Since a fact -finder's report was released by the Educations Relations Committee in mid- August, the Durham secondary unit of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association and the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board have met twice. Still, they're far apart on a number of important issues, including wages, class size, job security and benefits. Teachers have been asking for a 9.2 -per cent increase in a one-year contract, while the board has offered a pay hike of 3.25 per cent. While there's been "some movement by both sides" on those figures, "not enough" has been made to reach an agreement, according to negotiating committee chairman and Pickering trustee !pian Zecchino. (Those numl)ers can't be released b, c: `cr -,,any %%hlle are taking place.) "We presented a fair and reasonable offer," says Zecchino, "but it's not what they want. They're adamant in their position. We're not going anywhere." Teachers now earn from 522,092 to 559,344 a year, while principals who'll also be covered by the new contract bring in from $72,214 to 576,961. (There is no set figure for vice -principals.) All are looking for wage pari- ty with their public school board counterparts, who earn about $5.000 more a year, says union president Blair Morris. "In the '70s, there was no differential between the two boards," explains Morris. But we're seeing a continual erosion and it's reached an alarming level, especially for teachers who've got the same qualifications and the same experience. In fact, most are doing more work for less money because we're working with larger class sizes and less support service." Another CoIJWShepherd cross was found by officials to be in poor health and without food or water. Approximately 40 calls are received each month: The majority involve dogs that are tied up outside and not being fed or given water. About 10 per cent of calls are "serious" and require action such as charges or removal of the pet. The Oshawa and District Humane Society only has three inspectors, notes Wooley. Witty promised that "each and every resident of Ajax and Pickering" will receive a brochure with a reply card for contribution during the campaign, which wraps up mid-December. That decision was reached at the Durham Board of Education's regular meeting recently, despite some hesitation by director Pauline Laing. This represents rather new terri- tory for our staff," Laing told trustees. "I'm not convinced that we have the expertise." Oshawa trustee Audrey MacLean agreed. "This issue is out of our jurisdiction," she warned the board. "There are lots of other issues closer to our mandate." But Ajax trustee Darrel Berry was adament in his support of the issue. "I think of it as a health and safety issue, and we are dealing with a number of those issues, including safe sex and drug education. Guns in schools are a very real problem in Toronto and Windsor and will be a problem out here one day." Earlier this year, the Scarborough Board of Education wrote to the minister of justice and attorney gen- eral of Canada informing them of their support of the proposed gun control legislation. Because Scarborough is hoping other boards will follow suit, that letter was for- warded to the Durham board. Catholic teachers after new contract FROM PAGE I than does the public board.) According to Fred Sweeney, superintendent of personnel, "We have offered what we believe is a basis for settlement. The ball is in their court right now." Morris says he's not under the impression that the board has pre- sented its final offer, but is planning to meet with a committee which represents the board's 290 secondary teachers before proceeding fur- ther with negotiations. It will then decide whether to present another proposal to the board or ask it for its final offer. If the board agrees to present a final offer, the union's membership will vote on it. If it's accepted, the matter is resolved, but if they reject it, teachers must decide whether they want to go back to the negotiat- ing table or to call a strike vote. Moms says it's unlikely a strike vote would be called before November. The board is set to begin negotiations with its two other unions — one of which represents English and French elementary teachers and the other which serves the board's French secondary teachers — on Sept. 17. However, I was dis- appointed that only the Midway team was mentioned especially con- sidering M & M Meats won. Thee children also worked hard all season and I believe that they deserve equal credit so here are the details on the M & M team. Leading the way was Axle Riley with five home runs and some excel- lent defensive plays in field and short stop. Helping out the offense was Amanda Everett with a home run and a triple. Neil McBride added to the efforts with a three -run home run and his great first base coverage. Other players helping out at bat and in field were Dylan Ostapyk, Blair Cresswell and Justin Mowatt~ Solid playing by Steven Tippett and Andy Nienhuis at third, Adam Cassidy at second, and Darragh McDonald as pitcher, combined for plays resulting in several outs in the infield and Matthew Doran came up with a great catch for a fly out. Missing from the finals but adding to the team throughout the season were Elizabeth Lippers and Kale Nichols. The manager was Peter Tippett and helping coach the team were Greg Doran and Nick Nichols. Special mention should go to Tony O'Brien for filling in when needed. So as you can see the M & M team had a great game too, lots of fun and a wonderful summer. J. Mowatt, Editor's Note: We received game information from the Midway Carpet team. The board's newest committee — and its largest— is a 15 -member environment group chaired by Debbie Sawyer of Cardinal Containers. The committee will begin setting its policies this fall as it prepares to fill its mandate of becoming an environmental resource for board members. "It's a dynamic group of people involved," says Sawyer. "Our function is to have a positive, reac- tive attitude." The committee plans to develop a business resource library, says Sawyer. It will include a manual showing businesses how to become environmentally -friendly, and advice on how to comply with new legislation that restricts materials businesses may take to dumps. Sawyer notes that many small busi- nesses can't afford to hire waste stream management companies for recycling advice. The manual will go to all board members and articles on other envi- ronmental issues will be included in the board's newsletter, Trade Talk. The committee also plans to take the business community's concerns to the provincial chamber of com- merce, says Sawyer. "We want to be a contact for people with concerns or those who need information. There are so many valid concerns in the area. The list goes on and on how many things we can get involved in." The committee's resources will be available to board members only. For information, call 427- 4470. THE NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY, SEPT. NIGHT SCHOOL REGIS- TRATION: The Durham Board of Education will hold registration for night school at Harwood Secondary Cedarcroft Place: Cedarcroft Place: a setting where seniors thrive Independence is an important part of one's life. That is why Cedarcroft Place, one of Oshawa 's newest and most up-to-date retirement centres, :ook great care to create an atmosphere that caters to the varying degrees of independence of its residents. Cedarcroft is a unique place, with a unique concept. First of all, there is no age restriction. Second, each resident (or couple) will never have to leave Cedarcroft -- unless they want to. Unlike most senior citizens' homes, when Cedarcroft's residents require nursing care, they don't have to move to a nursing home. Extra nursing care is available without the resident having to move from his or her suite. As Doreen Bennink, CedarCioft'S administrator puts it, "This can be your home forever." Such reassurance provides peace of mind to prospective residents and their families, as senior citizens generally dislike relocating, no matter w short the distance. Another factor that helps Cedarcroft resident feel more scaled is the fact that they can choose to have kitchen facilities in their private suites; they can also do their own laundry, if they *T - choose. But as they become more restricted in their abilities, the staff Provides nursing and supportive services right in the resident's suite, if that is a need. Perhaps the first and most obvious distinction of Cedarcroft is its designer -style interior. More like a hotel than a senior's centre, its warm, inviting colors are conducive to well- being. In addition, the foyer and hallways are spacious and bright. with a most appealing decor. The lobby is welcoming, the dining room spacious and bright. the recreation and television rooms are pleasant, and the library, complete with fireplace, is cozy and elegant. Suites are available for single, double or ward occupancy. Each suite includes a private ensuite bathroom. The management's commitment to the comfort and safety of its residents is reflected in the fully air-conditioned rooms, built-in emergency call system and coded security doors. A supervisor is on duty 24 hours a day. A fully -staffed kitchen provides appetizing and individualized meals. If a special diet is required, that is easily accommodated. Other services include x-ray and laboratory facilities, medical staff, a podiatrist, barber and hairdresser. In addition, personal in-house banking and investment consultation services are available. The centre's daily program includes social and recreational activities under the guidance of an activity director. Short-term respite care allows families to place a parent, spouse or relative for short periods while they enjoy a reu or vacation. Mrs. Bemtink says all the services are part of the commitment that Cedarcroft Place and Meadowcroft Management Group -- its parent company -- make to the residents. In turn, the residents are able to exercise personal choices over their own lives. With 20 years success behind it, Meadowcroft operates retirement centres throughout Ontario and in Florida. Mrs. Bennink. who also has 20 years experience innursing and administration, is enthusiastic about her role at Cedarcroft. She eclaes the sentiments of other staff members when she says, "Working in a setting like this isn't like being at work'.- At ork' "At the rear of the building, the perfectly manicured grounds are completely fenced, reassuring families of the protected environment even though it is located on one of the city's main thoroughfares, with a park and nearby shopping plaza. Public transit stops right in front of the building. The staff is trained and prepared to handle a variety of daily routines and activities suited to varying degrees of independence. And they are dedicated to providing service tailored to each of the resident's needs -- whether that need is medical attention, companionship or just making the resident feel more comfortable. Cedarcroft tours take place Mon. to Fri. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sat. and Sun. noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call 723- 9490. 649 KING 5f. The SC400 is a 4.0 -litre, 250 horsepower quad cam V8 -powered vehicle that also fea- tures Traction Control (TRAC), ABS, drivers side airbag. leather interior and an electronically -controlled power moonroof. In fact, the only options are a rear spoiler and the cellular phone. Vigor offers value and good looks VIGOR/From page 11 is four -speed automatic. I found the computers sometimes hesitated in picking a gear during downshift or passing. The engine and drivetrain in the Vigor were willing at all times to respond to the right foot and the left proving, to me at least, you can put too many black boxes in a car. The clutch, by the way, is as light as the Civic. Even though the power is sent to the front wheels by a shaft running from the clutch back through the crankshaft, the Vigor can put that power down cleanly. It does so without the binding one can feel with other powerful front -drive sedans, such as the Saab 9000. Stop- ping power comes from four big discs and Honda's version ABS. The exterior shape is a downsiz- ing of the big Legend, even though Acura officials said the designers arrived at the shape without any influences from above about stick- ing to a corporate look. All you can really say is it is contemporary Honda, which is not a bad thing. Fuel economy on a trip to Water- loo and back was exemplary for a luxury sedan, giving 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres. -- The trunk deck appears small, but I managed to load the playpen and highchair in with Kttle effort, there being more than enough room for soft bags, odds and ends. The Vigor's $27,500 price should be noted because this car is bigger. similarly equipped and as fast as the first generation Legend, which list- ed two years ago in the $36,000 neck of the woods. It certainly gives potential buyers of the new BMW 325i or the Audi 90 something to think about, which I'm sure is not lost on Acura officials. I enjoyed this car because it was responsive, it is certainly priced right and the build quality is, hon- estly, second to none -- everything fitting perfectly and drie entire pack- age working as one unit. •rur Iuoavc . n.roTro on o ` H-Eg9VOLUMEDEALER BRINGS VOUJ1rF••.
