Welve cases of
'viral meningitis
AJAX - A 13 -year-old Ajax boy
was hospitalized earlier this month
with viral meningitis, the 12th such
case in the area this year.
The boy was released from the
Ajax -Pickering General Hospital
after a four-day stay.
There are two kinds of meningitis
— a condition whereby the mem-
branes covering the brain and spinal
cord become inflamed. According to
Durham's medical officer of health,
Dr. Robert Kyle, most patients with
viral meningitis recover even though
there's no treatment. However, in the
second type — bacterial meningitis
— the case fatality rate is 10 to 15
per cent, he says.
Kyle says that, without having
data on the number of meningitis
cases in previous years, he can't
judge whether the 12 cases at the
Ajax -Pickering hospital in 1991 is
high. Between one and 10 cases of
communicable diseases can be
expected in every 100,000 residents,
he adds.
"It sounds a bit high, but I'd have
to do more digging," he says, adding
that there will always be yearly fluc-
tuations.
"Meningitis has been with us for
years and years and will continue to.
be with us."
The virus causing meningitis is
carried by a large percentage of the
population who remain in perfect
health, Kyle adds. Only certain peo-
ple will develop the disease, which
isn't overly contagious; therefore a
person with meningitis generally
doesn't put others at risk, he says. ,
Kyle suggests that, if a child has a
fever and appears ill, "it would only
make common sense" for a parent to
contact a physician.
New Pickering high-rise planned
PICKERING - A mixed-use development that could include a 12 -storey
apartment building is planned for the corder of Kingston Road and Southview •:
Drive.
Council last week approved an official plan amendment to permit the 298 -
unit, high-density development. The proposal includes eommercW outlets, a 12 -
storey residential building and a three-storey residential building.
A final decision on the height of the buildings will be made after the town

MPP Wiseman named
parliamentary assistant
to corrections minister
AJAX-PICKERING - Durham
West MPP Jim Wiseman has been
appointed the parliamentary assistant
(PA) for Allan Pilkey, Ontario correc-
tional services minister.
Wiseman's appointment was made
on Aug. 9.
Pilkey is also the provincial solici-
tor general, but Wiseman's appoint-
ment doesn't cover that department.
S Premier Bob Rae recently shuffled
his cabinet and moved Pilkey from
the industry, trade and technology
ministry to his new responsibilities.
"With the cabinet shuffle, there
was a shuffle of parliamentary assis-
tants," Wiseman notes.
As a PA. Wiseman says he'll take
"an active role in the development of
policies in the correctional services
ministry. I'll actively outreach to
agencies in the province to gain feed-
back. -
Prior to his PA appointment,
Wiseman had been the chairman of
the finance and economic affairs
committee. With his appointment,
Wiseman had to resign as the chair of
the committee, but he remains a
member.
Wiseman is also a member of the
government agencies committee,
which reviews all government boards,
agencies and committees.
As a PA. Wiseman can answer
questions in the legislature if the min-
ister feels Wiseman could better deal
with the matter.
Wiseman says he'll receive
between 59.000 and $10,000 a year
on top of his base salary as an MPP of
$42,000.
Vacant house fire in Ajax
being probed by police
AJAX - A fire that gutted a vacant house earlier this month is under inves-
tigation by the Durham Regional Police youth bureau.
The Aug. 2 fire occurred in the Elizabeth Street -Riverside Drive area.
Ajax Fire Department officials believe the fire was started by youths who
were seen in the area shortly before the blaze broke out around 10 a -m.
Ajax's 24 division is handling the investigation.

Krehm, whose company owns 78
acres of land designated for industrial
development in the A7 area of Ajax,
told rntuicil that, with the new levy, it
would cost $6t OM an acre to develop
the land and service it with sewers and
water.
In the Buffalo area, he said the cost
ranges from $25,000 to $35,000 an
acre.
Claudia Rieder, a vice-president for
Runnymede Developments, one of the
largest landowners in Ajax, said the
new charge could hurt the town
"With vacancy rates in Ajax, devel-
opers may not look at building another
square foot in Ajax," she said.
Rodger Miller, of the Urban
Development Institute — Durham
Chapter, said the "introduction of a
non-residential levy, we feel, would
seriously impact future industrial and
commercial growth in Ajax."
The region of Durham, Miller
added, isn't going to charge a non-resi-
dential levy because it could hurt
development.
Copies of the report are available at
the Ajax town hall. The public has until
Sept. 10 to submit written comments.
The comments will be used by
Watson and Associates and the town in
determining the final levy charges.
Council will approve a new lot levy in
early October.
If council doesn't approve the new
development charges by the end of
October, the town won't be permitted
to charge any lot levies.

DURHAM - It won't be long before students hit the books for another year,
but there's still time to register for most courses at Durham College.
And that's despite the fact that enrolment at the college is higher this year than
it's ever been before, according to spokesperson Cheryl Bird. It's expected that
enrolment will reach 3,000, up by about 150 from last year.
Only eight programs are full, including such popular choices as sports adminis-
tration, law and security, and nursing and dental courses.
But most technical and applied arts programs still have some spots open, as do
new pert -time (morning) study programs in business administration and fashion
retail administration.
Although classes begin Monday, Aug. 26, registration will remain open for
another two weeks after that date. To set up an appointment with an administration
• counsellor, call 576-0210, extension 497.
The college has also begun taking registration for night courses, which include
both general interest and credit causes. Trent and York universities and Ryerson
Polytechnical Institute all offer night courses at the college, as does the Durham
Management Centre and the Productivity Improvement Centre.
Calendars are available at all public libraries, as well as the main campus at
2000 Simeoe St_ N., Oshawa and the Ajax campus at 400 Monarch Ave. To regis-

The story behind
Ajax's newest
seniors' apartments
To the editor:
In the interest of clarifying the
full story regarding the new senior
citizens' apartments in Ajax, I
offer the following information.
The Ajax Municipal Housing
Corporation staff, under the direc-
tion of its board of directors, orig-
inated this project with an applica-
tion to the Ontario ministry of
housing in April 1989. In August
1989 these efforts were rewarded
with an allocation under the 1990
Federal/Provincial Non -Profit
Housing Program. Ajax Municipal
Housing Corporation and its con-
sultants continued working dili-
gently throughout this period to
bring the application to reality.
Unfortunately in July of 1990 the
federal funding was withdrawn
from the project which stopped all
architectural and engineering
work for a six-week period.
Due to diligent efforts of MPP
Jim Wiseman, former MPP Norah
Stoner, Ajax mayor Jim Witty and
Pat Brown. president of Ajax
Municipal Housing Corporation,
the province of Ontario picked up
the funding and committed the
project under the unilaterally
provincially -funded Homes Now
Program. The mayor's joint task
force which included: J. Witty,
mayor, J. Dickson, regional coun-
cillor, J. Atkinson, councillor, J.
Price, councillor, D.J. Low,
C.A.O., T. Flood, director of parks
and recreation, G. Whittington,
director of business development,
P. Tollefsen, planning director, F.
J. Hull, director of works, J.
Rowe, deputy parks director, R.
Newman, manager, building sec-
tion, J. Hunter, fire prevention
officer, G. D. Kirkbride, treasurer,
C. Curtis, development approvals -
manager, V. Goad, development
approvals, police superintendent

the genesis of this project.
Westwood Manor was con-
ceived by the housing corporation,
designed and refined by consul-
tants employed by Ajax Municipal
Housing Corporation. The funding
to subsidize this project is entirely
through the province of Ontario.
The town, through the sale of two
acres of this site to Ajax
Municipal Housing Corporation,
is building a municipal facility on
the adjacent one acre to house the
Ajax detachment of the Durham
Regional Police and fund a reno-
vation to the St. Andrew's
Community Centre. The support
of the entire council and town
staff and encouragement of the
community in responding to a
need makes a project like
Westwood Manor happen.
One final important point.

To the editor:
One recent night, I decided
to take my dog with me to
watch a baseball game in Ajax.
There were other dogs on leash-
es at the park. My dog is a
Bichon Frise and he was also on
a leash.
I noticed a Shar-
pei dog that was
much bigger than
mine and I kept my
dog a safe distance
away as a precaution.
Later on, the owner
of the Shar-pei handed the dog
to her friend's small child. The
dog literally pulled the boy
around the park. Suddenly the
dog broke away from the boy
and, totally unprovoked,
attacked my dog brutally. Two
nearby baseball players were
able to pull the dogs apart but
not before my dog was shaken
up wildly and suffered bites to
his neck that began to bleed
immediately.
The attack by this dog was
violent, senseless and unneces-
sary. Upon approaching the
owner, my husband asked if the
dog had had its shots, etc.
Another lady curtly informed
us, "He's not a pit bull, you
know." My husband said he was
aware of that, but that a dog
with such a temperament should
never be given to a small child
to walk.
The owner did not ask if my
dog was okay and took no
responsibility for the actions of
her dog. She smirked as my
husband spoke to her and
replied, "Hmmm, he's never
done that before."
She'd probably smirk
today if she knew it
meant a trip to the
veterinarian this
morning, along with
a needle, some pills
and a good -size bill
for services.
Being a dog owner entails a
certain responsibility for the
actions and behavior of your
dog. It was apparent to me that
this particular owner lacked any
sense of responsibility for this
incident. They say a dog is only
as good as its owner. It would
appear that this dog will always
disregard such instances.
I guess this time we were
"lucky". This same dog with a
bandana around its neck could
decide upon a whim to attack
another day. Perhaps the next
victim may be a small, innocent
child instead of an innocent
dog. It would not surprise me to
hear the same apathetic reply
echoed, "Hmmm, my dog's
never done that before!" What a
scary thought indeed.

IN THE MATTER OF THE ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT, R.S.O. 1980, C. 337.
And in the matter of the lands and premises at Lot 1, South Part, Concession 3,
Ajax, Ontario.
NOTICE OF INTENTION TO AMEND THE DESIGNATION
WHEREAS the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Ajax passed By-law
#114-82 on August 16, 1982 to designate Maplehurst being Lot 1, South Part,
Concession 3, Ajax, Ontario as being a property of Architectural and or
historical value or interest under part for the Heritage Act, 1980 R.S.O. Chapter
337 as amended.
AND WHEREAS it is now deemed expedient to amend the reasons for
designation.
NOW THEREFORE take notice that the Council of the Corporation of the Town of
Ajax intends to amend the designation of the properly located at Lot 1, South Part,
Concession 3, (Maplehurst) under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, 1980, R.S.O.
337 as amended.
Municipal Address: Lot 1, South Part, Concession 3, Town of Ajax.
REASON FOR DESIGNATION
The reasons for designation are hereby amended to include the veranda on the
east side of flys house. The veranda is dearly visible in an early photograph of
the subject building -
Any person may within 30 days of the first publication of this notice send by
registered mail to the Clerk of the Town of Ajax, notice of his or her objection to the
proposed amendment to the designation together with a statement of the reasons
for the objection with relevant facts. If such a notice of objection is received, the
Council of the Corporation of the Town of Ajax will refer the matter to the
CONSERVATION REVIEW BOARD for Hearing.
The last day for filling objections will be August 23, 1991.
