I may be more than 15 years before disabled riders can enjoy the Ajax Transit two-step dance of joy, because of the exorbitant cost of replacing all the company s vehicles with low -floor busses. But Ajax Transit took the first step March 21 with the unveiling of their plan for fully integrated accessible transit services. The long-term hope, said Ward 4 councillor Jim McMaster, the Ajax council transit committee chairman, is for all residents to have access to regular town buses rather than relying on specialized, expensive services like Handi-Trans. "I am not saying that we will be able to get rid of the Hard -Transit system altogether," McMaster pointed out. "Hopefully, we will be able to reduce the demands on this irxxeasingly over -used system and shift a good many of these residents to our conventional transit system." For full accessibility on regular busses low -floor technology — the platform is raised and lowered via hydraulics — is required, something that is only now in the prototype stage. There is also the cost to be considered. Regular buses now cost about $125,000 (75 per cent funded by the province) and low -floor busses will run at least twice that. In the meantime, says Ajax Transit director Terry Barnett, new additions to the fleet win come with a host of features designed with the needs of the disabled in mind. They include a kneel -down feature (a 9 -inch step), color -coded stanchion bars for the visually impaired, priority seating for the disabled, special fighting under the seats and outside the bus and non- slip flooring, among others. By the end of this year half the company's fleet will be equipped with the features. The two revaest additions to Ajax's fleet of 25 — delivered Monday —contain the easier access features. 'ft's an intermediate step, but full accessibility can only be achieved by replacing the entire fleet with low -floor buses," Barnett said. Acquiring the low -floor buses when they become available is the uttimmate goal, but that could take 18 years, with each bus having a transport ministry -approved 18 -year lifespan With the company that snakes the new buss in financial difficulties, it could take even longer, he added. The education ministry is striving to standardize early childhood education but local school board officials believe the program is too costly to operate. As a compromise, the province is allowing the board to phase in the program over a three-year period. Two classes in each school area will begin next January with full implementation by September,1997. Greater Toronto Area (GTA) mayors slam province Greater Toronto Area (GTA) mayors are again asking that the province re -m= tical mega imp and re -visit the idea of shipping garbage to Kirkland Lake. At a recent GTA meeting the mayors recommended that Ontario review alternatives to handling waste, a respmse to the Interim Waste Authority's (IWA's) decision last year to locate future landfill sites in Pickering, Caledon and Vaughan. The mayors claim oosts associated with afsfing landfill sites, such as leachate deanW, have Cost taxpayers nearly $W million so far. "The IWA has failed to Xm de a safe lanA site within the GTA and this has cost us nearly $50 million. There are other effortim alternatives to landfill, such as incineration and long-distance hauling, and we recommend that the IWA review all of the mailable options," said Caledon Mayor Norm Calder. Region challenges Official Plan Durham Region and staff from the towns of Ajax and Pickering will probably be busy over the next year or so fighting off challenges to the region's Official Plan. Durham released a list of objections to the Official plan — a planning document that will guide the region for the next 30 years — last week. There are a total of 56 referrals and deferrals on the list, with some destined to go an the way to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). The total includes 20 deferrals to the region's Official Plan, which effectively puts the proposals on the government's backburner, something that region planning commissioner Dr. Mofeed Michael believes is a 'waste of time.' "It's like a black hole.,' he said, adding that the region needs to act within the next six months or nothing will be done. Three deferrals on the list deal with transportation links between Durham and Metro, Including Lawrence Avenue- Bayiy Street, Rossland Road - Finch Avenue and 5th Conoession-14th Awenue.
