but it will also be able to continue to take advantage of the relative-
ly low rate it enjoys at the Brock West landfill — currently S38 a
tonne.
Negotiations are under way with Metro Toronto to keep that rate
unchanged for 1992, he adds.

January
• The names of most crime victims

• Youth violence and crime was
called a "sign of the times" and police
formed a street level crime unit to hit
the streets by April. Its purpose is to
combat crimes committed by adoles-
cents at the street level and, in panic a-
lar, by street gangs.
• Police want to be known for the
assistance they give to commuutities
and changed their name from Durham
Regional Police Force, adopted in
1974, to Durham Regional Police
Services,
February
• Crime in the region rose 11 S per
cent in 1990 over 1989, according to
statistics released by police. Among
the highest increases were break and
enters. Police chief Dave Edwards
calls the 51.7 -per cent clearance rate
of crimes "acceptable".
April
• A 23 -year-old Ajax woman was
found dead in her car in the Rouge
Valley. Patricia Lopez, or O'Dell Ct.,
died as a result of a gunshot to the
upper torso. Husband Edwin Or!:mdo
Lopez-Farfan, 25, was charged thret
months later with first-degree murder
and conspiracy to commit murder. He
has appeared in Scarborough Court for
a preliminary trial. Another man,
Maurizio Crupi, 19, of Weston, was
charged with conspiracy to commit
murder.
• Missing Pickering teen Julie
Stanton's family braced for the one-
year anniversary of their daughter's
disappearance. The 14-vear-old was
last seen leaving her Maury Cres.
home on Easter Monday, 1990.

to dominate the news here in 1991.
January
• War in the Persian Gulf sparks a
review of the region's nuclear emer-
gency plan. Pharmacies report a
demand for anti -radiation pills.
February
• A boating accident on Lake
Ontario claims the life of a Palmerston
man and sends three others to hospital.
A rescue earns Pickering firefighter
Mike Gamba a town civic award and a
provincial bravery award.
• A dozen residents' groups ask the
ministn of municipal affairs to inves-
tigate town council, but the ministry
later declines. The request prompts
mayor Wayne Arthurs to organize a
one -day workshop on town -resident
communications.
• Remarks made during a council
meeting prompt councillor Kip Van
Kempen to launch a lawsuit against
colleagues Doug Dickerson and
Maurice Brenner. The suit is eventual-
ly settled out of court, but taxpayers
are stuck with a S5.(W deductible on
the town's insurance poiicy.
March
• Pickering resident Ann Wendland
is one of 40 Canadians presented the
Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award of
Achievement, after she spent five
years fulfilling the requirements.
• A ceasefire called in the Persian
Gulf War brings relief to local families
whose sons are serving in the conflict.
April
• A report that council's public
relations budget is overspent prompts
politicians to argue about :apel pins,
Photo frames and letters to new moth-
ers. Council later decides in private
that the mayor should approve pubiic
relations expenses in future.

'Year to remember' for public school board
DURHAM - As the public school board struggled to find
ore dollars in 1991, past chair Ian Brown predicted the
ear would go down in history as "one to remember."
Still, the board kept its promise to keep taxes below the
double-digit level and came in with a 6.9 -per cent increase
over 1990. The decision was applauded by many, but criti-
cized by a few parents after a learn -to -swim program was
cut.
The following is a list of other events that marked the
year:
• High school teachers threatened a full-scale walkout
just weeks into the new year. A contract agreement, reached
at month's end with help from an outside mediator, gave
them a 7.06 -per cent salary increase in the first year of a
two-year deal.
• The impact of immigratiot; was felt by the board. By
March, it was providing special services to more than 700
English -as -a -Second -Language students, with about I I
newcomers arriving each month.
• The board expressed disappointment and frustration
after learning it would receive just $7.5 million from
Queen's Park to build new schools next year. It had asked
for $92.5 million in its capital expenditure forecast.
• Recycling continued to gain momentum at schools, and
students preached to their parents about the need to reduce
and reuse. In May, the board pledged to reduce the waste it
sends to landfill sites by at least half.
• Despite some debate, trustees voted themselves an
average 6.23 -per cent raise, effective following municipal
elections in November. They now cam $13,600 a year, up
from $12,800.
• Elementary teachers won a pay increase in June that
gave them parity with their high-school counterparts.
• Cadarackque Public School in Ajax opened its doors in
September.
• Municipal elections in November brought nine new
trustees to the 20 -member board. Pickering trustee Louise
Farr took over the reigns as chair, while Whitby trustee

DURHAM - The separate school
board faced numerous challenges this
past year, from setting an acceptable
tax increase to dealing with parents
frustrated by overcrowding at a num-
ber of area schools.
Other highlights of the year
• A promise to foster good race
relations, as seen at a public forum in
February. Schools followed suit with
independent projects throughout the
year-
• Frustrated parents expressed out-
rage that plans for a school slated in
Pickering's Altona Forest were post-
poned again. Though the board has
had a designated site in the forest
Cnce 1982 and received funding
approval in 1989. building plans
were put on hold gate last year when
town council asked the province to
comment on possib.c preservation of
the area. The board says it's looking
for an alternate site.
• Parents warned trustees they
were "fed up" with increasing taxes
at a public meeting in February. The
board later passed a budget that
called for a 6.9 -per cent tax increase
after cutting a number of programs,
including a Grades 7 and 8 industrial
arts and family studies program, and
a learn -to -swim program.
• Ajax trustee Salm Longo, a 13 -
year veteran of the board, announced
her resignation in Nlay because of her
decision to move out of the region.
• A request to determine why
French -as-a-fi rst- language teachers
were leaving the board in droves was
Swept under the rug by trustees in
June. The French Language section
saw a 40 -per cent turnover of
teachers in a two-year period.

municipal elections in November was
defeated in June by one vote.
• Elementary teachers won a 4.5 -
per cent raise in the first half of a
one-year contract and a further one -
per cent hike in the second half. The
agreement also gave them more time
to plan lessons.
• Board director Earl Lagroix
defended the need for a separate
school system at a public meeting in
October. He warned the system was
"coming under attack" by groups
who want unified boards, but said the
system is "economical."
• Whitby trustee Tom Oldman
was selected as this year's chair fol-
lowing municipal elections in
November. Past chair Catharine
Tunney didn't seek re-election.
Pickering trustee %lary Zecchino will
serve as the 1992 vice -chair. Eleven
new trustees joined the 19 -member
board.
• A French trustee from Oshawa
refused to swear allegiance to the
Queen at the board's inaugural meet-
ing. Though Kathy York made the
oath the following day in order to
meet regulations set out in the
Education Act, she will lobby the
ministry of education to allow
trustees to pledge allegiance to their
country.
• St. Patrick Catholic School in
Ajax opened its doors in December.
• High school teachers at the
board's six schools voted 62 per cent
in favor of strike action and have
threatened to stage a work -to -rule
campaign beginning Jan. 13 unless
an agreement is met. Salaries and
class size are among the outstanding
issues.

• The board asked the ministry of
education for S135.87 million next
year for new schools, additions and
alterations in its five-year capital
expenditure forecast. It'll find out
what it gets in the spring.
• A delay in its modified school
year project was announced because
of the need for a longer consultation
process.
• Trustees endorsed Ontario's par-
ticipation in Canada's first-ever
national school tests. The province
was criticized by some trustees when
it bowed out of the tests last year
because of cultural and curriculum
concerns.

• A nine-year-old Pickering boy
lost the sight in one eye after being
shot with a pellet gun. A 13 -year-old
was charged with numerous offences
in connection with -the shooting, and a
15 -year-old was charged with assault
with a weapon.
• Emergency help is now only three
digits away with the launch of the 911
emergency telephone service.
July
• New state-of-the-art mobile com-
puters were installed in police cruiser,
in an attempt to catch more bad guys.
The S1.3 -million system will speed up
some areas of policing.
• A former Ajax resident was fatal-
ly shot while attempting to rob a
Toronto bank. Patrick Joseph Clement
was described by former neighbors as
a "responsible", "normal family man'
August
• An early morning kidnapping of a
24 -year-old Ajax woman ended safely
in Brighton dust hours after a man
faced his way into her car in Ajax and
ordered her to drive eastbound along
Hwy. 401. Faye Luff was shaken by
the incident, but uninjured. Her abduc-
tor hasn't been found.
October
• A Pickering man was presumed
drowned following a boating tragedy
in Whitby harbor. The body of Jeffrey
Kindree, 39, was recovered almost
four weeks later. The father of one fell
overboard into Lake Ontario while
putting fenders over the side of the
boat in preparation for docking.
• A 62 -year-old converuence store
owner was wounded after refusing to
give money to an armed bandit. Peter
Kim, owner of Pete's Variety Store in
Ajax, underwent surgery to remove a
bullet from his arm.
• The victim of an execution -style
murder was found slumped over the
wheel of his car on the Pickering -
Uxbridge border. The body of Hang
Feige, 35, of Willowdale was found by
a passerby. The case is ursolved.
November
• The recession was partly to blame
for a soaring crime rate. police
announce. During the first nine months
of the year, crimes against people, such
as rape. and assault and robbery. rose
more than eight per cent over last year.
Crimes against property, including
arson, break-ins and shoplifting,
soared more than. 14 per xnt. Arson
increased aimost 80 per cent.

A New Year's
wish list
As we ring in 199?, the News Advertiser has put together a New
Year's wish list -- a list that many will agree could make this year
better than last.
Locally, we hope the newly -elected politicians fulfil their man-
dates to best serve their constituents and the community. Budget
restraints and a close watch on all spending is a must in these tough
economic times.
Plans for a new food bank in Ajax -Pickering are already under
way. its completion and support from local residents will ensure
that our neighbors in need are looked after.
A resolution to the Ajax lakefront issue and the location of the
water supply plant is long overdue. Let's hope it gets resolved to
everyone's satisfaction.
It is also hoped Bob Rae and the NDP government will reconsid-
er their proposed changes to the Labor Relations Act. Labor laws
rammed down the throats of businesses do not create an attractive
climate or inspire a lot of confidence in companies considering
moving to Ontario.
At a time when many companies are closing or relocating to
other provinces or the United States, the government must get the
business sector back on its side and get the economic wheel turning
once again. Keeping Ontario competitive is only common sense. If
Mr. Rae is looking to put a "Closed" or "Out of Business" sign on
the province, he's well on the way.
This would also be a good year to resolve the Sunday shopping
issue. As predicted. confusion set in last Sunday. Some Storrs were
open, some stores were closed. Even the police were confused --
some stores were charged, some were not. Let's either have year-
round Sunday shopping in all stores or none at all.
The New Year is a time of rebirth and brines with it renewed
hope and optimism. It's a time for reflection; a time to count our
blessings and aspire to better things tomorrow. Let's hope those: who
count and can make a difference take the time to reflect.

share their concerns about the
environment.
Dear editor,
My name is Debbi King and I'm
in Miss Gilmour's Grade 6 class at
Highbush Public School. Our class
is incubating eggs for a "duck"
unit and I am concerned about
"our" little duck's future. All the
wetlands are drying up. I think that
if everybody saves water, we
would make quite a difference. For
example: Only use the sprinkler
every four days; tuming the water
off to brush your teeth; taking
short showers.
If everyone did that I think that
our ducks and birds and fish could
live a happier life.
It's also that people are pollut-
ing the wetlands. That has to do
with everybody collecting garbage.
I think that everyone should get a
composter and use the recycling
program (the blue box) and use
cloth diapers. A lot of people
throw garbage directly into the
rivers and lakes. The recycling
program does a lot.
I'm also concerned about the
proposed two-week pickup for the
blue box program! My family recy-
cles a lot and I come from a family
of eight and so "apple juice" glass
containers need to go somewhere. I
deliver newspapers with my sister
and most of the time we have
extras. We have a whole garage
full of papers and slowly we need
to get rid of them. So really, I think
that it is necessary for the pickup
every week. 1 mean if you want to
save our earth, then why don't you
want the pickup to be every week:'
Please save our water for the
ducks, the fishes and us.

We are concerned about the
Altona Forest being taken down.
We know we can't stop the devel-
opers but they should at least leave
some trees up. In the future I hope
they don't take down the rest of the
forest. If the developers do, a lot of
people will be upset.

plant because of all the pollution it
makes in the environment. I really
care for the environment. If I could
invent something it would be to
make non-polluting vehicles. I
wish that someone could pat an
end to war. Thank you.

Dear editor,
1J c are very concerned about
the environment and our future.
Right now we are doing an envi-
ronmental unit.
We've been learning about th
environment and it makes us ma
concerned about anything else.
Last year we went down to
Petticoat Creek and saw Lake
Ontario from above.
It looked beautiful, but when
we went down to get a closer look,
it was, well, it looked really dis-
gusting. There were dead fish all
over the shore. It was sad to see all
these beautiful creatures dying just
because of our silly mistakes.
A few days ago we watched the
movie called "The Man Who
Planted Trees.." It was so amazing
how one human being could make
such a big difference to our world.
This man just kept on trying and
trying.
Imagine what we would accolf
plish if we all chipped in to help
our world.
For instance, not polluting,
recycling, not killing animals for
no need, not cutting down trees for
no need, and using both sides of
paper.
So remember, if not us, who?
And if not now, then when?

AJAX-PICKFRING - Last year was a
busy one on the sports front. And, a number
of area athletes excelled at the provincial,
national and international levels.
BOWLING
Pan Am Games: Ajax was represented
at the 1991 Pan American Games in August
as Ray Vervymck was a member of the
Canadian Bowling Team which took part.
Vervymck, 29, advanced to the medal
round after out -pointing 12 other bowlers in
the preliminary round, with an average score
of 210 over 12 games.
SAILING
Olympic trials: Pickering's Rod Davies
switched from his familiar Laser class to the
two-man Flying Dutchman craft for the
CORK Olympic trials in Kingston in
August
Davies and partner Bob Palter of
Willowdale finished in third place at the tri-
als. However, the pair must finish first in
order to compete in the 1992 Summer
,✓►Olympics in Barcelona. The next trial is in
Miami. Florida this month.
SQUASH
Canadian championships: Pickering
played host to the best junior squad players
in the country at the 1991 Packard Bell
Canadian National Junior Squash
Championships at the recreation complex
May 9 to 12. Nicole Carroll was Pickering's
top player, finishing second in the under -14
category.
BOXING
Hall of Farrier: Long-time Ajax Boxing
Club coach Don Ross was inducted into the
Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in the
builder category. Ross joined the club in
1970 and, in that time, turned out many
national contenders and provincial champs.
HIGH SCHOOL
Wrestling: Ajax High pinned down its
second straight LOSSA wrestling title. Ajax
topped the 15 participating schools.

Matt McLean grabbed top honors at the
Ontario High School Wrestling
Championships in Kitchener.
McLean captured the gold
medal in the 41 -kilogram divi-
sion, defeating Peter Demarte

Cambridge in the final.
Grappling in Cuba: AR
group of 16 wrestlers, includ- Man
ing nine from Harwood McLean
Secondary and Ajax High School, travelled
to Cuba in April. While they were there, the
wrestlers trained at the EIDE Sport Centre in
Matanzu and at the ESPA Sports School.
Football: After an undefeated season,
the Pickering High School Trojans senior
football team lou the big one — the LOSSA
championship — to the underdog Whitby
Henry Street Hawks 21-19 in November.
Cross country: Dunbarton High
School's Angie Graham, a
Grade 11 student, outran more
than 200 competitors to win
the gold medal at the Ontario , -
Federation of Schools Athletic
Association (OFSAA) Cross
Country Championships in the
junior girls' division. Graham Angiti
also captured the gold at the Graham
LOSSA and Durham -York championships in
that division.
Badminton: Pickering High was the
class of the LOSSA badminton champi-
onships at Ajax High in April. Pickering
claimed both the senior and junior team
titles. Pickenng High won the DYSSAA
championship.
Hockey: The Dunbarton Spartans cap-
tured the LOSSA title and dropped the
DYSSAA title in triple overtime to the
Markham Marauders 5-4.
Basitetball: The Dunbanon High junior
basketball team won the LOSSA title and

Track and field: After
running away with the team
championship at LOSSA in
May, Pickering High athletes continued their
winning at the DYSSAA meet at Oshawa's
Civic Fields. Pickering High athletes cap-
tured 18 gold medals, six silver and four
bronze. Pickering went on to capture the
provincial title, the school's first-ever, at
Sudbury's Lair ntian university.
Field lacrosse: Denis O'Connor was the
class of girls' field lacrosse, defeating
Whitby Henry Street 5-1 in the final in May.
Soccer: The Dunbarton High senior girls
won both the LOSSA and DYSSAA tales.
At DYSSAA in May. Dunbarton defeated
Oshawa McLaughlin 4-2 in the
final.
Golf: The Ajax High junior
golf team captured a fourth
straight championship at DYSSAA. the
team of Ian Large, Kevin Johnston, Al
Aronson and Greg Bates won the title in
Whitby in October.
GYMNASTICS
Ontario Games: Nikki Liphardt, 12,
captured the gold medal in artistic gymnas
ucs at the Ontario Winter Games in Baine in
March. A total of 42 gymnasts from across
Ontano took part.
Junior Champ: Rian Holmes of
Pickering emerged as the national high per-
formance junior champion at the Canadian
championships in Saskatoon in May. Holmes
also picked up a gold medal on beam.
HOCKEY
All -Ontario champs: The Ajax -Village
Dickson Printing 'AA' midget reps won the
provincial title, defeating Sarnia 6-2 in the
fifth and deciding game. Ajax defeated
Markham in the quarter -finals and Stoney
Creek in the semi-finals.
Volkswa
All -Ontario finalists: The Pickering
Hepcoe minor bantam 'AA' team dropped
the seventh and deciding game to Chatham
in the championship final.
Pickering defeated Stoney
Creek in the quarter -finals and
won over Wexford in the semi-
finals.
Swedes pay visit: A touring Swedish
bantam team from Alta, Sweden played a
number of area teams, including the
Pickering Toyotas major bantam 'AA' squad
last January. Pickering defeated its
Scandinavian visitors 4-2.
`AAA' hockey: Ajax/Village !Minor
Hockey joined forces with the Pickering
Hockey Association to provide 'AAA' hock-
ey this year. The teams compete in the
OMHA Easter league against squads from
Whitby, Quinte, Kingston, Oshawa, etc. The
teams are known as the Ajax-Pickenng
Raiders.
Ajax Axemen: It was quite an off-sea-
son for the Axemen. The team announced
this summer it was _
bolting from Central ��INIIEff�
Junior 'C' to the „ IE
Central Junior 'B'
Wester Division. The team started the new
league on a winning note, defeating the
Brampton Capitals 6-5 at the new ice pad at
the Ajax Community Centre Oct. 2.
Pickering Panthers: The club

son, with Paul Watters, a former Toronto
minor hockey coach, as the new coach.
RINGFTTE
Rebels silver medalists: The Ajax
Rebels finished as silver medalists at the
Ontario Women's Provincial Ringette
Championships, hosted by Ajax in April.
Ajax lost to defending champion Waterloo
8-7 in the final.

Durham Region Non -Profit Housing Corporation is looking for an
experienced residential superintendent for a 45 townhouse complex in
Uxbridge. The Superintendent must have high standards, excellent
maintenance, repair and public relations skills, and be prepared to live
on-site.
Compensation is competitive and provided on a contract basis. Duties
wil' commence mid-January 1992.
