Buckle up precious passengers
October is "Seatbelt Awareness Month" in Ontario.
The Durham Region Health Department has organized a car seat safety
clinic in order to each as many parents about the importaoee of using
child restraint systems properly. Similar clinics bead in other parts of
Canada have found that approaimalely 75 per cent of cars inspected did
not have properly installed systems. Correctly restrained children are
seven times more likely to escape death or major injury in a ar aecidemt.
The clinic will be held on Sat., Sept. 30, 1995, from 10 am. to 2 pm.
at the northwest end of the Oshawa Centre. Car -owners can drive thmugh
a checkpoint lane and receive a free, no -penalty inspection of their child
restraint system. The whole check-up will take only a few minutes, and
will be done by a health nurse and a Durham Regional Police auxiliary
officer.
Tire Canadian Automobile Association, the Durham Regional Police
Service, General Motors of Canada, the Oshawa Centre, and the Durham
Region Health Department will assist each other in presenting this event.

Free- program to assist in job search

A local career counselling
service company will be
offering a free program to
assist unemployed people in
Durham to find jobs.
Roger Wade, manager of
career counselling services
with Minacs and Associates,
told Pickering council Monday
night that beginning on Oct. 17
the company will be offering a
weekly four-hour program to
assist unemployed people in
Durham to acquire skills and
make contacts that could lead
to a job.
- The program, to be known
as W.I.N. (Weekly Interaction
Network), is intended to be a
weekly support group meeting
which will feature guest
speakers drawn from the local
business communities.
Sessions will be held in arena
meeting rooms A and B at the
Pickering Recreation Complex
beginning at 8 am. and ending
at noon.
Guest speakers will be
reviewing a number of areas
such as how to break through
barriers to secure employment,
whether moving to a better

Councillor Sherry Senis says.
She feels that if council has
items to deal with that are
going to take a long time, then
they should be dealt with after
the council meeting, not
before.
"It's ironic that three of the
items that we dealt with in the
council meeting concerned

"It's too confusing to the
public and it's unfair. We are
all to blame as councillors and
we had better all do our part to
be more sensitive to the people
we represent and change this."

inconvenienced than the
public. We have to be much
more conscientious. I'll do my

Councillor Dave Ryan says
that councillors should make
every effort to get into the
council chambers on time. He
says that councillors
themselves have been
conscious of the problem and
have talked about it.
"It's a question of the
intensity of the debate that is
going on. The good news for
your readers is we are not
taking the issues lightly. We
will continue to address it."

Enrico Pistritto. He says that
sometimes councillors get so
wrapped up in an issue that
they lose track of time, but he
says they should stop at 7:30
p.m. and continue after the
council meeting if necessary.
"I think it's an excellent
point and by bringing it out it's
something we will address and
probably make changes to," he
commented after the council
meeting.
He says that at Monday's
meeting there was a solicitor
present to deal with a
confidential matter but
acknowledged, "Maybe we
should have asked her to stay;
that way we are only
inconveniencing one person
instead of a whole bunch of
people."
Mayor Wayne Arthurs says
that the pre -council sessions
are administration meetings
and they are an opportunity for
staff to ask for direction from
council in some things that
they might be working on.

401, the Pickering Home &
Design Centre has been a
unique one-stop shopping
centre for the home since it
opened in 1988. Although we
have nearly 20 stores that carry
furnishings, appliances,
custom kitchens, linens,
accessories, lighting, fabrics,
paint and wallcoverings,
window treatments, etc., we
also have stores that cater to
hobbies and leisure time
pursuits.
It began with Home Leisure
Upgrades who specialize in
spas and billiard tables.
Crafter's Marketplace, which
showcases the merchandise of
hundreds of talented arts and
crafts people, joined the centre
in 1994. The most recent
addition is Michaels, the Arts
and Crafts Superstore, which
has been a resounding success
with do-it-yourselfers since it
opened in May of this year.
Now Sportmart, Canada's
Sport Champion, will be
announcing its grand opening
date very shortly.
It is because of this growing
segment of our retail space that
we are changing our name
from the Pickering Home &
Design Centre to the Pickering
Home & Leisure Centre,
which we feel is more
descriptive of the products and
services available in our stores.

A year as the Barrie
Examiner's City Hall reporter
was quickly followed by
another at the Hamilton
Spectator. But it took a plum
assignment at the Kingston
Whig Standard to finally make
him settle for awhile.
For four years, "I was the
only penitentiary reporter in
Canada," he says. In addition
to reporting on conditions and
interviewing inmates in five
institutions, he covered riots
and escapes. He also received
a national newspaper award
nomination, worked freelance
on the side, and received an
unexpected job offer from a
government ministry.
"I took the job mainly
because of the money," he
laughs. During the next 14

Moving up the ladder,
Richard became International
Media Relations Officer for
the ministry of trade, often
representing Canada abroad;
on one trip he met U.S.
President Ronald Reagan. In
1986, he married Pauline, an
administrative assistant in a
deputy minister's office.
In 1989, taking advantage of
a voluntary exit opportunity,
Richard left the government to
return to school and take the
four courses he needed to
become a teacher. And the
following year, he began
teaching — first at Donevan in
Oshawa, then at Central, and
finally at Pickering High
School, where he is now in this
third year, teaching Media and
English.
In 1990, Richard and
Pauline adopted two babies
from Mnduras: a boy and a
girt, not related to each other.
Both started kindergarten last
week. Richard describes his
days with two five -year-olds as
"hecxic..hectic."
Diagnosed in 1994 with
Macular Degeneration — an
eye disease which can be
progressive and for which
there is no cure — Richard
recently formed a support
group which meets once a
month in Toronto. Fortunately,
still able to drive, he manages
to do his close-up work with
assistance from halogen lights.

Beth and Mark Wagschal,
new co -pastors at Pickering's
Peace Lutheran Church, met in
Scarsdale, N.Y. in 1966 and
were married in Waterloo,
Ont. in 1972.
They have been active
members of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Canada
through associations with
Peace Lutheran
Mount Zion Lutheran Church
in Waterloo, First Lutheran in
Calgary and Faith Lutheran
also in Calgary. It was their
experiences through serving
on committees and church
councils, attending many adult
education classes and leading
classes and retreats, which
brought them to Pickering.
As a "second career"
decision and in response to
"God's call," they entered the
Lutheran Theological
Seminary in Saskatoon
together and earned M -Div -'s
in 1988. Teamwork was
stressed in their school and
home lives throughout their
seminary years, and taking this
lesson to heart, they have
worked closely together, their

B.A. in Religion and Culture,
and later attended the
University of Calgary earning
a B.Sc. in environmental
biology. Mark's career has
included a number of
occupations through the years,
including work for Uniroyal.

and Canada Post.
The Wagschals have just
completed a self-directed
sabbatical and have now
settled in Ajax. They began
work at the Peace Lutheran
Church on Aug. 1, this year.

Investigators from the
Special Investigations Unit
(SIU) have commenced their
investigation into the
circumstances surrounding the
death of a 26 -year-old patient
at the Whitby Mental Health
Centre on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
Durham Regional Police
were summoned to the Whitby
Mental Health Centre
(WMHC) to restrain a patient.
The patient died 30 minutes
after being subdued with
pepper spray at the psychiatric
hospital.
The reason the police were
called in was because the
patient showed out -of -control
behavior, according to WMHC
officials.
"They (police) were called
to try to restrain and calm the
patient down," Margaret
Kuchmack, assistant
administrator of patient
services at the Whitby Mental
Health Centre, said.
"Occasionally when our
resources are insufficient to
handle a situation like this, we
have to call the police in here
for assistance, but very rarely
does this happen for us to have

This year's winner for the 0 -8 -year-old category is Ashley
Grncarovski of Ajax. She is the first Canadian to have won this
scholarship.
Ashley is a member of the Dynamics Baton Club in Ajax and
her coach is Karyn McKillen of Pickering.
Ashley received a large mock of the $1,000 U.S. savings bond
