why children behave the way they
do is the focus of a study group
for parents of youngsters five to

The eight -session study group,
offered by the family education
resource centre of Durham House,
will also examine practical ways
for redirecting misbehavior and
encouraging children to feel good
about themselves.
Classes will be held Wednes-
day mornings from 9:30 to 11:30
beginning May 6 at the Pickering
Recreation Centre, Valley Farm
Road and Hwy. 2.

Spelling Bee of Canada competi-
tion.
Deadline for entry is morrow,
• Saturday. But it's advisable to regis-

ticipants can review a booklet con-
taining practice words. Registration
is $2.50.
A practice sessiion will be held at

Help Stanton family
end their nightmare
It's every parent's nightmare. A child doesn't come home at the
expected time. "Maybe she's met a new friend," a mother hopes. Minutes
turn into hours. "Where can she be?" The wondering stops and the wor-
rying begins. "What's happened to my child?"
The Stanton family of Pickering has lived that nightmare for more
than two years. Julie Stanton was 14 when she was last seen Easter Mon-
day, April 16, 1990, near her home on Maury Cres. Since that day, life's
been "just hell," says Julie's mother Pat. "There are no words to describe
it." She says "there's no hope" Julie will be found alive and admits
expecting the worst "the night my daughter didn't come home. I knew
something was terribly wrong."
It's believed Julie was abducted and subsequently killed. An acquain-
tance of the Stanton family has been charged with first-degree murder
although her body's never been located. Now, the Stantons want to find
Julie so they can give her a "decent burial."
Pat and John Stanton held a press conference this past Easter Monday
when they issued a plea for volunteers to join them as they resume
searches in late spring. "We would appreciate any help from the public
to find our Julie," says Mrs. Stanton.
Volunteers are asked to meet Saturday, May 23 at 9 a.m. at the Port
Perry police station, Simcoe Street north of the Seventh
Concession/Regional Road No. 8. Searchers should wear rubber boots or
work boots with a sturdy sole, jeans, a long-sleeved shirt and a wind-
breaker. Anyone with hip -waders is asked to take them along. Searches
will continue each Saturday and Sunday after that, weather permitting.
The Stantons arc confident they'll find Julie "if we look long and hard
enough. She's out there. We have to find her. She needs to be put to
rest."
We urge you to join the searches, if you can. Put yourself in the Stan -
tons' position. Help them put Julie to rest. Help them sleep without the
nightmare of not knowing what happened to their baby.

and mailing some 57,000 ques-
tionnaires, the people's forum
managed to collect the views of
only 1,000 constituents.
In February, myself along with
several other members of the
committee travelled to Ottawa to
present, on behalf of Ontario Rid-
ing, the views of the constituents
to the Joint Parliamentary Com-
mittee on the Constitution.
Throughout this entire process,
1 could not help but feel that as a
people, as Canadians, we were
short-changing ourselves. Less
than one per cent of us had
responded to the government's
call for input to a prunes which
will most assuredly and pro-
foundly effect no-, only the exis-
tence of our country, but the way
in which we live our daily lives.
Democracy is a fragile institu-
tion. If in fact we value our
democratic rights, why then
would we choose not to exercise
our democratic responsibilities" it
is not enough to simply think
about the major issues in our
political lives, we must activel%
participate.

participated in the process, i
thank you for the courage of your
convictions. To the 169,0(X) who
did not participate, 1 hope that

Young people can clean up with Can-
dian Tire essay contest
AJAX-PICKERING - Youths can win a
1,000 scholarship by telling Canadian Tire
about a clean-up project in the community.
Canadian Tire stores across Canada, includ-
ing outlets in Ajax and Pickering, are joining
with Simple Green Canada, the maker of an
all-purpose cleaner, in the Cross -Country
Clean -Up essay contest.
Youths from nine to 20 years can submit an
essay, in 150 words or less, with their reasons
for having a specific clean-up project complet-
ed in their community.
There will be three age categories: nine to
12 years, 13 to 16, and 17 to 20. Entries will be
judged by a panel of professors from an
Ontario university, with final judging by a
Canadian Tire and Simple Green management
Entries must be postmarked no later than
June 10. Winners will be announced July 10.
The grand prize winner will receive a
S1,000 scholarship and have his or her clean-up
project completed this summer by Simple

DURHAM- Police have
scooped up dope with a street
value of more than $700,000 in
Durham region's biggest drug
bust in nearly a decade.
Forty people, including two
from Pickering and one from
Ajax, were arrested as several
area police forces swooped
through Durham during a four-
hour series of drug raids early
Thursday morning.
Warrants have been issued
for an additional 18 people.
In addition to 100 drug
charges, more than 60 other
criminal charges were laid,
including armed robbery, pos-
session of stolen property, and
conspiracy to commit arson.
Stolen property valued at
$50,000 was also seized, includ-
ing a new car and firearms.
The 10 -month undercover
operation "nabbed some heavy-
duty traffickers," Durham
Regional Police inspector John
Shephard said at a Thursday
afternoon press conference.
"They were dealing in pounds.
It's one of the biggest undercov-
er operations we've ever had."
A joint effort of local OPP
detachments and Durham police,
Project Overhaul involved 10 to
20 officers at limes.

The Golden Gate Quartet -
Swing Down Chariot (Columbia):
The Golden Gate Quartet is still
going strong after over 60 years; but
this collection - one in a series of
remastered gospel works, which
includes several other compilations,
including Mahalia Jackson - dates
back to the `40s, when the Quartet
were one of the hottest gospel/swing
groups around. Drawing from beau-
tiful spirituals and adding a synco-
pated jazz beat, the group help cre-
ate a new sound which, though cer-
tainly of the time, is still pleasing
today.
Ellis Marsalis - Heart of Gold
(Columbia): One of the lesser
known, but by no means least tal-
ented of the renowned Marsalis
family, Ellis is the father of stars
Branford and Wynton. Pop Marsalis
recruits rising -star ivory -tickler
Marcus Roberts for a set of luscious
jazz standards plus a couple of new
ballads that show off his diversity,
as well as the talent that helped
mold his family jazz dynasty.

to the good old days of Dixieland,
featuring the venerable Humphrey
Brothers band (including Percy

Less than one year ago, Bill Daniell set
out to revolutionize community
developments. H e set out to build the
complete community with 1,000 homes,
a shopping centre, a recreation complex,
schools, a medical centre, and where
everything people would look for in
every aspect of their daily lives will be
close at hand.
"Of course, we are building a
community with some well-designed
homes," says Bill Daniell, president of
the Kaitlin Group. "But a community is
about building and planning for the
future. That is why we are the developer
as well as the builder."
Aspen Springs is located on 500 acres
on Regional Road 57, behind Hwy. 2 and
Hwy. 401. The first phase has the
development of approximately 25 acres
and building of 210 homes. Eventually,
1.,000 homes will cover 130 acres.
"This is not a two- or three-year plan.
This is something that is going to be
developing for the next 15 years," says
Daniell. '-[bat was our objective from the
start. We wanted to develop a complete
community."
There is a home for everyone in Aspen
Springs. In total, 25 home designs have
been incorporated into the community.
The homes of Aspen Springs will range
from freehold townhomes starting at
5111,990 and ranging up to 2,446 -sq. ft.

As the weather changed, the housing
market remained strong in the Durham
Region, with 679 homes trading
ownership during the month of March.
Statistics from the Oshawa and District
Real Estate Board show that the average
price increased slightly from last month
to $147,732, but is still 5.3% lower than
the average price for March 1991
($155,987).
"More than 50% of the homes sold
went for under $150,000," commented
Mark Smith, FRI, CMR, President of the
ODREB. "REALTORS are still seeing a
lot of action in the moderate -priced
homes: there are many incentives now for
first-time homebuyers, and I think they
are taking advantage. We believe that
many of the March purchasers took
advantage of the recent change in Federal
Legislature on 59c Downpayments.
In the coming months, I believe we will
see the higher -priced homes selling as
those who have sold their first home
move up. I also anticipate individuals
using their RRSP's to purchase a home.
There are currently 3,092 homes listed
for sale in the Durham Region," says
Smith. "there hasn't been such a selection
since last June."
Homes sold in an average of 48 days
during the month of March, and went for
95.49c of their listed price.

kicked off the 1992 season with
an impressive second -place fin-
ish at the prestigious Mansfield
Mehock Relav in Mansfied.

and draws athletes

Marshall. school. Pickering High

Sammy Davis captured his
second consecutive gold medal
in the triple jump and estab-

Brother Brian Davis collected
the silver medal in the same
event.
In the shuttle hurdle relay,
Pickering posted the fastest time
to capture the gold medal. Team
members were Bryan Kirton,
Dion Trowers, ?Maurice Kondell
and Rodcliff Chung.
Pickering's 4 -x -100 -metre
relay team played sixth in a
field of 70 teams. Team mem-
bers were Brian Davis, Kevin
Gayle, Maurice Kondell and
Kirk Salesman.
Ajax hosts Regional Games for
the Physically Disabled Saturday
AJAX - Top disabled athletes from across the province will con-
verge on Ajax Saturday.
The swimming competition of the Ontario Regional Games for the
Physically Disabled takes place tomorrow at the Ajax Community
Centre.
Approximately 125 swimmers will take part in the meet which is a
stepping stone to the Ontario Games in Sudbury in July.
Ajax deputy director of recreation and meet coordinator Brian
Skinner says the regional games offer a good opportunity for the
town to promote itself and show off the newly -renovated community
centre to people from elsewhere in the province.
The Ajax Aquatic Club will assist the town with the managing and
officiating of the meet.
The event will get under way with the opening ceremonies at 9:30
a.m. and the first race at 10 a.m.
The meet will wrap up at about 3 p.m.
Spectators are welcome to attend. Admission's free. �.

'Unnual Bay Ridges Hockey Tour-

Formerly the Kevin Shore
Memorial Tournament, the event
will once again bring together for-
mer players from the old Bay
;Ridges Hockey Association for a

chapter of the Children's Wish
'Foundation, which grants wishes
to terminally -ill youngsters.
The tourney kicks off tonight

at the same time, two PHA atom
teams will play a game. Tourna-
