Joe Dickson's report under the banner of the Regional Happenings that the Ajax Conservation area has been closed because of Ontario budget cuts. I recollect vividly when the Greenwood conser- vation area was first opened in 1958. in those early days. when our children were growing up, Greenwood was a godsend to have an inexpensive outing. These days the letter "A" in Ajax appears to stand for affluent. if one can give credence to the information provided in the Final Draft Report of the Town of Ajax DOWNTOWN STUDY. One is led to believe that "A significant portion of the Ajax population is in the middle to high income bracket, with 65% of households earning in excess of $50.000 per year. Over one third of households are in the S70.00O + per year earning category". (That is 3317c). Simple arithmetic indicates that ?9c oh households are not as fortunate. These Ajacians would enjoy the Greenwood conservation area, as did our family in the late 50s and early 60s. Perhaps our local MPP could do something about it. and have the funding reinstated. Guy Colm 14 - 1 A i47"s 1 - 1 Interview with "Reverend" Patrick B, Toni Reme Becoming homeless was not what he had in mind when he left a low paying job back home. He did not picture himself sleeping under bridges or newspapers in an open park. when he got off the bus with a couple of hundred dollars in his pocket. He came here to work hard and earn better pay. There was always someone special back home that kept him chasing his dream. Patrick heard that the pay was better here and the opportu- nities too. It never occurred to Patrick that life could sometimes deal you a bad hand when \ou least expected it. High hopes and unfulfilled promises were foremost in Patrick's mind. Ambition too. On his way to a job interview. life jumped up and grabbed him quickly changing a law abiding hard working citizen to a homeless person within weeks. A driver running a red light hit him square on. Patrick's fate was sealed. Unlike 80 million North Americans who are one paycheck away from being homeless. Patrick arrived under different circumstances. The bicycle he was riding was totaled and carried away by the police. As for Patrick he was totaled too, not only by the accident, but also by the bureau- cracies that stand for the social conscience of our community. These organizations meant to sere are more concerned with the bottom line and protecting their own jobs rather than the community they were meant to sere. The accident left him with a permanent limp and a leg with little strength that frequently gives out on him, causing him to fall or stumble not unlike a person with more than one too many to drink. He can hardly sit down sometimes or walk two blocks without the leg going numb and threatening to quit on him. All this should have qualified Patrick for assistance. It did not. When the doctors looked at Patrick after the accident the\ said he only had soft tissue damage and that the pain would go away in a few days. When the pain didn't go away and the few days passed, the medical staff changed their position and said the pain would go away in three or four weeks. He thought this would entitle him to some form of compensation either from social services or from the insurance coverage carried by the offending driver. Wrong on both counts. First Patrick hadn't been working in this province or this community. He was unemployed and could not obtain disability income. Secondly, the driver and her witness claimed Patrick was just tapped by her vehicle contrary to the evidence of a twisted bicycle. With no temporary assistance from social services and no job, Patrick could not carry on a legal battle for compensation from the insurance company. In the meantime Reverend Patrick has a new used bike that helps him strengthen his weak leg. He's not working anywhere. but he keeps his spirits up by encouraging his new homeless friends not to give up and to do whatever it takes to rise above the loneliness they share and the disregard the community has for them. In the meantime he lives over a warm vent or under a bridge like a troll. "It's degrading to be looked upon as something cheap and disposable." There comes a time when you start feeling you can't do anything to improve your lot, when having the right paperwork and required proof doesn't make a scrap of difference. This is when life itself could be taken. There's a perception that no one has to wind up homeless. It's an untenable position to hold. If it happens it's because of some flaw in the person's character. There are drunks and druggies among the homeless, just as there are drunks and druggies among the housed, but don't think that this couldn't happen to you. Were it not for the accident Patrick would he on his way to work just like you and I, walking past people who live the way he lives now. I asked Patrick if he had a chance to change his decision to come to our community, away from his low paying job, where home was safe and familiar, would he do it? Patrick's reply was immediate and unequivocal. "No." Life's funny that way. BROKEN WINDSHIELD? UP TO $140n00VALUE No Overcharge to Insurance Co. One thing they all agree on: persistence pays off. Whether you need two thousand dollars, S20.(x)O or $200.000. you should do much more than target one program that suits your business. Here are two techniques that have worked for many small businesses. C 41 1. Look for a number of programs that fit your requirements. and determine which ones complement each other. Then apply to all these at once. fila% be you can get one agency to fund skills training for your workers. another to help you expand your facilities. another to give you export assistance for the sale of products abroad. and another to help fund marketing. 2. You can also seek assistance form provincial and federal government departments at the same time. Provincial and federal bureaucrats prefer to share the costs and political risks of their Programs, so if you can layer your grants of loans between the various levels of government, you might increase your chances. Remember that once you've done the work preparing an application for one program. you'll find subsequent proposals that are much easier to prepare. SOUTH WHITBY - THICKSON RD. & HWY. #2 t ilk Orwo Capwa.en Canadians say Health Care is Worse Today then it was a Year Ago (NC) -More Canadians than last year believe their healthcare system is getting worse, according to a new Canadian Medical Association (CMA) survey. The survey, conducted by the Angus Reid Group on behalf of the CMA, polled Canadians on their opinions of health care. Results show 60 per cent of Canadians, up from 50 per cent last year, think cuts have had a negative effect on access to health care in their communities. "it can only get worse," says Dr. Judith Kazimirski CMA President and herself a family physician. "Over a five-year period between 1995 and 2000, federal cash payments to the provinces will drop 48 per cent. These cuts are forcing changes beyond the system's ability to cope." Canadians believe they are waiting longer for tests, surgery and hospital emergency treatment, and that the availability of hospital nursing care is less than it was a year ago. Waiting time in hospital emergency departments topped the list of concerns for Canadians. It is significant that the number of Canadians sharing these beliefs has increased over last year. The national survey was conducted in March 1997 and 1,525 Canadians were interviewed. It is the second such survey by the CMA as part of its continuing efforts to track Canadians' views on health care. I send my wife (only if she wants to go). By the time I get there all new releases are out and I walk around looking at mostly these dumb movie titles. wondering why none of them remind me of the movies I told myself to remember to see. Some of my favorites that I've seen and I'll see again: Five Easy Pieces: Featuring Jack Nicholson, Karen Black, Susan Anspach and others. This is a terrific movie with memorable dialogue by Jack Nicholson trying to get toast and coffee after breakfast has quit being served in a restaurant. Start with the chicken sandwich. The story isn't about the women that fill Nicholson's needs traveling along the road, but to a book of piano exercises he owned as a child. The film's about the distance Nicholson's character puts between himself as a boy practicing the piano as a toy on his way to being a concert pianist and the need he feels some twenty years later to disguise himself as an oil field rigger. For Glenn Healy, he has come home. As a young boy growing up watching the Toronto Maple Leafs. Heal% dreamt of one day skating on the hallowed ice of Maple Leaf Gardens and playing between the pipes for the -illustrious club. He's no stranger to the visitors bench. but now the dream of putting on the blue and white jersey is a reality. Now, entering his 12th season in the National Hockey League, the former Pickering Jr. C Panther netminder will now proudly wear a Leafs jersey for the next three seasons. Healy has minded the net for the Los Angeles Kings, New -York Islanders. and most -recently, the New York Rangers before signing a 3 -year, $3.8 million deal with the Leafs last week. "If you dare to dream, it will come true," says Healy. "And it did.,, Montreal and Vancouver were also interested in Heal%'s sen ices, but when it came down to deciding, the final factor was "location, location, location" says Healy. Apart from being a 45 minute drive to work from the comfort of his home. the Ajax resident is anxious to work with new coach Mike Murphy and likes the path the Leafs are taking. "Mike Murphy is a good coach and I wanted to play for him." says Healy. "And the organization is going in the right direction." With a healthy Mike Richter between the pipes for the Rangers, action would be have been minimum for the former Pickering Hockey Association netminder. "It was time for a change," says Healy. I wanted to play here four years ago before I signed with the Rangers. To me, it's a dream come true to play for the Leafs." Healy was the fourth free agent signed by the Maple Leafs Glenn Healy this off-season which included Kris King, Mike Kennedy, and former Ranger teammate Derek King. At 34 -years -old (he'll be 35 years old in August), the netminder has been relegated to backup duties during the latter stages of his career. That suits him just fine - even in Toronto. "I'm coming in to help the club win," says Healy. "I'm here to get this team to win and that's all that matters. However, the Ajax girls took great satisfaction of scoring the only goal Oakville would allow when Kristen Hannah bulged the net with time running out. Although being the first tournament the girls had played together, they can be proud of their effort. The team consists of Ashima Bhatt. Nearing the final stage of his career, although not ready to contemplate retirement, Healy understands his role as a leader and relishes the opportunity with his new club. Healy will now take his place in the Toronto dressing room where many great Leaf goaltenders from years -gone -by once sat. "The Leafs have a great history and you should be proud to wear this sweater," says Healy. 655-3091 TiPS Give a Good Squeeze to Detect a Bad Hose Until recently, the most common method of checking the engine coolant hose was to visually inspect its outside cover for signs of wear, or "ballooning- under pressure. This method is no longer considered completely reliable in light of research that proves most hoses fail from the inside out. During four years of field tests on fleet vehicles, engineers for the Gates Rubber Company identified the primary cause of coolant hose failure as an electrochemical attack on the tube compound inside the hose. The phenomenon, known as electrochemical degradation. or ECD. produces fine cracks. or striations, in the tube wall. These fine cracks extend from the inside to the outside of the hose tube. near one- or both ends of the hose. The coolant seeps through these cracks and attacks the hose reinforcement as it wicks along the length of the hose. The condition eventually results in a pinhole leak or a burst of hose at failure. ECD is not peculiar to any one automotive manufacturer, but is evident in almost all cooling system hoses. The most severe damage occurs where the temperature is hottest and air is present with the coolant, which is why upper radiator hoses tend to fail first. Like oxidation, ECD is accelerated by driving habits that increase the heat history of the coolant hose. Therefore, engine hoses that are subjected TO RAE IN THE to any extended amount of stop -and -go, or engine idle. show earlier more severe electrochemical damage. The best way to check the coolant hose for the effects of ECD is to squeeze the hose near the clamps or connectors using the following procedures recommended by Gates: -%lake sure the engine is cool. -Use fingers and thumb to check for weakness, not the whole hand. -Squeeze near the connectors. ECD occurs within two inches of the ends of the hose, not the middle. • Check for any difference in the feel between the middle and ends of the hose. "Gaps" or ,,channels" can be felt along the length of the hose tube where it has been weakened by ECD. -If the ends are soft and feel 1997 INDIKART CHALLENGE uu JENSPORT RACING ... =' .905-640-1624 -INDIKA IT wui lreir AlrFAIwAllr. rBITltAItT MIARB RASE LRART3 SlMa. , ., M E><MII(E H.
