Cut in teachers for gifted kids By LINDA WHITE Education Reporter DURHAM - The separate school board's enrichment Program for gifted children will see a cru in staffing next Yew. despite strong opposition from a member of its spe- cial education advisory committee. According to a five-year pian adopted by the board last year, the three teachers now on staff for exceptional children would be reduced to one consultant this September. The purpose of those teachers was to ease the transition from segregated education to the regular class- room for gifted children. But Judy Amenta, parent of two exceptional children attending Catholic schools and representative of the Association for Bright and Gifted Children, believes two of those teachers should be kept on staff for one more Yew - "Not enough time has been given for the programs to be established well enough in schools," she told trustees before they voted on the issue. Further, reducing the number of resource teachers for enrichment would "put extra weight on the academic resource teacher, who already has a heavy, busy caseload." she arSued. Once those programs are estab- lisbed, Amenta agrees that the con- subw proposed by the board would be sufficient. Pickering trustee Mary Zexhino and Oshawa trustee Fred Janes sup- ported the committee's recommen- dation to retain two teachers. "I think we don't wan to provide minimal services," said Zeccbino. "Vie want to provide adequate ser- vices," But few trustees agreed. "K we are going to cat $48,000 for a learn - to -swim program which affects hun- dred: of students, we sbouid cut the $50.000 (for about 175 gifted stu- dents)," argued Oshawa trustee and vice-chairman Joe Corey. Trustees approved a motion that recommends to the ministry of edu- cation ducation that teacher -certification pro- grams include special education training for all teachers. :...-.,...ww..is ..,::ssss. 1dw•r+l►AMAA'.ia.OAAAA photos by Ron Pletroniro Rowe, however, would prefer a group called him before start- ing so duplication can be avoid- ed. During the food drives, items collected in Durham region are taken to a warehouse in Toronto to be sorted. Then, local charities phone the warehouse for food when needed. Some fear that Durham isn't getting back what itdonated. However, Derek Sweeney, direc- tor of volunteers for the Daily Bread Food Bank, says that's not true. Sweeney says the public donates 30 per cent of food that's distribut- ed. The remaining 70 per cent comes from the food industry. Therefore, says Sweeney, Durham gets back 70 per cent more food than its residents donated. Also, by having all donated food sorted at one warehouse, a greater variety of goods will be distributed, says Sweeney. If pork and beans were on sale in Durham region during food collec- tion time, a lot of pork and beans would likely be donated but perhaps no baby food, explains Sweeney. By sorting all the donated food at one location, a variety of items can be sent back to the municipality. They made their suggestions in sub- missions to the News Advertiser's writing contest. We asked the younger generation "What can we do in Ajax and Pickering to protect the envi- ronment?" Below are some of their submissions: If we could save Pickering we could call the government and tell them that we don't want any more garbage in our city. We shouldn't use any moe candy wrappers or plastic bag wrappers or have any more garbage. Here is a poem: Come out, come out and pick up garbage too So come along and join us And if you do Everyone will kwe you! And that my poem - Mona Bayoumi, Grade two, Highbush My mom got mad at the government and sent a letter to three people. Elizabeth McGee, Grade two, Highbush At my school a certain number of kids stay for lunch. These students could be ask to bring garbageless lunches. By this I mean using tupperware contain- ers that they could bring back and forth and reuse. They could also take a drink in a thermos. For the kids who bring recycle lunches we could set up a system and have recycle monitors. These monitors could collect cans and bottles and bring them home for their pick up. we might need "mother" vol- unteers to help in bringing recyclable cans and bottles home. Meaghan O'Hara, Grade 4, St. James At Brownies we picked up garbage. At our school and home I pick up garbage when I see it. You should pick up garbage where you are. Do you? Yes or no. I recycled at Brownies too we found a lot of garbage. There was a whole bag of garbage we reused the bag. Kristen M, Grade 2, Highbush To help the envi- ronmertt we must put signs up saying "If you put garbage here you will half to pay lots of money." You can also phone the mayor to help you to fix the environment. You can tell him you are sick and tired of people throwing garbage on the ground and in our dumps. Apr. 28, is the first day of Environmental Affairs Week in the town and it is going to be a busy day. The Ajax Waterfront Advisory Committee and members of the 5th Ajax Cub pack will start the day cleaning the lakefront. From 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., members of the groups will collect litter. The Cubs will gather garbage around the Rotary Park area, including the parking lot and building. Members of the advisory committee will walk along the entire water- front, picking up litter. The event will be held rain or shine and the public is welcome to join. Students from Pickering High School will hold a car wash, from 10 a.m. to 4 pm., at the Petro Canada station on Harwood Avenue, north of Highway 401. The stu- dents will be using environmentally -friend- ly cleaning products. The cost is $4 a car and proceeds will be donated to the World Wildlife Fund to save endangered species in Canada and the rain forests. A free composting demonstration wi11 be conducted by the Ajax Citizens for the Environment (ACE) in Kinsmen Park, on Clover Ridge Drive East, Ajax, from 2 p.m. to4pm. For more on the demonstration, call Sherry Brown at 428-3879. Many other community groups have activities planned throughout the week. If an individual, a group, school or church want to join in and help during the week, call Joel Rowe, of the Ajax parks and recre- ation department, at 683-3748 and he will give a group an area to clean. Groups can clean a park, greenbelt or water course. Materials, such as garbage bags and gloves, will be provided. Tree -growing kit raises funds to preserve our endangered spaces Celebrate spring by growing a tree — and making sure that our precious wilder- ness spaces will be preserved for future generations! A cross-country campaign has been launched to raise funds and inform Canadians about an important initiative to protect our rapidly -vanishing wilderness. In partnership with the World Wildlife Fund, over 250,000 tree -growing kits will be available for $2.88 at Consumers Distributing stores across Canada. For each kit purchased, the WWF's Endangered OVER 250 Spaces campaign will receive 50 cents. This campaign has as its goal the establish- ment of a network of protected wilderness areas across our country by the year 2000. The Tree Growing Kit contains every- thing needed to grow a sturdy Red Pine — a species that will thrive in every climate in Canada. Information on the WWF and the Endangered Spaces campaign is includ- ed with every kit, and new 'tree parents' are encouraged to contact the organization and join in the effort to protect our wilder- ness. 9355 Kingston Rd (Hwy. 2 at Uverpool Rd.) Reduce the high cost of your electric bill, turn off lights and turn down the heat if you will. Reduce the amount you use you car, go by bike or take a hike if you're not going far. Recycle your bottles and tin cans, so we don't fill up our lands. Recycle peelings, scraps and leaves, it will make rich soil for your garden plants and trees. Recycle newspapers it makes good sense, or else your garbage dumps will be immense. Reuse small clothes for younger siblings, have a garage sale and sell your used things. Reuse all your plastic bags, ripped and old clothes use them as rags. Reuse, Reduce, Recycle we must, if we don't our Environment will Bust. By Andrew Dybenko Sir John A. MacDonald Grade 4 Andrew Dybenko Kathryn Bunyan A Ravaged Planet The ache of a stomach after drinking water from the kitchen tap, the stinging sensation of a big breath of air travelling through the nostrils of your nose, watching the lungs of our planet being chopped down, and the fear of going outside into the deadly sun without proper protection. Is this our bleak future? No! It is our horrify- ing present. As a high-school student in the town of Pickering I can honestly say that I am proud of the implementation of recycling programs in the community and the school system. I am also overjoyed at the fact that Pickering and Ajax have made composters available to the residents of the community. Pickering and Ajax have done a lot to help the environment but it is only the first step in the marathon ahead of us to help save the only planet capable of supporting human life as we know it. Many schools have programs within them to recycle pop cans and paper, but a crucial part of these educational institutions have been ignored, the school cafeterias. My school cafe still uses styrofoam cups! School cafes worry about efficiently feed- ing us, but they should stop and think whether they are helping us or contributing to the problem which can harm future gen- erations of this planet. Pickering and Ajax should also investi- gate the implementation of point and mptor oil recycling programs. The oil from one oil change can pollute one million gallons of water. h is important to keep it from get- ting into our rivers and lakes, besides recy- cled oil can be used by industrial compa- nies. There is a lot that the towns of Pickering and Ajax can do, but the responsibility lies on the shoulders of everybody. Though the children and young adults of this century are not the cause of this problem not only will we have to find the solution, but we will also have to bear the burden of a rav- aged planet. To save this planet we call "home" we need only ONE person... YOU!
