more than just houses

Ask what John Boddy goes for a
oliving and he'll tell you he builds
houses. But talk with him for a few
K minutes and it becomes obvious that
Z he does much more than that - he
builds communities.
A spirit of long-term investment
in a community, plus a commitment
to strong family ideals, are the main-
stays of John Boddy Homes. The
Scarborough -based company has
been building communities in the
Greater Toronto Area for almost 25
years, most notably Forest Brook in
Pickering and now Eagle Ridge in
Pickering Village.
A tall, modest man with Walt
Disney looks and grandfatherly
charm, Boddy got his start in 1955
with father-in-law Robert
McClintock. An engineering gradu-
ate of the university of Toronto (he
also holds an MBA), Boddy found
that the job with McClintock gave
him an opportunity to learn every-
thing about home building, from the
foundation up.
"Everything he did, be did well,"
Boddy says of McClintock. "I had a
good mentor in him "

Boddy established his own firm,
with its distinctive emblem of an
eagle in flight, a symbol that Boddy
says typifies his ideals of grace,
beauty and power. "The eagle has
always been considered an outstand-
ing bird. At a glance, that's bow we
want our company to be seen."
The company has planned 900
family homes, plus 250 apartment
units, for the Eagle Ridge site. The
development sits on the edge of the
Riverside Golf Club, which Boddy's
company owns. The golf course will
be turned over to the Town of Ajax,
"Sometime after the tum of the cen-
tury:" says Boddy.
He says he enjoys working with
municipalities like Ajax to deter-
mine a community's long-range
needs. "The municipalities will
determine in a broad -brush way
what lands will be built on," he says.
"There will be certain parameters,
where they want parks and schools.
They'll plan in advance. They art

A community development
means long-term commitment by all
parties involved - the municipality,
the developer and citizens. The pro-
posal for Eagle Ridge, for instance,
was first brought to Ajax Comuil in
1985. Construction began in 1994
and will continue into the next cen-
tury. It's a long process that demands
a tear and committed outlook.
A big put of that oomrrtitment is
designing homes that meet all the
needs of new homebuyers. "We
design our homes in-house" says
Boddy. "We have weedy, sometimes
daily meetings on the design of a
house. I suspect few companies
spend tum amount of time on plan-
ning.
Planning also extends to street
names. Boddy says be "has great
respect" for the Ajax tradition of
naming its stress after World War H
veteraax who saved aboard the war-
ship HMS Ajax. In other co®sai-

Many of the routes in Boddy's
developments are named for British
castles, harkening back to his
English roots and love of history.
Throughout the company's head-
quarters, prints of 19th century
London scenes decorate Tutor -style
,panelled walls. A suit of armour
stands gaud in a corner of the mm-
pany boardroom, overseen by a por-
trait of Robert McClintock.
A Toronto native, Boddy was
raised in the east end. Growing up.
he developed a love of family histo-
ry, a respect for the need to nurture
strong family traditions and a recog-
nition that clean, well-planned
neighbourhoods are the birthplace of
good communities.
He tells of a grandfather a bare -
knuckle boxing champ in the North
West Mounted Police, and of anoth-
er grandfather, a cavalry captain,
who also saved in the Mounties. "I
still have his broadsword and his
gun, which was one of the first guns
that was cartridge -loaded and had its
own firing pin," he says.
The Boddy family home was a
modest semi-detached house on a
17 -foot -wide lot with a shared drive-
way. "But my father had a car, we
had a cottage and we owned a
house. As far as I was concerned, we
had everything. What more could
you ask for?"
Today's homebuyer looks for

up until about 20 years ago," he
says. "A ground floor was simply a
living room, dining room and
kitchen."

for years were built to the CMHC
(Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation) standards, with an

size of a bedroom," he adds. "And
we increasingly see more comer
tubs with built-in whirlpools and a
shower stall that's separate from the
tub."

- Compounding Your Tax
Refund for a Richer Future
You've probably heard some-
one tell you to make your money
work for you. There's'a way of
doing just that and it's called
ccmtpounding.
The short -terns benefits of
compounding arc admittedly lim-
ited. The long-term benefits,
however, can be dramatic.
If you invested $100 on the
first business day of each month
for 10 years at a 10 per cent rate
of return compounded monthly,
you would accumulate $20,655,
including your principal of
$12,000. If you invested the same
amount at a 15 per cent rate of
return, the total investment would
be worth $27,866, a difference of
$7,211.
But imagine investing that
$100 over a longer period. After
20 years, your principal invest-
ment of $24,000, earning 10 per
cent compounded monthly, would
be worth $76,570. Your $100 a
month invested over 30 years
would cam $227,933, a substan-
tial increase. Extend that over 40
years and your money would
grow io $637,687.
Combine a higher rate of
return with your investment and
the effccts of compounding are
markedly greater" For example, if
you invested your money at 15
per cent over 40 years, you would
.have earned a staggering $3.1
'million. Those five additional
percentage points mean a differ-
ence of $23 million!
Compounding is money multi-
plying itself. Investors earn
income on their income earned.

ment is constantly increasing,
income is earned on the income
of previous years.
That's called compounding.
After 10 years, the investor has
$2,593.74 — almost three times as
much as the spender. It's a pain-
less way to invest and have your
investment grow at the same time.
A handy tool for measuring the
growth of your investment is the
"rule of 72." Simply divide the
number 72 by the annual rate of
return your investment will earn
and the result will tell you how
maty years it will tate for your
investment to double.
For example, if you invested
$1,000 at 10 per cent, your
investment will double in 7.2
years (72/10 = 7.2). Invest the
same amount at 15 per cent and it
will double in 4.8 years (72/15 =
4.8).
The longer you allow your
investment to grow and the
greater the rate of return, the hq-
er the future value of your invest-
ment will be.

The boys are back in Melonville
A few vears back when SCTV was in re -runs just after sup-
pertime in Pickering. if you were willing to waste an entire
Monday evening_ you could staN in Melonville until you gave
up watching council on Cable 10, and went to bed around 2:00
a.m. Chances were that -the boys" would still be at it, but bick-
ering and sarcasm loses its humor after awhile.
The morning after the Dickerson debacle last week - that
fateful night when Pickering council shamelessly brought "the
bo}s" back together again — we tried our best to find some
humor in the situation. However. there was none. The voters in
ward 2. who thought the% had voted the man out, were aghast.
They had waiched. helplessh, as he was parachuted right back
in by his pals.
Not that they should have been surprised b} the outcome: this
farce had several weeks in which to be orchestrated, honed and
revised. The only real question was which councillor would be
the one to go out on the limb and actually nominate their buddy.
If we are to believe our sources — the councillors themselves
— there was a lot of waffling back and forth. At one time. Rick
Johnson insisted he wouldn't be the one to do the nominating-,
he would, however, support DD — and Enrico Pistritto would
do the deed. Maurice Brenner, of course, was out of the ques-
tion. Although happy to support Dickerson's nomination, nomi-
nating him would not look good on a roan who has plans to be
the next mayor.
Pisttitto, originally quoted as supporting England, had said
that he would support Sherry Senis — and subsequently voted
for Dickerson. Ride Johnson even had the gall to be blatantly
finny in his speech to nominate his pal, saying Dickerson had
supported him when he ran for council. The spirit of Melonville
is alive and vtdl.
For anyone who my think that what took plate at the open
meeting was democracy in action, look again. Thirty people —
most of than not even residents of ward 2, and one who was
Dickerson's own daughter — were allowed time by council to
praise their candidate at kogdL Even though not one had bees

In the weeks and months to follow, we will be watching as the
GTA unfolds. And Dickerson — the Pickering councillor who
actually voted in favour of placing the monster garbage dump in
Picketing, because it would be "good for the region" — will be
right in that, making wonderful decisions for us all at regional
council once again.
We will watch as local cotnrcH meetings stretch later and Y`
later into the evening. We will see the posturing, hear the bick-
ering, and watch as a block of councillors vote `en masse' to
force though whatever they decide a `good for Pickering'.
Don't say we didn't warn you: "the boys" are back.

Your editorial January 24, 1996 "Is
Pickering Against Everything?" appears to
support the notion that urban development
where ever it may occur is a good thing.
It would appear that you have little sympa-
thy for the planning process and an Official
Plan which seeks to protect the nature and
character of rural Pickering.
Many hundreds of hours of citizen involve-
ment, consultation and study, have been
devoted to producing an Official Plan which
would guide and regulate future development
in the rural areas of North Pickering.
Your editorial reveals an astonishing con-
tempt for the Democratic process.
Too often citizens are silent when they
should speak out. To the Council's credit it
heard the voices and was reminded of its
responsibilities.
One can only hope that the Pickering
Council will continue to be against anything
that tramples on the rights of its citizens.

— A strategy for growth

residents, either directly or
through partnerships with
public and private organiza-
tions, is the stated goal of
the Department of Culture
and Recreation in the Town
of Pickering. With a full-
time staff of 15 and over
200 part-time employees,
the department works with
the community to provide
quality service that is both
cost-efficient and effective.
At the state-of-the-art
Recreation Complex, both
recreation and cultural
activities attract over 3,000
members besides many
other pay -per -use clients.
Programs include fitness
classes and instruction in
squash, tennis, racquetball,
swimming and skating.
Structured programs in
the visual arts take place in
the pottery room, photogra-
phy room and arts studio.
The building is an open
design which allows visitors
to view many of the activi-
ties from a central location
before making a commit-
ment to join in.
Many of the areas are
multi-purpose and are the
location for banquets, meet-
ings, and other events, such
as the popular Christmas
Mini -camp for children.
There is also a supervised
children's room for creative
activity while parents make
use of the facilities

role of the Culture and
Recreation Department is to
enhance the quality of life
for residents," says Stephen.
"All our staff are excited
about the partnerships that
we have formed and look
forward to working with
new groups in the future."
The Youth Outreach
Program became an impor-
tant focus in 1995. "The
town made a commitment to
go the distance," says Steve.
"We started working with
youth to find out what they
wanted so we could develop
programs beyond the tradi-
tional ones. Last year was
only the start of a long-term
relationship."
Teen programs take place
at the East Shore and
Brougham community cen-
tres and Pine Ridge and St.
Mary's high schools. Pre-
teen dances are held on a
regular basis at the
Pickering Recreation
Complex.
As well, though they
already have strong commu-
nications with the arts com-
munity, the department
wants to develop a long-
term strategy for the arts.
Steve says that the depart-
ment is wide-open to ideas
and is prepared for the chal-
lenges. "V* feel that we are
progressive and creative and
can still make things hap-
pen..,
The department's
approach bore fruit in the
pottery room where having
a private company provide
expert instruction produced
a quality program. Other
associations have resulted in
the formation of outstanding
drama instruction and excel-
lent fitness and cultural pro-
grams for the East Shore
Seniors Centre, and the
Dumbarton, St. Mary's, and
Pine Ridge High Schools.
Under the auspices of the
Department, the Pickering
Museum Village holds tours
and sponsors popular
Outreach Programs as well
as being the site for annual
folk music and literary festi-
vals.
Besides the regular pro-
grams, the department sup-
ports many special events.
On February 10, a
Heritage Day Festival will
take place in the Recreation
Complex to celebrate the
rich cultural heritage of the
Town of Pickering.

costumes, traditional foods.

There is a certain

to perform Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (C.P.R.) Perhaps
even more important than
learning C.P.R. itself, the
knowledge gained teaches you
to recognize the signs and
.symptoms of a heart attack and
to activate the EMS
(Emergency Medical System).
Placing the victim into the
EMS in the early stages of a
heart attack is an important
step because early medical
attention may prevent the
person from going into cardiac
arrest (where the heart stops
beating). Fifty per cent of all
victims of heart attack die
within two hours of the onset
of symptoms where the person
afflicted has not received
medical attention.
Many people believe that
when someone is having a
heart attack, they have pains
r only down the left arm. While
pain radiating down the left
arm COULD be the sign of a
heart attack. it is only ONE of

central in the chest and is
between the sternum (breast
bone) and the spine, not on the
left side of the chest as many
people believe. Pain can
radiate higher into the chest,
the neck, shoulders and jaw as
well as the arms. It can be
severe or mild and can come
and go. But pain is not the only
sign of a heart attack. There
are many others which people
learn when taking a C.P.R.
course.
The victim of a heart attack
is not the only one who may
benefit from the knowledge
you will gain in taking C.P.R.
Falls, drowning, choking or
electric shock are just a few
more instances where this
valuable skill can help save a
life.
In as little as 4 hours, you
can learn valuable lifesaving
C.P.R. Depending on the
course in which you enrol, you
can develop skills to help
infants, children and adults.

returned to their newly ren-
ovated building at 77
Centre Street North,
Oshawa.
The building which has
been totally re -modelled
and expanded over a 14
month period, will be the
Durham Regional Police
Headquarters, in addition to
housing 17 Division which
covers the Oshawa area.
Over the next 3 months,
the old Oshawa Times
Building will be vacated
along with other temporary
premises used by the police
in Oshawa and Whitby.
Police report that,
throughout the moving pro-
cess. there were no disrup-
tions to the enhanced 911
emergency system.

teams from across the province to Pickering for the fou r.&y tour-
nament. Ranging from the Bunny &vision to Imm=ediate, they all
wanted to won.

team edged Gloucester in one of the thrilling finals of the day 3-2.
After a tight battle from start to finish mixed in with some heat- t,
stopping rushes and sonic tense moments, Pickering's Courtney '-

"That was too exciting." said coach Charie Puddister. "She's

Ajax residents Melissa Ramsey
and Ashley Fawcett who compete
with the Gemini Gymnastics Club
in Oshawa had success at the first
Provincial Qualifier held at the
club. Ramsey competing in the
Jr. 2 category won gold on the
vault, silver on the bars, placed
fourth on the beam and fifth on
the floor to finish third overall.

Minor Atom Panthers fall just short
at Canadian Tire tournament
Pickering Canadian Tire Panthers
Minor Atom 'AA' hockey club recently
travelled to Markham to play in the
annual Canadian Tire Atom hockey
toumament. While the local squad was
nosed out of the finals in their last game
they played well throughout the tourna-
ment and continue to improve their
game. Goaltenders Luke Chivers and
Michael Tadman were especially
impressive in the nets.
The Canadian Tire Panthers tied the
host Markham Waxers 4-4 in their first
game. Brian Campbell lead the
offense with a goal and an assist and
received the Most Valuable Player of
the game award. Andrew Hackett,
team captain, Chris Papalia and
Michael Watkins fired the other
Pickering goals. Assists went to
Jennifer Saddler with two and Craig
Barrell who chipped in with one.
In their second game, the Panthers
suffered their only loss, a 5-2 decision
to the Georgetown Raiders. Watkins
and Michael Murphy did the scoring
for the club. Robert Bayley played a
strong game on defense assisting on
both goals. Campbell also provided a
solo helper Chris MacLeod turned m
a powerful performance and was named
M.V.P. of the game.
Needing a win in their third game to
advance to the finals, the Panthers came
up just short, tying the Nickel Center
team from Sudbury 1-1. Sadler provid-
ed all the offense for the Panthers, scor-
ing on a nice unassisted effort. Because
of her efforts, Sadler was selected as
Pickering's M_VP. of the game_

won their first round in the Ontario Minor Hockey

In the first game of the series, Matthew Lawrence
broke the deadlock six -minutes into overtime, breaking
past the Innisfill defense and firing an overshot past the

Mexico is home to nearly
30.000 species of flowering
plants, including 1,000
species of orchids, plus more
than 1.000 species of birds,
including 50 species of hum-
mingbirds alone.
It has land mammals rang-
ing from monkeys and
jaguars in jungle rainforests,

country is a breeding and
nesting area for endangered

of marine life in the Sea of
Cones, making it a virtual
aquarium to explore. It serves
as a breeding area for whales
(they usually give birth in
February and March) so it's
been declared a whale sanctu-
ary.
You can choose from trips
in this area that last just a few
hours or expeditions that last
two weeks.
Copper Canyon
If you want to see the
largest and deepest canyon in
North America — four times
the size of the Grand Canyon
— just take the train through
Copper Canyon. It's a 644
km. trip from Chihuahua to
Los Mochis, Sinaloa, and it
takes about 16 hours, includ-
ing stops.
Along the way, you'll see
an incredible variety of ter-
rain and vegetation, from
snow-covered mountain
peaks to sub -tropical forests.
Everything from upland lakes
and ranches, and dense
forests of Ponderosa pine to
semi -arid plains, peach and
apple orchards. and areas so
remote they are still unex-
plored.
There are even several
towns along the way that
offer stopover accommoda-
tion so that you can take
horseback or car trips to see
areas of Copper Canyon more

Chiapas, lies the Biosphere
named for an inactive vol-
cano. E1 Triunfo (The
Triumph) is a comparatively
small reserve. But it protects
what could be the must spec-
tacular cloud forest remaining
in North America.
Some 300 species of birds
make their home here. One of
the most spectacular is the
quetzal which figures so
prominently in the Toltec and
Aztec Indian cultures. Oddly
enough, even with the quet-
zal's brilliant green, white
and vermilion plumage,
they're hard to spa as they
perch among the vines and
tree ferns.
Sian lt:a'an Biaephwe
In the local Mayan dialect,
Sian Ka'an means where the
sky is born. Located in the
state of Quintana Roo on the
Yucatan Peninsula, this
reserve is one of the most
important coastal ecosystems
in Mexico and its barrier reef,
the Gama Reef, forms part of
the second longest such reef
in the world.
Several keys scattered in
the bay serve as nesting sites
for thousands of water birds,
but roaming within the habi-
tat are pumas, jaguars,
ocelots, monkeys and
crocodiles.
.Dozens of kinds of bright-
ly -coloured tropical fish live
in the many lagoons and
endangered sea turtles use the
beaches as nesting grounds.
Cozumel
If you'd like to get an
underwater perspective on
ecology, there's no better
place to do it in Mexico than
around Cozumel.
An island located about 65
km south of Cancun,
Cozumel offers crystal clear
Caribbean waters with visibil-
ity up to 60 metres. Some 32
km. of reef (including the
Gama Reef) has over 200
species of fish, undersea
limestone caves and tunnels
and rare black coral.
On land, from May to
September, you can watch sea
turtles lay their eggs on some
of the island's isolated beach-
es.
Xd-Ha
Just outside the archaeo-
logical sites of Tulum, in the
state of Quintana Roo, are the
lagoons of Xel-Ha.
Designated as a national park,
the lagoons are like giant nat-
ural aquariums — transparent
blue waters filled with parrot
fish, angel fish, butterfly fish
and some 50 other species.
Snorkelling is allowed and
you can either bring your own
equipment or rat it here. One
nae: the use of water-ponut-
ing suntan lotions and sun-
bkxb are prohibited.
Thune are many other natu-
ral wonders in Mexico too:
like the beautiful sets of
waterfalls located near the
temples of Palenque, known
as the Cascades de Agus
Azul.
Or the jungles and lakes of
Cobs which protect many
species of wildlife inchtding
monbeys, toucans and indes-
cent blue butterflies.
Or Xcaret with its under-' J
water caverns and tropical
lagoons, an ecological sea in
the Yucean billed as nature's
sacred paradise.

Mariposa Monarca at El
Rosario Reserve in
Michoacan where each year
some 35 -million Monarch
butterflies come from ac far
away as Canada to cover the
pine and oak forests in the
mountains.
Or see the Lagunas de
Montebello, a series of lakes
where each is a different
beautiful colour.

The year I proposed to Bonnie, we were rival coaches in a kid's
baseball league. Bonnie won the league championship and I
promised to take her to the CN Tower to "celebrate her win." On
the day of the dinner, Bonnie's mom and I picked up the engagement
.ring.
During dinner, I excused myself to go to the bathroom. I went
downstairs, ran to a souvenir shop and bought a stuffed Mounted
Police Teddy to help with the ring `bearing.'
1 came back with my hands behind my back, holding the bear (who
was holding the ring box). Bonnie asked what took so long. I told
her I was arrested and I was about to be escorted to the police
jstation. She asked me what happened and I told her "I was caught
I taking this" - at which point I produced the bear and ring.
Bonnie, in shock, realized what was going on. As I got down on one
knee to officially propose, Bonnie noticed another woman sitting at a
table behind me smacking her husband to turn arcund to watch me
propose. Bonnie said yes and we've been happy ever since.

NOTICE TO TOWING COMPANIES
Towing Services located within the boundaries of the Regional
Municipality of Durham arc invited to submit their application for
thesupply of 24 hour towing services and storage pound facilities for
the case of the Durham Regoval Police Service within the Region.
Applicants will be expected to supply information on form., provided
relating to rata for towing and storage. details of towing vehicles
and equipment together with the size, location and general
description of their vchick storage pound(s).
Applicant coinpanru may be asked to provide reasonable accts- fix
inspection of tales stz; pound facilities and towing equipment.
The Police Services Board mscrns the righer to clat, at their discretion, to
approach applicants directly in order aspects of the
application or to obtain further and better particulars.
