Damn Those Net Pornographers . .
By Toni Reme
They're destroying our
children. Where's the outrage'?
About a year and a half ago
Time Magazine did a story on
"Cyber Porn" which claimed
that 83.5Q(- of all content on the
Internet was pornographic. Like
most media reporting this issue.
Time invoked the bogeyman
warning of the decay of our
society, the corruption of our
children and last, but not least;
eternal damnation. "O000" was
anybody scared'
The article was wrong then
and it's wrong now. Aside from
the boring statistics that
accompany every report and
every critique of every report.
their study was based on a
study conducted through
Carnegie '.Mellon
University, which
based its information
On "pornographic
news groups." and
not the whole
internet. Their
report was
based
solely
on
the sites supporting
pornographic material.
If \uu type the word "porn."
you'll find about 3.000
documents, which will include
ever\ sexual thing imaginable.
Typim, the word "Religion" will
result in about 11.000
documents, while the word
"Pet" will get you about 4,000
hits. This hardly is the 83.5cl,
porn on the Internet, that Time
warned us about. A more
accurate figure has been
calculated at "less than 1/2 of
I cIc of the messages on the
internet are associated with sites
that contain pornographic
material." Those that were
listening didn't buy the story
then and they aren't buying it

introduction of

our kids are exactly
where you wish they

According to
the Carnegie
Mellon report
yt
98.9% of all
users of on line porn are men,
but Internet technology does not
have a singular goal of allmN in -
the emotionally crippled male
gender to communicate pictures
of their female victims and as
some would say, increase the
incidence of sexual abuse and
rape. It is not the goal of a male
dominated technology to
oppress women or where the
mere si`ht of bare flesh instantly
converts men into rapists. In
addition this piece of high
technology is not designed to get
porn and bomb recipes into the
hands of children or to promote
gays and lesbians getting at your
children.
Porn sites are attractive and
provocative and they will suck
your kids in to "Click Here."
The worst part for me and
mavbc you, is that your kid and
mine will find all they want and
anything they want for free.
They don't need your credit card
numbers or money to do it, just

to type one of many words like.

The Internet is by far the
greatest form of chaotic mass
participation and free speech
ever developed and protection
from censorship should be
guarded. It is the unregulated
chaos of the Internet that
strengthens free speech. But
we're parents not governments
and we don't belong to free
speech groups. We don't give a
damn what the government says:
what the group says. We care
about our kids and we want to
protect them because we believe
we're right and we care what
they see.
We don't have any control
over what they hear in the school
yard or in the playground, but
we sure as hell have the ability
to control porn in our homes.
til\ kid is twelve and regardless
of what experts in raising a child
might advise, my child is not
ready for this type of material, at
least not yet. Someday she can
make up her own mind, but not
today. lt's foolish to think that
"self regulation or government
regulation" will keep porn from
in,. home. It's a big big business
and there's too much
money at stake for
voluntary regulation.
The schools are teaching
our kids how to use computers
and how to access the net.
Employees have access to the
net at work, but are the schools
or the employers protected from
unauthorized access to porn
sites. 1 wonder what their
liability would be if an employee
or your child accidentally
accessed a porn site?
There's not much we can
do, but there is at least some
protection for parents schools
and employers. The best bet is to
purchase blocking or filtering
software that limits access to
adult oriented Internet sites. The
way we use this technology will
be up to us to decide what is
good for our children and what
is not. There's a lot of software
available with control features
including "Surf Watch "Net
Nanny" and " CYBERsitter."
Surf Watch prevents the
downloading of sexually explicit
pictures and some phone
companies (it's the telephone
lines, o.k.) are considering an
"industrial strength version" that
can be installed on national
phone systems.

New Developments in the
Law of Wrongful Dismissal
Wrongful dismissal, as it
defined by the Courts in Canada.
mean,, that an employer has failed to
pro%ide an enlplo%cc with reasonable
notice of termination or payment in
lieu thereof. The amount of notice Ir,
•.shich an employee is entitled is
dependant upon a number of tactors
including the employees age, position.
icnure w ith the company, job respon-
.ibilitics. and the length of time it takes
the employee to obtain alternate
employ ment. A common miscon-
ception is that an employee ma,. seek
damages for wrongful dismissal only
when the manner or method of
termination is "%rongful". This is
incorrect. Although there may he
recourse available to employees in
circumstances where the method of
termination was high handed, callous.
malicious or %indicti%c in nature, such
instances are rare. Generally. damages
for wrongful dismissal are limited to
situations where the employer has
failed to prrn ide adequate notice of
termination or payment in lieu thereot
In most instances. the
"reasonable" notice period is

experience, most enlplo%er, w ill
initially provide the terminated

offer. The offer is usualls only
nlarginall\ greater than the minimum
statuton pay nlent prescribed under the
Ontario Employment Standards Act.
In addition. the employer w ill likel\
ask that the employee sign a Release
before monies are paid. The execution
of a Release will preclude the
employee from seeking reasonable
notice of termination, which depending
on the facts, may be measured in the
tens of thousands of dollars.
it is essential that a terminated
employee understand his(her rights and
not accede to the pressures of the
employer to accept the initial offer. If
the emplover is pressuring you to sign
on the "dotted line', it usually means
that the package offered is not
reasonable.

Natural Gas An Abundant Energy Recourse
(NC) -Clean, efficient and
inexpensive, natural gas is one of
Canada's most abundant sources
of energy. Ninety -rive percent of
the natural gas produced in Canada
comes from Alberta and British
Columbia. There are also huge gas
reserves in the North and offshore

A Viable Alternative
Over the past decade, natural

Hydro Emissions
Report Tainted
"The recent release of the Ontario
Hydro Great Lakes Emissions Report is
as tainted as the emissions from the plant
itself," says Councillor Maurice
Brenner.
Councillor Brenner restates his
earlier opinion that Ontario Hydro does
not have the credibility to review or
investigate themselves. Lake Ontario
is under the federal jurisdiction as part of
the Canada/Umted States Great Lakes
Au,reement. Nothim, short of an
independent review bN the Great Lakes
Commission is acceptable.
Councillor Brenner is in
concurrence that since the opening of
the Pickering Nuclear Generating
Station, the Ontario Hydro Management
system has demonstrated inadequate
environmental accountability,
inadequate environmental awareness, a
breakdown of internal and external
reporting relationships: and lack of
environmental ethic.
With that type of track record, how
much credibility can the people of
Ontario and the residents of Pickering
have in a report that is commissioned
by the same management with those
flaws?
Did You Know That ...
Since 1990. Canada's corporate tax revenue has declined faster than any developed
nation. in i 992, corporate taxes in Canada, as a percentage of GDP, were lower than
those in 24 industrialized countries, including the United States, Britain and Japan.
it take-, most individual Canadians about six months of work just to pay off their

Is Ginseng a True Cure All?
By Dr. Daniel J. Crisafi
PhD., ND.. MH
(NC) - All of us have heard
something about Ginseng. The first
written mention we have about this
plant comes to us from the first
century AD China. Though not the
cure-all that it is often touted to be,
ginseng, particularly Panax ginseng

humans adapt more effectively to
the various stresses we face in our
modern society.
Panax ginseng's role in helping
to increase our capacity to deal with
stress, particularly physical stress,

by researchers. According to Dr.

that the same extract, supplying 41,;

How Do Kidneys Work?
(NC) -The main job of the kidneys is to remove
blood and return it. clean, to the body.
Every minute about one litre of blood (one fifth of
all blood pumped by the heart) enters the kidneys
through the renal arteries. The blood then runs through
tiny filtering units of the kidney. called nephrons.
Each kidney is made up of approximately one
million nephrons. The nephrons save substances the
body needs (to be carried by the renal veins back to the

Featuring The Outsiders
& Cool Hand Luke
Thanks to you i got a lot of mail. mostly telling me about older movies you guys have seen and liked.
If I print your reviews i won't have a job left. so my reviews go in yours don't. Here's two I've seen this week.
The Outsiders: (Black & White) Featuring C. Thomas Howell. Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio. Patrick
Swayze. Rob Lowe. Diane Lane, Emilio Estevez. Toni Cruise. Leif Garrett. Tom Waits and Sofia Coppola.
\'here else could you see such a stellar cast of todav*s actors and actresses in one movie.
It's about troubled teenagers growing up in Oklahoma in the 60's
Cool Hand Luke: Featuring Paul Newman. George Kennedy. J.D. Cannon, Lou Antonio. Strother
Martin. Jo Van Fleet. Dennis Hopper. Harry Dean Stanton, Joe Dan Baker and some lessor lights. George
Kennedv won an Oscar for his performance in this movie.
It's a slant on prison reform, but irreverent with two of the best scenes being Paul Newman cutting the heads
off of parking meters and the egg eating contest.

review 5eahorses Uo It I he1 00
By Aaron Bernardo
For The Seahorses, just
showing up on Saturday, August
the 8th for their sold out show at
the Opera House would probably
have been enough.
The Manchester/Oxford
foursome have added their own
guitar -driven element to the wave
of new fast -paced electronic music
emanating from the UK recently
with their new album "Do /t
Yourself'. And leading the way in
the band is John Squire, ex -Stone
Roses and one of the most
influential guitarists of the late
eighties till present day. Unfortu-
nately for North Americans, due
to a lengthy court case with their
original label Silverton, The Stone
Roses were barely heard of' this
side of the pond, and Squires'
brilliant guitar playing went
virtually unheard - until now.
With singer and ex -street

Fletcher, and drummer Andy

combination of bouncv tunes and

When The Seahorses first
appeared before the 1,000 strong
crowd their music was lost by an
audience whose heads were darting
back and forth between Helme and
Squire: interested to see what the

to divert their eves away from the

of the nervousness reportedly
shown by Helme in earlier
Seahorses shows was relevant on
this night, perhaps due to his
apparent like of Canadian beer. The
solo rendition by Helme of "Hello"
showed signs of a mature vocalist
worthy of Britpop stardom.
Despite being drown out by
Squires volume level in songs like

the crowd into a frenzy begging

Whether The Seahorses can
prove they can hang around for the
long-haul or self-destruct like The
Stone Roses is vet to be seen.

Mission accomplished
Piekerin2 sailor Bernard
Luttmer set his goals this season
to win a medal at the World
Youth Sailing Championships in
hipan. Gold would have been an
added bonus. but he settled for
silver and is pleased with his
accomplishment.
"I was hoping to finish top
three." admits Luttmer. "i was
pleasantly surprised it all
worked out. i would have liked
the gold. but I'm happy with
getting silver. My goal was to
get a medal. and 1 got one.
-Realistically. I didn't think

Competing in the Laser

Pickering resident led the field
right up to what would be the
final race of the championships.
Only eight of the scheduled I 1
races had been completed.
Called because of light winds.
Luttmer didn't get a chance to
make up the ground needed to
be World Champion.
"Unfortunately, i didn't
have a chance to catch up." says
Luttmer. "Going into the final
race I was in first. but had to do
penalty laps which put me
behind. Worse things could have
happened than winning a silver
medal."
r Luttmer said training
sessions with Olympic and
World champion Robert Scheidt
in Florida helped him excel in
Japan.
"I had some clinics with
him.- says Luttmer. "He's the
reason I went down there. He's
where I want to go eventually."

"it's a lot to face," says
Luttmer of the world-class field.
"They're all quite established

For the 18 -year-old

it has been a summer to

"So far, it's going as

Luttmer says his coach

condensation results. Here are
three ways to tackle the moisture
problem:
1. Reduce moisture at the source.
• Avoid hang -dryings clothes
indoors. You'd be surprised how
much moisture this can add to
the air_ The same goes for do ing
firewood.
• Make sure your clothes dryer

Be aware of the amount of

Make Sure humidifiers are

2. Keep moist air away from
your home's structure.
Make sure you have well --

Our Commissioner of Finance

got a royal send-off on his
retirement this month. Credited as
on of the main architects of
Durham's triple A credit rating.
Gartlev always professed the same
"pay as you go ' policy urged by the
likes of past and present chairs
Arthurs. Wittv. Hadden. Aker. Ashe
et al at the Aegion. Representing
Pickering in the packed audience
'4%as Mavor Wayne Arthurs and
Councillor Doug Dickerson while
Jim Witty represented both the
Region and Ajax. I was pleased to
be there to say "thanks" to Jack, as a
past regional member on finance.
A full contingent of Whitby council
under Mayor Tom Edwards was
also present. Thanks to you Jack,
Durham is in an enviable financial
position.
We had a chance to see local
"super late model" stock car driver
Mike Bricknell win another race in
chis new Camaro racer at Flamboro
Speedway near Hamilton last week.

Governments are elected to
govern. They have the right to
govern thoughtfully, for all of us,
and to move forward on the
platform on which they were
elected. No one argues this point.
The right to govern comes with an
obligation to listen, even when
you're heading up a majority. As
added insurance, our parliamentary
system provides an opposition and
rules to ensure its voice is heard.

1997 Ajax Home Week chair
Myrna Picotte lead a revitalized
executive to just a super week of
fun for everyone. It was a week to
come home to Ajax and take pride
in a special community. Myrna lead
by old fashion "hard work" and
everyone followed suit. A tip of the
hat to five town service organi-
zations, Legion, Lions, Kinsmen,
Optimists and Rotary and a
multitude of other groups who
participated. Ajax' proud "1997

Secretary was Marilyn Brooks,
Treasurer Susan Coburn -Bennett,
Publicity chair Trish Mann, Auction

everyone from Ajax Council tc
