Councillor Dave Ryan said he wanted to ensure that the club didn't open. Councillors Maurice Brenner and Sherry Senis were also very vocal in opposition. Councillor Brenner tried to introduce an amendment that would ban lap dancing but failed because other councillors felt that such a ban would make it more likely that the bylaw would be challenged in the courts. The mayor said that candidates would have to be nominated by members of council and elected by them also. But if the council decided that an appointment was appropriate for the local council seat if a councillor moved up. that appointment could also occur on Jan. 29. Tom Crayford told councillors that as a resident of ward 2 he would recommend that the local councillor Sherry Setus be appointed to the regional councillor's position. C To the Original Bas News: If Canadians doubted that the federal P.C. party would return to lead Canada, recent events in Ottawa confirm that the P.C. party will return because it must return. On the one hand we have a Liberal government whose "don't worry, he happy" veneer is now crumbling. It seems that the prime minister's laid back attitude is simply a facade to hide the fact that he either does not grasp or is afraid to tackle the challenges at hand. Moreover. he is not handling our fiscal crises effectively. While 34 cents of every tax dollar is lost to interest payments, Mr. Chretien perpetuates the .s will again nnvIh that our debt problem is not all that serious. On the other hand we have the Reform Party which is more concerned about scoring political points than offering meaningful alternatives to the Liberal government. Reform does not lead using nation -building principles. Rather, Preston Manning uses "hot button politics" to try to get a leg up in the polls. His negative opportunism provokes cynicism and accentuates the differences between Canadians. This is not constructive. This is dangerous. Most recently, Mr. Manning has made the absurd demand that Mr. Chretien be impeached. Mr. Manning's earn Letters to the editor The Original Bay News welcomes Fetters to the Editor. STEPPING STONES ALWNS DRIVE ZWW ON WI;T SLIPPEQ`( SNOW 0 respect reasoning was based on the assertion that Mr. Chretien could not win another round in Quebec. This comment is curious because it draws attention to the fact that Mr. Mant-ing could never win any round in Quebec. Finally, there is the federal P.C. Party which faces the challenge of earning back the confidence of Canadians. Already the P.C.'s tenacious leader Jean Charest has proven himself on the unity front. The party must now demonstrate that through its rebuilding process it has returned to its roots and has a realistic, intelligent, comprehensive agenda to lead Canada into the 21st Century. It is my firm belief that the P.C. party will again earn the respect of Canadians. For the sake of our country, that time cannot come too soon. A printer would also be beneficial for those wishing to retain a hardcopy printout of information discovered while browsing through the Internet. O Although ocean cruising is san all-incluske vacation with the added benefit of a new port most da\s, there are still three things y ou need to know when \ou're planning \our first vacation afloat: what to expect in terms of price. sen ices and play time. \ailing do%►n the cost is the first thing to consider. When \ ou're cruising. on -board meals and most on -board acti\ities are free of charge. but make sure \ou know e\actl\ what else is included in %our all-inclusive cruise package. In most cases. airfare from our hometown to the port where \ou will join the ship is included in the overall price. but it doesn't hurt to check this with \our tra%el agent. Figuring out costs in advance al lows \ou to take along a small supph of boot\ for e\tras and luxuriate in the What you need to know when planning a cruise freedom of a resort setting +ith no price tags. Your cash stash will probably need to cover items like on -board laundn and personal sen ices, from photos and \ ideos of \ ou en.o\ ing cruise life to massages or haircuts. You'll also he pay ing for \our alcoholic be\erages. which are often far cheaper than at home. Getting off the ship at port is free of charge. but signing on for a special land-based tour will likely cost %ou extra. Generally. the costs are reasonable and some cruise lines allow \ou to book \our tours in advance. allow ing \ ou to budget accordingly. `Also e\tra are tips, unless the cruise line is one that has a '-tipping- not-required' policy. Ask \our tra%el agent for advice on tipping and special tour costs -)Clore you go. If \ ou're worried about needing to cancel your vacation for medical reasons. man\ cruise lines will offer full-scale cancellation insurance that lets \ou back out up until a few da\ s before departure. A doctor's certificate is almost alwa\s required to cancel \our cruise booking: make sure ,our travel agent carefull\ e\plains the cancellation policy before you buy.
