PICKERING - Reports of confusion, flustered
polling officers and irregular procedures during the
Pickering municipal election will be heard by a
provincial court tomorrow.
A judge is expected to rule whether a recount will
be conducted on ballots cast in the Ward 1 regional
race, which saw Maurice Brenner defeat challenger
Ken Matheson by 174 votes. Mr. Matheson is seeking
the recount, saying he wants to satisfy himself the
results are accurate.
In affidavits filed at the Whitby courthouse, scruti-
neers for Mr. Matheson and mayoralty candidate Bob
Mitchell during the Nov. 12 election have sworn that,

love and peace
for New Year
To the editor,
Our whole world is on the brink
of destruction. Greed and hate are
trying to take over everywhere.
What can you and I do? One seems
so frustrated and helpless!
What we need in our world for
1992 is a wave of love, forgiveness
and peace to sweep through our
hearts, our homes our neighbor-
hoods, our country, our world!
Let us begin by making our
peace with our Creator (can any
person say they created them-
selves?) Provision has been made
for our forgiveness, accept it. Then
make peace with one's spouse:
young people with parents; parents
with children; with neighbors; with
fellow workers.
Let us send such a wave of love,
forgiveness and peace up into the
atmosphere, into our country, into
our world.
We would never be able to
dream what a powerful force that
would be to save our world from
destruction.
A concerned citizen,
Pickering

appreciates coverage
To the editor,
I am writing this to express the appreciation and fun the Ajax
Village Minor Peewee "A" team has had this year with the great cov-
erage the News Advertiser and Al Rivett has shown us this season.
The players, parents and coaches have not only had fun reading
about the team but the articles will surely make for some great scrap-
books to look back on in the future.
The coaching staff of Ray Jervis, Jim Sabourin, Jason Jervis and
Wayne Munro, the players Kevin Bedarf, Jason Fernandez, Robert
Jones, Greg Kitching, Trevor Munro. Adam Smith, Phil Monders,
John Crocker, Dwayne Hunte, Paul McPherson, Lee Hummell,
Harley Scott, Andrew Jervis, Craig Kidney, Erik Bradstock and the
parents would like to wish the News Advertiser and "Al" a very
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Appreciative parent,

Council pay increase questioned
To the editor,
I would like to ask, in these
times of 'belt tightening', why
our council deems it fit to vote
themselves an 4.1 per cent pay
increase. Most of us today are
having to settle for three per cent,
zero per cent or even pay cuts yet
our council does not feel it neces-
sary to use restraint. Not only are
they getting a raise but how come
we hear about it after the fact?
Most of us have to ask our
employers "please sir, can I have
some more?"
I realize that these councillors
may have expenses (though I
never see anything from my coun-
cil member coming through my
door) but most of these people are
not using this money as their
main income.
Would someone please tell me
why I will probably have to face a
4.5 per cent raise in my taxes,
tighten my belt in many ways
(I'm not getting a pay increase at
work) yet our voted members of
council can feather their nests?
(Or so it seems), all from our cof-
fers.
Kathleen Slater,
Ajax
Can we afford this council?
To the editor,
As we listened to their election
promises to keep taxes down and
freezing wages, we see our newly
elected council of only 15 days
vote themselves a 4.1 per cent
wage increase.
In these trying days of soaring
unemployment, this act shows a
disgraceful lack of leadership in

well received
To the editor,
Thanks very much for the great
article that was in the News
Advertiser on December 15. 1991.
We really appreciate the cover-
age that you have given to the high
performance program.
I have had two calls this morn-
ing from people who have students
that are interested in our program
for next year.
I'd like to give you future sw-
ries about the accomplishments of
our athletes.
Thanks again for your help and
I hope that you have a happy holi-
day season.

setting the benchmark for further
raises with union and non-union
staff in Ajax.
I hope the citizens of Ajax can
afford a three-year term with this
council. Obviously to meet their
election promise of a 3.9 per cent
tax increase (or is it now 4.5 per
cent as quoted by mayor Witty
recently), the only conclusion I can
see to accomplish this would be tht
erosion of our present services or a
larger tax increase.
For the ones on council who
voted for a bylaw guaranteeing a
wage increase, I hope they will be
thinking of the people standing in
the long welfare line.

t by recession
To the editor,
I know we're in a recession but this is ridiculous, just what do
you say to your lads as to why Santa didn't give out candy canes
this year? Perhaps he left them at the North Pole by accident, maybe
the reindeer ate them all or even Santa himself could have skipped
breakfast before his long journey to the Pickering mall and he had a
bad case of the munchies on the way.
Oh, I know he must have been robbed, there's a lot of that going
on lately. Let's just say with his tight budget this year he was unable
to replenish his stock. Hum Bug! I only Arnow that next year I'll be
taking my kids to find the Santa that we all know and love. I guess
he just wasn't hanging around good of Pickering this year.
