'Istat warning was issued by frustrated and angry taxpayers who gathered at St. Isaac Jogues Parish Hall Wednesday evening for a meeting of the local chapter of the Ontario Taxpayers Coalition. "Bureaucracies have an infinite appetite," challenged one woman. "We (taxpayers) have a finite amount of money. You have to control your appetite," she told municipal and provin- cial politicians and public and separate school board trustees. "We'll stop feeding you and you'll learn to control it." Still, at least one person was concerned about Pickering's 9.5 -per cent per annum penalty on overdue taxes. It was suggested res- idents bank their taxes and earn interest on the money. When one man pointed out "the number of people in this room is not enough" to start a tax revolt, a woman offered to begin collecting signatures "tomorrow morning." Public school board trustee Colleen Jordan told the crowd of almost 200 to "think before you withhold your taxes" because "you'd be hurting someone." Among the items challenged by meeting organizers was the public board's proposed $25.8 -million administration building. See TAXPAYERS... Mr. Polonsky wants the region to share the $70,000 cost of studying a proposal to offer expanded university courses here. The college and a private source would cover half the cost and the region the rest, Mr. Polonsky said. -= Regional council referred the request to 1992 budget deliberations. The college currently offers cours- es from Trent and York Universities and from Ryerson Polytechnical ntstitute. Mr. Polonsky said the partnership wit the three other institutions would be expanded to offer degrees. I'd be disappointed if it's not in place by September 1993," he said in an interview. About 50 students would be admit - led in the fust year. After 10 years, Mr. Polonsky is hoping for an enrolment 7W4,000 students. The teachers, all employed at Ecole Secondaire : atholique Charles Gamier in Whitby, received a 4S -per cent salary increase retroactive to Sept. 1, and a further one -per cent hike effective Feb. 1. The same salary grid was accepted by the board's 910 elementary school teachers in October and is being offered to 290 secondary teachers who are staging a work -to -rule campaign at the region's six Catholic high schools. The union representing the French teachers had wanted parity with pub - lir school counterparts, so it had been asking for an 8.42 -per cent raise — six per cent in the fust -half of a one-year contract, and an additional three per cent in the second half. `The agreement (with French high school teachers) was based on want- ing equality within the system," board chair Tom Oldman said after the agreement was reached, following failed mediation talks with English sec- ondary teachers. The agreement also recognizes the "difficulty with staffing a small school," says Grant Andrews, associate director in charge of business affairs. The school will now receive extra staffing to allow for sufficient course selection for students. Durham's separate board has 214 francophone high school students. Those who aren't have obviously been ignoring their employ- ers -- you, the voting and taxpaying public. Like the 4,000 or so people who showed up at the Metro East Trade Centre in Pickering Jan. 22 to hear and cheer Reform Party leader Preston Manning as he shared his vision of Canada's future. They cheered so loudly that local Progressive Conservative MP Rene Soetens could hear them in Winnipeg. He was on the phone to us the next day to criticize the Reformers and their leader. His attack "came as no surprise", in the words of a writer below, who's one of more than a half dozen people who've slammed Soetens in letters to the editor we've received in recent days. (None have sided with our representative in Ottawa.) "The fact of the matter is that the Tories, NDP and Liberals are running scared." All politicians should be, if they're listening to the electorate. Like the 200 or so who turned out to Wednesday's meeting of the Ontario Taxpayers Coalition in Pickering. They threatened to withhold their taxes this year if politi- cians don't take seriously their demands for low tax increases. Pickering council members might further reduce the municipal tax hike they plan to pass onto townsfolk by killing plans for a $3.5 -million ice rink there. And, Ajax politicians should consider whether their town can afford a new $100 - million community centre. Politicians at all levels had better pay heed to the public for their own good but, more importantly, for your own good. Reform To the editor, It came as no surprise to read in the Jan 26 issue of the News Advertiser, our Member of Parliament, Mr. Rene Soetens, criticizing the Reform Party. Following as it did on the heels of "Boss Brian's" announcement earlier in the week of his intention to expend great effort to debunk Reform Party policies, Mr. Soeterts remains the duti- ful lapdog he has been since assuming his seat. I would suggest to Mr. Soetens and his boss that this great effort would be better spent on attempts to solve the problems of Canada rather than those of the Conservative Party. The fact of the matter is that the Tories, NDP and Liberals are naming scared! They know that the Reform Party is offering averagc Canadiacs an alternative to the toady governments that are ruining our country at all lev- els. Blindly conforming to the "party - line", feathering one's own nest and laying the blame everywhere but at their own doorstep are the order of the day for those in office, rather than the wishes of constituents, demonstrating leadership and reqmsibilky (both 5s- ' cal and moral) and creating new, imio- lietters MIKE MW 65' -SA` GT14 E RAE GOVERNMEWS40ULD (:,:(JT SKNDING• &FQWA i I,M 4Y rrH• _ HIM! 4 Part read to 'protect' Canadian y Y vative ideas to deal with Canada's Britain, the intense focus on minorities Perhaps all of their proposals an woes. One issue that the Reform Party holds seems to particularly irritate the main three and that is multicultural- ism. As an unhyphenated Canadian (a rare species these days), I am sick and tired of the government pandering to the ravings of the very few, but very vocal, members of various minorities who are constantly whining and com- plaining. The overreaction of govern- ment to this nonsense results in the erosion of the traditional values of Canadian life. Canada offers these people one of the highest standards of living in the world. I consider it only common decency that upon arrival to this land they respect its traditions and heritage. The celebration of one's her- itage is to be encouraged, but it should be at no cost to the taxpayer. I want to live in Canada, not a replica of Vietnam, Pakistan, Jamaica or any other foreign country. We should con- tinue to welcome productive immi- grants from all over the globe, howev- er, they must be prepared to live as Canadians. Recently, Muslim leaders publicly encouraged their followers to openly defy British law if they thought it interfered with their religious beliefs. Unfortunately, Canada appears to be heading down the same crazy path as Britain and unless we begin to support the preser- vation of Canadian traditions, we will reap the harvest of ingrained racism that is rampant throughout Britain today. The Reform Party is the only party that wants to deal with this issue head on by taking a pro -active stand to protect the traditions of Canada while encouraging the rich fabric of ethnic cultures to express themselves. Yes, Mr. Soetens, you should be concerned about the Reform Party. d ideas won't be successful — but, have yours? I do not view them as a magi- cal panacea for all of our problems but they do propose to bring a sense of moral and fiscal responsibility to gov- ernment — now isn't that a fresh idea! In the past, I have voted Conservative, but no more. If a Reform Party candidate is not on my ballot, I will not vote. This concerns me greatly, for I feel that the three main parties offer the average Canadian no real choice and therefore true democracy is averted. Whether the government is Liberal, NDP or Conservative the middle class are bled to the bone to provide government with more money to solve problems that are never solved and then we are blamed for the failures. traditions There are thousands of ordinary Canadians that concur with this view- point, Mr. Soetens, and by the time the next election rolls around, there will be hundreds of thousands. You, your party and the other two continue underestimate the patience and inteW genre of the electorate — we will not be impressed or swayed by the usual handouts that usually appear just before an election. It's time for a dra- matic change in Canadian politics, that change is on the horizon — the Reform Party. Neville Howard Price, Ajax P.S. I am now now or have I ever been a member of any political party and probably never will be. I just see the Reform Party as the only true alternative. SharingReform Part 's 'dream' To the editor, In Linda White's recent article, Rene Soetens, Ontario Riding Progressive Conservative MP, stated that Reform Party leader Preston Manning is "saying things people want to hear". He's right. I attended the January meeting of the Reform Party at the Metro East Trade Centre and among the many things that I wanted to hear (and applauded for) was genuine repre- sentation in Ottawa — something that I thought I voted for, most cer- tainly paid for and yet have never truly received. Judging by the more than 4,000 other people who stood and applauded Mr. Manning, there ue an awful lot of others who feel the same way. By saying what I want to hear, Mr. Manning is demonstrating that the Reform Party is at least aware of my needs. How is it that a party that originat- ed thousands of miles away can address my concerns more acs mmly than my own elected representative? My advice to Mr. Soetens is that he should listen to the voters at let as much as Mr. Manning does. Una I heard of the Reform party, I con- sidered my dissatisfaction with the performance of politicians to be beyond my control. I now believe that perhaps this need not be so. Finally, Mr. Soetens also indicat- ed that what the Reform Party really stands for is just a dream. That may be true, but I share a part of that dream and Mr. Soetens ... shame on you for not knowing that. B. For the last five years she has been providing footcare services to seniors through the Oshawa Senior Citizens Centre. At the Centre, seniors come to her to take advantage of her service. While she continues to provide footcare service at the centre, her newly formed business, Pedicare, allows individuals to receive specialized foot care in their own home. Problem feet occur from a variety of causes. Karen sees patients who, due to arthritis, cannot bend, or find it difficult to manipulate their limbs. Other patients have poor vision, while still others - because of the thickness of their toenails and no proper equipment - are unable to cut their own nails. In most cases, the individuals do not want to ask family members to look after their feet. Although Pedicare was initially formed to meet the needs of senior citizens, Karen has found that mothers of very young children who find it hard to get out of the home for appointments are also responding to her service; as are professionals who are busy in the workforce and who appreciate the in-home service which saves them Special Rates to Airport "Go In Comfort and Privacy" from Pickering - 1400 Ajar 145" for up to 4-5 passengers 686-1515 in"I a about our out of town rates. v+ FAST -LINE ■ " THREADED PRODUCTS LTD. 91 Station St., Unk 46 Ajax, Ont. Karen will cut and file nails, remove corns and calluses, treat and remove thick skin under toenails, and gives foot massages. Diabetics, she explains, require special foot care. "The circulation in the foot becomes inhibited as people grow older. If they cut themselves, there is a high risk of gangrene." For that reason, older diabetics particularly need assistance to prevent other complications developing. In addition, she provides health teaching, refers clients to medical doctors, as needed, and will go into institutions, if requested. Although to date, there has been great response from Ajax and Pickering for Karen's service, Pedicare does cover Oshawa and Whitby as well. Statistics released recently by the real estate association show 47 per cent more homes were sold in 1991 than in the previous year. These statistics show that even during rough economic times, the residents of Durham Region still have faith in home ownership as one of the best investments they can make. "In 1991, there were 5,627 residential sales," says board president Mark Smith, "compared to only 3,837 the year before.,, The average price for homes sold by members of ODREB in 1991 was $153,119 compared to $165,375 for 1990. That is a decrease of 7.4 per cent. Bus. 8842377 852-7052 C21 Emerald Isle Real Estate "I feel that the reason for the drop in average price is that 43 per cent of the homes sold went for between $100,000 and $149,000, compared to 30 per cent in 1990," Smith says. He continues, "This shows that there is still high confidence for first-time homebuyers. As interest rates dropped, people who had been waiting to buy their first home were now able to and people wanting to sell their starter home and move up also now had that option. "We are encouraged by the federal government's proposed five per cent down payment plan, yet hope that they will consider the RRSP proposal from the Canadian Real Estate Association as another long-term initiative towards affordable housing for Canadians," Smith says. "Clayton Research Associates (one of Canada's leading housing economists) have predicted an upward trend in the number of home sales and prices over the next two years. Now is obviously the best time to buy a new property.— The Oshawa and District Real Estate Board is a trade association which represents about 1,000 realtors in Newcastle, Bowmanville, Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and Port Perry. Realtor is a registered certification mark which identifies real estate licensees who are members of ODREB and as such abide by a strict Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Practice.
