To try and prevent a possible
shortage, the Ajax -Pickering branch
of the Red Cross will hold a blood
donor clinic on Tuesday, Aug. 6,
from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at St.
Bernadette's Church parish hall, at
the comer of Harwood Avenue and
Bayly Street, in Ajax.
The target is 300 units.
Mainly because of vacations,
donations at this clinic are usually
low. All blood types are needed.

Police sign new contract
DURHAM - A new contract has
been ratified by members of the
Durham Regional Police
Association.
The association which repre-
sents 566 members up to the rank
of staff sergeant had been without a
contract since Jan. 1.

That brings the salary of a first
class constable (one with three
years experience) to $50,020.
Effective Aug. 1 a constable
with 10 years service who has qual-
ified for a promotion will receive
an additional two per cent increase
bringing the salary to $51,020.
Constable Dale Allan, president
of the association, says there were
also improvements in shift differ-
ential, dental plan, maternity leave
and long-term disability.
Allan says 81 per cent of the
voting membership approved the
new one-year contract.

Saturday until Aug. 31. The course is
for youths 11 years and up and the

ation department will have

'JDS controlling interest sold
PICKERING - Mississauga den-
tist Jack Tse has bought controlling
interest in JDS Investments.
The deal was closed early Friday
morning when Tse bought all shares
in the company owned by lack
Israeli, the co-founder of JDS.
Tse paid $6 million for 73.3 per
cent of JDS common shares, says
Laurence Caroe, a lawyer represent-
ing Tse.
JDS owns the Pickering Town
*Centre and the Metro East Trade
Centre, along with four other shop-
ping malls in the Toronto area. The
company is also a major investor in
the Canada's Wonderland amuse-
ment park north of Toronto.
The company, however, has been
in a financial bind in the past year.
According to published reports, the
company has outstanding mortgage
and note repayments of almost $1
billion which have to he paid off by
early 1992.
Tse has set up JSJ Equity
Holdings Limited and, operationally
speaking, Caroe says there will be
"no difference than the previous situ-
ation."
Caroe says, `"Tse will be involved
in the management. It's a change of
chief executive officers."
Caroe won't divulge who is help-
ing finance Tse, saying "it's not pub-
lic information yet as to how he's
financed."
Tse assumes all the debts JDS
had, but Caroe won't comment on
the situation.
Caroe says, "Nothing has
changed with any other share hold-
ers, including Bramalea Limited."
Bramalea owns 18 per cent of JDS.
McColm on trek for diabetes
AJAX-PICKERING - A blind
man hoping to raise $I million for
diabetes is expected to walk through
the area Tuesday or Wednesday.
Ken McColm is walking across
Canada to raise money for diabetes,
a disease that struck him at the age
of five.
McColm, 30, a New Brunswick
United Way benefit
resident, started his cross-country
trek titled the Incredible Journey in
Newfoundland March 20.
It's expected to take him until
November to finish walking through
Ontario. When he's finished his
8,000 kilometre Incredible Journey,
McColm's next ambition is to climb
Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Golf tourney postponed
AJAX-PICKERING -
Whoa cowboys! The great
western mixed golf tourna-
ment scheduled to take place
Friday, Aug. 9 has been post-
poned until Friday, Sept. 27.
That gives duffers a few
more weeks to sign up for the
event, which is being held in
support of the United Way of
Ajax -Pickering.
The cost is $100 for 18 holes
of golf, as well as a dinner and
dance. For $50, you can enjoy
the dinner and dance, which
features a live western band.
The tournament will be
held at Fawn Brook Golf
Club, which is located at
Salem and Taunton Roads.
There'll be a prize for best
western outfit.

The following is a copy of a letter
to Liz Bowes, recreation program
superintendent for Pickering's com-
munit} services and facilities depart-
ment.
Dear Liz Bowes:
We are coming to the end of what
I believe is the first month-long/two-
times-a-week Aqua -Fit course
scheduled by the town of Pickering.
As a participant may I say a heartfelt
thank you and congratulate you on
this particular series.
The Aqua -Fit concept of exercis-
ing is the best thing since sliced
bread for anyone suffering with
spine and/or joint problems and for
whom formal exercise programs are
impossible. I am one of those people
and cannot speak highly enough of
Aqua -Ft's potential as a fitness tool.
The Aqua -Fit instructors, Cathy
and her stand-in Heather, are excel-
lent, dedicated, understanding, sup-
portive and most important, they are
fun. Moans and groans are always
accompanied by smiles and laughs

To the editor:
The following is an open letter
to mayor Witty.
Dear Mr. Mayor:
I don't doubt that as mayor you
have a legal right to make a public
nuisance of yourself, as you have
done recently by erecting a NO L' -
TURN sign at the break in the
median strip at Harwood Avenue
and Clements Road, in order to
make it as difficult as possible for
the sick and elderly to visit the
Ajax Medical Arts Building.
I would point out, however, that
on Kingston Road in Scarborough
a median strip runs from
Beechgrove Avenue to St. Clair
Avenue, a distance of many miles
on a much more heavily used road
than Harwood Avenue. In that
entire distance U-turns are allowed
at all breaks in the median strip,
otherwise it would be impossible to
gain access to, or leave, hundreds
of premises including churches and
convenience stores. Only this week
I followed a police car making a U-
turn around the median strip.

The Aqua -Ft pool guard for July,
Christina, has brought her own brand
of humor to the proceedings. If we
haven't heard the instructor's direc-
tions clearly - and the instructor is
not merely telling, they are in the
water doing the movements - there's
Christina the lifeguard, flutter -board
and whistle at the ready, showing us
from the side of the pool how she
thinks they arc done!
The Aqua -Fit summer location at
Dunbarton Pool has proved an excel-
lent choice, going from the atten-
dance record - the most consistently
high of any of the Aqua -Fit courses I
have previously taken at the complex
pool. I am looking forward to the
August session feeling sure it will be
equally successful.
I am, though, very disappointed
that there are again only two evening
Aqua -Fit sessions being offered in
Pickering's fall and winter calendar,
with none at Dunbarton pool, while
there are six day -time choices
(which include the new, much pro-
claimed, deep water session), four qj
them being mid-morning'. How o:.
earth are we, the taxpayers, expected
to be out there working to pay
Pickering's ever-increasing taxes and
still be available for a mid-morning
session at the complex pool?
That grumble aside, thank you
again for bridging the summer "gap"
with the two month-long Aqua -Fit
courses. Greatly appreciated.

AJAX - The Ajax Warriors'
Eastern Eavestroughing under -eight
select soccer team captured the
championship at the Whitby
Iroquois Park July 27 and 28.
In the final game, Ajax hooked
up with the host Whitby side. Ajax
and Whitby had met once before, in
the Peterborough indoor tourna-
ment. At that time, Ajax narrowly
defeated Whitby 4-3.
At the Whitby tourney, the host
squad jumped into the early lead.
However, the Warriors responded
with a goal of their own by Ryoma
Ito to end the scoring in the first
half.
The Ajax selects came to life in
the second half with two unan-
swered goals by J.D. Murphy and
John Reid. The lead stood up to the
end with Ajax winning 3-1.
Ajax advanced to the final with a
well-earned 2-1 overtime win over
the Agincourt selects in the semi-
final game.
At the end of regulation play, the
two teams were knotted at 1-1.
Warriors' Ryoma Ito scored in the
second period of overtime to give
Ajax the victory over Agincourt and
a spot in the finals. Ajax's first goal
was also scored by Ito.
Ajax started off the preliminary
round of play with a convincing 10-
I win over Scarborough Malvern.
Scoring for Ajax were Stuart
Turpin, Darrin Brown, Ryoma Ito
and John Reid with two goals
apiece. Single goals were recorded
by David Ufford and Kirk Reid.

game, the Warriors played to a
scoreless draw with a determined
team from West Rouge.
The Whitby tournament victory
gives the Ajax squad a total of four
tournament championships in the
five they have entered this year.
Ajax was eliminated in the semi-
finals of one other tourney.
The Ajax Warriors' Eastern
Eavestroughing under -eight selects
will play in the Durham Cup
Tournament in Seugog Aug. 17 and
18.
NHL netminder to instruct
goalie clinic at complex
PICKERING - Budding pro goaltenders can learn from the real
thing at an upcoming goalie school run by Pickering resident and
New York Islanders netminder Glenn Healy.
The goalie school will be run at the Pickering Recreation
Complex, Aug. 6 to 8, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. all three days.
Best of all, it's free to all rep and house league goaltenders in
Pickering.
The town is supplying the ice and Healy will supply his time and
effort to teaching the school. The veteran NHL goaltender played
his minor hockey in the Pickering Hockey Association.
Healy says during his NHL career he has been fortunate enough
to receive instruction by such notables as Billy Smith and Ed
Giacomin.

Ajax Tmball selects finalists at Clarkson tourney
AJAX - The Ajax Spartans
Square Boy Pizza T -ball select
team ended up as gold division
finalists at the annual Clarkson T
Ball Tournament on the weekend.
The local boys were beaten 27-
15 by the host Clarkson Braves in
the championship game. A seven -
run deficit after the first inning
was too much for the Ajax squad
to overcome.
The Spartans were defeated by
the same Clarkson Braves by the
same 27-15 score in their first
game of the tournament on
Saturday. Drew Knox' three -run
homer was the offensive feature
of the contest. Adam Kelly, Ian
Wight and Chris Breukes played
fine games in the outfield.
The Ajacians qualified for the
`A' division playoffs by defeating
Hamilton Inch Park 24-21.
Matthew Puopolo, Drew Knox,
Kevin Brown and Scott Robinson
had three -run home runs. Adam
Cunliffe made
an incredible
seven fly ball
put-outs in left
field.
On Sunday
morning,
Brampton —
the eventual
grand champi-
ons —
knocked the T
ball Spartans
into the gold division by a 27-15
score. Matthew Larabie played a
fine game at his pitching position
and Axle Riley made his usual
super plays at shortstop. Neil
McBride led the offensive attack
with four hits.
The Ajax boys qualified for
the Gold Division championship
with a come -from -behind defeat
of London Oakridge 26-25 in
extra innings. Pitcher Kip
Linton's ground ball pick up and
accurate throw on the last batter
prevented the tieing and game -
winning runs from scoring.
Scott Robinson was a one-man
wrecking crew at the bat with
three grand slam home runs,
accounting for 12 of the Ajax
runs.
Overall, the the Ajax squad
had a fine weekend of T ball and
hope they can put this experience
into use in their future tourna-
ments.
