-"Stern-ing In Out"orTunin
By John Crowder
Can %ve imagine Howard
Stern becoming Canada's most
hated man. Rolling Stone
magazine called him. "the last
radio star'?" and the US press.
America's most dangerous man.
Call us provincial if you like. but
surely we can find a lot more
dangerous men and women and
for that matter hated men and
women who live in infamy in our
country without haying to fit
Howard Stern with that title. He's
simply a radio personality, who
makes millions of dollars
insulting people who either
haven't fiwured out his schtick or
people w l o take all this radio talk
shote stuff too seriously.
Howard debuted on Q-107
radio Toronto and CHOM in
Montreal and immediately set
about increasing market share for
these two radio stations by calling
the French in France and French
Canadians. "the biggest scumbags
on the planet. He went on to say
that the French in 'Montreal are
"pussies" and are particularih, at
fault for causing the language
problem between English and
French Canada. In typical Stern
fashion, he called for all the
people in Montreal to speak
English only. He garnered the
response it was designed to and
just to ensure that it would
Howard Stern labeled the French
people of Quebec "peckerheads
and pussy -ass jackoffs." For extra
measure he accused the French
people of France of collaborating
with the German occupiers in the
Second World War.
Before you get too excited
about Canadian culture being
eroded by another American
entertainer, consider that the
Howard Stern show is not the first
American entertainment vehicle
accused of stifling Canadian
ambition. In response to this
question being put to him during a
press conference held at Toronto's
Hard Rock Cafe after his show
Howard replied that " other than
hockey players, whores and
William Shatner, you haven't
produced a lot." Stern is so good
at making you loose sight of what
he really is, that he sucks you into
becoming another cast character
in his show. He admits there are a
lot of Canadians who don't want
him to be in Canada because
Canada should somehow remain
pure Canadian. "What's the
difference'? People are people.
why shouldn't Canada have this
program?" Wouldn't you want the
best show available and besides,
would you really be happier
finding a Canadian who could
insult you as well as Howard
does"
Stern's show starts at 6:00
a.m. and finishes whenever he
wants it to. Its syndicated and
broadcast from New York by
Infinity Broadcasting who has
paid more than $ 2 million dollars

be pushing the buttons to improve
CHOM and Q- 107's ratings. "as a
matter of fact, most stations we
go on are usually in the toilet. "No

revenue. Q -107's format has
remained basically unchanged
over the last five years and has
suffered loosing good ratings to
more hip programming found on
other stations. Giving the prime
morning slot to Howard Stern is
designed to win back listeners and
increase advertising revenue all
at the calculated risk of loosing
some existing advertisers.
The largest daily newspaper
in the country pulled its
advertising from Q-107
describing Stern's program as
racist. By championing the anti -
racist cause, the Toronto Star gets
to be the good guy all the while
hiding a real issue of protecting
their own revenue base. The
Howard Stern show will
increasingly attract advertising
dollars to Q-107 and that means
less potential advertising dollars
available to be spent in The
Toronto Star. The Toronto Star

revenue base through their 27 or

isn't acting any, differently than
the Toronto Star. The difference is
that Q107 is not hiding behind a
cause, they are simply providing
themselves with the best program
available, one that would be
successful at attracting advertising
revenue. It's easy not to
sympathize with the Toronto Star.
Howard Stern's humor and
penchant for insulting women,
Jews, blacks, gays. lesbians and
celebrities has earned him approx-
imately $15 million dollars per
year. He is syndicated in approxi-
mately 35 cities throughout the
United States, depending on

The Howard Stern has a cast
of characters anchored by his long
time sidekick Robin Quivers.
Robin does the news, never stops
laughing and has been celibate
since 1990 until recently having
oral sex with her new boyfriend
Tony. Jackie Martling is the shows

Howard Stern show features his
cast throughout the show and
anyone of them may take on a
character for Howard to bring
entertainment to his show.
According to Stern, he is a "disc
jockey. a dope." Howard Stern is
no dope he will push your buttons
and inflame your senses, but keep
in mind, it's a show and nothing
more.
Maybe Howard Stem is right
when he stated "The reason you
guys have put me on the front
page of your newspapers is
because I'm the freshest, wildest
radio host in the world. You've
now been introduced to good
radio."
- We are now in a process of
continually losing jobs to
foreign competition because of
our high cost of living. The
single highest cost of all
families must absorb is the cost
of a home with the artificially
high cost of land. We waste a
great deal of our land producing
food for China while China
develops land for homes and
industry.
China creates jobs by its
land use planning while we lose
jobs by our land use planning.
In Durham Region all
further development is aimed at
the Lakeshore Cities. All the
high cost services will be
installed in these areas and the
cost of paying for these instal-
lations will add that much more
tax burden on us. (Planned
bankruptcy).
The interest costs alone for
Durham Region are projected
to run in the hundreds of
millions of dollars in the coming
years for these expansion
programs. (Planned bank-
ruptcies). At no time were
financial feasibility analysis
prepared.
Meanwhile out taxes are
spent to maintain hundreds of
miles of unused roads in the
Waal (Nuclear Free) areas of the
region. It's obvious we must
revise our land use planning in
order to use the services we
have built before we construct
new ones which will sit idle for
years. Only in this way can we
stop tax increases and look
toward tax reductions.

Restaurant Eats Around Town
Review featuring Massey's
By Dack Bushnell
Massey's a fixture on
Liverpool Road, near
Frenchman's Bay has recently
shed its western period and
returned to a
"contemporary
normal" family
restaurant. This
family
restaurant
offers an
extensive menu
with enough
choices to
satisfy your
appetite. The
kid was with
me again and fortunately this
time, Massey's did have a kids
menu.
You don't have to wonder
why Massey's has been
successful at this location for
so long. Massev's delivers goxxl
food, oo od value and service
with a smile.
We must have arrived at the
restaurant at the right time. As
soon as we got there, the
restaurant filled up quickly.
Catherine our waitress. was
under pressure, but did not
disappoint. The kid was handed
a children's menu and treated to
the same friendly greetings as
the rest of us. The kid was
impressed, even though she
chose from the main menu.
The kid ordered the Caesar
salad and i started with the
house salad. The Caesar was
fresh with plenty of cheese with
no overpowering flavor or after
taste. Imagine a house salad,
fresh crisp and tasty with a
homemade dressing somewhere
between a green goddess and a
herb tsitziki. A terrific surprise
for a salad that comes with your
entree.
No hold up or long wait
for our main course. Catherine
kept checking on us and
ensured that the delivery of our
entree's were comfortably
paced following our appetizers.
The ribs were meaty and
covered in a barbecue sauce that
would not impress or offend.
The kid ordered honey garlic
wings and chicken finger
combo at $ $8.95. Six large
urn mdsw
My guest ordered the Julienne
Salad at $ 8.45. A very large
plate of fresh mixed greens,
topped with strips of roast beef,
chicken and cheese, covered
with just the right amount of
dressing. The kid suggested that
the salad should have come in a
big bowl rather than a plate.
The kid was right. i ordered the
steak and rib combo at $ 13.95.
The steak was ordered medium
well and the ribs with barbecue
sauce. The plate comes with
vegetables and Massey's own
french fries. By now you know
that my veggies get passed off
to my guests for their unbiased
and experienced critique. The
veggies, yellow beans and
asparagus failed the critical test.
They were overcooked and
mushy with little taste left in
'em.
If Massey's doesn't
have the best homemade french
fries, second only to that un-
named fast food giant; then this
writer has yet to discover the
place. My steak was cooked
only slightly more than I would
have expected it, but not
enough to loose the juicy flavor.
meaty wings

sticky fingered
twelve year old.
Chicken fingers
are chicken
fingers, but are
Massey's
different'. They
were indeed
plump and large and served
with a not to inspiring regular
plumb sauce.
Massey's menu
consists of Soups & Salads,
starting with the soup of the day
at $ 1.95 and a selection of eight
salads at no more than $ 8.45.
Appetizers starting with garlic
bread at $ 2.45 to Nachos at
$7.95. Sandwiches, startinL,
with a grilled cheese at $ 3.45 to
a chicken club at $ 7.4
Burgers from $ 5.45 to $ 6.45,
Six pasta selection beginning
with spaghetti for $ 6.95 to a
burgundy beef fettuccine.
Dinner platters including soup
or salad plus vegetables or
potatoes, your choice starting
from $ 7.95 to combos at $
13.95. Fully licensed.
reservations not required.
Our bill came to
$40.00 which included soft
drinks, coffee, three meals and
appetizers. Massey's is family
dining just as its billed. With
good food, good value and
good service, this is a place I'd
have no trouble
recommending.

your hand to release "the flavour and
aroma.
• When making a stir -fry, substitute
frozen oriental style vegetables for fresh
vegetables when you are pressed for time.
• Keep your pantry and freezer well
stocked with frequently used items so you
can make a quick dinner at the last minute.
• Make use of fruits and vegetables in
season; they are usually more flavorful
and a better price.
• To soften hard margarine,
microwave for about 20 seconds.
• Grease casserole dishes with
margarine or cooking oil for a quicker and
easier clean up. _

• Select recipes that best fit the
available time. Before beginning a recipe,
read it carefully and assemble ingredients
and equipment beforehand.
• Try doubling recipes for soups,
casseroles, stews and baked pasta dishes
so you can freeze half and use for dinner
on a night when you don't have the time to
cook. Defrost in the refrigerator the night
before. When baking cookies, prepare a
double batch and freeze half. Cookies will
keep for up to 2 weeks in the freezer.
• When doubling a recipe, increase
spices and herbs by 1-1/2 times, taste,
then add more if necessary. In most
recipes, 1-1/2 times the seasoning will be
sufficient to provide desired flavour.

Laminate A New Option for the Bathroom
Flooring:
(NC) -Are your feet tired of
hitting cold ceramic when you
step out of the shower? Do you
dislike the look of vinyl in your
bathroom? Is wood simply not
ppractical in a room with high
humidity?
Well, with Pergo" laminate
flooring, consumers can enjoy the
rich look of wood along with the
durability to stand up to everyday
bathroom moisture.
The latest home -decorating
trend to hit this side of the
Atlantic, high Pressure melamine
laminate flooring Is an extremely
durable material in which colors
and designs can he varied and
combined almost infinitely.
"Now people have a new
flooring option for their
bathroom," says Anne West, vice
president of residential marketing
for Perstorp Flooring. "Because
Pero has a high pressure
laminate surface and moisture -
resistant wood -based core, it can
withstand bathroom spills and
splashes."
The installation of Pergo in
the bathroom has to be done
according to the special
It
instructions for bathroom instal-
lation. (Please note. Perstorp
Flooring does not recommend
installing Pergo in a bathroom
with a drain in the floor.)
First, it is important to
remember to install Pergo as you
would in any other room, leaving
a 1/4 inch expansion space around
the perimeter of the room, and
also 1/4 inch expansion space
around the drain collar where the
toilet is mounted.
Second, once the Pergo
planks are installed, fill the 1/4
Inch expansion spaces with Pergo
sealant or a sealant of 100 percent
silicone.
Lastly, when replacing the
wallbase or quarter round, place a
bead of sealant on the bottom
edge of the molding so a water
proof seal is created between the
molding and the Per&o plank.
"When Pergo Is Installed
properly, using enough glue to
seal the surface joints, splashed
or temporary standing water on
the surface is not a problem."
West adds. "Pergo has a wood -
based core, so you do not want
water to penetrate into it. Using

Keeping Safe!
(NC) -Along with coloured leaves
and cooler temperatures. October brings
Fire Prevention Week to Canadians, from
the 6th to the 12th. Although Fire Safety
is a year round activity, during this week
families are encouraged to recommit
themselves to fire prevention.
The following tips and lessons are
from Learn Not to Bum an educational
fire safety program funded by the
Canadian Tire Child Protection
Foundation, that teaches children 22
lifesaving behaviours.
Stop. Drop And Roll!
Explain to your children what they
should do if their clothing catches on.
The lesson is simple:
• STOP where you are
DROP to the ground
• ROLL over and over again until
the flames are extinguished.
Plan your es ape!
A home escape plan is a plan to get

Hear are the easy steps to follow to make
your home escape plan:
• Get the family together and draw
simple floor plan of your home
• Plan two ways out of each
bedroom. The first way should be the
door.
• Make sure all windows can be
easily opened. In a two-storey home. plan
your escape through a window onto a
roof .
• Choose a meeting place outside the
home and mark it on the plan.. Practice
your escape plan. Talking about your
escape plan is not enough, you must
practice at least twice a year.
Make sure your children learn good
fire safety habits. Contact your local fire

Herongate Dinner Theatre Review
by Aaron Bernardo
I recently discovered one of the
areas best kept secrets in a
lovely and relaxed dinner /
theatre on the outskirts of
Pickering. The Herongate
Bam Theatre makes for an
enjoyable evening of food
and live entertainment with
a combination of live theatre
and an al you can eat buffet
including salad, fish, roast
beef, chicken, potatoes, as
well as an impressive and
tempting collection of
desserts.
The entertainment
included a mixture of jokes and
song by Rick Kerr, who is also the
director of the current play
"Marriage is Murder". Rick, along
with his guitar and bag of props,
did his best to keep the audience
tapping their feet and singing along
during the after dinner activities.
Some of the jokes were quite funny
and I have subsequently turned
them -into my
own.
Herongate has a real country
feel with the main dining room
but close enough to be considered
"in the area".
The plav "Marriage is Murder"
by Nick Hall starred Peter
G. Hurley and Ann E. Ward.
The play is set in modern
day New York and is about
a divorced couple who have
been forced together again
to rekindle there ability to
write an effective
murder/mystery. They not
only write the story, they act
out each of the individual
scenarios with each other.
The story line was amusing
in some scenes, however I
found a lot of the dialog was lost
on a mainly senior audience.
Altogether I found this to be a
very different and enjoyable
evening worthy of a second visit
for $35.95 per person when the next
play "I Dream of Genie" arrives on
November 2nd.

alone. Run the engine to no*nal
temperature for ten minutes. redrain
the engine and close the drain valve.
3. Refill the radiator. Check
your owner's manual for cooling
system capacity. Install between 50
and 70 percent Prestone
Antifreeze/Ccx)lant and water. Once
the system is tilled, run the engine
to normal operating temperature
with the heater on high for ten
minutes. Shut off engine and allow
to cool. Top off system and c(x)lant
resei- oir.
-t. Dispose of the used
antifreeze/coolant in accordance
with the law.
5. Check for any spills or leaks
and clean up immediately. Tighten
the child resistant cap on the
antifreeze container and store
securely away.
Cutline: Changing your
antifreeze/coolant annually helps
prevent ccx)ling system failure, the
primary cause of engine -related
breakdowns.
