Queen's Park earlier directed Durham to build a transfer station and truck its garbage to Keele Valley in York region while it's waiting for the gyp- When the price tag for that ttransfer station carne in last month at close to $50 million, however, regional coun- cil hit the roof. The alternative put forward by the Durham contingent at the meeting with Ms. Grier was to extend the life of Pickering's Brock West dump (which is owned by Metro Toronto) as long as possible, and then to use a Metro Toronto transfer station, likely the one in Scarborough. This cost-saving alternative, says Mr. Aker, will require "the co-opera- tion of Durham region, Metro Toronto and the ministry of environment". To the editor, The Social Development Council of Ajax -Pickering is dedi- cated to identifying communitry needs and initiating or advocating for services to meet those needs. In 1991 a Community Needs Profile was prepared by the Social Development Council in consulta- tion with a wide network of com- munity groups, social service agencies and government. In this "Profile", poverty relief, the need for low cost rental housing, youth concerns, multicultural services and transportation emerged as some of the priority issues facing Ajax and Pickering. The Board of Directors of the SDC has prepared questions on these issues to which we have asked the candidates for mayor, local and regional councils in the two communities to respond. Housing: With close to 300 Ajax and Pickering families, seniors and singles on the Regional Housing Authority's waiting list for subsidized housing in the two communities and hundreds of other low and moderate income people on waiting lists at non -profits and co-ops, as a municipal councillor, what do you feel you could do to encourage more low-cost rental housing and discourage the "not in my back yard" reaction to non- profit proposals and other forms of rental housing? Poverty: In your view, what are the key factors contributing to the levels of poverty that exist in the Ajax -Pickering area; and what mechanisms would you put in place to deal with these issues? Transportation: With no connec- tion between local Ajax and Pickering public transit systems and minimal co-ordination between GO bus and the local tran- sit, many residents of Ajax and Pickering have difficulty accessing needed social services offered in one or the other of the communi- ties if they don't have a vehicle. Taking up to three different transit services to get somewhere in Ajax or Pickering from the sister munic- ipality is inconvenient, time-con- suming and expensive. As a municipal councillor, what will you do to help alleviate this situa- tion? Youth Concerns: What priority will be given to youth concerns on your agenda and what commitment will you make to work with those involved with the Barbara Black Centre for Youth Resources to tackle the growing concerns of teens in Ajax and Pickering? Region taxes have increased 48.5 per can or an average of 16.1 per cent per year - Public School Elementary taxes have increased 37.9 per cent or an -overage of 12.6 per cent per year, Public School Elementary taxes have increased 24.3 per cera or an average of 8.1 per cent per year. Separate School Secondary taxes have increased 55.0 per cent or an average of 183 per cent per year. These tax increases are over just a three-year period. I keep asking myself. why do we need two distinct education systems when the only difference between the two appears to be religion? What is wrong with the premise that the school system is there to teach the 3 R's — reading, writing and arithmetic. The religious teach- ings should be left up the churches, after all isn't that their function? Mr. Lagroix suggests that the school system must now deal with an increasing number of students who are not attending church on a regular basis. Excuse me, but shouldn't it be the church who is dealing with this issue! Mr. Lagroix suggests that par- ents take an interest in the upcom- ing municipal election. I couldn't agree with him more. Let's all take a very close look at what this double education system is doing to us financially. and ask ourselves if we can afford to con- tinue to pay 13 per cent increases in oar ProPUty taxes year after year after year. Ajax council on Monday approved a $5,000 budget, for the period Oct. 7 to Dec. 31. The major expense will be $3,500 for advertis- ing and promotion. The executive includes chairman enis Ardagh, and board members William McEachnie, Warren Hurren, Gord Seto, Jean Kedrin and Greg Hines. Pat Clark, the regional councillor for Wards 1 and 2, was named coun- cil's representative on the BIA until Nov. 30. When the new council is sworn in on Dec. 2, a new council rep will be named. A new BIA executive will be elected in December. Mr. Ardagh says the executive will meet with the members of the 4PIA in December to discuss plans for the area. The Village BIA covers all of Old Kingston Road, Church Street South from Highway 2 to the Randall Drive/Lincoln Street inter- section, and Kingston Road from the Pickering border to George Jones Street. There are between 100 and 130 members in the organization, Mr. Ardagh says. The town is conduct- ing a count to determine the exact number, he adds. Don Thorne had been the "driv- ing force" in getting a BIA for the Village, Mr. Ardagh says. However, Mr. Thorne, in a decision that was his own, isn't involved with the organization anymore. Until the end of the year, the aim of the BIA is to "develop credibility amongst the membership," says Mr. Ardagh. "We don't have anything planned yet. We want the consensus of the merchants. We don't want to do any- thing without their approval," he says. The remaining $1,500 in the BIA budget will be used for insurance, administrative and miscellaneous expenses. The Geo Tracker's refinements for the 1992 model year include an automatic transmission for the 2WD convertible model, cupholders, a new instrument panel design, new seat fabrics with color -keyed inserts, cloth bolsters, a new gray interior color and an optional tilt steering wheel. The Tracker was introduced in 1898 as part of the special purpose vehicle class. Young, single people appreciate Tracker's youthful and rugged styling at an affordable price plus its quality and reliability. Multi - vehicle households and young professionals appreciate the durability and fuel economy of the Tracker with its LSi refinements. The Tracker lineup consists of a new 2WD convertible, a 4WD convertible and a 4WD hardtop. An LSi appearance package is optional on the 4WD models. The Tracker's powerplant is a 1.6 -litre, L4, SOHC engine with electronic fuel injection. A five -speed manual transmission is standard on all Tracker models, with a three -speed automatic available as an option. Automatic locking hubs on the LSi models allow for easy shifts in and out of four-wheel drive from inside the vehicle. The front suspension for all models is MacPherson strut with separate coil spring. The rear suspension is rigid axle with lower trailing arm.
