PICKERING - Botulism poisoning is sus-
pected in the deaths of an unknown number of
ducks, geese and swans in Frenchman's Bay.
Resident volunteers gathered about 20 dead
birds from the Pickering shoreline earlier this
week and on Thursday, at their own expense,
transported some carcasses to the University
of Guelph for testing. The volunteers were
coordinated by Hilary Pittel of the Avicare
Bird Rehabilitation Centre, Ajax.
Pittel says she unsuccessfully tried to solic-
it government help in picking up the birds and
getting them to Guelph.
"I feel like I've been talking to every gov-
ernment level in the world," says a frustrated
Pittel. "I'm having trouble finding who's
responsible."
But ministry of natural resources fish and

AJAX - A citizens' group is proceeding with its request for a more strin-
gent environmental assessment of a new water supply plant proposed for
the town's lakefront.
Dave McGregor, chairman of the Ajax Save the Waterfront Committee,
says, "We continue to be concerned with the methodology used in preparing
the Environmental Study Report (ESR) and the process the region went
though in regards to it."
Durham region wants to build a plant in Ajax to supply water to both
Ajax and Pickering. The plant would be built in two stages — the first to
provide up to 36 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD) and the second to
boost supply capacity to 72 MIGD.
The first phase would be completed by 1994, while the second stage
wouldn't be needed until after the year 2000.
The ESR outlines the planning process used by Durham region in select -
ing a site. It was filed with the
regional clerk on July 11 and oppo-
nents of the site had until Aug. 19
to file objections with the provin-
cial minister of the environment

wildlife supervisor Tracy Smith says his office
was unaware that residents were looking for
help. "Action from this office is pretty swift,"
he assures. -We would respond quickly to
that..
Smith says he visited the shoreline near the
foot of Sandy Beach Road about a week ago
but found only four dead birds that had been
dead too long to be tested.
Smith says he's 99 per cent sure the birds
are dying from botulism, a toxin associated
with warm, still water and low water levels.
Under those conditions, vegetation deprived of
oxygen becomes an ideal breeding ground for
the bacteria that produces botulism. Feeding
waterfowl become sick and die, and maggots
on their carcasses help spread the disease to
other birds, which eat the maggots.

Woman charged
for failing to have
dog destroyed
PICKERING - A Pickering
woman told to have her dog eutha-
nized faces a possible $5,000 fine for
failing to comply with the court
order.
Connie McDonald of Front Road
was instructed by a Justice of the
Peace July 30 to give her pit bull -
Labrador cross to animal control
officers. The dog, considered
vicious, was ordered destroyed fol-
lowing a court hearing.
But the dog has been missing
since the court decision and
McDonald maintains she has no idea
where it is.
The missing dog, named Caesar,
reportedly killed another dog in
May. A second McDonald dog — a
pit bull that's now dead — is also
said to have participated in that
attack.
Five days before the court hear-
ing, McDonald's pit bull was shot by
police at Front Road and Bayview
Street after it reportedly charged an
officer and direatened a child.
Both McDonald dogs are also
considered responsible for several
other attacks on neighborhood dogs
and cats.
McDonald has already been
charged with more than a dozen
bylaw infractions and was ordered to
pay restitution to several residents
whose animals were attacked.
Now, with her failure to produce
the missing pit -bull Labrador cross,
she faces a fine of up to $5,000
under a charge of failing to comply
with a court order, says crown attor-
ney Steve McGuire.

gent and would examine the planning process used by the region.
Opponents would have to request the provincial minister of the
environment to "bump up" the review to an individual EA.
"We feel the public input asked for on occasion was ignored,"
McGregor says, 'There's no evidence in the ESR that the concerns of
Ajax residents were taken into account. The whole process, we main-
tain, was predetermined and economic factors were the major driver."
Gabe Oliver, the project engineer for Durham region, says a
bump -up request should be reviewed within 45 days by the environ-
ment ministry staff. but adds an extension would probably be
required.
If Ruth Grier, the environment minister, grants a bump up, an indi-
vidual EA would take at least two years to complete.
Current water supply capacity will be reached by 1994.

If in fact the birds are dying from
botulism, there's nothing to be done
except to keep the environment
clean of dead birds, says Smith. He
says his department would suggest
that the town pick them up.
But Pickering's director of com-
munity services and facilities, Tom
Quinn, reports that his staff have
turned clean-up efforts over to the
Pickering -Ajax -Whitby (PAW)
Animal Control Service. Previously,
town staff picked up about 50 or 60
dead birds in a month, he says.
However, PAW manager Ross
Balbernie says he was personally
unaware of the situation and
promised to call Pittel.
Meanwhile, Pittel is injecting
sick birds with anti -toxin and reports
that it's working. But her supply of
anti -toxin is limited.
"I can't get any answers on how
to improve things," says Pittel, who
adds that her volunteers "deserve
gold stars". Her big worry is migrat-
ing shore birds. "I see them coming
down with botulism and I feel pretty
sad."

municipality shall be permitted in accordance with the provisions of the zoning by-laws
regulating the use of suxhh land and as such by-laws may be amended.

The purpose of this By-law is to prohibit the establishment of Adult Entertainment Parlours in all 'M2"
- General Industrial and 'M3" - Heavy Industrial zones as identified by By-law 35-77. The passing of
this By-law will provide a one year moratorium on the development of new Adult Entertainment
Parlours on those lands identified on Schedule 'A. This By-law will provide the Town of Ajax the
opportunity to conduct a comprehensive land -use study on these particular uses.

The Ontario riding of the Reform
Party of Canada hears the echo of the
Shakespearean dictum: "There is a
tide in the affairs of man, which,
taken at the flood. leads on to victory.

spent in shallows and in misery."
With these prophetic words ringing in
our ears and the economy and spirit
of our country sinking into shallows
and misery, we, a battalion of hail and
hearty types grappled the task of run-
ning a Reform Party booth at the
Pickering Village Festival "with
hoops of steel to our souls."
Man a booth on an asphalt road in
100 -degree temperature with little to
eat and less to drink? No problem!
We arrived at 7 a.m. wearing our
Reform Party T shirts, "as the appar-
el oft proclaims the man". We all
drew a deep breath and prepared "to
tell our story".
Old Kingston Road seemed to us
"a sterile promontory", hardly a soul
in sight. Peter Simonsen instinctively
began to construct the booth that we
would call home for the next 10
hours. The Reform Party banner

Re: MP Rene Soetens' private
members' bill
As if it wasn't bad enough that
our federal MP vainly tried to shift
the country's economic problems to
the "untried" provincial regime, he
now comes up with a brilliant idea,
i.e. "try to pass a bill to take away
tax-free goodies."
The response from our local
councils and school boards was pre-
dictable; and why not? Is there any
better paying part-time labor
around? And how about that com-
ment of our own "chief magistrate"
of the town of Ajax, mayor Jim
Witty? It would not be a great prob-
lem for him — but, (if by some
magic, Mr. Soetens wins the jackpot
and his name is drawn and miracle
K2 happens and it passes into law)
— then he wants his salary
increased so he doesn't lose any-
thing! How nice; and from the man
who said last April that "the com-
munity is expressing grave concern
about welfare costs. We, as a coun-
cil, are responsible and have to do
something about it. We have to send
a message to the province."

If his worship wants to "send out
messages" to his taxpayers in Ajari,
why did he and his council not
snake any attempt to condemn the
GST and other repulsive measures
by our federal government, such as
the cutback to the provinces (some
$3.6 billion to Ontario) causing the
domino effect on municipalities to
cover their welfare and education
and so on?
At a time when towns around the
province are "declaring" tax revolts,
our town leader is concerned for his
own "secondary" income (one-third
tax free, that is). He may sip "free"
bubbly to celebrate the questionable
end of the recession, but he should
check the strength of his bifocals, if
his optometrist has not gone belly -
up. that is!

they became. "It was an appetite that
grew on what it fed." Having suf-
fered, since 1982, "the slings and
arrows of outrageous" Conservative
government, it is time to take steps
"against this sea of trouble and by
opposing, end them". Remove
Mulroney and elect Preston
Manning! "'Tis a consummation
devoutly to be wish'd."
By the end of the day, we had
handed out more than 1,600 pam-
phlets and newsletters, made many
new members and collected more
than $300. A good time was had by
all! As my tired and aching body
collapsed into bed, I moaned "to
sleep perchance to dream" and spot-
ting the Ben Gay on the -night table 1
breathed a sigh of relief "ah, there's
the rub!"

I was recently diagnosed and
hospitalized for viral meningitis.
It was a very unpleasant
experience, but thanks to Dr.
Henderson and all the nursing
staff at the Ajax -Pickering
General Hospital, who looked
after the so well, I was released
within a couple of days.

The victory iced the best -of -five
Ontario Baseball Association
(OBA) qualifying series for the
Ajax midgets who won three games
to one.
Ajax will represent the Eastern
Ontario Baseball Association
(EOBA) at the Ontario 'AAA'
Baseball Championships at Leaside
on the Labor Day weekend.
A combination of strong pitch-
ing, defence and speed on the bases
led Ajax to the one-sided victory.
Ajax scored 11 runs on II hits,
while recording 10 stolen bases.
Ajax led the contest 5-0 after five
innings, and buried Oshawa with a
six -run seventh inning.
The battery of pitcher Andrew
Kolbin and catcher Scott Smith held
Oshawa batters in check the entire
game.
Kolbin recorded the one -hit
shutout, striking out three batters
and issuing two walks.
Junior Brown led the hit parade
by scoring two runs on two hits,
while stealing two bases. Tyler
Matskiw notched two runs on one
hit. with three stolen bases, includ-

PICK8UM - When you're a newly -minted Sberidan College
graduate trying to break into the tough business of making movies,
you find that job offers are scarce.
Short on experience and long on enthusiasm, John Mokedanz of
Pickering found himself in that position and did the logical thing —
he created his own job by starting a production company.
The company, Hot Wire Productions, is busy shooting its first
feature film and the job will bring the cast and crew to Pickering
Sunday and Monday, where scenes will be shot at the Mokedanz
home on Pine Grove Avenue.
[here's a lot of love in this crew," says Mokedanz, 22. There
must be — unless the finished movie interests video companies and
makes some money, no one on the cast or crew will be paid.
"I hope it turns out; it's tough out there," observes Mokedanz. "I
just want to keep on making movies. I don't want to be rich beyond

belief."
With his co -producers and classmates Dominic Menegon and
Brian Trerice, Mokedanz is creating a science -fiction thriller called
The Few with a budget of about $15,000. The plot, he admits, is
hard to explain in a few words.
Basically, the story follows a mar_ who's been kidnapped and
taken on a cross-country journey. Although the man doesn't realize
it at first, he is one of `"rhe Few" — a member of a species of
humans who regenerate every 25 years by waking up in a new body.
As Mokedanz explains it, The Few have to get rid of their old
bodies so they stage a murder -suicide.
The Few aren't stupid, either. `"they get huge life insurance poli-
cies on themselves so they'll get a good start in their new life. It is
kind of a weird concept."
Uh, huh. Maybe we'll have to wait until it comes out on video.
