Michael May, who was seri- ously injured in a 1990 house fire that killed his 34 -year-old friend Kevin McGrath, predicts more residents will die if politicians don't take action. 004 1110SUMN "It was like peering into hell," he says of the fire. "Which politi- cian wants to take the credit for holding the purse strings so tight Kevin died?...If (fire department) response had been within four min- utes, it's quite likely Kevin would be alive today." He decided to make his con- cems public after reading an article in the News Advertiser in which mayor Wayne Arthurs said he "wouldn't want to feel" council was putting lives at risk. Councillor Kip Van Kempen had disagreed, saying he was worried about response times. Council members will gather at the Ajax town hall to hammer out the 1992- 93 budget. If necessary, budget delibera- tions could continue Sunday "and beyond if we have to," says mayor Jim Witty. He says this budget is "the toughest one without a doubt" that he's worked on in his 11 years on town council. Town staff were instructed to bring in a budget with a 4.5 -per cent tax increase. Mr. Witty says cuts will "absolutely" be needed to reduce the tax increase to below 4.5 per cent. "It's a very fine line when we stop cutting. We could come in with a zero - per cent increase, eliminate staff and cut services. Council will have to determine `what cuts in service are to be made. "People have come to expect a certain level of service. If we cut back, people won't be happy." Among the big ticket budget items council will have to consider are a com- mtwity centre for north Ajax and sewers for the Picketing Beach area. The first phase of a community centre could cost about $6 million, while sewers for Pick- cring Beach could nut between $8 mil- lion and $10 millim over an I I -year peti- od. 'Politicians refuse to u'pgrade s ervice because it won't buy them votes': May FROM PAGE 1 able fire response times in north Pickering and recommending another fire hall be built. For the past two years, council has refused to hire more firefighters and has put the new fire hall on hold, say- ing taxpayers can't afford it. "There's less than acceptable coverage, yet politicians refuse to upgrade service there because it won't buy them any votes," charges Mr. May. "The equipment is very old and not adequate for today's needs." He maintains he got a busy sig- nal when he tried to call the fire department for help in the early morning hours of Dec. 3, 1990. He had to call Metro's 911 emergency number from a cellular phone (the 911 number has since been installed in Durham). That delayed his plea for help by four minutes, he estimates. It took more than six minutes for the fire department to reach his Brougham house after he dialed 911, he adds. But Maurice Brenner, acting mayor due to the illness of Wayne Arthurs, says it's "very unlikely the line would be busy". Fire chief Steve Stewart felt the department had responded in "a reasonable amount of time," Mr. Brenner adds. Chief Stewart has been asked to write a report to council (see accompanying story) and refused comment on quality of service until politicians have seen the report. "Before I make any com- ment, I'd better respond in the report," he says. "I've simply said (to council) this is what we have. The will to change things is a political decision.- Mr. ecision"Mr. May, his wife Tina and Mr. McGrath had been awakened by smoke detectors at about 3 a.m. that morning Mr. May was able to escape from his second -floor bed- room, but hot gases that burst into flame prevented his wife and Mr. McGrath from following him downstairs, he says. His wife jumped from a win- dow, suffering broken bones. Mr. May, after calling for help, put a ladder up to the window for Mr. McGrath. "I looked at my hands and saw flesh hanging off them," he recalls. "1 was badly shocked by bums." There were later reports that Mr. McGrath was afraid of heights and therefore didn't jump or use the ladder, but Mr. May doesn't believe that. "He had trained in the military to repel off cliffs: it doesn't wash," he says. "But he was pay panicky-" Firefighter Rick Ingram earned a bravery citation by crawling through the window and lifting an unconscious Mr. McGrath down the ladder to an ambulance. He died en route to hospital. Mr. May spent four days in intensive care with a scorched air- way and lungs. 117wl CORRECTION NOTICE In our RIL SCALE SALE Continues Flyer inserted in the Oshaw&W itby This Week & Ajax News Advertiser, PPopeV11A =ROW Track at 49.88. Councillor Maurice Brenner, acting mayor due to the illness of Wayne Arthurs, says he requested the chief write the report following inquiries by the News Advertiser. Outside that, I don't expect any hirings. The replacement of any staff leaving will have to come to the budget advisory committee for approval," he says. "If it's absolutely necessary, we'll look at a reduction in staff, but I don't see that happening," Mr. Witty adds. However, a reduction in staff through attrition is possible. Council members will also have to decide what to do about a salary increase for themselves. In January, they voted to delay a four -per cent pay hike to see what impact a raise would have on the budget. "'Ilse (four -per cent) salary increase represents $800 out of a $20 -million budget. A Pickering man who survived a fatal 1990 blaze that killed hisfriend says the death could have been avoided if town council had acted upon a 1987 consultant's report which said fire response times in north Pickering were unacceptable. Michael May believes Kevin McGrath may have been saved if the politicians had authorized the building of another fire hall as the consultant recommended. But, council has refused to hire more firefighters in the past two years and has put the new fire hall on hold, saying taxpayers can't afford it. "There's less than acceptable coverage, yet politicians refuse to upgrade service there because it won't buy them any votes," charges Mr. May. A serious allegation, but one that can't be entirely dismissed. Coun- cil this year approved a S3.5 -million arena for the south end of town. People who use recreation facilities can vote; people who die in fires can't. Mr. May wonders, "Which politician wants to take the credit for hold- ing the purse strings so tight Kevin died?...If (fire department) response had been within four minutes, it's quite likely Kevin would be alive today.., What's council's response? Fire chief Steve Stewart and his firefight- ers have been asked to prepare reports on the quality of equipment and service throughout Pickering and on response times in the north pan of town. If chief Stewart and his staff identify any problems, we hope the politicians don't ignore that report too. Yes, building a new fire hall will be costly. But, Kevin McGrath has paid the highest price of all. Letters Reader insulted, appalled —ANvAs1HeNHLNAYFRs SIRIKE DRAGS ON 1#0010 t,L,yiCl4! Is this what they're using the extra dollars for" Artwork and design? While so many are suf- fering from this suffocating recession; while so many are barely able to provide food and clothes for their children, let alone try to pay their utility bills, Ajax Hydro is looking to deco- rate their new offices. And in a rather elite and pretentious fash- ion, I might add. I wouldn't exactly consider Ajax Hydro offices as requiring an elitist type image. It's unlikely that they have wealthy, high-level clients trafficking in and out of a4pe your ' their offices all the time. Why the fancy artwork needed? Everyone else has had to cut back on unnecessary expenditures. Why is Ajax Hydro exempt from this recessionary fact? This type of spending of the consumers' money is irresponsi- ble and insensitive and it makes me wonder about what other unnecessary spending is going on within the Ajax Hydro offices. As a consumer I feel insulted and burned, and I seriously hope they reconsider this appalling and untimely idea. Saunas used to be just a dark, square box stationed in a far-off corner of the hour:,. But homeowners are now using these new saunas as the primary component in a room's design - V even in main -floor bathrooms and especially in rooms adjacent to the master bedroom. "New sauna designs are bringing the sauna out of the basement," says Keith Raisanen, president o Finnleo 0 .v Saunas in Cokato, Minn. In the case of Finnleo, the new elegance is thanks to European craftsmen who are incorporating the best in European furniture design into the traditional Finnish sauna. Finnleo adds to the elegance by using Nordic White Spruce for its saunas and white African Abachi for its seats. These light-colored woods match the newest Scandinavian furnishings and provide a cleaner, more spacious feeling than traditional saunas made of the darker cedars and redwood. Regardless of the size of the sauna you need, chances are there's a standard sauna package that will work for you. They come ready -to - assemble, in a variety of sizes and configurations from a small club - size unit. If your interest is in a one -of -a - kind model, manufacturers are also offering custom sauna packages that give the home owner total flexibility for almost any size, shape, and design in a sauna. These complete custom sauna packages have all the wood cut and components built to the exact specifications of the buyer. A custom sauna doesn't mean sacrificing design or accessory options. For example, Finnleo's custom cut saunas are available with all of the new generation designs in windows and doors. She confirms my belief that good directors should have served an extensive apprentice- ship on the stage in an acting capacity. The set is suitably drab and very well designed, and looks every bit like I imagine a basement apartment in New York City would look. So often directors fail to place enough emphasis on the impor- tance of music. Not Risk. She has compiled a chilling soundtrack for both pre -show, intermission, and theme music. This show is a technical nightmare and the per- formance had its problems. How- ever, it was a dress rehearsal and I am sure the hitches will iron themselves out. The play itself is in my esti- mation one of the finest chiller thrillers ever written. It tells the story of a young blind woman as she seeks to outwit three vicious hoodlums who believe that there is a doll filled with heroin some- where in the apartment. Ann E. Ward plays the role of Suzy Hen- drix, the blind girl, originally played by Audrey Hepburn on the silver screen. I have seen Ward do many roles. This is defi- nitely her finest performance ever. If I did not know better, I would swear she really was blind. She will come out of this show very bruised from bumping into furniture re -arranged by her adversaries. This was without doubt an award-winning perfor- mance. The four supporting men also turned in excellent performances. Jason Stowe as gangster Mike Talman (last seen in "Deathtrap") is getting better with every show. He made a wonderful transforma- tion from heartless hood to a human being with a heart. Ran- dall Rowden, making his debut at Herongate, is the epitome of a cheap gangster. Geoffrey Coulter, as the homicidal maniacal killer, turned in a super performance. He became the type of character that gives you nightmares for weeks after. David Lepp, as Sam Hendrix the husband, although only a small role, was really con- vincing as the loving, caring spouse. Last, but certainly not least, Hayley Wood, a high school student who plays Gloria the young girl who lives upstairs and who is making her Herongate debut, gave a marvelous perfor- mance. Her biography states she wishes to pursue a theatrical career. I feel she has a very bright future ahead of her. The play is the thing however, and this production will have audiences on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Certain- ly not for the weak of heart. "Wait Until Dark" runs until May 9, but tickets are going very fast so book early. Herongate is located on Altona Rd., about five km north of Hwv. 2. Box office number is 472-3085. This is a 12 per cent increase from the revised January level of 144,000 units (SAAR). The majority of the increase was due to higher starts of social housing in Ontario. Except in Alberta and British Columbia, the market has not yet responded to lower interest rates. All of the increase is attributable to multiple units, which rose 32 per cent in urban areas from 57,000 units SAAR to 75,000 units SAAR. Single detached units in urban areas remained the same at 62,000 units SAAR. "Private market starts should gain strength over the coming months," said Gilles Prouix, Chief Economist in CMHC's Market Analysis Centre. These measures along with low interest rates and stable house prices mean that many renters can now afford to buy a home." Housing starts in Quebec were down 47 per cent to 18,000 units SAAR. Both single detached and multiple unit housing starts were down significantly. Starts in Quebec have dropped for the last two months due to the ending of the provincial government program supporting homeownership. The decline in Quebec was balanced by a 63 percent increase in Ontario to 62,000 units SAAR. Growth in social housing construction in Ontario more than offset a drop in private construction of both single detached and multiple units. n Canada Trust Realty ,.,-aria 7-,,t Realty C Re T,, UNDUE! Brides-to-be will find their affordable dream gown at Encore Bridal Three years ago, when Bobbie Knight was looking for 'the perfect dress' for a fancy function she was given a satin gown by a friend. This incident ultimately led to the start-up of her business, Encore Bridal Fashions. "I wondered just how many more wedding dresses were stashed under beds in boxes so I ran an ad in the paper. Within two weeks, I had a room full of gowns and by the third week. I'd made my fust sale!" says the owner of the Ajax store. Her showroom is filled with the fantasies of a bride or prom queer[ -to - be: cathedral trains, silk brocade, peau de soie. taffeta and crystal organza in designs from Alfred Angelo, Bill Levkoff and New Image, to name a few. The pleasant surprise comes with the price tags. Much of her collection are "previously enjoyed" outfits on consignment while a large portion comes from boutique liquidations. The savings are amazing - a new Marie Jean Pierre gown in raw silk, which was originally 56,000 is tagged at 5750. Bobbie pulls another beauty off the rack; a gorgeous hand -beaded southern belle number that retails for 51800 - but because the store went out of business, she can sell it for 5550. Bobbie's criteria for previously enjoyed dresses ensures quality and value are passed on to the customer. "Before I'll accept a gown on consignment. I make stare there is no damage or permanent soiling and I Bobbie Knight, owner of `Encore Bridal Fashions, (with one of her many ".exquisite gowns. ^:; rr; is %t {+..::: y<tipS'' < ter••.+.:. ..... won't take anything over three years old. The majority of gowns today are polyester and what people don't realize is that the lining will yellow in less than three years. I have a ckana that I trust inunensely and I can pass on the dry cleaning savings to the girls." Primarily to accommodate wedding parties and to provide larger, hard -to - find sizes, Bobbie got into carrying new limes. She has a wide selection of party or prom dresses, bridesmaids' dresses. flower girls, and mother -of -the bride dresses, as well as accessories such as hats, veils headpieces and hosiery. Most of these dresses range from $75 to $100 (they would retail for $200 to $30D). There are also rental gowns and accessories such as that once-in-a- lifeume crinoline. -Who needs to buy that?- And for that elusive dress spotted in a magazine. Bobbie can usually track it down. By appointment only, a visit to Encore will renew the personal side in choosing such an important outfit and co-ordinating most of the wedding details - all in one place. With each gown "having a story behind it," this procedure also ensures the gowns stay in perfect form and free from too much handling.- -Like my children, I'm overprotective of my gowns," admits Bobbie. From a disc jockey and videographer to the invitations, cake baskets and a cosmetician. Bobbie has valued referrals for recommendation. Possessing an artistic flair, she offers lovely silk flower bouquets and arrangements she does herself. "I can provide the client with everything but a limo, caterer and photographer because I've yet to find ones I'd recommend. The last thing the bride needs on her wedding day is a hank after a year of planning." Working one-on-one with her clients, Bobbie is able to help them find their dream dress. -1 don't want any girl kaving here unless she's 100% happy. I can tell by their eyes and I'd rather have them go home and sleep on it If they don't dream of the dress, it wasn't meant to be!" As she chuckles about how far behind she is in her computer work, Bobbie casually mentions how the brides are her top priority. And judging from the photos of beautiful brides on her walls, this commitment has certainly proved that dreams do conte true.
