Teachers' maximum salaries would increase from $59,344 to 564,714 under the proposal, and the board estimates the cost to taxpayers would increase 15 per cent. Trustees also passed another motion at the meeting demanding that the negotiators for the teachers take the board's final offer to their members for a supervised vote. All but one trustee, Oshawa's Jim Woodward, approved that motion. "I don't think at this point we should force the teachers to take a proposal back to the membership when negotiations haven't been completed," he said_ qtr. AJAX-PICKERING - A trust fund has been established at Ajax's Faith Way Baptist College in memory of a Pickering pastor killed in a car crash last week. Steven Johnston, 22, died Feb. 13 after being thrown from his vehicle in a two -car collision at Nelson and Wentworth Sts., Oshawa. Mr. Johnston, a Dellbrook Ave. resident, was assistant pastor at Vaughan Baptist Church in Pickering and studied at Faith Way Baptist College. He had been married only eight weeks and was a newcomer to Pickering, moving here in January. He had a zeal for Iife, a love for the Lord and a desire to see his dreams accomplished," says his 20 -year-old widow, Jenny. "The dreams Steve had will live on for- ever. He was a great guy." Mr. Johnston's dreams, she says, were working with troubled teenagers, starting his own church, beginning a Canadian Christian newsletter and seeing Faith Way Baptist College grow. His family intends to carry on with plans for the newsletter. Mr. Johnston's father had also died tragically, the victim of a freak farming accident, says Mrs. Johnston. "God doesn't make any mis- takes: he'll take care of me," she says. -The Lord had prepared me for Steve's death. The Lord will be a husband to the husbandless.- She usbandless"She says between 500 and 600 mourners attended her husband's funeral Monday in Barrie where he grew up. Contributions to the trust fund can be sent to Faith Way Baptist College. 1964 Salem Rd., Ajax, Ont., LIS 2S7. "rhe volume of calls is very high," he explained at last week's police services board meeting, "but a lot are being harxHed right in the communications room, rather than having to dispatch a cruiser." Police responded to nearly 173,000 calls in 1991 (about 500 calls a day), down from about 175,000 the previous year. Overall, crime increased 4.4 per cent in Durham region last year — 3.8 per cera in crimes against people and 4.5 per cent in crimes against property. Motorists had a better year on the region's roads, with an 11.9 -per cent decrease in driving offences and a 5.5 -per - cern drop in accidents. Sadly, however, chief Edwards noted that deaths due to traffic accidents rose 75 per cent to 42 in 1991 from 24 the previous year. People can't afford significant tax hikes as they try to struggle free of the grasp of this recession. So. school boards, town councils and Durham region must seriously consider where they can make budget cuts. One area that can't be touched, though, is policing. In fact, we'd recommend that regional council give thought to any budget increases the police department requests. Durham police chief Dave Edwards said last week "the economic climate" is likely responsible for the 47 -per cent increase in arson from 1990 to 1991. The economy is probably also the reason for the "astronomical" 76 -per cent rise in armed hold-ups and the jump in convenience store robberies. Police inspector Ed Wilson thinks the increased robberies, partic- ularly those involving theft of cigarettes, are "linked to the econo- my. These are hard times and people are looking to make a quick dollar overnight." Like drug dealers. Cops are winning some battles in the war on dope, especially since the launch a year ago of Durham's eight - member drug squad. They arrested close to 400 people and seized drugs valued at $744,000 in 1991. If the police chief were given twice as many drug squad members, they'd "double the stats". Of course, we probably can't afford to double his staff in any area. But, it would likely be far costlier to cut back on the number of cops we have. PUD by Steve Nease WHERE's YOUR ' IN MY KNAPSACK. You see print, you read it. Readless Ilednesday exposes plight sof illiterates - DURHAM - Could you get through a day without reading? Test yourself on Readless Wednesday, Feb. 26. The Literacy Council of Durham Region declared the day Readless Wednesday to give people some insight into the daily difficulties faced by people who cannot read. About 28,000 people in Durham region are functionally illiterate. They can read some, but not enough to perform daily tasks in the workplace or at home. On Wednesday try getting through the day without reading the morning newspaper, the advertising on the bus, the memo from your boss or other written instructions. For many, reading is auto- matic — see how long you can hold out. Call the READ Hotline at 1- 800-263-0993 (or locally 434- 5441) to tell the problems you had, and how long you lasted. But for thousands of adults in Durham region, reading isn't that simple. The Literacy Council of Durham Region estimates that about 28,000 people here are func- tionally illiterate. Bill Whalley, community out- reach officer for the literacy coun- cil, says, "A person who is func- tionally illiterate is a person who can read, but not well enough to get along in the workplace or in everyday living. He has difficulty reading directions, memos or instructions." Mr. Whalley says literacy starts at home. Reading is taught as a subject in school only until about Grade 4, he says, but kids who are encouraged to read and enjoy read- ing at home won't end up illiterate. That's why the literacy council has declared Feb. 22 to 29 Regional Family Literacy Week. He says the aim of the week is to focus attention on how important it is to read with your children dur- ing their formative years. From Feb. 22 to 29 Radcliffe the . Once you feel comfortable with the benefits of an RRSP, you will need to decide what kind of RRSP plan is best for you. Financial institutions offer a wide variety of options but basically there are two types: 1. Interest bearing deposits that give a fixed return over a select term on your investment or variable rates. 2. Investment funds known as mutual funds that pool your savings along with others and invest them im stocks, money market instrument or a combiination of investments. Over certain periods, stock portfolios have tended to offer returns superior to interest bearimg deposits. Generally speaking though, the higher the return on an investment, sine higher the potential risk of fluo iation or loss. Each person's cin umstances and per- sonality ar. unique, and it is important tr decide what kind of investment lou feel comfortable with. There are some things you should consider before making a decision: 1. How mar. ; years do you have to go before you retire? Younger people can afford to talo a long term view of their retirement than those close to retirement. Stock orpmW investmmis may make sense for younger people. If you -Part 3of3) are close to retirement, you should look at investments that have minimal or no risk. 2. How much would you worry about your investments? When the stock markets are constantly climbing, it's hard to think of the downside but it does happen. If you won't be able to sleep at night worrying about your retirement savings invested in stocks, then a deposit option may be best for you. Attending seminars and reading publications will help you [Hake an informed decision. Pick an RRSP option that you feel comfortable with and that suits your circumstances. Once you've decided on the investment best suited to you, take a close look at the features and benefits of the plans being offered. Read over the. legal documentation that pertains to the type of plan you've selected and be sure you understand exactly what it is you are buying. The Let's Dance Club will host the 21 st Ontario Star Ball March 7, with competitors coming from across the province. R PAGE 12-T= NEW ADVMn II= FRMAY, FEES. 21,1"1 Pickering country musician 'headed uptown' with new record By JOHN DUARTE Durham Staff DURHAM - It's not that D.J. Hopson has been pushing his musical career along, but he is just as glad his first recording project is now available to the public. A 20 -year love affair with music is wrapped up in A Day in the Life, a 10 -song project available on compact disc and cassette. When he returned from Nashville, Hopson knew he had something to be proud of. "I haven't been in any hurry," he says over a coffee, while discussing the record release sometime in the near future. "Each step has been carefully planned and it has all been part of the learning curve." A Day in the Life is not the first music release for the Pickering performer. He has some: singles to his credit, most notably Cold Front, which made it to the ninth position on Canada's country music charts_ The record is, however, a pro- gression. I carne away from Nashville, after doing the fast two singles, saying there's get to be a better way of doing things," Hopson says. "I knew- what I had to do, but I also knew I couldn't do it all myself." That prompted the singer to form the team that would lead to the recording and launch of A Day in the Life — people like joe Wood of RDR Promotions, producer Tony Migliore and Brian Perkin, who helped Hopson choose the songs for the record. --here is virtually no music in the music busi- ness. It is all business. Their is no place for egos," says Hopson. "1 got involved with some people I trust with my life. I knew what I had to do — sing." To help him with his part, Hopson took some singing lessons, he admits for the first time in his life. He says that too was a learning experience. "I found out my problems were with breathing," he says. "My pitch was fine, but I kept anticipating the beat. You can be behind the beat all the time, but if you are ahead of it you're dead." A little more confident. Hopson headed back to Chelsea Studio in Nashville. He was amazed at how comfortable he had become in the studio, and the recording process for A Day in the Life took two The material on the album covers a variety of country music sounds. There are the traditional country ballads and some songs leaning more toward honky-tonk. Hopson describes his whole sound as "uptown traditional. "I come from a traditional country background," he says. "That is where my music is. But I've taken that traditional country background and headed uptown." A Day in the Life reflects what Hopson wants to accomplish with this project. He says the song selection was designed to find "where my niche is in radio play". But, again, it is all part of a larger plan - The next album. Hopson says, will be more of a concept recording. Ona he has an idea of what the public enjoys most in his music, he can better tailor his next project to the listeners' tastes. All I know is that I'm going back to Nashville to do some more recoding, which will lead to another album.- Hopson says. "But for now, I'll enjoy this one a little bit." Spectators can dance too FROM PAGE 11 dancing, steps are the jive, samba, rumba, cha-cha and paso doble. The last Star Ball was in 1989. The ball wasn't held the last two years because of renovation work on the Ajax Community Centre. Of the first 20 balls, 19 were in Ajax and one in Pickering. All the couples competing at the ball will be amateur and they won't receive any money, Ms. Brittain says. Club member Don Laister points out only professional dancers get paid for what they do, either through teaching or performing. Couples dancing at the Star Ball, or any other ballroom competition, usually compete together, Ms. Brittain says. "It's the only way to get routines and pat- tem.s right. It's like ice dancing in skating," she says. There are fewer Latin dancers in Ontario, Ms. Brittain notes. "I don't know why. We've often debated that." In Latin dancing, couples dance side-by-side or are separated, while in mod- em dancing, the partners usually face each other. Latin dancing is also more "energetic", Ms. Brittain says. In addition, couples dress differently for the two styles. In modem, the men wear tuxedos with tails while women are decked out in formal ball gowns. In Latin, the man wears casual attire, while the woman dons a shorter, form -fitting dress. Ms. Brittain says modern may be more popular because, as dancers get older, "they may only have time to practise five dances instead of 10. Couples tend to specialize. Most choose modern, but the How you can join younger couples tend to choose Latin." In Canada, ballroom DURHAM - Do you love to dance? AVYW-rbMb u Discover the 'Sanibel stoop' at Florida's Lee Island Coast By FRANK PHILLIPS Special Iis known as Florida's Florida, where Floridians go to vacation. It's also becoming popular with tourists from all around the world. Lee Island Coast gives visitors a feeling of an old Florida that no longer exists in many areas. Best known are Sanibel and Captiva Islands, connected to the mainland by a mile -long causeway *near Fort Myers, and to each other by a bridge at Blind Pass. For naturalists and lovers of wildlife, southwest Florida — including Lee Island Coast — boasts more than a million acres of nature sanctuaries. These refuges feature unspoiled wetlands where you can experience the beauty of the state in its natural condition. An abundance of wildlife thrives in its native setting. Located on the northern tip of Sanibel Island is the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, home to many exotic species of birds and plants. Named after Pulitzer Prize win- ning political cartoonist Jay Norwood Darling, the refuge fea- tures footpaths, winding canoe r] trails and a five -mile scenic drive through unspoiled mangrove, sea - grape, myrtle and palm trees. Rare and endangered species such as white pelicans, manatees and bald eagles are commonly seen. Alligators, falcons, ospreys, herons and loggerhead turtles all make their homes in the "Ding" Darling refuge. With a four -storey limit on con- struction, no fast-food outlets, and no stoplights, Sanibel Island offers visitors a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A popular feature on the island is its large network of bicycle paths. With more than 25 miles of inter- connecting paths, visitors can virtu- ally bike their way anywhere on the island. Sanibel, and the rest of Lee Island Coast, is famous for its shelling. Visitors are often over- come by what is known as the "Sanibel stoop," an affliction result- ing from walking on the beach, head down, staring about six inches in front of the toes. Shells are abun- dant in this area as they are washed up daily from the gulf. Other Lee Island Coast attrac- tions include: • Edison Winter Home — Lee Island Coast fact sheet Location: Southwest Florida's Gulf Coast, between Naples and Sarasota Geography: 652,000 acres, total land area; 590 miles of shoreline; 50 miles of white sand beaches; 100 plus barrier and coastal islartds/Gulf of Mexico. Cheeseburger in paradise Vacationers looking for a unique side trip while visiting the Lee island Coast of Florida should go to Cabbage Key, a quiet, secluded island where the order of the day is a c mcburger in paradise. Said to be the place where .Jimmy Buffet wrote the song "Cheeseburger in Paradise", Cabbage Key is located approxi- mately 20 miles north-west of Fort Myers, h is accessible only by boat clad is directly across from marker ,. 60 on the Intracoastal Waterway. The islands of Sanibel and Captiva are six to eight miles to the south. Whether going for the day or staying overnight at Cabbage Key -Inn — the island's only resort — • visitors can enjoy beautiful nature trails, outstanding fishing and sailing and a glimpse of "Old Florida". This tiny island sits on top of an ancient Cahtsa Indian shell mound. The Inn was originally built in 1938 by playwright and novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart. It has six guest morns, and is surrounded by several cottages. The history and tradition of Cabbage Key can be seen by the unique decor of the Inn's dining room and lounge — they are papered with autographed $1 bills. e .. This is a tradition said to be started by fishermen who would place a bill with their name on it on the wall before heading to sea. That way if they came home empty-handed, they still had enough for a cold brew. The tradition lives on as visitors continue to leave autographed $1 bills on the walls and ceilings of the hm. Owner Rob Wells says he never takes the bills down, but annually donates any that fall down to a wor- thy charity. He estimates that there's caurently about $32,000 wallpaper- ing the inn. Cabbage Key's marina is imra n - ably occupied by boats of all sizes and shapes. The island's dockmaster is from Toronto and came across Cabbage Key in 1979 quite by chance. -I was going to Jamaica and came here by accident and fell in love with it," says Terry Forgie- "I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. people vane from all over the world to see this place. D Artist's work asks women to look inwar By FRANCINE FORTIER MOHER DURHAM - The Pope. Breasts and buttocks. The Magician. Cleavage and curves. The Empress. Lace and loins. Welcome to Circus Vesta. With a visual punch, Pickering artist Linda Ward Selbie vividly dis- cusses the contemporary woman in this exhibition of photographs and collages. Circus Vesta continues at Oshawa's Robert McLaughlin Gallery until March 1. These images of women work in opposition to one another and the plucky Selbie has plucked some plumage to make her point. Straight from the pages of The Toronto Sun, collaged Sunshine Girls strut their stuff around a central photographic image. This may be the young girl in Boca Beauty, the maternal sunbather in Beach, or even something very twisted and very strange, as in Accessorize or Cow. It is up to the viewer to make the connections. Some people may find the images unsettling, but Selbie is prepared for this. "People are afraid to confront the truth because the truth is so pow- erful," she says. "What you see here you can see in broad daylight. I didn't go into the studio and con- struct fantasies. This is documen- tary -- When Selbie shoots she becomes totally absorbed by the activity she sees through the viewfinder. Something attracts her, she watches it through her camera and becomes oblivious to anything else. Later, in m, the darkroom arkrooshe will reflect on the work. "The kitchen has really become the heart of the home, very much like it was 100 years ago," says Dean Gaudet of Design Team Plus Ltd. "The kitchen is a much more multi-purpose room and is now a combination kitchen -breakfast - family room." The shift to the kitchen as a multi- purpose gathering room is a reflection of lifestyle changes, says Peter Giordano, also a senior designer with Design Team Plus Ltd., which is a member of the Greater Toronto Home Builders' Association. More women than ever are working so they want help and company in the kitchen during meal preparation. As well, husbands and children are coming into the kitchen to help themselves. To accommodate that lifestyle, consumers are renovating their kitche is to include multiple work stations, excellent overhead, valance and pot lighting and cabinetry which has a built- in mini -office area. The family's use of the kitchen as a gathering area has influenced materials of choice for cabinetry, say designers. The warm traditional look of wood is popular, though many are choosing to update the classic appeal of wood with a bleached oak or pickled maple door. The lifestyle of homeowners also demands that cabinets be as functional and efficient as possible. Pantries for foodstuffs, lazy susans to maximize corners, space for built-in appliances to free up needed counter space and use of odd -shaped or under-utilized spaces are r A F__.Rt :n 7Ue CoruwsM 'A' 2U1 sq. R. From $$223,990 now common. Consumer demand for function and versatility also extends to sinks. Although sinks are available in a variety of materials and colors, people are spending as much attention to the utility of sinks. People want double sinks and sometimes a bar sink to accommodate an extra set of hands. As well, people are conservation conscious, says Gaudet, and they are washing small amounts of dishes rather turning on the dishwasher. The choice in countertops is where sensibility meets creative high tech, say the designers. People are choosing from granites and Corion for their durability and look and have literally hundreds of choices of colors, designs and textures available in laminates. Attention to counters as work stations has lead to the continuing interest in islands. Another trend to watch, suggest In Courtice the designers, is the kitchen island which can be swung out for use and tucked away against the wall for occasions when the kitchen needs to be opened up. Flooring is also a place where consumers are exercising creativity. Ceramic is still a popular choice for its durability and appearance, but homeowners are also turning toward hardwood flooring. "Wood is a lot softer on your feet than ceramic and the look is quite dramatic, especially if it is put in on a diagonal is a rectangular room," says Giordano. "The random planking look (wood planks in varying widths) is also quite nice." Kitchen renovation is not only a good idea in terms of function and aesthetics, it is also beneficial in terms of a home's value, note the designers. Traditionally, the money invested in a kitchen renovation is always returned on resale. Mr 11 :Especially for you. The neighbourhood you've been looking for. The home you've been dreaming of. And, when it comes to landscaping especially a new home, the best advice is 'be prepared." Toronto Home Builders' Association member Alexander Budrevic, a leading landscape architect and president of his own landscaping firm, says new homes offer distinct advantages when it comes to planning your property's look. "Owning a new home enables you to design and implement your landscaping requirements to suit your particular lifestyle and taste," Budrevic says. "You don't have to cope with an existing garden that was designed for someone else." Budrevic suggests new home buyers negotiate a landscaping allowance with builders since features such as walks to both front and rear entrances and sod in both yards are often limited. Although a complete landscaping project may be financially impossible to undertake at one time, Budrevic recommends homeowners devise an entire plan to include patios, planting beds, shade There was a strong surge .n first-time buyer activity early In 1991 which subsided to more normal levels as the year progressed. A master plan means the finished product will be cohesive, he says. "Do the plan for your total property even if you can't afford to do everything at once," Budrevic says. "It is much more economical to spend extra time and effort in proper planning that to correct mistakes after the work and money is spent in your garden." Proper grading of the property is vital to landscaping projects, he says. To avoid wet basements and puddles in the lawn, all hard surfaces such as patios, driveways and walks should slope at least one per cent away from the building. Lawn areas and planting beds should slope two per cent away, he adds, and remember not to block or alter existing municipal drainage plans. For patio construction, a -12W 12' area should suffice for the placement of outdoor garden furniture, Budrevic says. As well, paving materials may consist of reinforced concrete, precast concrete slabs, interlocking stones, flagstones or similar hard surface supplies that complement existing building features. If possible, select a new home with a southern backyard so as to be exposed to more sun for the proper cultivation of grass, he says. And select planting material with future maintenance in mind, he adds. "Don't plant large flower beds or construct waterfalls, fountains or ponds if you can't properly maintain them or hire someone to look after them," Budrevic says.
