Separate school board
to examine costs of own
transportation system
DURHAM - A separate school board
trustee is wondering if the board could save
money on transportation and at the same time
bus more younger children to and from school.
Oshawa trustee Paul Woodcroft has asked
fellow board members to consider reducing
the size of non -transporting zones for students
in junior and senior kindergarten, and primary
grades. He is also suggesting that the non -
transporting zone be expanded for intermedi-
ate, junior and senior students.
"We have to look at controlling costs," Mr.
Woodcroft told the News Advertiser. -While
saying that, I think we should be able to make
exceptions in individual cases, as long as it
doesn't cost the board money."
Mr. Woodcroft says he is also -concerned
for the little children who are walking up to a
kilometre. I think some older kids might well
be able to walk distances greater than that."
Each school has its own non -transporting
zone, and that is the same for all elementary
students, regardless of their age, according to
superintendent of educational operations
Cleary Smith.
He believes Mr. Woodcroft's plan would be
"a whole lot more expensive" than the present
system. "The plan has a lot of implications,"
he says. "For instance, do trustees really want
to split families?"
Meanwhile, Whitby trustee Ed Finan has
asked the board to review the cost of under-
writing its own bus system to see if it's cheap-
er than current contracts.
"Would it be at all possible to operate our
own transportation system," he asked. "At one
time it was more expensive to operate our own
system. Now, perhaps, costs have changed."
It's projected that the board will spend
about S5.8 million in 1991 busing children to
school. That figure, according to Kathy
Pezzarello, supervisor of transportation, is
down more than 5250,000 from what the
board expected to pay.
Again, Mr. Smith doubts the feasibility of
the suggestion. "I am quite confident that the
cost of buying our own buses is more expen-
sive" than present contracts.
Both suggestions will be examined by the
board's property and transportation committee.

AJAX-PICKERING - A recent Christmas luncheon held by the Ajax -
Pickering Board of Trade raised $346 for the Salvation Army.
The funds were raised by raffling off prizes donated by Cardinal
Corrugated Containers, Unistrut Central Canada, Manpower Temporary
Services, Balsdon Computer Services, Pine Ridge Insurance, Jardine &
Associates and Galbraith Jewellers.
The Salvation Army currently operates the only food bank in the
community and offers a Christmas -assistance program to needy families.

Witty appointed head ofp olice board

Jim Witty may be the person to see.
Mr. Witty has been appointed the
chairman of the Durham Regional
Police Services Board, succeeding
former Whitby mayor Bob Attersley.
Mr. Attersley, who served as chair-
man from 1983 to 1991, didn't seek
re-election in the November munici-
pal election.
The board "prepares policy and
gives direction to the police service,
which is implemented by the senior
levels of management and then the
rest of the service," Mr. Witty says.
There is one vacancy on the five -
member board. Two of the five
members are appointed by the
region and three by the province.
Mr. Witty and regional chairman
Gary Herrema were appointed by
Durham regional council, while
Sarah McDonald and Allan McPhail
are provincial appointees.
The vacant position should be
filled by the province in the new
year, Mr. Witty says.
The appointments are for three
years, but Mr. Witty's term as chair-
man is for one year.
The big issue for the board will
be the budget, says Mr. Witty.
"There's not a lot of money
around, yet the demand for policing
increases everyday. The number of
incidents is increasing everyday," he
says.

the Young Offenders Act.
"I wonder if it's time for the
board to make comments about the
Young Offenders Act. There are sto-
ries in the paper and on TV that real
bother me. Maybe it's time for the
federal government to revisit the act.
It's causing problems that are unnec-
essary," he says.
"The incidents of violent crime
seem to be perpetrated by younger
and younger people all the time," he
adds.

PICKERING - Gymnasts with
the Pickering Aerials performed
well at the recent Metro East
provincial qualifier in Unionville.
Alanna Weston placed fifth in
the Tyro 'C' category against 13
other competitors. Weston finished
third on floor, fourth on vault, fifth
on beam and sixth on bars.
Kim Flaherty. also competing in
the tyro 'C' category finished in
ninth spot. She was third on vault,
fifth on floor, seventh on beam and
10th on bars.
In the Argo 'C' division, Kelly
Brown finished 14th in the com-
petitive division. Brown's best
results were sixth-place finishes on
bars and floor. Teammate
Katherine Newton finished 16th
overall. She was sixth on both the
vault and floor.
Meanwhile, seven members of
the club competed at the first
regional meet of the season at the
Champions Gymnastic Club earlier
this month.
Sarah Soetens was the top fin-
isher for the Aerials, placing sec-
ond overall in the Junior 'A' cate-
gory. Nicole Marchand was third
followed by Hayley Veldhoen who
was fourth. Lindsay Dalton was
first on vault and bars and finished
up in sixth position overall.
In the novice 'A' division,
Pickering's Erin Kerr was first on
floor and placed third overall.
Stephanie Felghmacher was sixth
overalland Kathleen Tidy was
eighth overall.
Pickering's Emma Wilkinson
was ninth in the novice 'B' divi-
sion with a first -place finish on

In addition, Pickering gymnasts
took part in a boys' provincial
qualifier at Wilfred Laurier
Collegiate in Scarborough this
month.
Pickering's Jay Whitely fin-
ished third in the novice 'A' cate-
gory. He was first on parallel bars,
second on rings and third on horse.
Scott Meacham was seventh
overall in the Tyro 'A' category. He
was fourth on the parallel bars,
fifth on the high bar and rings and
seventh on the horse.
Meanwhile, Allen Baker was
lith overall in the cadet division.
Baker's best event was the rings
with a second -place finish. Aaron
Wiltshire was 13th overall. His
best finish was eight on the floor
exercises.
David Baker was Pickering's
highest finisher in the Tyro 'B' cat-
egory, placing fifth overall -
Baker's top event was the vault in
which he finished fourth.
In the Argo 'A' category,
Pickering's Brett Covey was eighth
overall, Billy Donald was 10th
overall and Ty Iawata was 12th
overall.

recent league play
PICKERING - The Pickering Bobby Baun Hockey Club major ban-
tam 'A' rep hockey temp collected two more league wins recently.
Pickering had lick trouble notching a 6-2 victory over Whitby Dec.
18. Jason Boyer led the way with a pair of goals. Steve Clarlkin. Tim
Hooey and Eddie Hatcher all eoaon3uted a goal and an assist to the win-
ning cause. Eric Blackwood had one Baal, while Sean Pierson added two
assists. Chris Catile and Darren Goodwin had one assist each.
Next, in a Some against Uxbridge Dec. 16, Pickering came out on top
7-5.
Ryan Moore notched the haunck, followed by Boyer with a pair of
markers. Clarkin had a goal and an assists while Pierson had the other
marker. Blackwood, Hatcher and Holley all had three assists, while Brad
Shearer and Kevin O'Hanley had two helpers apiece.
Pickering captured a narrow 7-6 victory over Peterborough Dec. 15.
Boyer and Hatcher both contributed two goals and an assist, while
Clarkin and Shearer had a goal and two assists each. Ryan Vinson had
the other Pickering goal.
Blackwood counted two assist, with singles to O'Hanley and Moore.

AJAX - The Ajax Highland Trophies tween 'A' ringette team
played to a 6-6 tie with Oshawa in recent Central Ontario Ringette
Association action.
Ajax had to battle back from a three -goal deficit in
order to salvage the tie with Oshawa.
David McBride was the leading marksman for sy%e
Ajax with a two -goal effort. Carolyn Frizzle, Melissa
Taylor, Lisa DiMichele and Becky Anderson scored
one goal each.
Di Michelle led the way in the assists department
with two. McBride, Frizzle, Andersen, Jackie
Deschenes, Amber Kuciks, Leanne Cyncora and Tara
Standen all had one.

Christmas is a very special time of
year for me. One reason is that I see
very special things going on around
me. I teach Mathematics at Dunbarton
H.S., and run a drive for the needy in
our area. Our students are constantly
being asked to contribute to various
causes, but it always amazes me how
generously they give to this cause. They dig deep into their pockets and
raise thousands of dollars every year, as well as buying new toys, winter
clothes and food. Everyone is a little more cheerful during Santa Cause
week because they feel good about what they're doing.
But to me, that's only some evidence of the true meaning of Christmas. It
is what we were taught to do by the greatest teacher of all time. Jesus Christ
had a very humble beginning 2000 years ago, but he showed us how to get
back into a close relationship with God. God was not pleased with us, and
no matter what we tried to do to right the situation, it wasn't enough.
Because of what Jesus did here on earth, the relationship has been restored,
and I know that when my work on earth is done, I will spend eternity with
God because I believe Jesus is who he claims to be. That is the miracle of
Christmas; God reaching down to us to bring us back to Him by sending a
tiny baby to show us the way.

Imagine holding a party in honour of
a friend, who for the sake of others,
risked humiliation, suffering and loss
of respect. The guests arrive, they
laugh and they eat, but by the end of
the evening no one has thanked or
even acknowledged the honoured
guest. As sad as it may seem, this
story comes true every Christmas.
To me Christmas has always been a
time I look forward to. I love being with my family and friends: laughing,
eating, giving and receiving gifts. But, you know how disheartening it can
be to watch the lack of appreciation shown for a present that you've put so
much effort into.
That is how Jesus feels when we celebrate His birthday since we can
count on one hand the number of times we mention His name. Many of us
know His life story, how through His example we are taught how to live.
And how He died on the cross to pay for our sins that we might have eternal
life. Since accepting that gift, I've understood and enjoyed Christmas a great
deal more than I did before.
So I encourage you to enjoy the time of laughter, food, and gifts with
family and friends this Christmas. But, remember to say a special thank you
for the one you celebrate, the honoured guest of the party, Jests Christ.

Cbristmas is knowing Jean Christ in a deeply personal and intimate
way; it is having the Guist of Christmas living in your heart! And
ahhough it may sound strange. if you just lay this article down and
in your own wads ask Christ to become your Saviour. He will enter
your life and Christ will become real. The song has more to say, and
again it echoes what I feel:
"Now you may say you're happy that Christmas really swings.
It's party time and all the world forgets its woes and sings
But, oh. please let me tell you there's so much more than this.
for you re still missing something that can tum your life around.
That something is my Jesus and I tell you this because...

Crime Stoppers and the Durham
Regional Police need the public's CRIME
help in solving a robbery which
occurred in Oshawa on Nov. 14.
> At about 6:20 a.m., a cab driver
picked up a fare in front of Johnny's
Eatery at the Park and Marland Plaza.
The fare asked to go to Rideau Place
and when questioned further indicat-
d 100 Rideau, which is a townhouse
omplex north of the pick-up loca-
tion, off of Park Rd. N. 1i
When they arrived at 100 Rideau,
the suspect told the cab driver to go around to the back of the complex and
atop behind a white van. Afar stopping the cab and asking for his payment,
the suspect pulled a knife and held it to the victim's neck.
The suspect told the victim that he wouldn't get hurt and demanded all of
the money. The victim turned over his wallet, but the suspect wasn't happy
with the amount and started to push the knife into the victim's neck.
The victim, after struggling with the robber, was able to free himse If, roll
t,,: in of the vehicle and run for help to the nearest townhouse unit.
Police and ambular•oe personnel were called and the driver was taken to
hospital to undergo emergency surgery.
