Cut in teachers for gifted kids

Education Reporter
DURHAM - The separate school board's enrichment
Program for gifted children will see a cru in staffing next
Yew. despite strong opposition from a member of its spe-
cial education advisory committee.
According to a five-year pian adopted by the board
last year, the three teachers now on staff for exceptional
children would be reduced to one consultant this
September. The purpose of those teachers was to ease the
transition from segregated education to the regular class-
room for gifted children.
But Judy Amenta, parent of two exceptional children
attending Catholic schools and representative of the
Association for Bright and Gifted Children, believes two
of those teachers should be kept on staff for one more
Yew -
"Not enough time has been given for the programs to
be established well enough in schools," she told trustees
before they voted on the issue.
Further, reducing the number of resource teachers for
enrichment would "put extra weight on the academic
resource teacher, who already has a heavy, busy
caseload." she arSued.
Once those programs are estab-
lisbed, Amenta agrees that the con-
subw proposed by the board would
be sufficient.
Pickering trustee Mary Zexhino
and Oshawa trustee Fred Janes sup-
ported the committee's recommen-
dation to retain two teachers.
"I think we don't wan to provide
minimal services," said Zeccbino.
"Vie want to provide adequate ser-
vices,"
But few trustees agreed. "K we
are going to cat $48,000 for a learn -
to -swim program which affects hun-
dred: of students, we sbouid cut the
$50.000 (for about 175 gifted stu-
dents)," argued Oshawa trustee and
vice-chairman Joe Corey.
Trustees approved a motion that
recommends to the ministry of edu-
cation
ducation that teacher -certification pro-
grams include special education
training for all teachers.

Pickering sighs over signs
PICKERING - Like the song says, everywhere a sign.
Pickering could be clamping down on large, billboard -type signs in the
near future so that, in the words of mayor Wayne Arthurs, they're not "pop-
ping up like mushrooms."
During Monday's executive committee meeting, Arthurs noted there are
numerous pylon signs around Pickering and added that the town has received
an application for another one at a local shopping plaza. Arthurs said the
signs aren't serving the business community.
Council is expected to consider some type of control over billboard signs
at its next meeting.

The South Durham Unit of the Canadian Cancer Call 686-1516.
Society recently began a Living With
Cancer group open to cancer
patients, their family and friends.
The emphasis is on "positive,
practical support", says Andrea
Shaw, president of the unit.
The group has met for a few
months and has about 25 members.
"They're already exchanging phone
numbers. It's been a positive experi-
ence for the ones that have come
ut," says Shaw.
rhe emphasis is `Okay, you have
cancer. How are you coping, what
are you doing? You're having diffi-
culty with your spouse, well, we did
this,'" Shaw says. "We don't want to
get into the negative. We look at pos-
itive reinforcement.
"We stay away from criticisms of
doctors and comparing treatments,
because treatment can be personal,"
4 h says.
The group is run by five coordi-
nators or facilitators. They are
trained in handling the group, having
taken a workshop offered by the can-
cer society. Four of the five are nurs-

None of the rive facilitators have
had cancer, which Shaw says is good
because they're "not as emotionally

The group meets the last Monday

Oath to Queen part of heritage
To the editor:
I am writing you today to dis-
play my disgust at the recent deci-
sion to drop swearing allegiance to
the Queen currently required by the
Metropolitan Toronto Police
Commission.
I am wondering when ordinary
Canadians and Ontarians are going
to stand up and say that they have
had enough. Toronto has the finest
police force in North America and I
am convinced that swearing alle-
giance to our Queen has a great
deal to do with that status. It is
always motivating to be loyal to
something as good as what the
Queen of Canada represents. This
loyalty is part of our Canadian her-
itage and we should all be proud of
it.
The politicians have taken away
from our children the reciting of
The Lord's Prayer in schools and
now Bob Rae wants to start remov-
ing the very important recognition
of the Queen as our figurehead.
Ontario is a leader in many areas
in this country - political, economic
and social - we are not setting
much of an example for the rest of
the country to follow by removing
the Queen from our allegiance cere-
monies. This will set the stage for
the other provinces to follow suit.
I hope that many others will
voice their objections to this very
distasteful provincial move by con-
tacting their local member of
provincial parliament. We must
stand up for what little remains
what is truly Canadian and kee
our law enforcement officers
swearing allegiance to our Queen.
Will the courts be next? Will we be
removing all reference to the Queen
in our courts as well? Once all is
gone, will we be able to restore?

'.Ban the whole works'
To the editor:
So councillor Johnson would like
to see all free newspapers and junk
mail banned. What does he have
against the News Advertiser and that
other Pickering paper that is deliv-
ered door-to-door?
So newspapers makes garbage if
not picked up. So do empty cigarette
packs, chocolate bar and gum wrap-
pers. empty bags of snack food (ie.
potato chips, cheesies, etc.), empty
Pop and beer cans and bottles, take-
out food cartons.
I'm for banning the whole works.
I think we can live without the
above-mentioned. Let's ban all of it,
right along with the News
Advertiser and that other Pickering
paper that is delivered door-to-door.
It is not newspapers that litter my
property, but if I didn't daily pick U*
donations of the aforementioned
articles, the property around my
house would look like the beginning
of the newest Metro dump.
If. indeed, councillor Johnson can
arrange to have free newspapers and
junk mail discontinued, I'll be right
there to make sure that he also bans
the other items that litter my proper-
ty.
Surely councillor Johnson can
spend council time and his own time
worrying about something mor
important. W

I am writing you today to dis-
play my disgust at the recent deci-
sion to drop swearing allegiance to
the Queen currently required by the
Metropolitan Toronto Police
Commission.
I am wondering when ordinary
Canadians and Ontarians are going
to stand up and say that they have
had enough. Toronto has the finest
police force in North America and I
am convinced that swearing alle-
giance to our Queen has a great
deal to do with that status. It is
always motivating to be loyal to
something as good as what the
Queen of Canada represents. This
loyalty is part of our Canadian her-
itage and we should all be proud of
it.
The politicians have taken away
from our children the reciting of
The Lord's Prayer in schools and
now Bob Rae wants to start remov-
ing the very important recognition
of the Queen as our figurehead.
Ontario is a leader in many areas
in this country - political, economic
and social - we are not setting
much of an example for the rest of
the country to follow by removing
the Queen from our allegiance cere-
monies. This will set the stage for
the other provinces to follow suit.
I hope that many others will
voice their objections to this very
distasteful provincial move by con-
tacting their local member of
provincial parliament. We must
stand up for what little remains
what is truly Canadian and kee
our law enforcement officers
swearing allegiance to our Queen.
Will the courts be next? Will we be
removing all reference to the Queen
in our courts as well? Once all is
gone, will we be able to restore?

'.Ban the whole works'
To the editor:
So councillor Johnson would like
to see all free newspapers and junk
mail banned. What does he have
against the News Advertiser and that
other Pickering paper that is deliv-
ered door-to-door?
So newspapers makes garbage if
not picked up. So do empty cigarette
packs, chocolate bar and gum wrap-
pers. empty bags of snack food (ie.
potato chips, cheesies, etc.), empty
Pop and beer cans and bottles, take-
out food cartons.
I'm for banning the whole works.
I think we can live without the
above-mentioned. Let's ban all of it,
right along with the News
Advertiser and that other Pickering
paper that is delivered door-to-door.
It is not newspapers that litter my
property, but if I didn't daily pick U*
donations of the aforementioned
articles, the property around my
house would look like the beginning
of the newest Metro dump.
If. indeed, councillor Johnson can
arrange to have free newspapers and
junk mail discontinued, I'll be right
there to make sure that he also bans
the other items that litter my proper-
ty.
Surely councillor Johnson can
spend council time and his own time
worrying about something mor
important. W

AJAX-PICKERING - Some
local residents are worried that food
they donated to the Daily Bread
Food Bank won't get to local resi-
dents.
During the food drives, items
collected in Durham region are
taken to a warehouse in Toronto to
be sorted. Then, local charities
phone the warehouse for food when
needed. Some fear that Durham
isn't getting back what itdonated.
However, Derek Sweeney, direc-
tor of volunteers for the Daily Bread
Food Bank, says that's not true.
Sweeney says the public donates
30 per cent of food that's distribut-
ed. The remaining 70 per cent
comes from the food industry.
Therefore, says Sweeney,
Durham gets back 70 per cent more
food than its residents donated.
Also, by having all donated food
sorted at one warehouse, a greater
variety of goods will be distributed,
says Sweeney.
If pork and beans were on sale in
Durham region during food collec-
tion time, a lot of pork and beans
would likely be donated but perhaps
no baby food, explains Sweeney.
By sorting all the donated food at
one location, a variety of items can
be sent back to the municipality.
Sweeney assures that, if 20
tonnes of food is collected in
Durham, that food plus an addition-
al 70 per cent returns.

Environmental Technology
Put Your Beliefs to Work
When you choose Environmental Technology as a
career you play an important part in saving our planet.
You will be prepared to face the challenges of the '90's
and beyond to the future.
By now it's clear that the environmental movement is
not just a trend, but a survival strategy. The
government is responding with tougher legislation and
regulation and companies are now assessing their
facilities, manufacturing processes and products from'
an environmental perspective.
You can successfully position yourself in today's
competitive marketplace with an Environmental
Technology Diploma from Durham College.
Currently there are over 3,000 environmental service
and equipment firms across Canada and a Federal
government report estimates that $58 billion will be
spent on pollution control over the next ten years.

Great ideas fromyoungminds to help environment
AJAX-PICKER-
ING - Area young-
sters have many sug-
gestions for ways we
can help the environ-
ment.
They made their
suggestions in sub-
missions to the News
Advertiser's writing
contest.
We asked the
younger generation
"What can we do in
Ajax and Pickering
to protect the envi-
ronment?"
Below are some
of their submissions:
If we could save
Pickering we could
call the government
and tell them that we
don't want any more
garbage in our city.
We shouldn't use
any moe candy
wrappers or plastic
bag wrappers or
have any more
garbage. Here is a
poem:
Come out, come
out and pick up
garbage too
So come along
and join us
And if you do
Everyone will
kwe you!
And that my

My mom got mad
at the government
and sent a letter to
three people. Those
people were the gov-
ernment of Ontario,
Pickering and the
government of
Canada. That will
help to stop the pol-
luting and stop the
taxes from going up.

I hate garbage. What
can we do to stop all
this garbage? Our
land is getting
fi
ruined. We should
pick up all this
garbage and clean up
this mess. Stop cut-
ting down trees. Stop
making new homes.
And keep the land
by recycling, reduc-
ing and reusing.

We don't liake
what Toronto is try-
ing to do to the
Rouge Valley. How
would they feel is we
used their place as a
dump. there are
many complaints
about what Toronto
is trying to do. We
want Toronto to
stop! They can start
to buy recyclable or
reusable things.
Elizabeth

At my school a
certain number of
kids stay for lunch.
These students could
be ask to bring
garbageless lunches.
By this I mean using
tupperware contain-
ers that they could
bring back and forth
and reuse. They
could also take a
drink in a thermos.
For the kids who
bring recycle lunches
we could set up a
system and have
recycle monitors.
These monitors
could collect cans
and bottles and bring
them home for their
pick up. we might
need "mother" vol-
unteers to help in
bringing recyclable
cans and bottles
home.
Meaghan
O'Hara, Grade 4,
St. James
At Brownies we
picked up garbage.
At our school and
home I pick up
garbage when I see
it. You should pick
up garbage where
you are. Do you?
Yes or no. I recycled
at Brownies too we
found a lot of
garbage. There was a
whole bag of
garbage we reused
the bag.
Kristen M,
Grade 2,

To help the envi-
ronmertt we must put
signs up saying "If
you put garbage here
you will half to pay
lots of money." You
can also phone the
mayor to help you to
fix the environment.
You can tell him you
are sick and tired of
people throwing
garbage on the
ground and in our
dumps.

activities planned throughout the week. If
an individual, a group, school or church
want to join in and help during the week,
call Joel Rowe, of the Ajax parks and recre-
ation department, at 683-3748 and he will
give a group an area to clean.
Groups can clean a park, greenbelt or
water course. Materials, such as garbage
bags and gloves, will be provided.
Tree -growing kit raises funds to
preserve our endangered spaces
Celebrate spring by growing a tree —
and making sure that our precious wilder-
ness spaces will be preserved for future
generations!
A cross-country campaign has been
launched to raise funds and inform
Canadians about an important initiative to
protect our rapidly -vanishing wilderness.
In partnership with the World Wildlife
Fund, over 250,000 tree -growing kits will
be available for $2.88 at Consumers
Distributing stores across Canada. For each
kit purchased, the WWF's Endangered
OVER 250
Spaces campaign will receive 50 cents.
This campaign has as its goal the establish-
ment of a network of protected wilderness
areas across our country by the year 2000.
The Tree Growing Kit contains every-
thing needed to grow a sturdy Red Pine —
a species that will thrive in every climate
in Canada. Information on the WWF and
the Endangered Spaces campaign is includ-
ed with every kit, and new 'tree parents'
are encouraged to contact the organization
and join in the effort to protect our wilder-
ness.

Reduce, Recycle, Reuse
Reduce the amount of paper used
please,
this will save money and trees.
Reduce the high cost of your
electric bill,
turn off lights and turn down the
heat if you will.
Reduce the amount you use you
car,
go by bike or take a hike if
you're not going far.
Recycle your bottles and tin
cans,
so we don't fill up our lands.
Recycle peelings, scraps and
leaves, it will
make rich soil for your garden
plants and trees.
Recycle newspapers it makes
good sense,
or else your garbage dumps will
be immense.
Reuse small clothes for younger
siblings,
have a garage sale and sell your
used things.
Reuse all your plastic bags,
ripped and old clothes use them
as rags.
Reuse, Reduce, Recycle we
must, if we don't our
Environment will Bust.

A Ravaged Planet
The ache of a stomach after drinking
water from the kitchen tap, the stinging
sensation of a big breath of air travelling
through the nostrils of your nose, watching
the lungs of our planet being chopped
down, and the fear of going outside into the
deadly sun without proper protection. Is
this our bleak future? No! It is our horrify-
ing present.
As a high-school student in the town of
Pickering I can honestly say that I am
proud of the implementation of recycling
programs in the community and the school
system. I am also overjoyed at the fact that
Pickering and Ajax have made composters
available to the residents of the community.
Pickering and Ajax have done a lot to help
the environment but it is only the first step
in the marathon ahead of us to help save the
only planet capable of supporting human
life as we know it.
Many schools have programs within
them to recycle pop cans and paper, but a
crucial part of these educational institutions
have been ignored, the school cafeterias.
My school cafe still uses styrofoam cups!
School cafes worry about efficiently feed-
ing us, but they should stop and think
whether they are helping us or contributing
to the problem which can harm future gen-
erations of this planet.
Pickering and Ajax should also investi-
gate the implementation of point and mptor
oil recycling programs. The oil from one
oil change can pollute one million gallons
of water. h is important to keep it from get-
ting into our rivers and lakes, besides recy-
cled oil can be used by industrial compa-
nies.
There is a lot that the towns of Pickering
and Ajax can do, but the responsibility lies
on the shoulders of everybody. Though the
children and young adults of this century
are not the cause of this problem not only
will we have to find the solution, but we
will also have to bear the burden of a rav-
aged planet. To save this planet we call
"home" we need only ONE person... YOU!
