A man and his
reindeer
be John Cooper
At the door of the home, you're greeted by a warm, jolly
«oman of an uncertain age, with graying hair and
,plctacles that rest gently on her nose; upon entering, you
realize that the outside appearance of the house was
decxptive.
It's much bigger than anticipated, at once palatial and
high-ceilinged, with windows that stretch 15 metres high.
Its entry hall is adorned with all manner of gadgetry and
tancy work, too many accouterments to count. Gold
embossed picture frames line the wall, a heavy brass coat
rack takes up a corner, light floods the hall from a crystal
chandelier. A cork bulletin board scribbled with names and
fob lists adds a homey note.
The windows are tinged with frost, their corners
crescent -mooned with snow. Outside, flurries fall thickly,
adding quickly to the already -heavy blanket of snow on
the ground.
The faint jingling of bells and the sharp scent of hay are
carried in by the north wind as she quickly shuts the door.
Dmssed in gingham and wearing a large apron that easily
covers her substantial frame, she has obviously been
% orking in the kitchen: she smells of gingerbread and
apple pie and chocolate chip cookies. Warm and
welcoming, she asks the visitor to remove his overshoes
and provides an escort to the door of the study. Already on
the boot tray are a pair of black, shiny boots with little
jingle bells that glitter at their tops.
From elsewhere in the house come the voices of men at
work, tapping, hammering, drilling. They chatter to each
other in busy, sing -song voices.
"You have a visitor," the woman announces to the owner
of the home. In contrast to the grandiose entry hall, the
study is cosy, lined with books and lit solely by a red brick
fireplace that forms the centrepiece of the room.
The owner of the home sits in a great, overstuffed chair
by the fireplace, his face catching the glow of the burning
logs. He is in his socks, feet crossed before the fire,
musing. A red jacket, trimmed in white, hangs over a
nearby chair. With thumbs hooked around hes suspenders,
Ins hands resting against a round belly that rises and falls
slightly with each breath, he has a look of gentle kindness
as he stares at the fire.
"I know," he says, turning. 'Tve been expecting you."

A man and his reindeer
• from Page l
He rises easily from his chair,
showing little sign of age
despite his white hair and a full
white beard that falls across his
chest.
He is at once both humble
and imposing. Of average
height, he could be anyone's
grandfather. But there is
uncommon strength in his
hands, a sharp, incisive sparkle
in his eye, and a calm yet
deternuned attitude that suggests
he knows more about you than
you think. But how could he?
You've only just met.
"Welcome to my home. You
may call me Santa Claus. You
have, of course, met my wife,
Mrs. Claus."
Mrs. Claus exits the room,
then returns with two mugs of
hot cocoa.
"Just the thing to take the
edge off the cold, don't you
'hink?" he asks. He raises a mug
to his lips. The steam makes his
nose wrinkle. "I just got in from
seeding the reindeer. I have to
go back out in a while. I have a
lot of work to do before the big
night."
He knows his job. He's been
doing it a long, long time. But
he never tires of speaking about
his cause.
'T #ere are so few causes that
people have nowadays, I'm
afraid," he says, but the merry
tone never leaves his voice.
"Most people are content to just
drag their way through life. You
might say they are content to he
discontented." He throws his
head back avid lets loose with a
laugh, a "HO -HO -HO" that
escapes from the study and
echoes through the hallway of
the home. "People just don't
want to believe — in magic, in
the faith of children, or in the
spirit of giving."
But what about wars, and
famine, and disease, and racism,
and those other issues that
threaten to swamp humanity?
'7 know those things well," he
says, and, for just a moment, a
shadow passes over his bright
eyes. "After all, I've been around
a long time. They sadden me
greatly. But when I see the eyes
of a child, so full of hope and
the love of life, l can't let that
stop me from doing what I
believe in."
He is known by a variety of
[tames, from Father Christmas to
Kris Kringle and Pere Noel,
Sinter Klass, Joulupukki and St.
Nicholas. He is the culmination
of traditions that blend pagan
ritual with Old Catholic,
Scandinavian, German, English
and Dutch roots.
"It doesn't matter what you
Call me," he says, taking a sip of
his cocoa, "as long as you have
faith that I'll be there."
Cocoa in hand, he moves to a
gnat oak desk that occupies a
corner of the study, sits down,
and casts a cursory glance over
some lists of names, all
handwritten in neat, small script.
He pulls on a pair of bifocals
and reads down the list. He turns
to the visitor.
'7 know the historical records
show me getting started in
Turkey in the 4th Century as
Hagios Nikolaos, or Saint
Nicholas. Those were heady
days, serving as the Bishop of
Myra — back then it was part of
Greece — and spending my
younger days travelling to
Palestine and Egypt. I recall the
pain of being imprisoned for
one's beliefs, of being held
captive by one Emperor and
freed by another.
"Through all of my
adventures, the need to give was
constant. I recognized that there
was always someone worse off
than me who needed my help.
They say I used to give coins to
people in need — anonymously
of course — and that 1 was a
great and helpful friend to every
child I met. Neither of which I'll
deny.
'7 became the patron saint of
children, of course, but also of
bakers, pawnbrokers, prisoners,
sailors, shopkeepers and wolves.
There are relics of me. I'm told,
in the basilica of St. Nicola, in
Bari, Italy. Relics! Look at me!"
He places his hands on his bell)
and cuts loose with a laugh that
shakes his frame. "Ho! Ho! Do 1
look like a relic to you?"
Not at all. Claus leans back in
his chair.
"You look at me and you see
a toymaker, a fun -loving old
gent, someone dedicated to the
notion of all the bountiful treats
and toys and goodies that we
associate with Christmas," he
says. "But do you realize how
many different contributors
created this image for you? My
old spirit owes as much of its
existence to pagan rituals as to
Christian practice — of people
trying to survive through the
bleak, cold winter months,
opening their store of food and
goods and having a winter feast
to build up hope that spring
would come. I am a part of that
tradition.
"The gift -bearing, the beard,
and the fur robes came from the
Three Wise Men, all of them
bearded gift -givers from the
Orient. And the Romans gave
gifts during their pagan
Saturnalian festival."
The address, the geographic
North Pole, was chosen to
ensure there would be no
identified connection with any
one country.
"Smack dab on top of the
world," he says with a wink.
His comment is cut short by
the arrival of Mrs. Claus with a
plate of chocolate chip cookies,
each easily as big around and as
thick as one of Santa's own
hands.
He offers a cookie, then takes
one for himself. He mentions
that, in some places, he wasn't
always considered a kindly man.
"Look at how I carne to be in
Finland. There I'm called
Joulupukki, or Yule Buck. In the
old days, pagan festivals were
held on the shortest days of the
year, in December, to ward off
evil spirits. The spirits who
always wore goat skins and
horns, loved to frighten children
and demand gifts to ensure that
no havoc would be caused. I
was a Goat God, by golly!
"But the people who really
get credit for my modem image
are a poet. Clement C. Moore,
who wrote A Visit from St.
Nicholas in 1823, and a
newspaper artist, Thomas Nast,
who created a picture of me
sitting atop a chimney for an
issue of Harper's Weekly
magazine in around 1890. Thi,
Moore fellow saw me as having.
and I'll quote him 'A broad face
and a little round belly, that
shook, when he laughed. like a
bowl full of jelly.' Of course,
you can also see that comedian,
Tim Allen, doing a pretty good

Asked how he has lived this
long, he leans back, pondering
the question for a long moment,
pulling at his beard. He smiles.
"I really don't have an answer
to that one," he says, reaching
for another cookie. "You know,
I was put on this earth for a
purpose. It's a matter of faith.
Whatever power put me here
has decided to keep me here.
And I don't ask questions. I'm a
man, after all, just a mortal man
who loves to make children
happy."
A small man with slightly
pointed ears and dressed in a
green smock, knocks on the
door. It's time to look over the
reindeer, he says.
At the stable, Claus checks
the condition of his team. He
has assembled eight of them in
this area. although other
reindeer wander in and out of
the stable at will, nibbling at the
oats and hay proffered by
Claus's many assistants. A ninth
member of the team, a strapping
reindeer with a large red nose,
wanders into the barn a few
minutes later.
"You may think I'm strictly a
product of American mass
merchandising," Claus says,
picking up the thread of his
story. "Certainly, a lot of my
characteristics were defined in
the last hundred years or so,
thanks to the media, such as the
reindeer here, the filling of
Christmas stockings with
presents, my descent down the

As he speaks, Claus gets the

shelf, then moves outside. The
reindeer follow. The wind has
picked up, nipping at the noses
and the cars of everyone outside.
'Time for a test run," he says.
He eases the team into its
harness as his assistants
manoeuvre his sled into place.
The sled looks brand-new,
painted in green and red and
trimmed in gold.
"Image!" Claus says with a
chuckle, pausing. "All of these
characteristics have provided
people with an image to place
around a spirit that will never be
extinguished. It's the spirit of
giving. It's safe to say there's a
bit of me in just about
everybody.
"You really don't need an
image of me to believe in me, do
you? Just look inside yourself.
I'm there."
He climbs into the sled. The
leather reins snap in the wind.
"rll see you on Christmas Eve'"
he says, as he waves. The team
takes off, running easily across
the snow, then rising into the
sky, soon to be lost from sight

sations against the school's teachers and stu-
dent bode has been met, not surprisingh.
with shock and anger. In a letter to the News
Ad%ertiser, teacher M. Perrault sass: `If the
journalist who wrote the article had bothered
to come to Pickering, to talk to the students
and staff of this outstanding high school, she
would have discovered a communith of near -
h 20M individuals who work, pla. and suc-
ceed together, harmoniously, day 2f9er day.'
Roland Rutland, chairman of the Social
Development Council of Ajax and Pickering's
race relations committee — and a man who
makes it his business to remain knowledge-
able on the subject — confessed shock and a-
mazement at the actions of the south -Asian
parents in this instance. "For all the short-
comings they may have in other areas, the
Durham Board of Education has been ea-
tremeh proactive when it comes to racial is-
sues." he says. "1 wish all boards were as good
as Durham when it comes to this."
The word from individual teachers and in-
dividual students is unanimous — that the
fight which so upset the community was, just
as police reported, a fight not racially based.
The picketing by students was, just as the
school reported, a protest that their school
was being unfairly portrayed in the media as
nothing more than a racial hotbed.
U■fortuaatdy, in lingeatiag their treat -
meat by the media, the students were theta m -
ported as protesting the mnnufactured rate
,problem in their school. The newspaper,
radio, and TV reporters got it wrong —
agaia! And this error is what went out over
the wires— to be picked up in New York and
elsewhere.
Pickering does have its problems — what
school doesn't — but by and large, anyone
wiiiling to take time to look will findthat it's
still a pretty good school.
But how many people will get to read, or
bear, about a ochoof which has been working,
consistently, to get its act together? Good
news doesn't travel fast.

The 13 -year-old litigation between the
Town of Pickering and the Pickering
Harbour Company over ownership and
control of Frenchman's Bay may be
resolved between the two parties, but local
Pickering residents have many unanswered
questions regarding the contract which
sonic are calling a "done deal" that was
sioned lxhind closed doors with no public
Process.
And that has long-time Pickering
resident Bev Mitchell, and the community
association she belongs to, furious over
what Mitchell feels Pickering residents
have lost in the future development of
Frenchman's Bay.
During a recently held public
information meeting attended by town
officials and Pickering Harbour Company
owner Harold Hough, many residents used
the forum to vent hostility towards the
officials and to ask questions about the
development of the north end of
Frenchman's Bay on Begley Street, where
Hough is proposing to build 39
townhouses and a 120 -unit apartment
building.
Mitchell, through questioning of Mayor
Arthurs at the meeting, discovered that the
proposed construction will take place
without coming before Pickering council
first. Anhurs said the development does
not have to come before council because
the residential zoning of the land is in
place and complies with the development
proposal.
Mitchell admits that, technically,
Pickcrine council has done nothing wrong
but argues. "It doesn't make it right. They
have left out the most important step —
public process."
According to municipal affairs (the
government political watchdog), there is
little if anything Pickering residents can do
now because the public had a chance to
speak out about the proposal..
Pickering town manager Tim Sheffield
is on record as saying the public did have
several opportunities to question future
land development on Begley Street

through Pickering Official Plan
Amendment meetings, advertised and held
in public for the benefit of the community
to question land uses.
According to Sheffield, the public could
have brought the Begley Street residential
zoning issue before council as early as
1960 when the zoning was put in place.
"There is a similar development on the
other side of the street," Sheffield says.
"So why wouldn't people expect something
similar to be built on this side (Begley
Street)?"
But Mitchell balked at the suggestion,
saying that since no one knew there was an
application submitted to the town for
development of the land until recently,
what would the residents question?
Community association groups have
informed The Original Bay News that they
will hold public meetings with Pickering
councillors and staff members in January,
in an attempt to have their concerns
addressed and have "public input into this
issue," Mitchell said

While images of Santa

many in Durham Region, for
others it's a time of latkes and
..t dreidels, gelt and the Menorah.
And stories of Judah Macabee
O and the sacrifice of a woman
Nom named Hannah. Welcome to
Festival of Lights, or
g Hanukkah, a special time of
%c the year for Jews.
A celebration lasting eight
days, it commemorates the
events in 165 B.C.E. (Before
Common Era) when the forces
of Judah Macabee, a freedom
fighter leading a ragtag army
of rebels linked by a common,
undying belief in God. retook
the Temple of Jerusalem from
the pagan Syrians, worshippers
of Greek idolatry. The event
re-established the Jewish
religion in the Holy Land after
two centuries of oppression.
When the Macabees fixed
up the temple, they found only
enough holy oil to light the
Menorah, a commemorative
candelabra. for a single day.
But the miracle of the time was
that the oil lasted for eight
days, giving the Jews time to
find new oil as they re-
dedicated their temple.
Hanukkah. or "dedication"
in Hebrew, is a singular time
of the year. For Harley
Saltzman, president of B'nai
Shalom V'Tikvah synagogue
in Ajax, it's a time to
remember the past — and plan
for the future.
Saltzman heads a
congregation of 43 families,
the sole congregation of
Reform Jews in Durham
Region (Oshawa is home to an
Orthodox synagogue),
of peace and hope
comprising a geographic area
that stretches from east of
Oshawa to West Hill and north
to Port Perry. The two-year-
old organization got its start in
the Jewish Families of Durham
Region.
"We polled the community
and decided Reform was the
way to go," says Saltzman.
The Toronto-based Canadian
Council on Reform Judaism
helped in getting the
congregation established.
Classes for children were
arranged with the help of the
Durham Board of Education's
Peter Fawcett, head of the
heritage language program.
"We haven't had any obstacles
at all" in establishing the
synagogue. says Saltzman, an
Ajax resident, certified general
accountant, and father of six-
year-old Rebecca Sarah.
Eli Edelson, vice-president
of the synagogue and a father
of three grown children. said
his experience during 25 years
at Temple Israel in Ottawa
helped the group prepare for
the synagogue's establishment.
Being pan of the community is
vital — as is the need for
acceptance by it. The group
found a helping hand in Ajax's
St. Paul's United Church — it
provides facilities for the
synagogue, whose name means
Children of Peace and Hope.
"They went out of their
way," says Saltzman of the
church with a 40 -year history
in the town. "rve never seen a
.religious organization go out
of its way like that for another
religious group."
Karen Smart, St. Paul's
pastoral assistant, says the
church was pleased to help.
"We live by the motto 'The

church with the open arms.'
We were delighted that it
could be used for what it was
meant to be used for, and that
is to worship God. We're
happy to have them in the
community and growing in the
community."
Part of the group's challenge
was in getting a rabbi to
conduct services. Again the
reform council helped by
linking them up with Rabbi
Elyse Goldstein of Toronto.
"We're very fortunate to have
her work with our group," says
Edelson. "She is, in my
opinion, one of the best rabbis
in North America."
Saltzman agrees. "She is
phenomenal. She's a very well -
renowned member of our
Jewish community.
An Orthodox Jewish
community of about 60
families has existed in Oshawa
for many years, but B'nai
Shalom VTikvah saw a greater
leaning toward the Reform
side. There are three branches
of Judaism: Orthodox,
following the strictest precepts
of the religion, including
eating only specially -prepared
kosher foods and adhering to
specific dietary and social
restrictions; Conservative,
which looks to tradition to find
answers to modem problems;
and Reform, which believes in
adapting tradition to meet the
modem -day needs of Jews.
Positive community
awareness of the Jewish
community is on the rise,
Saltzman says. Stores like The
SuperCentre are beginning to
stock foods in preparation for
Jewish holidays. "It's an
awakening, an awareness of
the Jewish community out
here.
Being a pioneer in a
community often marred by
anti-Semitism can be
difficult."
He says that eduction is the
key to eradicating fear and
ignorance. "If a child is saying
it, it's only reflecting the
parents. It's a difficult
situation. When I am
confronted with racism, it's
more of a case of trying to
educate the person. The issue
is not to sit idly by and take it.
You have to address the issue."
Hanukkah (or Chanukah —
either spelling is correct) is
one of the happiest times of the
year in Jewish culture.
Literally a festival of lights, it
celebrates freedom from
oppression and justice.
Tradition in Hanukkah
focuses on the Menorah, a
nine -branched candelabra.
Every day, a candle is lit, using
one candle called the
shammash (servant) to light
the others. Eight days
represents the length of time
the one day's worth of holy oil
burned in the Temple of
Jerusalem after Judah
Macabee's forces retook it
following heavy fighting. The
Menorah is a sign of light.
truth and liberty and is
traditionally placed near a
window so that it is highly
visible.
Hanukkah is also a time of
child's play, using a spinning
top called the dreidel,
inscribed with four Hebrew
letters standing for Nes Gadol
Hayah Sham or "a great
miracle happened there."
Children also receive small
gifts and Hanukkah gelt,
chocolate coins covered in foil.
And it's a time of good eating,
from latkes (similar in size and
texture to pancakes) to other
foods, many of which are

Edelson says his family will

It's a very happy time, a

Hospital lights u festive" season
by Edwin Mercurio
Trees in winter hibernation
came alive with Christmas
lights at Ajax and Pickering
General Hospital in the 8th
annual Lighting of the Lights.
Kids in strollers, toddlers
bundled in triple layers of
winter clothes, parents and
public officials huddled close
to each other to celebrate the
advent of Christmas and the
much awaited arrival of Santa
Claus from the North Pole via
the Santa Express. Visitors
were given hot chocolate to
help them withstand the
extremely cold evening and
patients of the hospital were
treated to a rousing chorus of
cheers and "Merry Christmas"
by the large crowd.
Hospital chair Joe
Atkinson, who emceed the
^vent, noted that, "Over the
,nears the residents of Ajax and
Pickering have demonstrated
in a very real way just how
important the Ajax and
Pickering General Hospital is.
One of the things that define a
community." he said. "is how
citizens deal with each other.
how we as a community meet
the needs of the community.
And that all starts at the top.
Because if we have
community leaders that
respect that kind of
philosophy, they not only
support us but they
demonstrate their support."
Atkinson acknowledged the
support given by both Ajax
and Pickering councils and
thanked former Mayor James
Witty for the services he has
given the town of Ajax.
"I must admit that I really
enjoyed my seven years as
mayor of the town of Ajax,"
Witty told the crowd. "I have
very proud memories of the
town of Ajax and wish
everyone a very Merry
Christmas and a happy and
prosperous New Year."
Durham MP Dan
McTeague and hospital
foundation chair Nancy
Maxwell also spoke at the
event.
Special recognition was
given by the hospital
foundation to the Kinsmen
Club of Aiax. and cadent
Doug Rodmell, who donated a
cheque of $20,000, the second
installment of the group's
$100,000 commitment to the
hospital. Last year, the
organization completed its
commitment of $150,000
which was spread over five
years for the APGH
foundation.
According to Rodmell, the
Kinsmen Club of Ajax has
been able to raise these
various amounts through
projects such as Bingo,
Victoria Day fireworks, and
steak barbecue sales.
Maxwell also thanked the
University of Toronto, Ajax
Campus Graduates for their
cheque donation of $7.500.
Representing the alumni were
Robby Robinson, Chris Hinde
and Don Cockburn.
The 8th annual Lighting of
the Lights was a huge success

by Ernie Brown. one of the
stars of the show. Brown

Garvin Farr increasing the talents of others
by Larry Codd
Have you ever met someone

Born in Manchester,
England, Farr came from a
i'amily with no special interest
in music, yet as a chi1ld he loved
to sing and performed in church
ichoirs before his family
Jemiigrated to Canada in 1956.
Failing to make a choir in
Toronto, he persisted through a
debilitating voice change and
confusion as to whether he was

tenor, before eventually being

the fledgling company's first
three plays.
Farr doesn't call it "amateur
theatre." Preferring -little
theatre," he is quick to note that
"there is nothing amateur about
it. Family and friends come
away from these productions
with new respect for the
participants' talents."
Nowadays, Farr limits his
theatrical involvement to
directing his wife. He has
enough to do: when not busy
with his daytime job, the Ajax
resident teaches music and ear
at Durham Music.
Always enthusiastic no
matter which art he happens to
be engaged in, Garvin Farr
continues to inspire those
around him to reach for the
heights. Perhaps his greatest gift
will prove to be that of
nurturing and encouraging the
creative brilliance he finds in
others.

A HELPING HAND
In your lifetime you have cooked enough meals to feed

mowed the equivalent of SO golf courses, and
raked the leaves of a thousand trees.

Pickering Swim Club hosts
another Christmas classic
hat a classic. Over the weekend, nearly 6(X)
swimmers came to Pickering for the 9th
Annual Christmas Classic Swim Meet held
by the Pickering Swim Club.
It was the biggest gathering of competitors in the nine
years of the meet, and the host club turned out some
wonderful performances.
Most notable was the weekend Warren Barnes and
Karen Gerroir had in the waters at the Pickering
Recreation Complex.
Barnes finished the meet with four medals while
Gerroir ended the competition with five medals. Gerroir
collected two gold (50m freestyle and 200m
backstroke), two silver (100m backstroke and 100m
freestyle) and a bronze (200m freestyle). Meanwhile,
Barnes continued to dominate in his best event.
For 10 -year-old Barnes, winning his breaststroke
races is becoming old hat. Barites didn't disappoint the
hometown faithful when he won the 50m, 100m and
200m breaststroke events. On the way he also collected
a bronze in the 50m butterfly.
"He wins those races (breaststroke) easily," said PSC
oach Bob Boadway. "He loves to race. He almost runs
o the starting block. It doesn't matter to him if he
oesn't win."
Boadway wanted to give his future star some extra
ives into the pool by entering him in all the events. In
e future, Boadway believes Barnes will be a strong
dividual medley swimmer, thus the opportunity to
prove his strokes over the weekend. Overall, Barnes
am in 11 events and posted his best personal time in
e 200m breaststroke during the meet.
"One day we hope he'll be a great individual medley
swimmer," says Boadway.
Ranked number one in the country in the
breaststroke, it was no surprise to see Barnes swim
away with a handful of medals at the Christmas meet.
"He listens to you when you talk to him." says
Boadway. "one day he'll break provincial records."
With the club battling the flu bug, Boadway did not
have his mass numbers out to participate. Despite
everything, Boadway was pleased with the results over
the weekend and is now looking forward to some time
off over the holidays.
"By in -long, we had a few good swims," says
Boadway. "We were looking more at kids to swim
events they don't usually swim because they were at
their home pool. The overall team picture is what we're
really pleased with. The team progress is really
important."
Eighteen clubs competed at the Classic, with 593
swimmers taking part in the meet. Pickering finished in
the top five and Boadway was delighted with the
individual swim times some of his athletes
accomplished over the weekend.
"We had a very big percentage of best times," says
Boadway. "Even the ones who were sick were doing the
best they could. The kids are trying to improve their
times; that's what it's all about.
"If we win some medals, it's gravy. But we're
orientated towards self-improvement."
Other individuals who collected some hardware at the
meet were Stephanie Wilkinson (silver in the 400m
freestyle), Colin Russell (silver in the 400m freestyle)
and Derrick Howard who collected a bronze in the
200m butterfly and silver in the 400m freestyle.
