They decided to go to the province and ask for money and other alternatives to handle the waste problem. Consultants originally told coun- cil the station would cost SIO million and even that figure was too high for some. The S50 -million price tag would force the region to find additional revenues of 5250 per household in Durham every year for five years. A new Durham dump is expected to be ready by 1997, leaving the 100,000 - square -foot, multi -million -dollar facility useless. The transfer station was ordered built by environment minister Ruth Grier. She wants it complete by December 1992. The facility will store Durham's garbage until it's transferred to Keele Valley in York region. Pickering councillor George Martin said he was "appalled" at the cost. "Fifty million dollars for what is a drop -through (for garbage) ... it boggles the mind.: Some suggested the waste trans- fer station be turned into a recycling centre after a Durham dump is built. At this point, Pickering mayor Wayne Arthurs put his foot down. He accused councillors of making deci- sions without even considering the "happy host component-- Mayor omponent"Mayor Arthurs warned, "If we have to go to war again...believe me we will." He said Pickering won't be dictated to by the region or the province. Proctor and Redfern Limited, the consultants hired to examine the fea- sibility of constructing a transfer sta- tion at Brock West, have chosen five potential sites for the building. And, they informed council the price of the building rises $5 million for "fast-track" construction. Pickering councillor Doug Dickerson's motion to "suspend fur- ther expenditures" on the station until region officials speak with Ms. Grier was approved After the meeting, chairman Herrema said he believes council will "defy" Ms. Grier's order instead of asking taxpayers to spend $50 million. school trustee By LINDA WHITE Education Reporter DURHAM - A paper opposing teens' use of condoms will be sent to some separate school board staff members, despite the fact that at least one trustee thinks it was written by a "dinosaur". "I don't think the board should send this document out," Pickering trustee Kevin Ashe argued at Monday's meeting of the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board. "Anyone who wrote this was a dinosaur. It's in contradic- tion to (education) ministry guidelines, though it obviously contains some very ;mportant messages." The paper, written by Archbishop Aloysius Ambrozic of Toronto, oppos- es the teaching of condom use and promotes chastity among unmarried couples. "Catholic educators cannot teach that abstinence is the best choice for teenagers and at the same time provide irlstrtiction in the use of condoms," he writes. "Such advice is as cormadicto- ry as the promotion of clean needles would be in a drug abuse prevention pin-" A notion to send the paper to prin- cipals, parent-teacha association pres- idents, and "appropriate" staff mem- bers "as information only" was Nought forward by Ajax trustee Susan Dulny at Monday night's meeting. after a similar motion was defeated in June. Letters Soetens challenged to debate Tories' economic policy to the editor: It never ceases to amaze me how our federal MP can spout off the words put into his mouth (and hence into print) the exact blubbering of his superiors — "Ottawa Has No Money for Employee Raises": (MP Report Sept. 11). After falling flat on their faces with their so-called emergency plan to see that seniors and other deserv- ing Canadians would get their cheques the week of the postal strike starting, he is now attempting to bol- ster his party's lowly standing by trying to instill in the minds of his electors that the Public Service Alliance of Canada is the scourge of the earth'. In view of the fact that the over- whelming majority of PSAC mem- bers are women eaming less than 527,000 a year, I would like to make the following points — and I chal- lenge Mr. Soetens at any time at his convenience to debate the following points: - How could his government justi- fy giving top civil servants a hefty increase to their incomes of 4.5 per cent? - An 11 per cent increase in MP's salaries on Jan. 1 just two months before freezing public service pay. (A $9,000 increase that included $6,000 allowance for meals, accommodation and travel (anew item). - If his government is so keen on restraint of public funds, how come the travel budget of MPs and their families is expected to hit $12 mil- lion this year (compared with S73 million a year ago)? In the past year, special trips for MPs' families climbed 43 per cent. - Where did his government find the money to appoint a "former" dis- graced cabinet member (of their first term) to a 5100,000 a year job on the Federal Development Bank — a five-year appointment? - Where did his government find the money to finance the prime min- ister's pledge to U.S. President Bush's "popularity campaign" in the Persian Gulf? - Where is his government going to find the money to pay for their popularity campaign that former finance minister Mr. Wilson is pranc- ing around Europe pledging aid to "new democracies"? - "lite Recession is over" crooned his baritone leader at the convention List month — yea, yea, and all those job losses and shutdowns etc., etc., are all "misprints" in the press! That was the headline and the very important subject on the edito- rial page of the Sept. 1 I edition of a local newspaper. In the next few weeks, I plan to set the process in motion so that the constituents of Ontario Riding can participate in discussions about the future of their country. To the editor: Limping lightly onward for the March of Dimes, we placed our dimes on the side of the road as he passed by. That was Kitchener, well over 10 years ago. Having the honor of shaking hands and a God bless I will establish a process of dia- logue, education, debate and com- munication that will hopefully aid in a successful resolution. The aim will clearly be so that I can listen, understand other points of view and find solutions that fit. Soetens to set up constitutional meetings Constitution can serve us well To the editor: "Are they prepared to listen?" That was the headline and the very important subject on the edito- rial page of the Sept. 1 I edition of a local newspaper. Canada is about to enter a very serious debate about the very future of our country. The government will soon be releasing its constitutional proposals for discussion and Canadians will want to respond because it will affect them all. Terry Fox honored with memorial run Abi ax fm To the editor: The following is a copy of a let- ter to Mr. Brian Skinner, deputy recreation director, Ajax parks and recreation. Dear Mr. Skinner: After perusing the membership section in the "Fall '91, Winter '92 Programs and Services" book, my husband, children and I were dis- mayed to discover the fact that the Ajax parks and recreation depart- ment does not offer any type of annual family memberships and the only way to receive an annual pass Mirabel Airport cdismal, As your Member of Parliament, I am charged with the responsibility to be your representative. I am not a constitutional expert but I will have to make a decision and in doing so, I will need input and help from the constituents of Ontario Riding. How I will do that is a challenge. U we all enter this constitutional pro- cess with the same ideas, our consti- tution will serve us well. Rene Soetens, Member of Parliament, Ontario Riding you, I said a silent prayer. Holding back tears, but showing outward compassion for such a soul as this Terry Fox. Ajax honors the Terry Fox of the age in its memorial Terry Fox nut. Grace Maxwell, Ajax nil y pass n eeded to the swimming facilities is in the torn of passes. My husband is an avid squash player and my children and myself swim (we would also like to take up the game of squash), but at an annual cost of between $353.10 (one adult squash membership and one yearly pass for swimming) to $674.10 (two adult squash member- ships and two youth memberships) we feel that this amount is exorbi- tant and many families will not be able to enjoy the facilities. We believe that the Ajax parks To the editor: Anybody who believes Pickering needs an airport should visit Mirabel. Mirabel Airport, in the middle of nowhere, is a deserted dismal monument to senseless government squandering of taxpayers' money. and recreation department should offer some type of family member- ship at a reduced rate. Abuse of the system could be prevented by Photo -identification membership cards. We look forward to hearing from you as we feel that this is a concern which should be addressed. Jennifer Hunt, Ajax P.S. The above figures do not include families who have more than two children nor full health memberships. While I spent from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. in its graveyard atmosphere not one departure took place, and all of three small planes landed. It was not low season nor was there a strike in progress. Selected Chevrolet dealers deal- ers will offer the Geo Metro, Geo Storm and the Geo Tracker. The Geo Storm is the sporty per- formance coupe of the Geo family. The Storm GSi is equipped with a 1.8 -litre 16 -valve four cylinder engine as standard equipment that produces 140 horsepower, which is 48 hp more that the 1.6 -litre SOHC powerplant in the standard Storm 2+2 and hatchback. Equipped with a multi -port fuel injection system, the 1.8 -litre engine has been engineered to deliver out- standing power at higher engine speeds without sacrificing the low - range throttle response. A 1.6 -litre L4 12 -valve SOHC engine with multi -port fuel injection is standard on the 2+2 coupe and the hatchback models. The 1992 Storms have a front end with mini -quad halogen head- lamps, a distinctive front end appearance and flush -mounted tint- ed glass. The GSi model adds to that a wing -type spoiler and round fog lamps and an exterior color called French Blue Mica. All interior fabrics receive Scotchgard Fabric Protector as stan- dard equipment. Rear radio speakers are located in the rear seat side pan- els for best acoustical characteris- tics. A five -speed manual transmission is standard equipment on all Storms. An automatic trans- mission (three -speed on the standard Storm and Storm hatchback, four - speed on the GSi) is optional. Other standard equipment includes a MacPherson strut front and rear suspension, power front- disc/rear drum brakes and driver's side air bag. Steel wheels with aero - style wheel covers are standard equipment on the Storm and Storm hatchback. The GSi is equipped with 15 -inch sport alloy wheels. All Storms are equipped with all -season steel -belted radial tires. Power, rack-and-pinion steering is standard on all models. Quick - ratio power steering continues as standard equipment on the GSi model. The coupe will likely appeal to young singles and first-time buyers who appreciate the Storm's distinc- tive styling, while the GSi will like- ly attract a slightly older more afflu- ent driver. The hatchback will be great for young couples, especially those with small children, seeking affordable transportation and value. tch our special 192 eview. on Sept. -25 The u-w-oiomon ALL VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOW AVAILABLE IN: *Traditional White Oxford Blue -Avocado Green -Sandstone -Dove Grey -Deep Bronze -Almond 'Choose casement, double hung, side slider or half -round styles, each custom crafted to fit your window replacement project Easyto-clean -No maintenance ® RS+r.e adonak a Darwwd t 6a" t: iW- rraosa ado pEI&q. Cedarcroft Place: a setting where seniors thrive Independence is an impirtant part ,if one's life. That is why Cedarcroft Place, one of (hhawa's newest and most un -to date retirement centres, cook great care to create an atmosphere that caUxs to the varying degrees of independence of its residents. Cedarcroft is a umgtw. place, with a unique concept. First of all. Miers is no age restriction. Second, cath resident (or couple) will never have to leave Cedarcroft - unless they want to. Unlike most senior cilizens' homes, when Cedarcroft'% residents require nursing care, they doxi t have to move to a nursing home. Extra nursing care is available without the resider having to move from his or her suite. As Doreen Rennink. Cedarcroft's administrator puts it, "This can be your home fixe cr." Such reassurance provide% peace of mind to prospective residents and their families, as senior citizens generally dislike relocating. no, matter how short the distance. Another facuir that helps Caiarcroh residents feel ►pore sett) t! is the fact that they -_an chcx►sc k► have kitchen facilities in their private suites; they can also do, their own lautrnirv, if they choose. Nur as they hr. •.int. more restricted ui their abilities, the staff provides nursing and supportive sL rvices right in tau resident s suite, it that is a n,!, -)d. Perhaps the first anti most oin ious distinction of Cedarcroft is its designer style interior. More like a hotel than a senior's centre, u wamu, inviting colors are conducive to well- being. In addition, the foyer and 'lallways are spacious and bright, witn a most alifi alirig decor. The lobby is welcoming, the dining roont spacious and bright, the recreation and television Tooms are pleasant, and the library, complete with fireplace, is cozy and elegant. Suites are available for single, double or ward occupancy. Each suite includes a private ensuite hathroom. The management's commitment to die comfort and safety of its residents is reflected in the fully air-condilioned roonts, built-in emergency call system and coded security doors. A supiervisor is on duty 24 hours a day. A fully staffed kitchen pro%Ides appetising and individualised meals. If a special diet is required, that is easily acconunodaled. (hher services include x-ray and laboratory facilities, medical staff, a podiatrist, h.rb.er and hairdresser. In addition, personal in-house banking and investment consultation sc7s i,c, are available. Mrs. fiennink says all the scr%ices are part of the cornmitment that Cedarcroft Place and :kicaklowcrof, Management Group its parent company make to the residents. Mrs. Rennink, who also has 20 years experience in nursing and administration, is enthusiastic about her role at Cedarcroft. She echoes the sentiments of other staff members when she says, "Working in a setting like this isn't like 'being at work'." At the rear of the building, the perfectly manicured grounds are completely fenced, reassuring families of the protected environment even though it is located on one of the city's main thoroughfares. with a park and nearby shopping plata.
