Over 300 attend free program to assist

A spokesman for a local
company offering a free
program to assist unemployed
people said he was "overawed"
when more than 300 people
showed up at the first meeting.
That was the reaction of
Roger Wade, manager of
career counselling services
with Minacs and Associates, to
the Oct. 17 turnout. He had
estimated that an optimistic
number would be 150.
..The next meeting (on Oct.
24 ) will be a bit of a test for
me because the majority said
they were coming back. The
reaction 1 have had this week
is that people are telling other
people they like what they
heard." he said.
Wade noted that he took in
180 resumes at the meeting
and, alter looking them over, it
is evident that many of those
who submitted them need help
because the majority are
poorly prepared.
"You can't even tell what
the main job skill is for many
of the people by the way the
resumes were written. That is
one thing that we are going to
show them how to do at the
next meeting," he promises.

Earlier this month, Wade
told ';ckering council that
Minacs would be offering free
four-hour sessions, once a
week, to assist unemployed
people in Durham in acquiring
job skills and making contacts
that could lead to a job.
The program, known as
W.I.N. (Weekly Interaction
Network), is intended also to
be a weekly support group
meeting that will feature
speakers drawn from the local
business community. The
meetings are scheduled to be
held every Tuesday in meeting
rooms A and B at the
Pickering Recreation Complex
beginning at 8 am. and ending
at noon.
He says that he is setting up
the next meeting with tables
and chairs so people will have
a place to work. But, he says,
that if large numbers of people
continue to show up for the
next few meetings, then other
premises may have to be
found.
In addition, he says that he
is going to have some good
people from industry at
upcoming meetings talking to
the attendees. However, he
says that he is not getting the
reaction he hoped from
industry inputting real jobs.
While Wade had hoped to
have many job postings at the
fust meeting, in fact there were
only eight and he couldn't post
them because of the large
crowd. Instead he read out the
jobs from the podium and then
accepted resumds. He said that
as a result some people have
been granted interviews.
He says that of the 200
surveys that were handed out
at the meeting 150 people
responded that they were out
of work; the rest were not
satisfied with their present job.
While everyone is welcome
at the meetings, Wade says
that with only three or four
counsellors accompanying him
he would prefer fewer people
so they could work more
effectively in groups.
At the first meeting, he
estimates 60 per cent were
female but there was equal
distribution from all age
groups and their jobs ranged
from laborers to civil engineers
to one who was an

The Diabetes Education
Centre is looking forward to

Diabetes Education Session
again. The first three sessions
included topics such as Latest
Devices to Assist in Diabetes
Management, What is New in
the Diabetic Diet and Switch
from Beef/Pork Insulin to
Human Insulin. The sessions
were successful and
extremely beneficial to those
who attended.
The topic of the fourth
session is Lifestyle Changes -
Stress and would be
beneficial to anyone learning
to live with diabetes. The
series will continue Wed.,
Nov. 8 from 7 to 8 p.m., in

Nov. 15 will be the next
presentation where Weight
Management and Type II
Diabetes will be discussed.

weight as par of their diabetes

Student Morgan Currie
Currie goes to Queen's Park

When Pickering Grade 8 student Morgan
Currie was elected to the Ontario legislature in
the June provincial election, she never actually
thought she would be at Queen's Park for the
opening of the real thing.
But Morgan did get invited by Janet Ecker,
newly elected MPP for Durham West, and she
was there on Sept. 27 for the Speech from the
Th ronc.
Morgan, now 14 and a Grade 9 student at St.
Mary's Catholic Secondary School, won a mock
election at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Separate
School that ran concurrently with the provincial
election campaign when she was assigned the
role of Janet Ecker by her teacher Emmett
Chaisson, as a history project.
Mr. Chaisson says that he selected two sets of
three students from his Grade 8 class to
represent the candidates for the four Durham
ridinim which meant that 24 students in total
played the parts of the candidates. Other
students were assigned the roles of the three
pam leaders and to be �ntunerator% or election
officials. Students from two other grade classes
were the voters and they listened to the

candidates' speeches, which included a leaders'
debate, and ultimately voted at the same time
adults across Ontario were voting.
Mr. Chaisson said that his students really
enjoyed the project which began on the day the
election was called and ran for the six weeks of
the campaign. Each student running for office as
a particular candidate had to get as much
literature as possible and study it — they had to
know the issues and he able to talk about them.
"Geeing up in front of a class and speaking is
an important skill that is often forgotten. But I
think that it is one that becomes important later
on," Chaisson says.
,Morgan admits that when she was first
assigned the task she was a bit nervous. "I
thought that poetics was really complicated but
I really got into it and enjoyed it. I learned a
lot," she says.
As part of her preparation to be Ms. Ecker,
Morgan went to the Conservative candidate's
election office and picked up some literature.
She also prepared election signs and did some
campaigning and speech -making to her fellow
students before election daN .

Then, Ms. Ecker's office called and invited
Morgan to come to her Queen's Park office and
meet the MPP who has subsequently been
appointed parliamentary assistant to the minister
of community and social services, and be her
special guest for the opening of the legislature.
"I think that Ms. Ecker is really nice," says
Morgan, who was accompanied by her father. "I
felt really honored to be asked to go to the
legislature. It's not an everyday thing; not a lot
of kids my age get invited to such a special
event."
Ms. Ecker says, "I was very impressed with
the work Morgan had done in preparing for the
election and I thought she would appreciate a
chance to observe the formal legislative aspects.
I commend St. Isaac Jogues for providing
students with an excellent hands-on civics
lesson."
The Durham West MPP added that the more
students can learn about the election process, the
better equipped they will be to make intelligent
decisions as voters.

What started seven years ago as a home
hobby, and a well-intentioned deed of helping
friends with their giftwraps, has blossomed into
a unique business, the owner of The Original
Badmi Kase says.
"I always loved gifts, tiny things with glass
and Victorian crafts. I wrap an my gifts- Pbople
would come to me with all these things and atilt
me to do their giftwrapping. I really branched
out from then and decided to' get into this
business," says Marion Cozens who recently

Cozens relates that from giftwrapping, she

Crazy for dogs

Come out and feel the excitement! See your
favorite dogs at the second annual Trillium
Dog Fanciers show which promises to feature
some of the best purebreds in Ontario, from
Oct. 27 to 29 at the Metro East Trade Centre.
Included will be all kinds of Retrievers,
Setters, Pointers and Springers. There will also
be specialty shows featuring Afghan Hounds
and Soft Coated Terriers on Saturday night,
with prizes and cups to be won.
A grooming area for the dogs will provide a
chance for visitors to stop and chat and ask
questions of the handlers and see all the
different breeds which will be ready and
waiting to get out to the show ring to show off
their stuff. As well, a concession area will
allow dog owners to buy their dog a new toy,
chewv, or leash; or even get a T-shirt made
with their favorite pup on it.
With seven different groups in the show —
.`rom sporting dogs to working dogs to herding
dogs — judges from places like Spain,
Wisconsin, Texas and Ontario will be on hand
to give out the awards. Each dog will be
judged by set breed standards, such as how the
dog stands, the shape of its head and chest,
how it moves, and the overall standard of the
dog.
'The dogs are judged on how smooth their
gait is," says Heather Robertson, a champion
dog owner. "It's what I call a dog's trot, which
is between a walk and a run."
Robertson's dog Trebor (which is part of
their lat name• spelled backwards), is one of
the few Curly Coated Retrievers in Canada.
While Trebor is the dog's family name, he
must also have a registered name for the
Canada Kennel Club (CKC) since he is a show
dog. His registered name is Krisroy Autumn
Sun, after the Krisroy Kennels in Huntsville.
"There are only three breeders in Canada for
Curly Coats," Robertson says. `They're a rare
breed of hunting dogs"
In the world of show dogs, many owners
hire a professional dog handler to take their
dog to the shows. The Robertsons also do so.
With so many shows, it can become too much
for some owners to take their dog to every
show, for the whole day.
"Over the spring, Trebor went to about 200
shows and was gone for about four -and -a -half
months," she says.
According to the Robertsons, the early
morning periods of the different shows can be
noisy and hectic since all the dogs are getting
groomed and ready for their time in front of
the judges. Some dogs, like the Dawin
Poodles, take longer to get ready because their
fur must be brushed and trimmed, while others
like the Curly Coat take only a few moments.
The level of competitiveness gets tougher
the higher up the owner and dog go as well,
but once the show is over, says Ian Robertson,
there is a 'real camaraderie.'
Aside from the show there is also the
socialization of the dogs to consider while
being around other dogs, adults and children.
As a result, the Robertsons recommend that
people, when buying, look for a breed with a
good temperament.. which will also end up
showing well with the judges.
"I believe that dog lovers, or those who
want to buy a dog, should take the time and
care to research what kind of dog they want,"
Ian says_ 'They should match the personality
and lifestyle of the owner to the dog."
Ultimately though, the Robertsons believe
that although the dogs are in the show, they are
still the owners' pets_
"We're dog crazy," Robertson admits. "He's
more of a pet, really ... but he also happens to
show well."

For several weeks now, rumors have been

although our sources are solid and 140 per
icent reliable, we find it difficult to report
what we know as truth — until the facts are

The figures on "Claredome" "indeed a
bad penny — are about to surface; the

an appraisal anyway? And why all the

Initially, Pickering taxpayers were told
that land for the new facility "needed" in
Claremont would be funded by the sale of
other public properties, such as the hamlet's
old fireball downtown. Great, provided
:anyone would buy it. But were councillors
really prepared to pay more than the
:,appraised value for any land the town was
+expecting to purchase?
When we asked about appraisal and sale
'figures, not surprisingly we were stonewalled
by town staff. The Claremont deal, a
conditional offer and signed back-, closes on
October 31st. With in camera sessinns now
ever, it will soon come to council, where it is
expected to be ratified. And wiH anybody
notice if we just pay an extra $100,400?
Will the feds notice? Or Mike Harris?

when women's shelters and charitable
groups are being closed down or thrown to
the wall, will the province look the other way
while Pickering carries on witb a

Claredome robs taxpayers again

The "Claredome" project is like a bad penny
that just keeps coming back.
If you will recall, the town of Pickering chose
to use its funds along with provincial and federal
infrastructure dollars to build a recreation centre
in downtown Claremont (pop. of the hamlet of
about 200 homes).
The project would cost in the trillions when all
is said and done of "hard to come by" taxpayers'
dollars. Undaunted Pickering council proceeded
with plans to proceed despite the fact the
engineers indicated that the septic system could
not support many planned functions and activities
it was meant to serve.
Taxpayer dollars have already purchased one
home to make room for the project (100 per cent
funded by Pickering dollars). Now I hear that the
same council has put forward an offer nearly
$100,000 in excess of a current appraised value to
complete yet another acquisition_
This is typical of the lack of business sense that
government suffers from. Who in their right mind
would purchase property with taxpayer funds for
substantially more than the independently
appraised market value? Tell me it isn't so!
Perhaps Mike Harris and his colleagues can do
something with his common sense revolution and
stop the wasteful spending about to happen in
Claremont? Is Pickering so flush that they can pay
over market value? Oh well, its only taxpayers'
money!

Ontario Hydros, Pickering Nuclear
Division's "Generating Hope Campaign" has
raised almost $120,000 in support of United
Way and other charitable organizations.
"We're proud that our employees have
given so generously to support our campaign
to help others in our community," says
campaign organizer Don Terry.
"And we're especially proud of the services
so many of our employees perform as
volunteers in the local communities."
The matey was raised through a number of
events and payroll deduction pledge cards
sent to Pickering's 2,400 employees.
Over the past three years Pickering Nuclear
Division raised about $450,000.

barbecue, held on Sept. 9.
"Everyone got involved and
did something," explained Mari
Beth. "The children in the
community delivered invitations
to the area houses, neighbors
solicited donations of food and
supplies, and still others offered
the use of their barbecues for the
function."
Food was donated by
Supercentre in Pickering and
Weston Bakery. In total,
residents spent about $90 to fund
the event and in the end made a
profit of $134 which was
donated to the library.

Lock your garage doors. That's the advice
from Durham Regional Police to Ajax
residents after a run of night-time break-ins
recently.
Inspector John Hamilton of 24 Division says
there have been break-ins all over Ajax where
thieves have entered through closed, but
unlocked, garage doors to steal everything
from bicycles to power tools. In three instances
they proceeded from the garages through
interior doors into the homes while residents
were absent. Inspector Hamilton says, "Ajax is
a safe place to live, but citizens have to assist
police by locking their doors and supplying
information to us when possible."
In contrast. Inspector Bruce Pugh says that
the break-ins in Pickering have slowed over the
last couple of weeks, a pattem which he says is
consistent for this time of year when the kids
are back in school. However, he cautions that
tires, especially those mounted on the rear
exterior of trucks, have been a popular target
lately. He says one witness reported that it took
a thief a mere 12 seconds to remove a fire from
a parked truck.
Staff Sergeant Sandy Ryrie says that crime
is in a continual cycle. While the perception

may be that crime is getting worse, the
statistics don't support it. He says, "It's a see-
saw all the time. Whitby was high for awhile
and then it moved into Pickering. The numbers
go up and down and the areas change."
Residential break-ins for the Pickering/Ajax
area were up 10.9 per cent in the first half of
1995 over the same period last year, but
commercial break-ins were down 14 per cent.
Crimes against persons — including murders
— are also down. In 1991 there were 13
murders in Durham as compared to only five in
1993 and one so far this year.
Inspector Hamilton says, "No matter which
town. village or city you live in there is going
to be crime." He says the best way to protect
yourself is to take precautions beforehand such
as locking the doors and windows. He also
recommends engraving your license number or
valuables. Hand engravers are available to the
public through local police stations.
He adds. "If someone comes to your door
asking for John Smith when no John Smitt;
lives there, or asks you if you want to buy
encyclopedias, they may be casing your house.
Observe the person, get a description. and it
