mindless destruction and looting, disguised as protest, that gripped Toronto this week. It need hardly be said that the greatest enemy of tolerance is fear. Fear- ful people are concerned more with making themselves secure than being decent to their neighbors. Violence, in addition to violating what nearly all believe in, spurs fear and drives out tolerance. Fortunately, again compared to the rest of the world, Canada is a peaceful place, such outbreaks are rare. We cannot afford to ignore them (Mr. Polonsky's complacency again), but we can afford to put them behind us and cam on open-minded and fair. In fact, we must Letters Skills competition a real challenge There I was trowel in hand ready to lay as many bricks as I could in three minutes. It looked easy. A little mortar here, a little mortar there. Line up the brick and slap it in place. By the time I was finished there was definitely a little mortar here and a little mortar there. In fact, there was mortar everywhere. I did, however, manage to get six bricks in place in the allotted time. If you think I've started a new career in masonry, you're wrong. This brick laying exercise was part of the 1992 Ontario Skills Compe- tition media challenge. Along with brick laying, the event involved a doorbell wiring competition in which we had to correctly place three sets of wires which in turn would then power two doorbells. We had five minutes to figure out the right configuration. I got lucky and had the bells ringing in three minutes. For those who don't know, the Ontario Skills Competition gives high school and college students studying for careers in the trades and technology fields an opportuni- tn to test their skills against indus- Eaitors � notebook try standards and their peers. This year's version took place Friday and Saturday at the Metro East Trade Centre. More than 400 students who qualified by winning a technical contest at their school and then won the same contest within their school board or college campus competed. Gold medal winners from the Ontario competi- tion go on to represent Canada in the united States Skill Olympics in June. Categories include drafting, automotive service, carpentry, sheet metal, computer technology, baking, photography, pneumatics, cosmetology and plumbing, to name a few. In addition to the trade and tech- nology areas, the students are also encouraged to develop and test their leadership skills through speech, job skill and job interview contests. The benefits for the students are two -fold -- they get to test their skills against 'real life' criteria, as well as get to meet and display their skills to possible future employers. This year's Ontario Skills Chal- lenge also included Techspo, an exhibit of projects from Grade 4, 5, and 6 students. Some of these were truly amazing. Bob Connors of Skills Canada explained this fea- ture was added to get the students "comfortable with technology." With Canada facing new eco- nomic challenges each year, a skilled workforce is a must. These students are well on their wav to meeting the challenge. As for the media challenge, I now have a new brick paper weight that says "1992 Ontario Skills Competition Media Challenge Winner". But, I must admit, so does every other media participant. I am writing this letter in response to the letter from Gord Everson that appeared in your Ma} 6 edition. The letter fails to set out important facts and is oth- erwise misleading. First, it is important for your readers to know that Gord Everson and his wife are members of a small group of people who own vacant lots in the Pickering Beach area. This group has been lobby- ing town council to install sewers in Pickering Beach so that these lots can be developed. I have opposed this substantial expendi- ture of tax dollars and therefore I am very unpopular with this lobby group. They certainly do not wish to see me as a voting member of council. Second, Mr. Everson has totally fabricated his statements with respect to the water plant. I have never oppo,e:d the construction of a new water plant facility in Ajax. I have supported a full environ- mental assessment process to select the best site for the plant. When a minority is asked to give up its rights for the benefit of the majority it is important that the minority have the protection of full due process. The decision as to whether such environmental assessment will take place is now solely in the hands of the minister of the environment who will make a decision shortly. To suggest that I am personally stalling this pro- ject is not only false but ridicu- lous. The desire of the majority should be accurately and impartial- ly determined before any decision is made on the sewer issue. State- ments that the majority want and need sewers, that there is a health concern, that public taxpayer funds are not being used etc. are all deliberate misstatements designed to further a private agenda. Finally, it is the role of a candi- date for councillor to define issues. It is clear that at some point in the near future the Verona Mall site will be sold by the receiver to a developer. It has been suggested by the mayor that such a sale may entail a rezoning of the properly to become substantially residential instead of commercial. This important piece of property should remain commercial for the assess- ment and jobs that it will provide. As a councillor I would be com- mitted to seeing that this property is developed in the best interests of the town as a whole. While counterfeiting is about as old as the printing of money itself, Durham Regional Police say the new year brought with it a glut of bogus bills. "Students no longer get deten- tions as punishment for skipping off or being disruptive in the class- room;" reports vice-principal Bar- bara Farrow. "Instead, they must make up for missed time by doing • work around the school... Although the school has had a community service program for about five years, this is the first year detentions aren't an option for the students. For a first unauthorized absence, a student must do a miai- mum of one hour of community service and he'll be warned that his parent~ will be called the next time he's away without permis- sion. For the second offence, the school will inform the parents and the student must perform a full day of community service or be • suspended for three days. A third offence carries an automatic sus- pension. ' Tbese are only guidelines that were decided on by staff," notes Ms. Farrow. "There are always exceptions to the rules." The student has 48 hours to complete the work and it's up to him to find something to do. He can ask any teacher, secretary or custodian for work, which could be just about anything the staffer needed done — organizing bul- letin boards, yard work and office filing included. All work must be supervised by an adult. Refusal to do community service means automatic suspension. No student has refused to date. "Under this system, everyone is treated with dignity and respect," says Ms. Farrow. The formation of a canine unit, which should be operational in a year, was announced at a Thurs- day press conference. The Oshawa Central Lions Club came to the rescue with a donation of S212.500. after funding for a canine unit was dropped in this year's police budget delibera- tions. There have been numerous times over the past year when a police dog could have helped two -legged cops, said Bruce McArthur. a member of the police services board, including one murder investigation. "Had the dog been on call, he could probably have come down to the area." he said. "The dog could have tracked the suspects and saved the force hundreds of hours of additional investigation." Another more common use of a police dog, he said, is in "sniff- ing drugs". The dog can "go in and find (drugs) secreted away." he said. Manish Bhatt and Jason Bragg of Ajax High showed why they are ranked as one of the top 10 doubles teams in the province by winning the silver medal in the B flight senior boys' doubles category at the Ontario Fede'mon of School Athlet- ic Associations (OFSAA) Bad- minton Championships. The Ajax High tandem was defeated by fourh-ranked Tom Liu and Chi Kien tido of Toronto's Riverdale Collegiate 15-11, 15-7 in the OFSAA B flight final. Bhatt and Bragg were the cham- pions at the Lake Ontario Secondary School Association Badminton Championships last month and fin- ished second overall at the Durham - York Secondary School Athletic Association (DYSSAA) champi- onships in Markham last week. Ajax High's Trisha Carter had a goal of achieving A flight status after winning B flight gold medal., in the past two years. At OFSAA this year, she stayed in the top eight in the province and played some of the toughest singles players in Ontario en route to a seventh -place finish- In inishIn the first ward, Caner defeated Karen Bobbie of Sault Ste. Marie '11-8, 11-12, 1 ] -2, followed with a blowout against Ellen Wardle of Sarnia i l-1, 11-0. The Trojans captured their second victory in as many starts by handing the Denis O'Connor Chargers an 11-4 loss at Ajax's Miles Park last Tuesday. Pickering High was led by another solid pitching perfor- mance by Brian Slater, who picked up his second win. Slater allowed two runs on five hits, while fanning six DO'C batters in a row. Slater, David Jones and rookie Vance Crozier led the Trojans' offensive attack and the tough defence. Crozier sparked the offence by hitting a bases - loaded double to put Pickering High into the lead. The Trojans opened the sea- son by defeating St. Mary 15-5. Again, Slater was the winning pitcher.
