The News Advertiser asked area residents if they thought harsher penalties should be put in plaCe to curb violence against women. Norma Crane says, "Definitely. They should be treat- ed the same way as the men treat them." Letters Electorate o e tor, Having both received congratu- lations and blame for the part I played in getting Mr. Van Kempen elected as Regional Councillor for Ward 2 Pickering in the recent municipal election may I offer the following observations on what I believe actually occurred and why. I of course, am referring solely to Pickering. Firstly let me point out that only 25 per cent of eligible voters exer- cised their right to vote. This was extremely low even for local gov- ernment and was indicative of the distrust, disillusionment and dis- gust they had lived under for the past three years. To explain these statements one Gail Boutilier says, "Yes. Because I don't think the laws and the penalties for these crimes are strict enough." say sure. Our laws need to be tougher. The jail sentences are a bit too lenient." Because it's time all violence stopped. If there were stiffer penalties, maybe people would think before they did things." living in disillusionment and disgust has only to look back over that period of major and unusual occur- rences. Overspending of budgets by some councillors, an unprece- dented number of letters written to the minister of municipal govern- ment, complaining of some coun- cillors' behavior and lack of lead- ership, and accountability. This, while not instigating direct action, had a bearing on the decision of the provincial govern- ment to overhaul the municipal act and make councillors and other elected persons more accountable to the municipal government for their actions, but unfortunately the result and reply from the minister contributed to the public's discon- tent and feelings that elected per - Looking for a home for affectionate feline To the editor, I would first like to thank you for your advertisement in the Found column. Unfortunately, even though I did receive calls I did not find Frankie's owner. In the event that he maybe has an owner who is still looking for him, I decided to write this letter. Frankie, (not his real name), has been in my area since last sum- mer, ( White's road south and Downlands). When September came, he stayed around my place. As there are two cats in the family, I would like to find Frankie's owner or give him to someone who will appre- ciate him. Frankie's description is male, black and white, face half black and white, white paws and chest, with the white going up around his neck. He is a large cat, with short hair, his disposition is great, so I am assuming he came from a family with children. He's also very affectionate and will eat any kind of cat food. Please, if you love cats and can give Frankie the home he deserves give me a call - 420-2332. M. Fortunately not all accepted this, and the upset victory by Mr. Kip Van Kempen well illustrated that the people will, if they under- stand that they can have the power to remove offending representa- tives. The anger and disillusionment of the voters regarding the now famous law suit against Brenner and Dickerson for slander, was well illustrated in Ward 2, and in Ward 1 where a recount occurred. It is my sincere hope that this show of anger by electorates will prove a timely lesson to the new counc i I . It is hoped they will realize that no longer will they be unaccount- able for their actions, that they will realize that the public demand integrity, honesty and accountabili- ty. Perhaps a good place to begin should be the election of a hydrI board of directors. At present they are appointed by political patron- age to handle an extremely high budget and are only responsible to Pickering Council, who appoints them. Alex Robertson, Pickering Canadian Cancer Society thanks local residents after successful campaign] To the editor, On behalf of the South Durham Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, I would like to thank the residents of Ajax, Pickering, Whitby and our north- ern communities for their sup- port and commitment to the soci- etv. Thanks to their generosity and our team of over 2,300 dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, we reached our goal of $250,000. For the more than 300 patients we help each year, this means that we can provide them with transportation each day to their treatments in downtown Toronto, an emotional support group which meets the last Monday of the month at the cricket club in Ajax (space donated by the Cricket Club members) and financial assistance when appro- priate for homemaking services, specific drugs, dressings, food supplements, prostheses, home care child support, medical sup- plies and equipment. The society also provides educational print and video materials for the general public and for schools to promote early detection and prevention as well as presentations on tobacco awareness, healthy food guide- lines and sun -sense. In addition, over half the money raised goes directly to research. Many thanks to Joe Dickson, Dickson's Printing, our corporate co-chair for Ajax/Pickering, and the following companies and ser- vice clubs who donate money to our campaign: Guaranty Trust, Nelson Fabricating, Lawrcon Electric & Machining Corp., B.W.K. To the captains, canvassers and all those who help out but are too numerous to mention and to those who have donated prizes and services throughout the year for special events, I offer my heartfelt thanks.
