Firefighters were called to the abandoned home, on the Fourth Concession one mile west of Brock Road, at about 8 pm. by an alert neighbor. "It's definitely suspicious," says Pickering fire chief Steve Stewart. There's no way we can track any- thing down. People go by there so often on dirt bikes." The house, located on provincial- ly -owned Seaton land, is estimated to be over 100 years old, says Stewart. He speculates that the town's Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC) probably intended to pre- serve it as it was boarded up. The fire started in a shed at the rear of the house and firefighters were able to "minimize the dam- age," says Stewart. "You can't put an estimate on (the damages), being historical. It's that belief that has Ajax trustee Susan Dulny upset as the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board sets out to replace former Ajax trustee Sally Longo. (A 13 -year veteran of the board, Longo recently resigned because she no longer lives in Durham.) "As an Ajax trustee, I strongly uphold that the best candidate must be from Ajax," Dulny argues. "How can you understand the whole community if you don't live there?" Longo agrees. "Ajax is best served (by) a resident who lives and is highly visible in the town and church," she says. The board's English Language Section, made up of 15 trustees, conducted about 20 interviews earlier this week, with some can- didates from as far away as Port Perry, Uxbridge and Beaverton. While those candidates might make good representatives in their own communities, says Dulny, they all reside in areas which are long distance from .Ajax. "Trustees spend a good amount of time on the phone," she says. "Who's going to pay for those calls?" As well, Dulny is frustrated by candidates who don't adhere strongly to Catholic beliefs, such as abortion, chastity and sexual respon- sibility among students. If you're going to run as a Catholic trustee, you must take a very strong stand on Catholicity." she explains. "Under no circum- stances can those things be compromised. You better be prepared to make a judgement call, whether it's popular or not." The successful candidate will be announced at an English Language Section meeting Wednesday, June 5. DURHAM Pat Brown to seek Ajax Ward 5 seat AJAX - Pat Brown is running for the Ward 5 Ajax council seat. President of the Ajax Municipal Housing Corporation, Brown sought the Ward 4 position last year when the seat became vacant. Council filled the vacancy with Roger Anderson. The Ward 5 seat is held by Dodie Trempe who hasn't yet announced her electoral inten- tions. John Beeton, a Clements Road East resident, announced in April his intention to seek the posi- Pat Brown tion. The municipal election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 12. Brown and her husband Jack have lived in Ajax since 1958 and have lived on Bryant Road, in Ward 5, since 1972. The couple has two sons. She's been a controller with Ajax Magnethermic Canada Ltd. since 1970. Volunteer groups she's been involved include the United Way, Ajax Citizens Together (ACT) and Big Brothers. She was a founding member of Pickering -Ajax Citizens Together (PACT) for the Environment. Major issues in Ward 5 include a proposed Durham region water sup- ply plant on the Ajax lakefront inside the ward, possible develop- ment at the mouth of Carruthers Creek, a proposal for four condo- minium buildings at the foot of Harwood Avenue, and the fight over whether sewers should be installed in the Pickering Beach area. Brown says confronting the issues poses "an exciting challenge" and she believes her financial expe- rience and knowledge of the plan- ning and development process are assets that would help her meet that challenge. •1' Come and join the Ajax Lions and Lioness celebrate the opening of their new Den at 500 Clements Ave. (west of Westney Rd.) on Saturday, June 8 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p:m. I'm concerned about issues that affect us all, including development of the waterfront." Co-op homes a real neighborhood' To the editor: I would like to respond to the article published in your paper on Friday, May 10 1991. "Non profit homes bring crime, - say Steeple Hill people. There are two points I would like to address, the first being ""Falling real estate prices will result if non-profit town homes are built." Where are there actual statistics to prove that build- ing a non-profit development, regardless of the program it's under, has directly effected the price of real estate. What effects the price is the economy, nothing more. If it is a boom as we have experienced in the 80s the prices escalate. It doesn't really matter where you are located across Canada, it's the same thing. It's what the economy states in the location you are in and the amenities you have to offer that are major factors. "Increased crime rate" - this will happen in any area where you increase the population regardless of the type of housing that's there. Is it recorded that only people who live in non-profit homes are crimi- nals? Criminals don't care where they live, you will find them in well-to-do areas that have had what society stipulates they must have, should have, because of status quo, not because of where and what they call home. No one is exempt from commit- ting a crime. If where people lived was a major factor in who commits crimes then our authorities would have an easy time in controlling crime. We all realize that is just a dream, so let's face reality, as well as an important fact of life - every- one needs a home. The quote by Sonya Chang that "Middle income and lower income don't mix" is way off base. It's not the income but "attitudes that don't mix". She states her opposition is shared by the vast majority of her neighbors. Does she really know her neighbors, other then a passing hello. If she lives on a street of 75 homes could she be sure her neigh- bor 75 homes away knows who she is. I wonder, is it really a communi- ty or just a street that they reside on? Non-profit homes serve young couples, old couples, single parents male and female, white collar pro- fessional just starting out, blue col- lar workers that provide service we all need whether it be the plumber or gas station attendant, young fam- ilies trying to save enough to maybe buy their own home or just provide the little extras in life for those close to them. Should we rob them of this because our mind set is that only welfare cases reside in non-profit homes. I live in a co-op, the first in Pickering, and I know my neigh- bors. 1 like coming home to my community as I can be me. 1 know I'm safe and have a warm feeling of belonging. I don't have to worry. My children are exposed to differ- ent people on all levels. I would like to invite her and her concerned neighbors to visit us and see what a community is all about. We look after what we have, we want nothing different, that's what non-profit is all about. No one is making a profit and we are able to live in a community we can call home. Not every one can buy their own Womenm'* RotaC0333___• benefit 7o the editor: Service clubs have long been the preserve of the male species, gener- ally speaking. And many still are. The Lions and the Kinsmen Clubs come to mind as still having only men on their roster. And if you are a close observer you would note that nearly all the prominent commis- sions have a man as chairman or president. This may be the closest we get but at least we are given a /! chance. We have the same pride of ownership of our space as they do, we plant our flowers, cut our grass and shovel the snow not just for ourselves but those neighbors that we have that we know can't! We share our ideas, dreams and exper- tise with each other no matter what they are, we all grow, we want the same things as they do but are not in the same position, so we don't hold it against them. So why judge those who live in non-profit homes without knowing what it's all about. Be thankful that they are there just in case you or someone close to you may need it one day for whatever reason. Sylvia Sampson, Director at Duf ms Dreek Co-op, Pickering albeit at a snail's pace, but changing nonetheless. About three years ago the gov- erning body of all Rotary Clubs worldwide, Rotary International of Evanston, Illinois, following a U.S. court decision, made changes in the rules governing membership. They proposed that, in keeping with the court decision, women be permitted to become Rotarians. A majority of Rotary Clubs around the world reacted with shock and dismay. What! they said, women in Rotary? We don't ask to join their organiza- tions! In fact they wouldn't have us! So why should we, a men's club, have to accept women? And the Proposal was vigorously opposed by most clubs. But Rotary International had no choice but to follow the court's decision. They enacted legis- lation making it mandatory to accept females who make applica- tion to join a club - If they meet the criteria of membership. The motto of Rotary is "Service Above Self" they said, and who would know more about serving than working wives, mothers, and homemakers. Rotarians are business people from all walks of life, and women have proved their ability from news reporters to financial analysts. Grudgingly at first the individual clubs accepted ladies as members. It began in California (almost every- thing good or bad originates in CA.) and spread to other states before reaching Canada. In Durham region, among the first to become a member was Marg Webber of the Whitby Rotary Club. Marg had been their faithful piano player for the anthem and the sing-alongs for the past 18 years. The Whitby club honored Marg for her devotion by making her an honorary Rotarian. She is a Rotarian piano player now. Soon the other clubs in the fistrict followed suit. Pickering had also included a female member, and Oshawa soon had women Rotarians, and the ladies began to make their appear- ance in all the Rotary clubs. Not all the male members would agree, but the ladies add a bit of class to the club. And they take their due share of the work whether it be selling tickets to raise funds, helping with Rotary bingos, or chairing a corn - mince. Ajax Rotary now hat throa Rotarians from the gender sex, one of whom is almost a two-year veter- an, and two recent inductees. Val ) Marshall has been a member for almost two years, and has shown her ability to carry out any job she is assigned. Her first success was the organization of Ajax Rotary's Fortieth Anniversary. Gloria Sharples, a new member, is manager of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Pickering Village. Carolyn B'bew is a recent inductee and holds the position of account Canadian pe mperiaa Bank at Of Commerce in Ajax. Both have proven capabilities and will surely add to the potential of Ajax Rotary. Without doubt, all Rotary Clubs around the world will benefit from the admission of women to Rotary. By estimating operating expenses each November, the board would be in a better position to add items to the budget, rather than cut, as it did this year, believes Gary Lauriault, French language sector trustee for Ajax, Pickering and Uxbridge. (The Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board shelved a Grades 7 and 8 industrial arts and family studies program and cut a Grade 3 learn -to -swim pro- gram and a swim therapy program from its 1991 budget, passed Apr. 22. All cuts are effective September.) "Me current process of preparing and approving the estimates is both frustrating and inefficient," accord- ing to Lauriault. "By the time the board... prepares its estimates, the better part of the fiscal year has either passed or is fully committed." This means that the board can make spending changes in just the last four months of the fiscal year. At least one trustee supported the idea at a recent board meeting. "I support the concept," Pickering trustee Kevin Ashe told board mem- bers. "I'd like to prioritize, instead of cut this and that." The motion will be reviewed by the personnel and finance commit- tee, which has been asked to report its findings to the board by October.
