At a regular meeting last Monday, Durham Board of Education trustees approved an ethno- cultural policy which outlines regulations, proce- dures for dealing with racial/ethnic incidents, and an appeal process. "We are certainly aware of the changing com- munities in Durham, and this policy is highly reflective of those changes," says board vice -chair and Pickering trustee Louise Farr. "I'm not as interested in its enforcement guide- lines as its pro -active role in promoting harmony," she says. In the document, the board promises to pro- mote racial harmony among students, staff and the 0is community it serves and to continue to develop programs that encourage positive attitudes toward racial diversity and cultural heritage. All staff and students are to be made aware of the policy and will be given the chance to discuss its intent on an ongoing basis. Move... afoot to re -open food bank FROM PAGE 1 location and vehicle, the hiring of a full-time coordinator and funding. Guidelines under which the new food bank would operate also have to be worked out. The former food bank, operating out of Dun barton -Fairport United Church, was forced to close for a number of reasons, as outlined by former secretary Jane Stone. "I can't really pinpoint one prob- lem; there was just so many," said Ms. Stone. She said that, when the food bank closed, it was struggling to cope with 100 needy families a week and a lack of volunteers and food. The food bank's part-time coordinator "could not begin to handle the problems," she added. It was generally agreed that, if a new food bank opens, it should oper- ate cooperatively with the Salvation Army's food bank. Those attending the meeting also heard there may be some funding available from the United Way. In volunteering her agency to coordinate a food bank task force, Joan Skelton of the Social Development Council stressed that the broader issue of the growing number of needy people in the com- munity also needs to be addressed. Employees working at communi- ty centres, parks maintenance peo- ple, custodial staff, and equipment operators would be affected. They are members of the Canadian Union of Pablic Employees (CUPS). Thirty department staffers are trying to get their first contract with the town. They were certified by the Wrovincial labor relations board on March 14 of this year and would join inside and outside workers with the town's public works department in CUPS Local 54. The union and the town will meet Tuesday with a mediator appointed by the provincial ministry of labor. CUPS spokesman Jim Woodward says any strike action would be up to the union member- ship if the talks with the mediator fail. Town human resources director etichard Parisotto wouldn't say if recreational facilities would be open or closed if the workers strike. "I don't want to try to second guess what the town or union would do. 1 don't want to jeopardize the mediation process," Mr. Parisotto says. "We want to go into mediation to get a settlement." On July 22, the 30 members voted 96 per cent in favor of a strike to back up their contract demands. Mr. Woodward says issues nclude wages and non -monetary matters, such as the inclusion of a union security clause. Negotiations began shortly after the union was certified. "Negotiations so far have been going fairly well, up to the concilia- tion stage," Mr. Woodward says. When the parties went into con- ciliation, "we couldn't get anywhere there. We asked for a no -board report and 16 days after that we're in a legal position to take job action." The no -board report was issued on Oct. 21, so the workers could strike as early as Wednesday. Wayne Lott, president of Local 54, says the workers are seeking a two-year deal with annual wage increases of five per cent. CUPE Local 54 members make between S15.56 and $22 an hour, while the parks and recreation work- ers are paid 514 or less an hour, Mr. Lott says. Reader annoyed by special interest groups To the editor, As the municipal election approaches fast we are once again presented with the opportunity to exercise a fundamental right of a free and democratic society: The Right to Vote, 1 have two pet peeves that sur- face at election time. One is for the individual who can't be bothered to spend a few minutes to cast a vote and yet have plenty to complain about when council sets its agenda for a new term in office. My second is for the clutter of special interest groups who surface at election time and attempt to sub- vert the democratic process by pro- moting their own agenda through support for certain candidates. I have three favorites for the 1991 campaign season: Grassroots for Good Government, Coalition of Pickering, and the Pickering Rural Association. Grassroots for Good Government is a recent incarnation and I am troubled by the fact that most of their small membership were key players for the NDP and Jim (where have you been for the last year) Wiseman in the last provincial campaign. John Marks, Claremont Leave religion to the churches To the editor, In response to front page article quoting Dr. Earl Lagroix of the Durham R.C. Separate School Board, I would like to state that I do not believe quote "religion should be integrated into the entire syllabus and life of the school." Not any reli- gion. Not Jewish, not Protestant, not Muslims and not Roman Catholics nor all the rest. For many reasons; the first being that the principle of Separate Schools practices discrimination of the worst sort. Goodness knows where they got their authority to put themselves in this position — my copy of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms does not appear to cover nor condone two separate school boards and all that this entails. It would appear it was just "allowed to happen." This discrimination causes hatred and hard feelings in much of the Western world, and this has gone on for many, many years. Just look around. My research shows that France, as an example of an almost totally Roman Catholic country, had so much trouble with its priests harass- ing non-Catholics that they passed laws in 1905 to separate the church- es from the state. Public schools since then are "neutral in matters of religion, psychology and politics." Parochial schools run by the church runs 20 per cent of the elementary and secondary — mostly in rural France — only five per cent in the cities. After De Gaul in 1958 more government help was given to R.C. schools but only to the non -religious pan of the curriculum. For many, many years in Toronto Jewish children have attended public schools but took their religious train- ing on Saturdays at the Cheder. They did not lose their religion nor their culture. Secondly of course there is the ridiculous duplication of staff, facili- ties, buildings and maintenance, pro - grams for the children, which mu all add up to one awesome amour, of money needlessly spent, just for the sake of the Roman Catholics. This money could do wonders towards upgrading programs and equipment which has been "pared to the bone" because of lack of funds. Now, of course they have their say at the secondary school level which, in rural areas, necessitates bussing — as well as in the cities. Why can't the schools teach aca- demic subjects as they were set up t do, and let all churches teach the* religions on their own time? Agnes Williams, Pickering Firefighters say thanks To the editor, During the weekend of September 13, 14 and 15, Pickering Firefighters collected money at various locations throughout the town in aid of Muscular Dystrophy and their Leann Not to Burn program. With the help of food donations from McDonald's, Swiss Chalet and Tim Hortons, and the generosity of the citizens of the Town of Pickering, Pickering Firefighters raised a total of $30,711.30. This amount represents the highest dollar figure that the firefighters have raised in the 15 -year history of our "voluntary toll" campaign. Two- thirds of this amount will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada. "Thanks Pickering for a job well done." If it's cluttered with lots of reminder notes stuck every- where, you probably haven't got your priorities straight. And that means the time thieves are stealing from you. Recognizing the time thieves and arresting them was the topic of the Ajax - Pickering Board of Trade lunch Tuesday. Guest speaker John Collins, a senior consultant with T.A. McNaught Marketers, Priority Management Systems, offered some tips for making the most of your time at work. • Cluttered desk — Clean your desk and "you're halfway home," advises Mr. Collins. Set up a "holding" file with four folders, labelled 'reading', 'projects', 'miscellaneous' and 'mail'. Sort your papers into categories — garbage, filing, an 'A' pile for top priorities and a 'B' file for things that can wait or be delegated. - Drop-in visitors — Ask what they want before agreeing to see them, says Mr. Collins. He suggests setting up a one-hour peri- od during the day when you can invite people to bring you important con- cerns. "You'll be able to save a lot of little interrup- tions." • Telephone — Screening calls means not who's on the other end, but how important the call is, says Mr. Collins. You can set up an appointment schedule for telephone calls, he says, by giving people a time when they can reach you. "It saves a lot of tag games." - Ineffective delegation — Most people delegate to get more done, and that's a poor reason to do it, says Mr. Collins. Good reasons include expertise, training and motivation. The proper way to delegate is to put your request in writing and follow-up on your request at deadline time. "Don't hover" over the person while they're carrying out the task, he adds. • Meetings — Twenty- nine per cent of meeting time is wasted, due to poor agendas, lack of control and too many people in attendance. Limit your meetings to as few as pos- sible, covering as many topics as possible. Plan your meetings in great detail and limit attendance to those who really have something to contribute. v AJAX - Summer may be long gone, but for one Ajax teen, its memories won't soon fade. Get results! LOSE WEIGHT! An Amazing Discovery: Negative Calories Now you can lose weight easily, even if you eat a little too much... NY utritionists have discovered that cer- tain foods cause you to lose weight. These are foods with negative calories. The more you eat, the more weight you lose. In a report that you can receive with- out obligation, you will discover what these foods are, why they cause you to lose weight, and how. QUESTION: How can terrain foods cause you to lose weight? ANSWER: Experiments have shown Val 17 particularly healthful and nutri- tious foods (some of which are veg- etables and fruits) burn more calories than they contribute So the more you eat, the more you burn off your excess weight. These foods (with negative calories) are transformed into energy, not fat. C" How is this possible? A The power of negative calorie foods :o dissolve excess fat will seem obvi- S to you when you understand how your body accumulates fat. You are born with a certain number of "adipose" cells. These adipose cells swell up and multiply when you take on too much weight. As soon as your metabolism slows down, this allows carbohydrate -based foods to be chang- ed into fat. This fat is stored. Therefore, you cannot lose weight by draiping the fat from the cells. You can only do this in three ways: omit foods that are rich in fat (dieting), intensive exercising, or eating foods with negative calories that burn off the fat and drain it from you cells. Obviously, it is the last method that is far and away the easiest because it requires no effort, no deprivation. 0: Ho many pounds can you lose per week? A: If you are more than 20 pounds overweight, you lose an average of five to six pounds in the first week, and three to four pounds in subsequent weeks. If you are more than 20 pounds overweight, you will lose weight even more quickly. Some people with more than 40 pounds to lose have lost up to 12 pounds in the first week. Q: Do you have to follow some kind of special diet? Or is it just a question of adding negative calorie foods to your normal diet? A: You don't have to follow any diet, or change anything in your fdestyle. You can eat pastries, sauces, butter, cake, anything you want. The only thing you have to do is add negative calorie foods to your normal diet... and watch your pounds and rolls of fat disappear, 0: How many negative calorie foods do I have to add to my normal diet? A: Just add 256 of your normal diet. But you can exceed that amount because the more negative calorie foods you eat, the more quickly you lose weight. 0: Instead of adding these negative calorie foods, can I just ref lace 25% o1 my normal diet with them? A: Yes, because that is not really impor- tant. The only thing that is important is to absorb at least 25% negative calorie foods because these are the ones that burn off the excess fat and cause you to lose weight 0 Will it be easy for me to maintain my ideal weight after losing my excess pounds? A: Most people who lose weight with diets of pills or other methol's quickly gain back the weight they have lost. But with negative calorie foods, it is different The oniy thing you have to do to keep slim is to add negative calo- rie foods to your normal diet. 0: What are these negative calorie foods? Where can you get tnPm'2 A All these negative calorie foods are natural foods. There are 17 of them Among them are fruits. vegetables and other natural foods that you will find in any supermark,t or at your grocer 0Is there any proof that people have tried negative calorie foods and have really lost weight? A Everyone who has added negative calorie foods to their normal diet has lost weight. Here are some excerpts from letter we have received. "I had tried everything..." "I have lost 35 pounds. All my life I have suffered from being fat and I had tried everything to lose weight. The negative calorie foods are the only thing that have ever worked for me. I feel like a new woman. My husband also lost 23 pounds. We are delighted to have rediscovered the joy of life that we had long since lost." Mrs. Claudine S. "My excess weight melted away..." "In three weeks. I lost 19 pounds of excess weight. Since then I have not regained that fat. Because I had already tried so many methods and medications to lose weight, I no longer believed in any of them. But I tried this anyway. Thank heaven! Maybe my experience can be of help to other peo- ple." Miss Francine P. "I thought I would be fat all my life..." "I often dreamed of becoming slim, but nothing I ever tried ever helped me lose weight. Now I have discovered negative calories. I lost 23 pounds in two short weeks and a total of 68 pounds more quickly than I would have dared to hope. My husband told me last night that I am prettier than I ever have been." Mrs. Martha S. 0: 1 have read in a magazine that nega- tive calorie foods not only help lose weight, but also improve your health. Is that true? A: Yes. Negative calorie foods were discovered by nutritionist physicians during their search for healthier foods. When you add negative calorie foods to your normal diet, you lose weight but you also lower and normalize your cholesterol rate. This always con- tributes to your health 0 1 have already tried bean pod cap- sules, pineappie capsules, other meth- ods. other diets. and nothing helped me lose weight. Why would it be dif- ferent this time? A: Because the process of negative caiones is natural you burn off more calories than you absorb. Because everyone who has tried them has lost weight, there is no reason that it would work 'nr everyone else and not for you. The results are so certain that you can try this at our risk. and with no obligation.
