Catholic teachers vote on new pact
DURHAM -The separate school board and its 290 high school teach-
ers reached a tentative contract agreement Thursday.
Teachers will vote on the deal Monday, supervised by the Education
Relations Commission.
Blair Morris, president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers'
Association — Durham Secondary Unit, says no details of the agreement
will be released until the members have voted.
The teachers will continue their work -to -rule until both sides have rat-
ified the agreement.
&` Board chairman Tom Oldman says, "I'm happy with the fact we can
bring forward a tentative agreement. It's been a very long haul."
The teachers started their work -to -rule campaign Jan. 13. As a result.
all extra -curricular activities have been cancelled.
The teachers' contract expired Aug. 31.
During the last set of contract talks in 1990, the high school teachers
walked out and embarked on an 18 -day strike. Their salaries were decided
in binding arbitration.

GM, CAW
strike tentative
agreement
By NORMAN NELSON
Durham Staff
DURHAM - General Motors
workers will vote Wednesday on an
overtime agreement that was finally
hammered out
Friday between
union and manage-
ment after an
intense week of
negotiations.
Canadian Auto
ffi7
Workers (CAW) president Bob
White said the local agreement now
puts the ball back in the court of
GM leader Robert Stempel in
Detroit.
"We have addressed the (daily
overtime) problem that GM says
was a major problem for them,"
said Mr. White.
"Now it's up to Stempel to get
off his ass and make a decision
about a product allocation on the
Oshawa complex." (Plant 2 has yet
to receive a vehicle to work on
beyond 1994).
Local management had long
been requesting an improved over-
time arrangement that would allow
it to meet daily production quotas.
And meeting daily production
quotas, it added, is crucial if the
massive Oshawa operations are to
avoid the next round of GM plant
closings.
"I think it's a good deal — it's a
lot better then the last one," said
union negotiator Pat Blackwood,
referring to the overtime agr+eernertt
that was turned down by CAW
members nearly two weeks ago in a
close vote.
Equally important, he added, is
that the union bargaining commit-
tee. while not all equally enthusias-
tic, was at least united.
After prolonged internal discus-
sions on Friday, Mr. White conced-
ed there were "obviously people on
the committee who did not share
the view that this should be done".
But at the end of the day, he
said, "all were committed not to
work against the proposal ... it cer-
tainly meets with the vast majority
of the leadership."
The tentative agreement differs
from the one voted down, in that
workers could be made to work an
extra hour only twice a week.
And if they worked those two
hours, they couldn't be made to
work a full day Saturday.
In Mr. White's view, all that has
been done is two hours have been
shifted from Saturday (which the
company is legally allowed to
schedule) on to the two days in the
week.

there's never been a mechanism to
coordinate efforts" between munici-
palities.
The GTA group could also "team
UP on resources," such as the train-
ing of employment equity officers,
who could be shared between sever-
al municipalities, suggests Mr.
Brenner, an assembly staring com-
mittee member.
The group expects to meet again
in June.
DURHAM - Racism knows no
boundaries and must be fought on
all sides if it's to be defeated, say
regional officials.
In an effort to win that war,
Durham has joined forces with
municipalities from across the
Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
The GTA Assembly of Race
Relations Committees, an ad hoc
body, met Monday to report respec-
tive accomplishments and recom-
mend future plans. Participants
included Brampton, East York,
Etobicoke, Markham, North York,
Pickering, Scarborough and
Toronto.
Pickering regional councillor
Maurice Brenner, a conference
speaker, compares the assembly to
the United Nations.
"The GTA assembly doesn't
want to replace municipal commit-
tees, but aims to enhance their coor-
dination and fill in the gaps," he
explains.
Just as the UN "banded together
to identify a country that was abus-
ing the rights of another," during
the Gulf War, the assembly can
exert peer pressure on municipali-
ties which don't take racism seri-
ously, adds Mr. Brenner.
Provincial citizenship minister
Elaine Ziemba urged community
representatives to watch out for a
backlash against minorities created
by the recession.
Mr. Brenner admits, "It's harder
and harder to fight racism during a
recession" because immigrants are
used as scapegoats. During times
of difficulty, you begin to blame
people you believe are different."
Member municipalities can sug-
gest trends others should watch for
and share information on how
they've dealt with incidents involv-
ing racism.
Pickering mayor Wayne Arthurs,
who also spoke at the conference,
says it's important for communities
to share "successes and frustra-
tions" because it heightens the issue
of racism.
He believes "the awareness and
presence" of multicultural commit-
tees help fight racism "even if you
don't have the funds to do the out-
reach that you want to."

THE NEWS ADVENMER SUNDAY, MARCH 29,1992-IPAGE S
The following is the first in
a series of articles on Ajax's
past. Living History is brought
to you by the Ajax Local
Architectural Conservation
Advisory Committee.
AJAX - Built in 1815 by
George Washington Post, the Old
Post Inn is on Hwy. 2, opposite
Picov Nurseries.
When this route was the only
road between York (Toronto) and
Kingston, and heavily travelled
by stage coaches, this handsome
building was a well-known stag-
ing station or inn.
The eastern portion of the
main floor contained a tap room
and a dining room. The parlor
occupied the northwest corner
and the room behind served as
the proprietor's sitting room. A
cooking wing or summer kitchen
stretches from the back of the
building. Upstairs, there are sev-
eral private sleeping quarters, but
most significant is the ballroom
which occupies three-fifths of
the front and has survived intact
for 177 years.
When the stage coaches arrived
with their passengers, the ball-
room would be filled with beds.
The folding partition may have
been closed,
dividing the
large rectangu-
lar room in half
to provide pri-
vacy. When the
ballroom was
not being used
as a sleeping AJAX LACq
quarters, the
partition would
be opened, the room filled with
flat -back chairs, and local resi-
dents would file in to attend town
meetings.
The facilities included stables
and a blacksmith shop to service
the stage coach horses.
In 1832, the inn was quaran-
tined because of an outbreak of
cholera.
In addition to the inn, George
and his wife had a working farm
on the site and raised five sons and
two daughters.
The Post
family was
prominent

brother,
Jordon, built
the Post Manor, at Brock Rd. and
Hwy. 2 in Pickering. His son
George Washington Jr. built the
blue house on Post Hill, on the
north side of Hwy. 2, east of the
new Canadian Tire Store.
With the advent of the Grand
Trunk Railway in 1856, staging
declined and the inn lost its promi-
nence.
The clay for the inn's four -
course construction was likely dug
out of the banks of Carruthers
Creek, then shaped, dried and
fired on the site. The beams are
squared tree trunks cut locally.
Floor boards, doors and trim were
constructed from lumber milled at
the many saw mills which were
once located on Duffin Creek.
One can only imagine what an
impressive building the Post Inn
would have been upon comple-
tion, given that many residents
still lived in log dwellings and the
majority of this area was still cov-
ered in dense forest.
The Old Post Irm is Ajax's old-
est standing building and under
the stucco and aluminum siding,
the majority of its former grandeur
still exists.
Pickering
giving up
good faith
bargaining?
PICKERING - Firefighters here
believe the town has taken a step
backward when it comes to collec-
tive bargaining.
The firefighters Monday night
failed to dissuade town council from
endorsing a complaint by the city of
St. Catharines over a salary increase
awarded to the latter's blazebusters.
To the chagrin of St. Catharines
politicians, an arbitrator recently
awarded a 9.8 -per cent salary hike to
that city's firefighters. St. Catharines
is appealing to other Ontario munici-
palities to join in a protest to premier
Bob Rae. The Garden City wants the
premier to establish ways govern-
ments can overturn such awards and
wants arbitrator Kevin Burkett
removed from a list of provincial
arbitrators.
Pickering firefighters object to
councii's endorsement of the com-
plaint. Bob Williams, speaking on
behalf of the professional firefighters
association, told politician the reso-
lution asks "that you take the chair
out from under the feet of the pnrxi-
ple of bargaining in good faith."
Pickering itself used arbitrator
Kevin Burkett on two occasions, he
said, and firefighters have never
objected to the decision of an arbi-
trator selected by the town.
But, with the exception of coun-
cilior Maurice Brenner, council
voted to side with St. Catharines.

A terribly
public life
How much of the financial life should councillors expose to make the
public feel safe that they aren't abusing their position? That's the tricky ques-
tion at the root of proposed changes to conflict of interest legislation.
Queen's Park wants to tighten up the loopholes and councillors across the
province are aghast at the invasion of privacy involved. If the proposals are
passed, councillors, trustees and commissioners would have to bare their
assets – give names of companies or addresses. (They would not have to
reveal how much their assets are worth.) The same would be true of debts
and income, and the rule would apply to the assets of spouses, young chil-
dren and any companies the councillors own any interest in.
And mistakes will be fatal -- The Province plans to take away the defence
of error -- councillors who don't think they have a conflict of interest, but do,
will end up suffering the same consequences as those who wilfully abuse
their power. The proposals would go a long way to preventing a conflict of
interest from escaping scrutiny – but they also go a long way to preventing a
private life for public figures. No detail of domestic finance would escape
such disclosure -- including details that would expose more private matters,
such as the nitty-gritty of separation and divorce arrangements and who's liv-
ing with whom, which are no concern to the public.
Many municipal politicians are concerned that complete disclosure would
discourage good candidates from running for public office. We could add
that it would also encourage those who are determined to abuse their posi-
tion to be more devious in hiding their tracks.
As it stands now, councillors must declare conflicts as they arise. They
face prosecution if they fail to do so, and someone can prove it. Under those
rules council business is already becoming difficult, as councillors declare
extremely picky conflicts to make sure they are squeaky clean and immune
from prosecution. There is no reason to believe that situation would improve
tinder the new Hiles.
The changes offer little improvement in municipal government, and make
public life a little too publ•

Pickering Council meeting, this
being the meeting at which the
council struck the annual budget.
There were a great number of dele-
gates in attendance, nearly all of
which were addressing the council
in reference to a 'no increase bud-
get'.
From the statements made, the
majority of the speakers were of the
Pickering branch of the Taxpayers
Coalition of Ontario and had
addressed the councillors at the pre-
vious week's Committee of the
Whole of Council. Obviously the
intent was to bring great pressure to
bar on the council to return a no
per cent increase budget'. I was
intrigued, and my first reaction was
that it was wonderful that all these
residents were so interested in
keeping tax increases down to a
minimum. After council, on a
recorder vote, had succumbed to
the 'people pressure', and I had
time to analyze the budget content,
I discovered the effect this decision
was going to have on the town and
its services. I was appalled to dis-
cover that over half of the Town of
Pickering has inadequate fire ser-
vice coverage and that council was
going to spend, in this time of hard-
ship for many, $3.5 million for an
ice arena.
The lack of adequate fire cover-
age is clearly outlined in a report by
Dillon Consultants completed in
1987. The Town of Pickering
expanded rapidly over the past 10-
15 yews, both residential and com-
mercial. New schools are predomi-
nate in the new urban area but there
is no fire station, despite the fact
that money was placed in a reserve
account by the pre -1987 council.
Predominate in the council to have
this done were the present mayor,
Wayne Arthurs, and now regional
councillor for Ward 1, Maurice
Brenner. Neither have said anything
since.

Re: Pickering Beach Servicing
The issue.
feel that I must write this let-
ter in response to the misrep-
tton reflected in previ-
ous letters with regard to the imple-
mentation of municipal services in
the Pickering Beach community.
Fact 1: To have the Region of
Durham install sanitary services in
the Pickering Beach community has
no effect on anyone's tax bill. The
region's share is derived from rev-
enue received from water and sewer
user fees collected across the region
and is built into the program to
expand or repair/replace trunk
and/or connector lines within the
. region. This is the standard process
and has been in place since the
inception of regional government in
1974. The remaining amounts are
paid by the property owners directly
affected by the installation of this
sanitary service. This year, this cost
is just under $5,000 per 50 foot
property. Half of this cost is payable
in the year of connection to the sys-
tem and the other half can be paid at
the time of construction or deferred
over a 10 -year payment plan. The
region has been prepared to com-
mence construction for the past
seven years, maintaining the funds
in each of their annual budgets.
Fact 2: Lifting the building
freeze bylaw in the area does not
guarantee all vacant lot owners a
septic permit, nor will it assist some
residents in obtaining a permit to
upgrade, change, or replace their
systems. Lifting the bylaws at this
stage would be contravening the
very reasons the building freeze was
originally instituted in 1972.
Fact 3: Many of the septic sys-
tems in the Pickering Beach area are
over 20 years old and nearing the
end of their estimated lifespan. To
repair or replace a system can cost
anywhere from 55,000 to $20,000
depending on the situation that
exists on the individual properties
•and in consideration of the more
stringent ministry guidelines.
Fact 4: It has never been suggest-
ed that the rest of the Town of Ajax
should do without so that Pickering
Beach could be brought up to an
acceptable standard of conveniences
that many others take for granted.
Our position has always been to
slowly integrate the Pickering
Beach community into a moderniza-
tion process and doing so without
raising any tax base.
Fact 5: Whether defunct or work -

ing Properly, septic systems pose a
possible or potential threat to the
health and welfare of their surround-
ing environment. Pickering Beach
does not have the ideal conditions
compatible for septic system devel-
opment considering the high water
table, heavy clay base, lots that are
now too small as per the new guide-
lines, and the current drainage prob-
lems within close proximity to Lake
Ontario and Carruthers Creek.
Under these conditions, the capabil-
ities of septic systems are that much
more questionable and concerning.
Fact 6: Septic systems were not
designed for subdivision use as an
alternative to municipal servicing,
and is being reflected as such in the
current Ministry of the Environment
guidelines.
s well as addressing the
sanitary servicing issue,
the Town of Ajax must
also consider the road reconstruc-
tion and storm sewer installations,
since all independent consulting
reports commissioned by the town
indicates that Pickering Beach roads
are all within the "immediate
timetable" for consideration noting
structural deficiencies and base fail-
ures. Some of these streets have
been on this list for seven years, cer-
tainly longer than many other streets
falling within this category.
Fact 1: In Ajax, there is a Roads
Improvement Program, which is
funded annually through the general
tax base of the town. Monies, in the
amount of approximately $1 million
are placed into this fund each year.
This does not increase the tax base.
This amount, in the past, has been
subsidized by the Ministry of
Transportation at Queen's Park.
This money is available to all
municipalities across Ontario, being
collected from various road taxes
and licence plate renewals. The
province matches dollar for dollar
what the municipalities pay out and
the Town of Ajax has customarily
applied for this subsidy each year.
Fact 2: Many residents in the
Town of Ajax have benefitted from
this program, and many streets with-
in the town have been modernized
or improved within this program. It
would seem reasonable that
Pickering Beach should be treated
in a similar manner, since we too
have paid our share for the better-
ment of all Ajax roads, and it would
be nice to see some of our commit-
ment come home.
Fact 3: The Town of Ajax is cur-
rently, and has been for a good num-
ber of years, installing storm sewers
and improving road conditions in
many areas of Ajax. In the
"Wartime" section for instance, a
program of completing one street
per year has been ongoing since
1976, with three streets yet to com-
plete. When this area is completed,
the town, in all likelihood, will shift
its attention more directly to streets
in north Ajax, Pickering Village
and/or Pickering Beach.
Fact 4: Since 1984, through the
Ajax Road Improvement Program.
Ward 1 has received over $1.6 mil-
lion, Ward 2 over $1.2 million,
CREMATION:
fivhat's involved?
In recent times we have witnessed a growing interest
regarding cremation. More and more people are asking as
questions about "what is involved." Today many people feel
that cremation is a desirable alternative, but,are uncertain of
costs and procedure. In response to this PINE RIDGE
MEMORIAL GARDENS is pleased to make information
available to you without obligation.
Please call 427-5416 or mail attached coupon to:

Ward 3 over $2.6 million, Ward 4
over $1.1 million, and Ward 5 just
over $620,000. Pickering Beach,
being in Ward 5, has not received
anything from the road allocations
from the Ward 5 expenditures during
this time.
Fact 5: It has never been our
position to raise the tax base in order
to modernize the Pickering Beach
community. Rather, it has always
been suggested that the community
be modernized within the parame-
ters of the Ajax Roads Improvement
Program and have only asked for
some consideration within the bud-
getary guidelines of this program, as
it is done in all other sections of the
Town of Ajax.
t would appear that urbaniz-
ing the Pickering Beach area
is wrought with skepticism
and that a compromise would seem
most welcome. There are many
avenues by which this issue may be
resolved, and I have full confidence
that council and works staff will find
a solution that is fair to the property
owners in Pickering Beach, fair to
the Town of Ajax, and also fair to
the Ajax taxpayer.
The letters that have been written
are maligned with prejudice, nar-
row-mindedness, and a blatant disre-
gard to factual information. Their
only intent is to incite hatred
amongst an otherwise fair and car-
ing community and council by
manipulating multi-million dollar
figures which are used out of con-
text, suggesting that everyone will
be paying much higher tax bills for
long periods of time, which is not
the case. If the bottom line was
known of what was paid out to com-
plete the Wartime Sector, or what it
would cost to urbanize Pickering
Village, I would suggest there would
not be that much of a cost difference
between these areas and that of
Pickering Beach.
To want to alleviate the concerns
of septic systems and their contami-
nants, and to share the community
with those who have been denied the
privilege of raising their children
and/or retiring here, is my objective,
and once and for all to put an end to
the lingering indecision of whether
this community receives any consid-
eration of municipal servicing or
road improvements, something that
has been kicked around and dis-
cussed for over 20 years.

The announcement came
bluntly in December: General
Motors in Oshawa could be con-
sidered extra baggage in a huge
company restructuring proposal
that would result in some 74,000
job cuts across North America.
In the meantime, the Oshawa
plant has endured three months
of controversy.
There was a bitterly fought
anion election, a controversial
vote on overtime that was defeat-
ed, and the arrival of national
Canadian Auto Workers leader
Bob White to head bargaining at
General Motors' headquarters in
Oshawa.
Through it all, newcomer
John Caines has emerged as the
quiet leader of the local plant's
union membership. Soft-spoken,
articulate and committed to a
new era of management -labor
relations, Mr. Caines riews kin -

Caines: "The most important
issue is the question of their jobs.
With the shrinking share of GM's
products in North America, it puts
a threat upon the individuals. If
General Motors sees their profit
margins are dropping...
"We all have to adjust to new
concepts and greater technology;
all that coupled together results in
(questions) of job security. We've
got to think about ways to give
them the job security they need.
(For) some of the old methods of
job security such as sub -funds,
etc., the money would be better
spent on retraining and so forth."
News Ad: What is your immedi-
ate obpctive for the membership?

a job -bidding committee set up

News Ad: What do you think of
the call for Bob White to step in to
lead the negotiations on behalf of
the local membership?
Caines: "He's a high-profile labor
leader; you can't take away the
fact that he's the president. It has
an impact. He has more experi-
ence than I do at the bargaining
table. In fact, a lot that I know, he
taught me. I think that there are
some difficulties there. I think he
realizes the obstacles and road-
blocks I was faced with. He real-
izes the impact of the potential job
loss is a serious one. It's not an
idle threat or a whipsawing type
of situation, I don't see it that
way. You've got a company that's
downsizing; to keep your mem-
bership intact you've got to be
competitive."
News Ad: Describe the difference
between your type of leadership
and that of former plant chairman
Tom Hoar.
Caines: "I think Tommy was
handcuffed by his own politics.
He was trying ... If Tom wanted to
be his own man, they wouldn't let
him. On a one-to-one basis, Tom
could be a voice of reason too, but
his politics got in the way of that."

jobs and offer solutions."
News Ad: Does the Oshawa plant
produce cars that are as cost -com-
petitive and efficiently assembled
as those made in the U.S.?
Caines: "In some respects, yes,
and in some of the plants we're
competing against, no. For exam-
ple, our plant was at a 39 -man-
hour requirement to build a vehi-
cle, and some of the American
plants were at 32. That's a seven -
hour savings. But some of that's
not necessarily to do with effi-
ciency, it has to do with design.
I'm sure that GM will be adopting
component designs that are more
efficient. If we can reach the com-
petitive level of some of the
American plants in the number of
hours it takes to produce a car,
plus the ability to reach schedule
attainment, I think we're at the top
of the class. We have one of the
most modern facilities in North
America."
News Ad: In your opinion, where
does the future of General Motors
lie in comparison with the other
auto giants?
Caines: "I think the competition
is going to get stiffer. We're going
to have a more difficult time deal-
ing with a question not just of
North American free trade, we're
going to be dealing with free(r)
free trade. There are an awful lot
of elements that are coming into
the picture. It's a challenge that
we're going to have to be up to.
I'm trying to assemble a team that
will be up to that."

Housing Corporation, will discuss the role
of the association.
The Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation was establish in 1946 to help
Canadian war veterans and their families
find a home.
The CMHC introduced a combination
of government construction, direct loans,
grants, other financial assistance and
policies designed to nurture the building
industry and make mortgage financing
more accessible to Canadians.
The Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation is owned wholly by the feder-
al government. Through the association,
the government is committed to helping to
house Canadians across the country.
The mandate of the association, as out-
lined in the National Housing Act, is "to

the repair and modernization of existing

Ed Perryman knows how important the
purchase of a new home is and what rights
the home buyer has.
Mr. Perryman will explain the role of
the Ontario New Home Warranty Program
at the home buyer's seminar.
The manager of the Whitby regional
office has been with the program for over
:six years and has experience in all aspects
of residential construction. He and his staff
members can answer most questions
.whether dealing with condominium pro-
gocts or single family dwellings.
Since 1976, the Ontario New Home
Wwrandes Plan Act has been protecting
new home buyers from such things as
deposit warranty protection to budding

delays in closing of the dwelling and
defects in wa dmumship and mawriak

and living conditions-" The National
Housing Act was introduced in 1944.
The CMHC addresses a number of
issues dealing with basic housing needs.
Social housing and assisting low-income
households obtain affordable housing and
adequate shelter in a private market,
market housing and helping maintain a
healthy and stable mortgage financing
environment and housing support and
research to improve housing quality and
the development of innovative approaches
to current and future housing needs all fall
under the spectrum of the CMHC.
The association shares its research with
Canadians in various ways. One of the
most popular is through training and edu-
cational programs, seminars, lectures, con-
ferences and various publications and vid-
eos all of which are targeted at specific
audiences from building scientists to
Canadians looking for their first home.
Another useful venue is the Housing
Market Information System, which moni-
tors the construction and absorption into
the market of new dwellings. This system
provides information through radio, tele-
vision and newspapers on the state of
housing markets in urban centres across
Canada.
The Canadian Housing Information
Centre also makes CMHC research and
other materials available to the housing
industry, interest groups and the general
public. The centre has computer access to
worldwide housing information and data
networks, bibliographies, printer and
audio/visual catalogues.

The Oshawa and District Real Estate
Board is celebrating 37 years of service
this year.
The Oshawa and District Real Estate
Board produces daily multiple listing
service (MLS) information for its
members. The public lists a home or
property with one broker and , through
MLS, all realtors can sell the property or
home. MLS guarantees exposure of a
property to all Oshawa and District Real
Estate Board members.
But there is more to the Oshawa and
District Real Estate Board than selling
homes. The association and its members
believe in giving back to the community In
a recent review of the 12 -month period
from September 1990 to September 1991,
254 Oshawa and District Real Estate Board
realtors spent 2,175 hours raising
approximately $36,000 for various
organizations throughout the Durham
Region.
The Oshawa and District Real Estate
Board is a trade association which
represents about 1,200 realtors throughout
the Durham Region.
Realtor is a registered certification mark
which identifies real estate licensees who
are members of the Canadian Real Estate
Association and, as such, adhere to a strict
code of ethics and standards of business
practice.
Speaking at the seminar Thursday night
is Marlene Kerr, Associate Broker with
Homelife Select and a member of the
Board of Directors of 0.13-R.E.B. She will
take you step-by-step through what you see
at a model home or trailer site. She will
also help with questions you will be asked
and the basic process of buying a new
home.

The Durham Region Mortgage Lenders
Association was forted in December 1987
by a group of bankers, trust company
lenders and local mortgage brokers in
conjunction with Mortgage Insurance
Company of Canada and the Canadian
Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
The purpose of the association was and
continues to provide an atmosphere of
fellowship to develop, train and educate
mortgage lenders and to exchange
mortgage and real estate information
pertinent to Durham Region and the
surrounding area
AM,
Y.t
1%0 top
The goal of the association is to assist
homebuyers to make educated choices for
'home purchase and mortgage financing.
The association holds regular monthly
bi-monthly meetings, which feature a guest
:speaker in a luncheon format or workshop
to train members.
Speaking at the seminar is Liam Cragg,
Mortgage Manager with National Trust in
Whitby. He will be speaking on the use of
RRSPs as a down payment, pre -approvals
for mortgages and how to communicate
with your lender.
Liam Cragg joined National Trust in
1979 and has worked in many areas such
as St. Catharines, Hamilton, Mississauge,
Richmond Hill, Brampton and Simcoe. He
was posted at the Whitby Mortgage Centre
in January of 1989.
Mr. Cragg is also involved as an exam
anon at a housing site, at a building supply
store, on a letterhead or brochure from
some business in the home building or
renovation industry.
But how many people realize what the
Oshawa Durham Homebuilders'
Association logo stands for?
The logo is a symbol of the home
building industry in the region, the Ontario
Home Builders' Association and, at the
national level, the Canadian Home
Builders' Association.
The association is constantly dealing
with concerns like the cost and types of
housing, costs involved with servicing A4
land, building more efficient housing,
improving building materials,
apprenticeship programs and any
legislation that could be detrimental to the K
industry and the consumer.
The association is actually the voice of
the residential construction industry and it
.represents more than 4,000 member
companies in Ontario alone. The Oshawa
:Durham Homebuilders' Association is just
one of 34 local associations across the
province.
The membership of the association is
comprised of companies from all facets of
the residential building industry including
buildere. land devektpers, renovators. trade
contractors, manufacturers, suppliers,
realtors, mortgage lenders, apartment
owners and managers, plumbers,
architects. engineers, lawyers, utility
companies and anyone working towards
building the best possible product for the
constuner.
All association members are required to
abide by a strict code of ethics and are
expected to be honest and fair in their YOUR dealings with one another and the

Surgical strike force cuts through red tape in Article 99
ARTICLE 99 (PG): Keifer
Sutherland and Ray Liotta head a
surgical strike force of doctors and
nurses fighting bureaucratic red tape
m a veteran's hospital.
BASIC INSTINCT (R):
Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone
star in this psychological thriller.
Douglas, a San Francisco detective,
investigates a murder and becomes
entangled in a deadly affair involv-
ing three intriguing women, each
with an unexpected motive for the
crime. Pretty hot stuff.
MY COUSIN FINNY (AA):
Joe Pesci has some fun playing a
New York lawyer out of his element
in Alabama trying to defend his
cousin and a friend of murder
charges. Also starring Fred
Gwynn.
BLAME IT ON THE BELL-
BOY (AA): When an eager -to -
please bellboy (Bronson Pinchot)
delivers itinerary envelopes for
three guests whose names all sound
alike, trouble is in full swing at the
Hotel Gabrielli. And the worlds of
Messrs. Orton (Dudley Moore),
Horton (Richard Griffiths) and
Lawton (Bryan Brown) may never
be the same.
ONCE UPON A CRIME (PG):
John Candy leads an ensemble cast
in this flick billed as a "dog -gone
funny movie." Also starring Jim
Belushi, Cybill Shepherd, Richard
Lewis and Sean Young.
THE LAWNMOWER MAN
(AA): Jeff Fahey and Pierce
Brosnan star in another story from
Stephen King's fertile imagination.
STOP! OR MY MOM WILL
ExIOOT (PG): Estelle Getty plays
a mother who moves out to
California and instantly makes her
son's life a nightmare. It just so hap-
pens her son (Sylvester Stallone) is
a cop. Looks as if Sly is sticking
with the comedy thing until he gets
it right.
GLADIATOR (AA): The world
of underground amateur boxing is
explored in this movie starring
Brian Dennehy, Ossie Davis, Cuba
Gooding Jr. (Boyz N The Hood) and
James Marshall (Twin Peaks).
Novelist Catherine Tranwil (Sharon Stone) Is a murder suspect who
draws police detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) into a maze of
mind games, love, excess and death In Basic Instinct.
Marshall plays a young man who
forsakes a promising academic
career and his girlfriend to clear his
father's name and his debts.

Connery is a research scientist
searching for the cure for cancer
deep in the South American jungle.
He finds himself in a critical race
against time and the destruction of
the rain forests to reproduce the elu-
sive serum.
THE PRINCE OF TIDES
(AA): Barbra Streisand directs and
stars in this romantic movie adapted
from Pat Conroy's best-selling
novel. Nick Nolte offers the best
performance of his career as a man
trying hard to deal with a mid-life
crisis while having to recall the pain
and anger of his childhood. Also
great performances by Blythe
Danner and Kete Nelligan.
SHINING THROUGH (PG):
Melanie Griffith plays spy deep in
Nazi Germany in this romantic
adventure also starring Michael
Douglas. There is something about
,he fact the Allies would send
someone behind enemy lines who
learned all she knows about spying
from watching movies that doesn't
seem quite right.
AN AMERICAN TAIL. FIEV-
EL GOES WEST (F): Steven
Spielberg brings his lovable animat-
ed mice to the screen yet again. In
I986. we saw how the
Mausekewitzes escaped Russia to
settle in the new land. The film
became a children's classic and now
it's westward, ho!

in the Martin Scorsese directed
flick. The film also features appear-

Peck and Martin Balsam, all of
whom starred in the 1962 original.

Off The Record
The wait fSass well worth
Sass Jordan - Racine (Capitol):
The wait was worth it! The
Montreal rocker checks in four
years after her scintillating debut
with another funky, hard -rocking
record which, in this case, bares
more than a passing resemblance to
the Black Crows (which is okay by
me!). Racine is every bit as good as
her first effort, which filled
Canadian airwaves for almost two
years. Expect this one to do the
same.
Steve Forbert - The American
In Me (MCA): The former "New
Dylan" has been recording infre-
quently of late, but by the sounds of
American, it's not for lack of inspi-
ration. Forbert sounds a little jaded,
but his straight -ahead folk, rock and
blues' style is melodic, well -crafted
and pleasingly unpretentious.
Terri Nunn - Moment of Truth
(MCA): Berlin's sultry siren strikes
out on her own for the first time
since leaving the band in '87. And
for the dynamic singer it's an exor-
cism of personal demons, including
her feelings on loneliness, sex (of
course), an affair with a married
man and even her father's suicide.
Unlike her early work, Moment
isn't quite `alternative,' but it does
have an experimental edge that
takes the music beyond usual radio
fare.

Mazzy Star - She Hangs
Brightly (Capitol): Originally
released in May, '90, Capitol has
re-released this gem of low-key
American folk, country and blues
(with just a hint of Doors' -style
psychedelia). The closest compari-
son would be Toronto's Cowboy
Junkies minus the snooze factor.
Lead singer Hope Sandoval punctu-
ates the slow -spun grooves with a
spectral voice that lingers, even
after the disc is over. If you missed
it the first time around, don't make
the same mistake twice.
Jerry Jerry and the Sons of
Rhythm Orchestra - "Don't Mind
If I Do" (Aquarius): Canada's
reigning nutbar garage rock king
may be showing signs of mellow-
ing on this his latest disc, but that's
not to say Perry Como has anything
to worry about yet. With titles like
'Blew Elvis' Mind" and "No Ass
Tatoos (In Heaven)", there's still
some mischief in Jerry Jerry's mind
(and guitar), but some of his forays
into soft jazz etc. show the rocker's
softer, mature side. Still, there's
plenty of styles amongst the 13
songs, and little room for boredom.
Rush (Sdtk.) - Eric Clapton
(WEA): Slowhand is in terrific
form as he furnishes a largely
blues -based set that both soothes
and sizzles. Side 2 is the highlight,
featuring two Clapton lead numbers
and another where he abandons the
spotlight to blues great Buddy Guy.
Not bad for a mere "soundtrack."
Johnnie Johnston - Remember
Me (Independent): A collection of
songs from local performer Johnnie
Johnston, whose versatile night-
club act has entertained thousands
of easy -listening fans in the Toronto
area over the past three decades.
Johnston croons eloquently about
love, nostalgia and his old Irish
homeland with South African part-
ner Margie Ryder. To order, call
