Transformer fire at Brock dump PICKER ING - A transformer fire at the Brock West landfill site Wednesday afternoon caused officials a bit of worry. The fire, which turned out to be minor, caused concern intitially because of hydrogen gas on the premises, says fire chief Steve Stewart. But, even as fire crews arrived, the fire had all but extinguished itself, leaving nothing to be done except electrical repairs, he says. The blown transformer caused an estimated $100,000 in damages, say Durham Regional Police. He says his former home, on the 9th concession between Claremont and Stouffville, was once occupied by a tenant who rebuilt car batteries in a shop across the street. A Honda centre now stands where the battery shop was located. The Honda centre, Mr. Baker's former home and a neighboring property are all undergoing tests. Mr. Baker didn't realize the crushed batteries posed a health hazard and didn't alert the government until a friend advised him to. After preliminary envi- ronmental tests last summer, Mr. Baker received an alarming letter from the fed- eral justice department. There were "high levels of lead" in __ie "soil, dust and air", the letter revealed. Noting that Mr. Baker had a Bill Baker young daughter and that lead contamina- tion is associated with developmental disorders in chil- dren, the letter continued "Public Works Canada is great- ly concerned about the health of such a child" and rec- ommended the family be moved to another site. "Your whole life is turned upside down," says Mr. Baker. Although his daughter appears to be in good health, he adds, "You don't know what health problems you can have ... everytime you get sick you don't know what's the matter with you." The government had earlier assured him there was no lead on the property, he charges. Now, he's angry he and his lawyer aren't being kept informed about current tests. "I want to know what was there and how bad it was ... I want to know what the hell is going on. They're trying to sweep this under the table." But area residents know as much as the government does at this point, says Paul Kavanagh of Transport Canada. "We've tried to give as much information to tenants as we can. We try to keep every- one informed." Mr. Kavanagh, regional manager of Transport Canada's safety and security branch, says current tests are examining soil, ground water and air quality on the three sites and should be completed in April with results released in July. Preliminary tests showed excessive lev- els of lead and other contaminants in the soil. A consultant's study will examine any health risks to residents, identify the extent of the problem and recommend courses of action, says Mr. Kavanagh. "We don't know where the source of the contamination is. We suspect it was there at the time we acquired the property" in the '70s for the on -again off -again Pickering airport. He says the government had no prior record of batteries on the site and didn't do an environment audit on the land before expropriating it. Ironically, the well water on Mr. Baker's new rental property also has excessive levels of lead and the gov- ernment supplies him with bottled drinking water. But that's "totally unrelated as far as we can tell," says Mr. Kavanagh, who says lead pipes are the suspected culprit. Meanwhile, Mr. Baker says he hasn't ruled out the possibility of launching legal action against Ottawa. A buoy floating offshore can of the Pickering nuclear plant was believed by a resident to be a boat overturned with occupants hanging on for dear life. He called for help at about 3:30 pm. Regional council last week continued its small part in the battle when it approved continuation here of a provincially -funded program for battered wives. introduced in Durham as a pilot project last year after successful lobbying by victims of wife abuse, the $27,000-prograrn allows women who've gone through regular crisis counselling services to receive additional treatment, addressing such issues as anger, assertiveness and obstacles to trusting relation- ships. Kudos to the region and the province for offering the extended program. They're doing their part, albeit a small one, to fight one of society's biggest dis- graces. It's up to all of society to take up the gauntlet in the war on wife abuse because it's a problem society created and has condoned for far too long. It's incumbent on caring, loving parents to teach their sons not to abuse females physically, mentally or verbally. Daughters must be taught that women are equal to males, that they deserve to be treated accordingly. Its incumbent on the education system to drive those messages home. (We hope the Durham Board of Education's new mission statement adopted Monday goes further than aiming to help students "respect the ethnocultwal mix of our society"; respect of sexual mix must also be ingrained. And, we're somewhat disappointed Durham College's Ajax campus recently dropped its Women Into Trades and Technology program that trained females for jobs pre- viously dominated by men; only time will tell if the co-ed course introduced in its place will succeed at preparing women for such jobs and convincing than that they should be on an even playing field with males in the workplace.) The fight against wife abuse must be everybody's frghL The court system has to dish out harsh penalties to abusers. Women must learn they're not chat- tel, put on this earth to be whipping posts for men. Letters � Louisa Reddin fondly remembered Grandview saddened by death of colleague The staff, trustees and clients of Grandview Rehabilitation & Treatment Centre are deeply sad- dened by the sudden death of Louisa Reddin, who died as a result of a car accident on March 13. Louisa was the supervisor of the Speech/Language Pathology and Audiology Department of the centre which provides therapy ser- vices for children with communi- cation and physical disabilities. Louisa had worked at Grandview since September 1988 and was highly regarded for her many contributions to the centre, and her love and dedication to children. She was a graduate of the University of Prince Edward Island and the University of Toronto, and a resident of Ajax. With over 20 years of clinical experience, Louisa had previously worked with the Antigonish District School Board and other children's centres and hospitals across Canada. Louisa will be fondly remem- bered but sadly missed for her expertise, and her caring and T!Q"e �Ou/� c� understanding nature. She was an energetic person with a keen sense of humor and love of life. On Friday morning (March 13) 1 slipped on ice at the community centre. Within seconds I was sur- rounded by people who got blan- kets out of their cars, sat me on one (it's numbing to sit on an icy surface), wrapped one around me and put a baby blanket over my knees. The staff of the centre and physio department rushed out and were so concerned and helpful. The ambulance (and a fire truck) were there so fast and so sympa- thetic. Our hospital staff here are very special. They're warm and caring and we should consider ourselves very blessed as a community to have such nice people to care for US. Thanks to everyone who helped. On Friday morning (March 13) 1 slipped on ice at the community centre. Within seconds I was sur- rounded by people who got blan- kets out of their cars, sat me on one (it's numbing to sit on an icy surface), wrapped one around me and put a baby blanket over my knees. The staff of the centre and physio department rushed out and were so concerned and helpful. The ambulance (and a fire truck) were there so fast and so sympa- thetic. Our hospital staff here are very special. They're warm and caring and we should consider ourselves very blessed as a community to have such nice people to care for US. Thanks to everyone who helped. Some can be prevented; others can be treated by chemical or natural means. Many lawn experts say a healthy plant is less likely to succumb to illness or damage. It's also generally agreed that the conditions that make the plant healthy are likely to help curb the spread of pests and disease to other plants. Having appropriate soil, moisture and light is also helpful in fighting pests and disease. A good way to make sure your soil has the proper nutrients is to have it tested. Rotating crops is another way to keep pests or disease from gaining ground in your garden. Gardeners can also buy certified seed and plants which are bred to be disease- resistant - Any new plants you acquire should be isolated for a while so it is possible to determine whether it is healthy. This protects the other plants in your garden. When dealing with bugs and other garden pests, a strong blast of water from a hose may be enough to drive some away. This could prevent dogs from entering the area, but cats can usually jump over this type of barrier. Another suggestion on prevention is to give dogs a yard of their own. The pets could use this area to dig to the cool dirt underneath. This area should be fenced off from the rest of the lawn. When set up in this way, it provides a safe place for the dogs to play. Make sure there is shade and water for the dog to provide relief from the hot summer temperatures. A dog house is also important so the dog can get out of the rain. If you provide your dog with an area such as this, you should be able to prevent further damage to your lawn or garden in the future. It was Aso a little intimidating for anyone who had never attempted it before, so Kerri and interior decorator Corinne Scholey set up the workshops. This allows the customer to try the technique and make any mistakes on samples instead of on the walls in their homes. One area in the Chesterfield Factory has been painted and furnished to demonstrate the technique in a room setting. The walls in another area are used to show examples of the different looks that can be obtained with a sponge. Drop cloths and paint splatters decorate the only area of the first floor that is not beautifully furnished. This is where the 'hands- on' workshops are held. Participants need only a natural sea sponge, which they can either bring or buy at the class, and old painting clothes. Kerri supplies anything else that might be needed. Sponge painting workshops are $20 and marbleizing seminars are $30. This includes a free personalized decorating consultation with Corinne, who works with a popular home decorating magazine as well as with Lynette Jennings on the Homeworks television program. The dates for two upcoming classes are Thurs. Apr. 2 at 7 p.m., and Tues. Apr. 7 at 1 p.m. Classes run from 90 minutes to two hours, and registration is required to ensure a place. Chances are, you've just spotted Ruth Rotenber& the star's double. The Pickering woman, a trained actress, has been working as Martin's double for the pas five years on episodes of SCIV (now in mru ns) and other TV shows. "It's a ball. I think it's an addiction. The Belgian city is best known as the centre of the world's diamond trade, but next year will offer visitors a glimpse of its long cultural and industrial heritage through a year-long series of exhibitions and attrac- tions, starting in March. More than 10,000 "ex - Pats" are expected to make the jour- ney for the month-long celebration, which will feature 140 new events, above and beyond regular activities. Festival director Ray Cawley says people are "very excited" about the event, both at home and abroad. "We promise a very warm, Irish welcome," he says. Cawley says everyone is invited, but that the event will be especially interesting for ethnic and anglo-lrish visitors. `The aspect of genealogy is very high profile right now," says Cawley. "And all the heritage cen- tres are gearing up for the festival. Cawley advises that people seek- ing their family histories don't wait until the last minute. A form can be obtained from the Irish Tourist Board that will facilitate the research in advance. More than 30 clan rallies will be held in conjunction with the home- coming, from the O'Hanlons in Co. Down to the O'Shaugnesseys in Co. Galway. The festival kicks off Sept. I with a welcome in Cork; other events include the All -Ireland Hurling Final and football finals at Croke Park, the International Festival of Light Opera at Waterford, the Belfast Folk Festival and the Galway Oyster Festival. Cawley points out that all of Ireland will be participating - not just towns and cities on the regular tourist route. And he adds that the co-operation between the north and south is unprecedented in the area of tourism. Cawley also dispels any notion that the current IRA campaign in England will create problems at home. "We don't have any record of people being injured (as a result of terrorism) in the past. These events get a great deal of media attention, but the 99 per cent of normalcy we experience isn't covered. "We are concentrating on tourism. It is very important to us. and it is the great instigator for this (festival). After two albums of snail -paced ballads, framed hauntingly by Margo Timmins' ethereal vocals, the Toronto-based players just had to pick up the pace for the sake of their careers. Thankfully, they don't entirely abandon the dreamy trademark sound that helped estab- lish them, but with a little country - influenced rock on the side, the pacing is far better and makes for at least as good an album as their debut. Lott Reed - Magic aw Loss (WEA): Reed is at a stage of his career where anything he does is, if you'll pardon the pun, magic. This disc is no exception, though many may find it hard to get through; Reed is wearing his heart on his sleeve after the death of two close friends, and wondering about our mortality. There are sim- ilarities in places to his seminal work, New York, which is where his theme succeeds best; where it becomes challenging is with the similarities to Songs for Drella, his recent lament for friend Andy Warhol. Magic and Loss isn't easy, but it's worth the work. Buckwheat Zydeco - On Track (Virgin): A splendid Louisiana gumbo of pop, R&B and accordian-powered zydeco. Buckwheat, aka Stanley Dural, Jr., has what it takes to help this under -appreciated regional music cross -aver into the mainstream. Little Village - Self -titled (WEA): Unfortunately the word "super -group" has accompanied this newest collaboration between John Hiatt, Jim Keltner, Ry Cooder and Nick Lowe. However, none has actually achieved super- star status in the charts, and worse still, the word suggests expecta- tions that can't be met. Little Village is a solid album of pop/rock, heavily garnished with Rhythm & Blues, delivered by a quartet of accomplished veterans. But, please, iet's leave the word for deserving bands like... Asia? River City People - This is the World (EMI): The second album from this English foursome reflects the band's new "harder" edge coupled with an established sensitive side. In real terms, RCP sound like a cross between a gritty Pretenders and moody Concrete Blonde. It may not be original, but it's not without charm. Falling From Grace (Sdtk.) - Various (PolyGram): The sound- track to John Mellencamp's new movie venture is like an outtake from Mellencamp's rootsy Lonesome Jubilee sessions.
