- In 1991, Ajacians will use
one service more than one million times.
In fact, for the past few years, rider-
ship on Ajax Transit has increased by 67
per cent annually.
"I'm predicting 1.4 million riders this
year. While ridership on other transit
systems is stagnate, like the TTC
(Toronto Transit Commission), our
growth is phenomenal," says Ajax tran-
sit director Terry Barnett.

In November of last year, a monthly
record was set when 50,800 people used
Ajax Transit.
Servicing GO Transit riders is the
reason for the rise in Ajax Transit rider-
ship, he says. "Let's not kid ourselves,

our increase in ridership is because of

In fact, 45 per cent of the people
boarding the GO train in Ajax use local
transit to get to the station. Ajax has the
highest ratio of all municipalities on GO
Transit train lines of riders using local
transit to connect to GO service.

Making Changes is a group to
help Adult Children of Alcoholics
make changes in their lives by pro-
viding information and support. The

discussion group for you and fellow
parents to share common problems
and get continuing training in the
skills needed to be better parents.
The eight -session study group will

"I'm from the TTC and they're
green with envy over this facility,"
Barnett says. "It has a lot to offer that
others don't have."
In fact, Ajax is the only munici-
pality in Durham region with a build-
ing dedicated to transit use only,
Barnett says. Pickering Transit oper-
ates out of its works yard, Whitby
Transit is contracted out and
Oshawa's bus service is nut out of the
Public Utility Commission facilities.
Barnett began his transit career in
1970 with the TTC. "I've operated
every piece of equipment the TTC
had — buses, trolleys, subways and
coaches," he says.
He left the TTC in 1978 and spent
five years in management consulting.
In 1984, he returned to the TTC and
worked in the transit control centre.
"Everything that happens on the TTC
goes through one room. I operated all
the buttons for the subway system for
two years," he says.
After three years in the transit con-
trol centre, he went to work with
Gray Coach in sales and service. He
organized charters, the airport express
bus and sightseeing tours.
"I planned every convention in
Toronto, including the Shriners and
the Economic Summit," he says. He
also organized charter service for the
Toronto Blue Jays.
Last year, Gray Coach was sold
and Barnett had the chance to return
to the TTC. Instead he came to Ajax.
The move wasn't that extensive,
because he's been a Pickering resi-
dent for 17 years.
His time in transit has taught
Barnett that "you have to be receptive
to the residents and how they would
like the service to run. We have to
respond to residents' requests."
Responding to a resident's request
is easier with Ajax Transit, he says.
"You can't do that at a big bureau-
cracy like the TTC."

Eye physician and surgeon Dr.
Yair Karas will be at the Pickering
Central Library Tuesday, Apr. 16 to
explain procedures he says have
allowed "thousands" of people to see
without contact lenses or glasses.
Karas says the medical procedures,
called Radial Keratotomy (RK) and
Hexagonal Keratotomy (Hex), can
permanently correct near and far-
sightedness and astigmatism.
The seminar is free and will begin
at 7:30 pm.
Not everyone qualifies for the
procedures, so those attending the
seminar should take their glasses or a
copy of their contact lens prescrip-
tion for a screening process.
Karas says he's one of only three
eye surgeons in Toronto, and one of
10 in Canada, performing RK. Karas
says that, of the 1,000 patients who
have the procedure done, 90 per cent
have been able to discard their glass-
es or contact lenses. The remainder
have switched to thinner lenses, he
says.
He notes that the procedure has
become popular with people who
want to enter the police force or the
airline industry.
Karas states that he is a member
of the Royal College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Canada, a Diplomat
of the American Board of
Ophthalmology, a member of the
International Society of Refractive
Surgery, and a consultant at York
County Hospital, Markham-
Stouffville Hospital and Branson
Hospital. He has a private practice in
Richmond Hill.
