That's because one of the aims of an alternate school year calendar is to increase student population, thereby eliminating the need for rtables. But that's just one consideration that will be taken into account as the public school board moves ahead with a pilot project that will involve two area schools introducing an alternate school year next September. Other criteria that make a school a likely candidate for the project include: - New schools corder construc- tion: Because schools now being built could introduce a modified cal- 40idar upon opening, there would be less disruption to staff and students. - Schools with a large walking population: Schools which require fewer buses would pose fewer logis- tical problems to staff. - Urban and rural community: Schools to be considered should be made up of both urban and rural communities. The Salvation Army's Family Services Centre on Station Street in Ajax gives out gro- ceries to 100 needy families a month, says Lieutenant Tim Beadle. That's double the number of families needing help last year. "We're able to cope," says Lt. Beadle. "We never turn anyone away." The Ajax -Pickering food bank, which operated out of Dunbarton-Fairport United Church in Pickering, closed its doors in August, citing food shortages and staff "burnout". A meeting is planned at the Ajax Community Centre Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss whether the food bank can be re -opened. A to house handicapped PICIKERRING - A six -storey apartment building that will house developmentally -handicapped residents is likely to be approved at Highway 2 and Rougemount Drive. The proposed building is a project of Rougemount Co - Operative Homes, which formed after parents associated with the Ajax -Pickering -Whitby Association For Community Living began to investigate how their children could live independently within the community. The group has enlisted Lantana Non -Profit Homes as consultants. During a meeting of Pickering council's executive com- mittee Monday, Rougemount Co -Operative Homes chair- man Helen Dionne said that, despite objections from neigh- boring residents, the location is ideal for the project. About 10 to 12 per cent of the 105 apartment units will be rented to the developmentally -handicapped, who will benefit from nearby shopping facilities and good transporta- tion routes, said Mrs. Dionne. During an earlier meeting, cotrncillors were told that the handicapped residents in the building would receive assistance and support from their neighbors. Politicians heard from a number of residents who com- plained about the density of the project. "Ihe units are far too great for this site," said Katherine Murray of the Rougemount Ratepayers' Association. "One - point -three acres can't support 105 units." Other concerns cited included the height of the building, increased traffic, impact on the nearby Petticoat Creek val- ley and overcrowded schools. But Keith Powell, executive director of Association For Community Living said it's important for the handicapped to be integrated into the community. " 1he worst thing that can be done is to warehouse or institutionalize them," he said. Council's executive committee approved the project, with council to consider it next Monday. Grey Nuns honored DURHAM - The group of nuns who helped establish Denis O'Connor Catholic High School were honored by the separate school board with an award of merit at a recent regular board meeting. The Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, also known as the Grey Nuns, were recognized for their contri- bution to the school community. The group was invited to teach and administer St. John the Evangelist Catholic School in Whitby in 1959. It later gave its support to DO'C, which has since relocated from Whitby to Ajax. While many Sisters taught and worked at the schools, they received little or no pay for their services. The Order gave an annual donation of $15,000 to the school's operating expenses, and often provided bursaries to families unable to afford tuition fees or school uniforms. The first principals at DO'C — Sisters Anna Claire, Mildred Moyle and Mary Goulet — also provided leadership to keep the school going. The group's foundress. Marguerite d'Youville, was canonized this year. Among those presented a scroll was award nominee James Foy, a teacher at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering. Also recognized was Pickering resident Fran Pereira for her role in promoting the Federation of Catholic Parent Teachers' Association. Year-round schooling considered FROM PAGE 1 pupils: Most schools with special education, handicapped and French immersion students require busing., Again, fewer buses mean fewer logistical concerns. Staff began studying the modi- fied school year almost three years ago. Students would receive the same number of instructional days as they do now, but the traditional two-month summer break would be broken into different components, such as two one-month breaks or three three-week breaks. It's estimated that year-round schooling can increase facilityo accommodations by 20 to 50 per cent. Anyone who must pick up and deliver their children to St. James School at the corner of Cloveridge (hive and Harwood Avenue in Ajax is well aware of the nightmare in endeavoring to undertake such a chore. Though St. lames is, in my opin- ion, by far one of the best elementary schools in our area, its parking facili- ties are by far the most insufficient. Apparently, when St. James was built, it was with the intention that there would be no regular busing of students, and that students within a one -mile radius of the school would walk. Thee, parking facilities were basi- cally designed for the needs of school personnel, and not parents. Unfortunately though, a one -mile walk is a long hike for five and six year olds, not to mention many par- ents' concerns for their child's safety in walking anywhere, anytime, what with children being abducted, molest- ed and murdered on what seems to be too regular a basis these days. Needless to say, parking to pick up our children at the end of the day is a nightmare, but a necessity neverthe- less. Fortunately, though, the school personnel are well aware of the park- ing problem and have obviously fore- warned the children about the hazards of muting between parked cars and the necessity of crossing with the crossing guards. But along with the chaos and con- gestion in the school parking lot at the end of the school day, there arc many parents who park along Cloveridge awaiting their children, blatantly ignoring the "No stopping" signs posted there. And I am one of those parents. Granted, I am breaking the law by disregarding the 'No stopping' signs, but it's either that or risk my life and the lives of others, in the school park- ing lot! I realize the 'No stopping' signs are posted along Cloveridge for the safety of the school children, and I've been fortunate in that I've never wit- nessed a child trying to cross Cloveridge between my parked car and any other. As I've said, the teach- ers and staff' of St. James have done a thorough job of stressing to the chil- dren the importance of using the crossing guards, and the dangers of running between parked cars. But aside from that, we parents who are parked illegally are that much more alar to children who may stray between the cars. We're well aware of the dangers, regardless of whether we're parked on the road or in the suicidal parking lot! So on that note, 1'd like to say a few words to the idiot who felt com- pelled to stop in the middle of Low -fifes prey on weak To the editor: When 1 arrived to work Sept. 18, 1 was shocked, upset and appalled by the story of a co-worker who was beaten up by some young teenagers on his way home the pre- vious afternoon. This is a man who is absolutely harmless. He is kind, generous, polite and a good worker. He hap- pens to also be mentally handi- capped and this is the reason for abuse. As it turns out, three teenagers have been harassing him all sum- mer, and it has turned violent. Not only did they punch and kick him, they pushed him down to the ground in front of an approaching truck. Who are these low-lifes who get some kind of thrill out of beating up a defenseless person? Who are the parents of these children who haven't managed to teach them respect for others, any form of val- lite News Advertiser welcomes letters to the editor on topical issues, controversial matters and anything else of interest to our readers. These are three Ajax youths! This has not happened in the "big city". It happened in broad daylight at a local plaza. The probability of these three youths being caught and punished is slim and our justice system leaves a lot to be desired, but that of course is another story. I can only hope that one day they will get what is coming to them. I am still puzzled by many questions surrounding this inci- dent. Why did no one see this hap- pening and if they did why didn't they get involved? What kind of joy comes from harassing and abusing anyone? Who were these boys — your son perhaps?! Name withheld by request Cloveridge Road, holding up traffic behind him (including an ambu- lance!) in order to yell at me for "stopping in a 'No stopping' zone and bringing danger to the school kids!" Take a look in your rear-view mir- ror, pal! if anyone is a danger to these kids, it's drivers such as yourself! Stopping your car in the middle of a busy road, holding up traffic to yell at someone parked illegally, is hardly what I'd call practising safe driving habits! While you sit in the middle of the road howling and gesturing wildly with your hands, you are distracting us ("illegally -parked parents') fro -r watching that there are no distract children looking into our headlights! So, if you've had a bad day, pal, do us mothers a favor. Go home and rag on your own wife and kids. That I should have to read your name in the Globe & Mail to find out that you are still not fighting to reform your gold-plated pension plan. Please step forward and explain why! As you well know, the MPs' pension plan, as esti- mated by the Chief Actuary of Canada, has an unfunded liabili- ty — a taxpayers' IOU of $144 million. As a constituent in your riding I am absolutely outraged that you are representing your own best interests and not your constituents'. Mr. Soetens, I beseech you, do the honorable thing. Reform your odious pension plan. Bring it in line with the pension plans in the private sector. You have not earned a fully indexed (indexed to the rate of inflation) pension after only six years of service in this community. No MP should receive a pension before the age of 60. The fact that you have not stepped out of the shadows to fight for your taxpaying con- stituents is disgraceful. Allow me to share with you and your constituents the name and address of the MP who is draft- ing the bill to reform the MPs' pension plan: The Hon. Gilles Loiselle PC, MP, President of the Treasury Board, Ninth Floor, L'Esplanade Laurier, Ottawa, ON K1A OR5. Tel: 613-957-2666, Fax: 613-990- 2806. Mr. Soetens, please publish in this newspaper your recom- mendations to Gilles Loiselle. I believe your constituents have a right to know where you stand on this issue before the next election, when, if elected, you become eligible for the pension. Lottery money should go to food banks." .,.,xLetters Traffic nightmare near St. James school To the editor. We're too busy making sure our own chil- dren get into our cars safely, and oth- ers' kids, possibly even yours, don't end up under our cars. If you're so concerned about thew school children, why don't you prac- tise what you preach? C. Sinasac, Ajax Reform MPs' 1* pension plan To the editor: Mr. Rene Soetcns shame, shame, shame on you! Moi subsc*don rates in Canada I yea' Hunting bannedin Concessions Four and Five 6 PICKERING - Reports of injured animals and "near accidents" have prompted Pickering politicians to heed residents' requests to ban hunting on Concessions Four and Five. Council is likely to approve a bylaw Monday that will make it illegal to discharge a gun on both concessions west of Brock Road. The bylaw, approved by corurcil's executive com- mittee last Monday, will leave hunters with stomping grounds east of Brock Road north of Concession Five, excluding the hamlets. Sixty-five residents had signed a Oetition calling for the prohibition of hunting on the land in question. The largest landowner in the area, the min- istry of government services, agreed with the residents. Tlx Pickering Rod and Gun Club, located on Concession Five, will be exempt from the bylaw. Politicians were addressed Monday night by resident Eileen Milley, who warned that there have been "near •ccidents" and "it's just a matter of time before a child or adult is seriously injured" Mrs. Milley said guns are being discharged 40 or 50 feet from homes; domestic animals have been hurt; and "hunters with chain saws have been building blinds and baiting deer so they can shoot them." She said residents would have no problem with members of the Pickering Rod and Gun Club being allowed to operate in the arca as usual. "They're certainly responsible." Workers hurtJ:1 PICKERING - Two men were injured in separate work accidents Wednesday. Durham Regional Police say a 27 - year -old laborer was working on the second floor of a construction project on Meadowlane Crescent when he fell down a stairwell injuring his back. He was treated and released at Ajax and Pickering General Hospital. In another incident just after 3 p.m., emvlovee at the water pollution control plant on McKay Road was installing heat sensors when he inad- vertently touched a live wire. A co- WM= pushed him away, injuring the victim's arm He was held overnight at the hospital for observation. That is why Cedarcroft Place, one of Oshawa's newest and most un -to -date retirement centres, ,00k great care to create an atmosphere that caters to the varying degrees of independence of its residents. Cedarcroft is a unique place, with a unique concept_ First of all, there is no age restriction. Second, each resident (or couple) will never have to leave Cedarcroft -- unless they want to. Unlike most senior citizens' homes, when Cedarcroft's residents require nursing care, they dem't have to move to a nursing home. Extra nursing care is available without the resident having to move from his or her suite. As Doreen Bennink, Cedarcroft's administrator puts it, "This can be your home fore _r." Such reassurance provides peace of mind to prospective residents and their families, as senior citizens generally dislike relocating, nio matter how short the distance. Another factor that helps Cedarcroft residents feel rtxrc settled is the fact tha: they can clxx)sc to have kitchen facilities in their private suites; they can also do their own laundry, if they w'`uir your co"Od is oar concent choose. But as they become more restricted in their abilities, the staff provides nursing and supportive services right in Gic resident's suite, if that is a n, ed. Perhaps the first and moll obvious distinction of Cedarcroft is its designer -style interior. More like a hotel than a senior's centre, its wane, inviting colors arc conducive to well - being. In addition, the foyer and hallways are spacious and bright, with a most appealing decor. The lobby is welcoming, the dining room spacious and bright, the recreation and television rooms are pleasant, and the library, complete with fireplace, is cozy and elegant. Suites are available for single, drwble or ward occupancy. Each suite includes a private cnsuile bathroom. The management's commitment to the comfort and safety of its residents is reflected in the fully air conditioned reruns, built-in emergency cal system and coded security doors- A supery isor is on duty 2.1 hours a day. A lulls staffed kitchen provides appetinng and individualized meals. If a special dirt is required, that is easily accommoditcd. Other wryices include x ray and laN,raton Lk ilitics, medical staff, a podiatrist, barber and hairdresser. In addition, personal in-house banking and investment consultation services are available, The centre's daily program includes social and recreational activities under the guidance of an activity director. Short-term respite care allows families to place a parent, spouse or relative for short periods while they enjoy a rest or vacation. Mrs. Bennink says all the services are part of the commitment that Cedarcroft Place and Meadowcroft Management Group -- its parent company -- make to the residents. In turn, the residents are able to exercise Personal choices over their own lives. With 20 years success behind it, Meadowcroft operates retirement centres throughout Ontario and in Florida. Mrs. Bennink, who also has 20 years experience in nursing and administration, is enthusiastic about her role at Cedarcroft. She echoes the sentiments of other staff members when she says, -Working in a setting like 'his isn't like 'being at work'." Frank Jonke, 6, a member of the Actrex Angels mite division squad, has been tearing up the soccer pitch with his goal -scor- ing ability, netting more than 35 goals in the team's 10 -game schedule. According to his coach Sam Farag, Jonke has asserted him- self as a natural goal -scorer to lead the league in that depart- ment. "He's a Gretzky-like player of soccer," says Farag. "A real natural. At the end of the sea - son, he was also beginning to set up goals. He's turning into an all-around good ball player.,' Jonke was also instrumental in leading his team to a nine wins, one loss record which put them at the top of the mite divi- sion standings. Farag recalls that in the loss, Jonke was off the field for most of the first half with the opposi- tion breaking out into a 4-0 lead. In the second half, Jonke led a comeback, scoring three goals, but coming up short of the win.
