The reasonable operating costs of natural gas, the versatility and reliability of natural gas appliances, and the enhanced resale value of homes equipped with natural gas, will continue to encourage builders to integrate natural gas systems in residential building. Enhancing homes with Natural Gas appliances Builders can now offer popular natural gas options to homebuyers because of multi -branching of equipment lines. A valve manifold is installed in an easily accessible location in the home, with copper tubing running from the manifold to various prime appliance locations, including fireplaces, back patios, front entrances and driveways. For complete homes, the installation of additional natural gas appliances is much easier and more economical with the simple addition of brass fittings. or retrofit add-on branching - Topping the list of preferred gas appliances is the modem natural gas fireplace. According to Joan Alfrey, the town's co-ordinator of economic development, there's cause for optimism as Pickering will experience an influx of several new industries as well as steady residential and commercial growth this vear. While the loss of -jobs has been an ongoing fact of life everywhere in Canada, Pickering has been relatively unscathed by major industrial closures and resulting job loss. "We've done very well, all considering," says Ms Alfrey. "At the end of 1991 there were 150 more jobs in town as compared to the end of 1990. Of all the towns in Durham Re -ion, we're probably faring the best." Thea were only two companies which have gone out of business this year, she says. The Allied Group and Belgo Fisher succumbed to the recession. 'pis Alfrey says both businesses were suppliers to the retail trade which has been the hardest hit by the recession. However, there was more than enough good news to offset the bad this year. The economic development co-ordinator announced two large companies will be calling Pickering home In the near future. CP Trucks will be turning the sod Don Mills to its new site on Brock Rd. in Pickering. Ms Alfrey says the planning process for Pitney Bowes has been completed and the company should begin to build its new headquarters, as well as research and development, customer service and All NA WIN sI shipping facilities by 1994 or 1995. -,, ' .: . _ _ She says also, growth in the ria anis - <F -r - J - residential building sector has been flG'n'`-wpm-lowx _ steady through the recession. "We're really excited about this one," says Ms Alfrey of the Trucks announcement. "Traditionally, they (communities) don't want trucking operations because they arc dirty and noisy. But, they're in an area where they won't annoy anyone. The truck. can go strught to Hwy. .401 and they won't be going through any residential areas." While the job spin-off from CP Trucks won't be immediately felt - the company already has -:00 Cnlploycea set to rc-locate to the Pickering facility - but in the future some Job opportunities may emerge. she says. In addition, the Town of Pickering recently announced that the American firm, Pitney Bowes - a manufacturer of office equipment - will move Its Canadian headquarters from Ferrand Dr. in If the long-range plan for the Seaton subdivision north of Pickering ever comes to fruition, this proposed 90,000- people community could push Pickering's population as high as 1750X1. Builders John Soddy, Cough's Investment, Lebovic and Bramalea Ltd. have continued to build upper - middle class and luxury homes north and south of Finch Ave, this year. Some pockets of average family homes and townhouses are also being built in this area, as well as the Altona Rd. arca south of Finch Ave. Another new residential development which still has to clear the planning hurdles is the proposed Port Cullis Gate development in the Whites Road -Hwy. 2 arca. Ms Alfrey describes this project as a mixed residential, commercial and condominium development. Please sM TOWN 1pago 17 Wildwood Ford hangs tough to beat competition By Wendv Ashton Shimkofskv Seven years ago Wildwood Ford Sales Ltd., on Kingston Rd. in Pickering, was in competition with only one other car dealership. Through the years, the competition has gotten tougher and the number of competing dealerships has increased by eight. Despite this, Wildwood Ford is not only still active in Durham, it is very active. Today, in an economic environment where many companies are forced to cut back on staff, general manager Bill McMaster is understandably proud that there has never been a lay-off at Wildwood Fad. As a matter of fact, the firm has added a few new employees and it has basically the same management team it has had for the past seven years. Ninety-nine per cent of the dealership's staff live in Durham, which helps the staff to put the needs of The community fust They are proud to cater to this area, offering special consideration to Durham residents. According to Mr. McMaster if something is a little "`iffy' under warranty, our people get the best fit." Staff are happy to give that little -extra to the community, whether it's in car sales and service or supplying local students with books to help combat the problem of drug and alcohol abuse. Mr. McMaster says, "All money #%&-on in remaine in Durham-" Above, some of Wildwood Ford's staff members in the attractive showroom. Inset, the dealership's general manager, Bill McMaster. Wildwood Ford does not advertise or sponsor groups outside the area. While the main focus of this dealership is, of cause, on car sales and service, interest extends into many other areas as weft - mchding community service. The walls of the showroom display 17 plaques of appreciation from various groups who have been sponsored over the years - Hanging proudly beside pictures of the children from local sports teams, there is an acknowledgement from the Shrine (nicus. Six hockey teams (three from Pickering and three from Ajax), a soccer club, a gymnastic club and a swim club are sponsored by Wiildwood Fad. The emphasis is placed on helping children under I 1 years of age, the group that Mr. McMaster feels has the greatest need. In terms of business, the dealership sees an exciting future just up ahead. Staff members are gearing up for the mid -summer debut of the new 1993 line of carm which includes the Escort, the Probe and the Viilisger Wagon, a smaller versiion of the popular Aaostar. In addition to this, Wildwood Ford is putting together a new way of buying a car. The customer will be offered the opportunity to lease or rent a car for two years, totally maintenance -free. AR maintenance fees are covered. When the oil needs to be changed the friendly staff at Wildwood Fad will take care of it. The customer has to be concerned only with the fad for the car and the monthly payment. Twenty-four months later, the car is exchanged for a brand new one and the customer has the pleasure of that `new car smell' again. At Wildwood Ford Sales, the policy has always been customer satisfactiion guaranteed but, given the wide -reaching extent of the community involvement, it is more than the customer whose satisfaction is guaranteed. It is the Durham community as well. For Jerry's The Drug Warehouse, he image has to do with engaging n the unusual, creating astir in the ndustry. And even while the business is getting bigger, owner Jerry Bclz foes everything he can to ensure prices stay small. Jerry, a 1958 graduate of the University of Toronto, with a Jegree in pharmacy, is the motivator behind four Jerry's locations. The most recent opening was in Ajax in February. It was eight years ago that Jerry opened his first drug store in Durham. That was in Whitby, and since then, he says unabashedly, other drug stores were forced to lower their prices to remain competitive. Of course, that only proved advantageous to the consumer. "1'm a discounter in the drugstore business," he admits. "I opened my first discount store in Toronto in 1960 and I never really owned a store that charged full price." Between negotiating better prices from the suppliers and purchasing large lots of cleared -out merchandise and stock from bankruptcies help him deliver the low prices for which his stores have become famous. The Ajax store comprises 1000 square feet of space. At the Pickering location, the largest of the four, there are 14 fully stocked aisles with everything from pharmaceutical, food. with the savings. The other welcome feature of this post office is that it is open the same hours as the store from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday, 9 to 6 on Saturday and 10 to 6 on Sunday. Staff members - most of whom live in the Durham community remain faithful. Bob Beattie, the manager of the Pickering store, for example, has been with Jerry for 15 years. Mark Bull, who manages the Whitby store, has been with the drug warehouse for seven years. What's the primary goal for the future" Jerry sums it up this way, "To build it, of course; to have more stores and lower prices." hardware and beauty supplies - all at everyday low prices. Whitby was the first Jerry's location to be opened in Durham_ At the time it was considered to be very large, even though it is now the smallest of the four. The cthc: store is in West Hill. Customers enjoy a 20 -percent discount on such brand name cosmetics as Revlon, L'Oreal, Cover Girl, Maybelline and Clarion every day of the week. As well, there are racks of popular magazines, ranging from news, fashion, sports and lifestyle, as well as the best selling books and novels, priced at 10 percent off the normal retail price. The most recent innovation - to be found at the Pickering location - is a discount post office. When customers purchase a book containing 10 42 -cent stamps, they pay just S3.88, and leave thrilled r e Above, staff members of Jerry's drug store in Ajax, from left, Maureen Sheppart, Jacquie Sackett and manager THE DRUG Darryl Brown. This store, which is the newest in the chain operating since 1959, provides a complete plumbing service. It also sells most supplies for bathrooms and kitchens, and is pan of the largest renovation chain in Canada. Customers are able to purchase much needed products for their plumbing needs, as well as the sesv;ces required. But if installing your own fixtures appeals to you, Plumbing Mart is known for providing advice and answering any questions you may have. "Our staff, which includes Martin Duarte and Charlie Henery, has a good background in the industry," says Sam Beninato, Sales and Renovation Coordinator for Plumbing Mart The business has enjoyed much success during its many years in operation. Its parts department has a huge selection of items in stock, from washers to copper piping. "If we don't have it on hand, we'll get it in quickly for you," says Sam. For new bathroom ideas and products, Plumbing Mart is a good place to start- See for yourself how relatively inexpensive it can be to renovate a kitchen or bathroom- or add that much needed second washroom. The bathroom today is regarded as one of the most important rooms in the house. It is a retreat where people enjoy spending time - whether relaxing in a whirlpool tub, or just getting themselves ready for the day ahead. Sam has encouraged many customers in the renovation process, Many who previously considered moving simply because of the need for an extra bathroom have discovered that if their primary motivation for selling is based on a deficient bathroom, came to see how relatively simple it was to add another bathroom instead It nearly .always proves to be a less costly choice. "This is a great time to replace your current bathroom; when you compare the cost of moving, which can run well over 20 thousand dollars with all the fees and commissions, a brand new bathroom is much more attractive in price," says Sam. A completely renovated bathroom with quality fixttues, fully installed by Plumbing Mart, costs between six and seven thousand dollars. "This is a much more economical. alternative to moving," says Sam. Phumbing Mart oversees the full operation of bathroom installations from the initial consuhtarion to final The Plumbing Mart showroom in Pickering. "A typical bathroom takes five days to complete; if we start on Monday, your bathroom is ready for you on Friday." The company backs up all parts and labor with its national warranty. Ifyour present bathroom suffers from a lack of square feet, trim a few feet from an adjoining spare bedroom. Sam says, "If you reduce a 10'x13' room to IWx % we can incorporate this extra 40 square feet into your new bathroom- You now have space for fixtures like a stand- alone corner shower, a larger whirlpool tub, and a double -sink varsity." And by tightening up the layout and using angles, existing room dimensions will also allow a brand new replacement bathroom in your home. Popularbrand names for bathrooms include American Standard, Kohler, and Moen. With the flexibility and creativity offered by this firm, no doubt this coming year will be even more successful than 1991. Marlin CRUISE GROUPS Travel SAVINGS UP TO 34% ALASKA with Holland America 13-25 AUG. In Ajax alone there are 17,000 subscribers to cable television services, and all of them are served by one company: Maclean Hunter Cable TV. The company began providing cable television to the Ajax area :n 1968, and has been dedicated to serving its community ever since. All 22 staff members of the Ajax office live in Ajax, allowing for quick response to after-hours emergencies. As residents, employees are a part of the community they serve, and therefore also appreciate the subscribers' point of view. Another important aspect of Maclean Hunter's service is its commitment to community television. As a member of the Cable Television Standards Council, it adheres to standards of customer service and community television. Active participation by residents is welcomed and encouraged, and the company holds regularly scheduled workshops workshops to train people in the production of such programs. At present. 40-50 active volunteers help to broadcast council meetings, special events. and other programs of community interest on Cable 10. Phone -in Aside from volunteer work, viewers are also invited to discuss any questions or comments they might have via a monthly phone-in show called "Cable TV and You". Hosted by General Manager Earl Dusek, the aim of the show is to allow subscribers to communicate directly with the General Manager and his guests. "Our objective is to have shows on the air that are a reflection of the community we serve," says Mr. Dusek, proving that quality community programming is an essential part of Maclean Hunter's TV operation. The quality of cable service! provided to subscribers is equall) important. That's why Maclean Hunter is launching a new Full Cable Service on March 31 of this yerr• Full Cable Service will introduce four additional channels to the service subscribers are already receiving. In addmon io The $pail 1\eiwui (TSN) for sports lovers and MucbMusic for music knrers, Art$ A Entertainment (ASE), Cable News Network (CNN) and The Nashville Network (TNN) are sure to be popular, along with a new service, Hea d1line News. All of these services, which were previously only available as Pay - TV, will be added to subscribers' basic service at no charge for a three-month period. And diose who continue to receive Full Cable Ser+ice after the trial period will month- pay about $2 mere per .L ....L/.. L;11 pleased to know that a third U.S. Superstation, WSBK, Boston, will be added to their service at no extra charge. Due to the introduction of these services, Maclean Hunter Cable TV will also be re -aligning the channels on March 31. Information packages outlining the details of the new Full Cable Service and the channel re- alignment will have been sent to subscribers before these changes take place: anyone who doesn't receive the package is invited to contact Maclean Hunter Cable TV for information. "Cable TV and You" will air on March 24 and 31, to answer questions, and generally acquaint viewers with the new services. Although the introduction of Full Cable Service is the newest addition to Maclean Hunter Cable TV's service, it is not the only improvement to be made in recent years. Last year the company introduced a closed caption decoder service for hearing impaired customers. For a refundable deposit of $25, qualifying customers are provided with a closed caption decoder, and are able to use it free of charge for as long as they continue to subscribe. Maclean Hunter Cable TV also emphasizes its repair line, answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Service calls to subscribers are free, and in fact, the company encourages viewers to contact the staff if a problem occurs with their service. The better aware staff are of the problems subscribers are experiencing, the better they can serve the community. With all of the changes and improvements underway at Maclean Hunter Cable TV, it's easy to see why the firm has adopted Ajax's motto - "Better than Ever Apx fthw rg Nm Ad wNw Rop w E660% A6idi 1AAR AMP 19 X...Better than ever! ®.b, Mayor Town of Ajax The Council of the Town of Ajax is committed to expand our commercial and industrial brut. With 20 different kitchens, bathrooms and fixtures on display in the spacious and impressive Pickering showroom, the potential home -improver can get a realistic idea of how his house might be transformed. "We strive to show what the finished product will look like while making displays as interesting and realistic as possible. Even the Jacuzzis actually work," claims Raymond A. Binns, president of the company. Established in 1963, Binns is still very much a family -run operation, with five Binns family members actively involved. Brothers Raymond and Anthony S. Binns, C.K.D. have been running the business since their father retired eight years ago, but as Raymond is quick to point out, "all 15 employees work together as a team to be successful. We continually learn from each other." "These designers must pass very stringent tests and it takes at least seven years to acquire the design, planning and installation expertise required to gain the qualification. Mike Hetherman, C.K.D., one of our designers, recently received a Merit Award for exceptional service and a Professional Design Award from the National Kitchen and Bath Association. This is especially impressive when you consider that this design contest involved thousands of contestants in North America" Extremely apparent is a strong commitment to the customer. "Service was crucial to us from An one and we'll continue to do through existing clients. "Remodelling a kitchen or bathroom can be disruptive. We act like invited guests in our client's home and respect the people we're `staying with'. Our staff are trained to be thoughtful so they don't turn the water off at 7 am., for example. Like any good relationship, communication is key." A consultation with a Binns designer could take as long as six to eight hours, regardless of your budget. "We don't design kitchens for houses but for the family that lives in them," explains Mr. Binns. "Kitchens are not just for food preparation and we like to get to know the clients and their lifestyle. Hobbies, height and even whether the chief cook is right- or left- handed all contribute to the client's overall comfort with their new kitchen." In its picturesque park -like setting it Church St. N. and Taunton Rd., 'ine Rid -e Memorial Gardens has tow commenced its fourth year of ;erving the Ajax and Pickering ;om munities. During the past three years, sardens have: been developed on the property to offer a varied selection of burial and memorial choices, and large areas have been designated for special interest groups. As part of this, Pine Ridge assistant manager Ron Koury has been helping members of local churches by advising and arranging special programs for their members. One of the first group of burials on the property was the interment of the remains of 10 early settlers who were unearthed when a new subdivision was started near Pickering Beach Rd. and Beachview St. in Ajax. Pine Ridge property manager, Ralph Harris, and manager, Catherine Dolson, with the assistance of a number of local residents, have been endeavoring to identify these pioneers. Headstones that were in place before the subdivision was developed have disappeared, but, as the cemetery was on property believed to be the Powell Farm, the graves could have contained memt>Lrs of the Powell Family. If anyone has any information to assist in locating these headstones, or to help identify the burials, please contact the Pine Ridge office. Renovations, which began in February and are to be completed in the first week of April, "will bring the Do -It Centre into the 90s," says president Randy Henry. Design areas are currently being built to help the customers select the products best suited to their home. Room -like settings will make co-ordinating kitchens and bathrooms easier by bringing all the elements together. Staff will be available to offer any assistance necessary, including going into the customer's home to measure and help calculate the materials needed. The roofing centre located at the back of the store is one of the new additions. This is not simply where the roofing supplies are located; the structure is also used to display shingles, allowing the consumer to see the various colors and styles as they would look on an actual roof. Another proposal, intended to help the consumer make informed decisions, is a 'house' with cut- away walls and roof designed to show different styles of windows as well as insulation and vapor barriers. The house will also be used by the staff to demonstrate installation techniques. Starting the end of April Henry's Do -It Centres will be offering consumer clinics every Saturday. Topics will include: drywall installation, basic plumbing and electrical work, plus building recreation rooms. For anyone interested in a fence and deck course, April 25th is the day to mark on the calendar. The clinics are an ongoing service offered by Henry's Do -It Centres. Now, if the proposed workshop topics have gotten your attention but the tools on your workbench just don't measure up to the task, the new Rent -All is just for you. With tools and construction equipment available to rent, there is no need to make costly purchases for every project you decide to undertake. Although prices at Henry's Do -It Centres are competitive and Randy Henry guarantees that they won't be undersold, that is not what makes Henry's Do -It Centre unique. It is the service: "That's the number one," according to Mr. Henry. A customer can bring in blueprints for a house or cottage and get a complete breakdown of materials in terms of cost and amount required, have the supplies selected and shipped out to the site. It is this type of service that sets them apart from the competition. In keeping with the idea of making shopping more convenient, the selection of merchandise has been greatly increased so that everything the customer requires is available in one store. New products arc available to help customers conserve energy, provide home security, decorate a house and organize their life. Henry's Do -It Centres are true one-stop centres for every need. Such an experience, whether it is once a week or once every six mon!hs.. should be savored and enjoyed. The establishment should be an oasis where you can retreat from your normal routine - a place where attention is paid to every detail of your dining experience, from the moment you arrive until the time the staff bids you 'goodbye for now'. If you are thinking that restaurants of this calibre are found only in downtown Toronto, save your gas and travel time. The Lord Byron Restaurant at 1725 Kingston Rd. in Pickering, has been creating pleasurable dining experiences for customers since May, 1989. "We have worked very hard during this time, and feel that our restaurant is an asset to the Durham Region," says George, who owns the Lord Byron Restaurant. George also gives credit to other restaurants in the area, who, with the Lord Byron, make up a group of attractive eating establishments catering to people in this region. The Lord Byron is a family affair for George, who works with his wife and two daughters in the restaurant. "We truly enjoy this business and work together as a team," he says. With 40 years of experience in the hospitality industry to guide him, George has mastered the art of designing and managing a restaurant that makes you feel warm and welcome during your stay. "Almost everybody who dines out does so for some reason. regardless of the significance. We try to make your meal a memorable experience, not just with our food, but with our service and overall ambience too. ..The guiding philosophy at the Lord Byron is to treat customers as w: would want and expect to be treated ourselves," George explains. Since dining is a very emotional experience, the Lord Byron insists on very high standards, from the immaculately clean premises to the cordial personalities of the staff. George emphasizes that his kitchen is always open to customers who would like to peek "behind the scenes", inspect the facilities, see how the food is prepared, and meet the chef. "We would be delighted to extend this courtesy to anyone," he says. The Lord Byron has many regular customers who are now considered friends by the staff. "Good food and good service are directly related, and we strive for the best in both," says George. `"lite result is `good memories' for our customers. Being located in the mall may be a little deceiving from the outside at first. But when you enter the Lord Byron you realize why many people call its indoor environment a wonderfully guarded secret. The inretriar's blended softness was the George and family, operators of Lord Byron's Seafood in Pickering. Customers are pleasantly surprised at the regular addition of new touches in the Lord Byron Restaurant. These features include everything from new menu items, such as dishes catering to low - cholesterol diets, to the installation of new sound equipment for a tasteful musical background. Friday nights will now be an evening with live entertainment, featuring vocals, keyboards, and bouzouki (a Greek instrument). Future entertainment plans include bringing in a piano player for dinner music. The meals at the Lord Byron Restaurant cover a full range of seafood (most of it broiled), steaks, salads, and a variety of carefully prepared dishes. The Caesar's Salad is a must to order - this dish is put together for you right at your table. Authentic Greek cuisine is another specialty of the house. Luncheons feature everything from omelettes to veal Parmesan. A staff of 15 to 20 is involved with the operation of the Lord Byron Restaurant. Luncheon is served Monday to Friday from noon to 4 p.m., dinner Monday to Thursday is available from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; dinner on Friday and Saturday is served from 5 on. Groups are welcome at any time for celebrations of birthday;, anniversaries, office parties, and the like. However, the Lord Byron is also available for private bookings on Sundays for any size group up to 135. It has been serving the community for 14 years now, supplying everything from automotive parts to portable stereos. And while its reputation for quality and service is as solid as ever, it certainly is not the same old store. Major changes have taken place since owner Dennis McCullough took over the store in August of last year. With 30 years of service with f Canadian Tire behind him, he promised to maintain the high standards of quality and service that residents of Pickering had come to expect. He's done that and more, taking an active role in all aspects of the store's day to day operation. In fact, the whole family is IM involved with the business; Mr. 1 McCullough's wife, Sheila, handles most of the administrative work, son Jason is the assistant store manager, and daughter Shelley works in the payroll departrnent. Commitment 'As recently as last year, another :on, Todd, worked as store manager. With such a strong family commitment it's easy to see why this Canadian Tire store is such a success. Mr. McCullough is quick to add, however, that the employees arc really the backbone of the company. All staff members receive thorough training, not only in their respective fields, but also in the art of Customer service. Each one is dedicated to providing the best service possible. Canadian Tire has 23 employees in its automotive service department alone, all of whom are constantly upgrading their skills. Whenever a new product is launched or an improvement is made, service technicians make sure to keep up to date with the changes. Having the most current information means better service for customers, which is the company's main goal. "I've made a commitment to give the consumer the best service I can possibly give, and to maintain the values that customers have come to rbexpec t,- says Mr. McCullough. One of the newest changes to be made is the concept of All Out Retailing. In January of this yea, the store began an experiment with this new type of merchandising. Instead of storing quantities of a product in a warehouse location, merchandise is now stored directly on the retail floor. Products in the back section of the store are displayed in overhead racks, extending from the original shelves up towards the ceiling. This way goods are more readily CIvailable to the consumer, and it SO saves in handling and warehouse costs. Feedback from customers has been very positive; shoppers like the convenience of having quantities of a product available within the store. Sales have even increased since the implementation of All Out Retailing, and by early i pAt YOB.. of the store's displays to this format. On a smaller scale, some products have been moved around within the store as a convenience to shoppers. Everyday products like flashlight batteries and household goods have been moved to the front of the store, to make them easier to find. Another reason for the remerchandising is to allow room for a new section, called Home Enhancements. This section will be a delight for the home handyman. A whole range of new products will be introduced, such as custom blinds, wallpaper, and new kinds of lighting fixtures. Anything from storm doors to closet organizers will be available, sure to please any Bo - it -yourself enthusiast. One of the changes Pickering residents might remember was the building of the enclosed Seasonal Centre. At one time, seasonal equipment and products were kept outside in a fenced -in area beside the store. While enclosing the area was a great improvement, last April the management took down the wall that once divided the centre from the rest of the store. Making improvements to the overall look of the store is only part of the total commitment to customer satisfaction. Convenience New ideas are always surfacing. Currently there arc plans to put a customer information booth in the centre aisle of the store, to help customers with any inquiries they might have. This will be in addition to the customer service booth already in existence. Signs will be changed so that they are simpler and easier to understand, to help people find what they're looking for more quickly. Shopping carts will be provided indoors, again for the convenience of the customer. Management is stages, it shows that staff at this it's all about. So next time you're also considering holding a women's outlet are always thinking of new in the area, stop in and see the neve, car repair workshop. Staff members of CD Plus, at left, have much to smile about. The store . v had its grand opening on Nov. 28, 1991, and ' chose to open in this area to take advantage of the lower rental costs, ';• so savings could be passed on to customers. - CD Plus, located at 1050 Brock Rd., Unit 1, (just south of Hwy. 401), offers a wide selection of compact discs and Custom furniture making . an an at Chesterfield Factory Making good furniture is no accident, as the Nowensky family, I who operate The Chesterfield Factory on Bayly St. in Pickering will tell you. From its exterior, you wouldn't expect that there is a 10,000-sq.ft. facility, building and reconstructing fine furnishings. Inside the factory area at the rear and upper level, there is a flurry of activity. A master chesterfield maker sees a job through from beginning to end, providing first- rate quality control over each item. The husband and wife team of Lee and Willie Nowensky head this operation, ably assisted by son Todd and daughter Kern. Any member of this family will tell you, they are in the business of making quality furniture, That means, frames are made of hardwood, joints are glued and dwelled. There is no metal or wood showing through the padded upholstery. The fabric must be smooth, with perfectly matched patterns and lined skirts. Also helpful, of course, is the very personal assistance given to residential and commercial customers. (The Chesterfield Factory has furnished office lobbies, country clubs, and other institutions). A bonus for customers who register for the firm's sponge painting or marbleizing class offered by the Chesterfield Factory is the free mini -decorating consultation. Cheaper telephone calls, with local rates as far east as Oshawa and to a broad region of the Toronto area, is one of the attractive features. But so, too, is the town's proximity to metropolitan Toronto, while retaining its 'small-town' character. The town has the distinct advantage of having a diverse economy, relying on various industries, which include automotive support, software creation, metal fabrication, and electronics, to name just some. And that [rend is continuing, with Town officials constantly looking to woo industries and commerce. If air conditioning is not yet part of your thermostat control, then it is time to give some serious thought to installing this vital component that will give your home complete warm -weather comfort. By picking up the telephone today and giving A-1 Air Conditioning & Heating a call, you can have a Carrier central air-conditioning unit installed in your home within the week. Ben Hillier owns the A-] Air Conditioning & Heating franchise serving this area. He operates the company under his business, Lakeview International Inc. Ben has been with A- I for over nine years, and is aggressively directing his company's growth as it expands eastward. Convention -We ser%ice Scarborough, Markham, Stoufl%ille, and as far east as Newcastle." says Ben. a refrigeration and air-conditioning specialist for the past IS )ear,,. &:n has also acquired his gas fitter's license and is nor lulh qualified to supervise all air-condiuoninl_ and heating installations. A -I Air Conditioning & Heating is no stranger to the business. For the past 25 years this company, owned by the Messenger family, has been scr%icing the greater Toronto area from its Oak,, isle headquarters. A- I has a fleet of 1.3 truck,. on the road and a team of heating and air-conditioning specialists on staff. Outside contractors are not used. Aggressive In recognition of a quarter century of selling and servicing Carrier Products, A-1 was recently honored by the Carrier company at a dealer convention. A special award was presented by Carrier to A- l Air Conditioning & Heating. Late winter and early spring is the best time of year to have air conditioning installed in your home or business. In fact, most jobs that A-1 is completing at this time are central A/C units says Ben. "We have some very attractive promotions on right now, such as no payment until 1993, or discounts for cash payments." In addition to these incentives, as a 25th anniversary special, the equipment is warranteed for six years parts and labor, provided the unit is inspected annually. Normally, the warranty period is one year puts and labor, and five years on the compressor. If your home or building has electric baseboard, or hot water heat, A-] can instali a Sanyo 'slim - line' air-conditioning system for compressor is located outside, with the 15" cooling unit installed on an inside wall. The inside equipment is equally quiet and is controlled with its own thermostat. With various sizes available, the Sanyo is perfect for computer rooms, solariums, townhouses, churches, or restaurants. Perhaps your old oil or gas furnace is close to puffing its last breath of hot air, and you are thinking about replacing the beast. Ben suggests you consider one of Carrier's fine mid- or high - efficiency gas furnaces. "About three-quarters of our customers arc selecting the high - efficiency model, which gives them a 43 per cent savintzs over a conventional model," explains Ben. Industry standards for 1992 sprcify that standard efficiency furnaces have to be KO per cent; Carrier's high -efficiency gas furnaces arc 96 per cent energy efficient. And one major advantage to the new models that many customers appreciate is that thcrk i,, no pilot light to worry about. A-1 will give you a detailed no - obligation quotation on the installation of either air- conditioning or heating equipment. "Your house sire, age, amount of insulation, window space and capacity of the duct system are all factors we take into consideration, and we will then give you a quote right down to the exact nickel," says Ben. To keep your heating and cooling systems performing at their peak potential, Ben recommends a summer or fall furnace check-up where the unit is cleaned and inspected for cracks. A springtime appointment is suggested as well for air-conditioning units. "Don't wait until the first heatwavc in April or May to find that your central air unit doesn't work - be prepared and have it inspected now." A- I Air Conditioning & Heating is an authorized dealer for Consumers Gas. The company will visit your home or business Monday to Saturday at a time convenient to you. Construction on the mill began in 988. Although installation of ,nme equipment is still continuing, reduction of the newsprint began a January, 1991, right on schedule. Admittedly, there were start-up ;problems but general manager Bob Nelson reports that the plant is presently at its rated capacity. By the end of .1992 it will have produced 150,000 tonnes of recycled newsprint. The majority of the supply of newspapers and magazines used to make the newsprint comes from Canadian sources, and the Durham ,:ommunity is a major supplier. %laterials must be trucked in from outside Canada if the demand . annot be met locally. At present corrugated cardboard is :,recessed only at the Scarborough Ian[, which has been in operation ,ince 1968. That plant handles . ".(X)0 tonnes a month. Some of anis cardboard comes from the Durham region. .although the procedure for turning :7e newspapers and magazines into -sable recycled newsprint is fairly -ample, the technigvies and :quipment used are quite complex. materials, after being sorted to aaratc the newspapers and aagazines, are taken to a machine _ailed the pulper, which adds water .,nd chemicals to prepare the paper. 1ny foreign objects - such as : ubber bands and staples - are removed during the cleaning ;processes before special equipment s used to separate the inks from the ;fibres. It is this de -inking process ,Vhich is especially complex and mills are very secretive about their own individual methods. After de -inking, the pulp is cleaned and refined. At this point it 0s ready for the same paper -making process that is used to make regular paper. It only takes a few hours to turn the newspapers and magazines into the finished product. Due to varying cost factors, it is difficult to compare the cost of making recycled newsprint with the cost of more traditional methods of creating newsprint. In terms of environmental issues, recycled newsprint is the choice for the future but its producers are not offered a premium for it. Because @hey must compete on the world market with the makers of regular newsprint, their asking price cannot be any higher. The de -inking plant shipped to the United States a few weeks ago, the American market is often on a trial basis despite the fact that there is no real difference in quality between traditional newsprint and recycled newsprint. ''The difficulty," says %Ir. Nelson, P10aso sN ATLANTIC'S/ pays 3S In business now for seven years, Factory Mattress entered the new year on a positive note. On Jan. 1, it moved to 1698 Bayly St., to a facility with a larger showroom as well as a larger manufacturing area. Despite the slow economic climate of the past year, those involved in the operation are not complaining about the pace of business. While they certainly won't turn away any business, they realize that people are extremely cautious about spending. Together, Robert Ocampo, Mario Rico and Stella Ricco are intent on providing the kind of service that customers remember. It helps, of course, that their products - comfortable mattresses and attractive bedroom frames - are things that customers view as a kind of a reward in themselves. We all know that a good night's sleep has an impact on your early morning mood, your ability to cope with stress, your job performance, and ultimately affects your relationships. understand the desire of the Factory Mattress team to ensure customers shop for 'quality'when they are buying a bed. For comfort, the search begins with the mattress and box spring. Robert Ocampo maintains that investing in quality will pay off in the long run. The bed will last longer. Made on premises All mattresses and box springs sold at Factory Mattress arc made right on the premises. General manager Mario Rico adds that a foam mattress is generally, "more cushiony; provides more comfort." There are, however, different densities of foam, and prospective buyers should compare these different densities to pinpoint their own preference. A similar testing should also be given to the spring mattresses, which, unlike the foam, comprise different size coils and steel gauges. Simply by lying or sitting on the mattress, a client will get a sense of how comfortable the In short, the construction of the mattress and the amount of padding affect the comfort. Factory Mattress does a large amount of custom work. That means any individual can have a mattress as hard or as soft as they require. Turnaround time from the time a custom order is placed to the time the mattress is ready, is normally three to five days. The Pickering store also retails frames. Factory Mattress sells brass or pickle -plated bed frames p (has a black appearance). The nickle-plated beds range from 5279 to $380, while pure brass beds start at $500; mattress and box spring are extra. As well, a complete line of bedding is available: duvets, bedspreads, and shams. Prices range from economical to more high-end, for imported Egyptian cotton bed sets. Top Durham builder helps make home- buying easy For the homebuyer seeking a top- quality executive home, Coughlan Homes is offering another opulent development in Durham. Gates to the Rouge is a small enclave of clay brick homes situated close to the Rouge Valley in Pickering. Having just come on the market. the 28 houses will be ready to move into by July of this year. Located off Altona Rd., just south of Sheppard Ave., the Coughlan - built -home offers homebuyers "a no -risk way to move up to a top quality home," according to sales representative Elaine Wagman. Referring to the builder's Guaranteed Move Program, Elaine explains that Coughlan will buy clients' existing homes after having the property appraised for current market value. A 7.9 per cent first mortgage financing for three years is also currently available, contributing to the keen interest being shown in the development. Elaine believes, however, the main reason people are attracted to Coughlan homes is due to the builder's reputation. "Tttey offer the highest standards as far as building codes go. When you buy a Coughlan home, you're buying an investment which greatly appreciates over time, and I sincerely mean that." Suiting either traditional or modern tastes, the close proximity to rapid transit, shopping, schools and community amenities is of great appeal to the young family. Beverly Hills Weight Loss Clinics offer a guaranteed weight loss program designed for the individual. it is based on nutritional requirements, lifestyle and medical background. There are different programs for different people because not everyone is the same; and there are no classrooms or lectures. At Beverly Hills, staff base your weight loss at a 2 Ib per week projection. People who lose weight at a slower, more consistent rate are those who keep the weight off because they have given their bodies a chance to adjust to their new weight. And to make sure Beverly Hills patients keep their weight off, the clinic offers a six-week stabilization program where food portions are increased at a slow rate so you don't experience weight fluctuation. Located at 1950 Notion Rd. in Pickering, the firm has expanded from two service trucks to seven in the last two years alone. I The business offers fast, friendly, .ind reliable tire service within minutes of a 'phone call. As a result, it has flourished, mostly by word-of-mouth. Nestled north of Finch Ave. off Fairport Rd. in Pickering, the community of executive -style homes has been built around existing forest and ravines, creating appeal to those who love nature. Sales representative Elaine Wagman points out another aspect of the attraction, that is, Coughlan's reputation as the number one builder in the Durham Region. "Many of our buyers have already lived in a Coughlan home and appreciate the quality workmanship. You're buying an investment when you buy one of our homes and getting 100% value for your money. "Coughlan takes great pride in design, and maintains very high standards in building. Service is critical, too. If anything's wrong• it's fixed right away." The builder's head office is located in Ajax. Having spent the last 25 years building high-quality homes in Durham, Coughlan opts to retain as many original trees and brush as possible. This provides a pleasant change from most barren, new developments. Many of the tradesmen have been With Coughlan for years, contributing to the dedication to high standards of workmanship. Opened in June of 199 1, just less than a third of homes arc left in the Ravines of Fawn's Landing development. "Sales have been consistent with many people from the region looking to upgrade. Housing sales climbing — Most are second- and third -time buyers with young families who appreciate our classic and contemporary look, which suits both traditional and modern lifestyles," notes Ms Wagman. The close proximity to amenities such as schools, shopping and community facilities is an added attraction. A great bonus to those wishing to trade up without taking a large risk, is the Guaranteed Move Programme. Coughlan will buy clients' existing homes after having the property appraised for current market value. "This buy-back policy has helped people attain their goals to move up. We're also offering an excellent three-year mortgage rate," the sales representative adds. The spacious elegance of the homes, which range from 2,877 to 3,726 square feet and start at 5319,000, is enhanced by a large variety of standard features. Clay brick exteriors, plush broadloom, brass -plated hardware on interior doors, an intercom It looks like recent government incentives for first-time homebuyers has had a positive effect on February's housing sales in Durham - During February, 499 homes were sold locally through. the Multiple Listing Service (MLS), according to figures released by the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board, which includes Ajax and surrounding area. This figure is an increase of ,almost 75 percent over January MLS sales, which saw 287 houses sold. The government incentives include the reduction of the downpayment for fust -time buyers from 10 to five percent. As well, this group of buyers are allowed to use up to $20,000 of their RRSPs towards a home. ODREB figures show 127 homes have been sold in .Ajax from the beginning of the year to March 13. This compares with a total of 193 houses sold through MLS for all of 1991. system, kitchen pantries, floor -to - ceiling masonry fireplaces, 9 -foot main floor ceilings, ceramic tiling and solid oak handrails on open basement to second floor staircases are just a few examples of the many features included in the six different models' overall package. Many homes overlook an open - spaced tree preservation area and feature basement walkouts to the back yard. Lots range form 15 to 20 metres wide and offer either two- or three -car garages. Custom upgrades are also available. The demand for four-bedroom horses hasn't dropped in recent years as families grow and people find their children returning to the "nest." Citing the old adage that one nice person attracts another, Ms Wagman is thrilled with the way the neighNA(xxl is shaping up. ,.Some very lovely families have been drawn to this development." she says.
