Call it a tidal wave. Call it what you will, but Ontario Riding has a new MP after Dan McTeague rode a wave of herai sentiment sweeping the nation to victory in Monday's federal election. It's a time for celebration in the McTeague camp after their .avorite cruised to win by almost 11,000 votes. It's also a time of celebration for Liberal supporters across the country after Canadian voters turned the ballot boxes into a sea of red to elect a majority Liberal government, almost wiping out the ruling Progressive Conservatives in the process. Unbelievabie," said a humbled McTeague as he made his grand appearance at the Victorian Garden restaurant in Pickering Village after his victory was assured. His entrance — to the chorus of "We are the Champions" and the cheers of more than 200 wildly enthusiastic supporters — left him temporarily at a loss for words. "I can't describe the feeling, fve worked so hard to get here. Now that I m here, what do I do nowt McTeague, however, quickly recovered his voice and promised his supporters that he and his party will not let Canadians down in solving the economic woes of the country. "There is a union of Conservatives with Reform and Progressives with Liberals," he said, analyzing the election results pouring into his campaign office on election night. The crossover of Conservatives to his party would have giver. Reform the victory in Ontario Riding, if not for the personal popularity of PC incumbent Rene Soetens, he said. That popularity resulted in Soetens getting 16,000 votes. As it was, the Reform Party gathered 27,000 local votes while the winning Liberals got 38,000 votes. Reform and the PCs split the right wing vote, and so the Lberas came right up the middle to score a huge victory. But second place went dear;y to Sullivan, as it did to Reformers throughout the province, giving legs,:-acy 'o his claim that the tnie conservative option s now the Reform Party. It was a message echoed by Reform leader Preston Manning who spoke from Calgary on election night. "The political landscape of Canada has been significantly altered," Manning said around midnight as television analysts showed his party running neck - and -neck with the Bloc Quebecois for second place across Canada. He vowed Reior ::ers will stand up for fisc?! responsibility and a vision, of federalism based on grassroots democracy. Both positions are traditional conserva:ive stancs and were cheered lustily by Reformers who packed Annandale Golf and Country Club for Dor. Sull;van's post-election parry. Sullivan praised the 400 volunteers who had worked hard for his election bid and noted that most of them had little previous political experience. "It's a real victory for the grassroots when people who have never been involved in politics before get such a good result," noted campaign organizer Patricia Schmidt. It was clear on election night that most of the Reformers were new to this kind of work — election results at campaign headquarters lagged far behind television results; telephones were jammed; and scrutineers often ended up driving to the office to post their results. Contrast this will the smooth - running Tory machine — expenenced volunteers and poll captains, a computer hook-up that projected results as they carne in from the polling stations, and local municipal politicians dropping in to lend their support. Second place ain't bad. Sullivan made it locally; Reform made it across Ontario; and the debate will continue about who s second rationally. Council pitches in to recycle Ajax Council has swung its support behind a local residents grand plan for a multi-purpose recycling centre. ZBontoft took the next step in creating the centre — designed to accept all types of waste and discarded items, from coat hangers and sports equipment to =6 appliances and old books — with the approval of council To help her cause, Bontoft was accompanied at last week's council meeting by five Lincoln Alexander Public School students. Each made an impassioned speech to councillors asking for the town's backing. The municipal support is necessary for the success of the centre, Bontoft said, because funding requests to both :he federal and provincial governments must go through the local municipality. Bontoft is applying for a $167,000 grant from Environment Canada (over three years) and a one-year $65,000 grant from the provincial Ministry of Environment. She is also looking for financial support from the local business community. Bontoft said she hopes the recycling centre will be self- sufficient in three years, adding that she expects to handle 169 tonnes of material in the first year. The centre will expand the 311's concept (reduce, reuse, recycle) by adding repair and resale. THE NEXT DECADE. GUARANTEED.. "People have given us an opportunity, not a blank cheque, but an gpportunity to address these problems." McTeague's margin of victory, while impressive, was not as easy as it looked. He was in tough with Reform Party candidate Don Sullivan, who entered election day as a co -favorite with McTeague. Progressive Conservative incumbent Rene Soetens, who won by 11,878 votes Ln 1988, finished a distant third this time. McTeague praised both candidates. He noted that he had "some very tall shoes to fill" in replacing Soetens and thanked Sullivan for giving the liberals "a real run for our money." While McTeague said he expected a liberal victory, he admitted the margin of victory nationally was unexpected and a little bit surprising. "We had a good plan., a good agenda. McTeague, who becomes the first liberal member in Ontario Riding since 1979, gave credit to his "rag -tag army" campaign team for the victory, estimating his pollsters had knocked on 4 8, 000 doors since the election was announced. But his first and last thank -you went to Daniella Rossi, who will walk down the aisle at St. James Catholic Church in Oakville Saturday with the riding's newest MP. "She's kept me humble — you don't know Italian women," he joked when he arrived at the victory party. Rossi, for her part, was overwhelmed at the outpouring of support for her h,,.sband-to-be. "I'm just really ecstatic right now," she said. "It'll probabry .am a few hours — or a few days — for : to sink in." During an interview last week, Metro Works Commissioner Robert Ferguson said his department wants to alleviate concerns expressed by Pickering staff and elected representatives over the proposal. Metro's works department hopes to gain provincial approval to move 110,000 tonnes of material from the Metro -owned, 750 -acre Brock North landfill to Brock West. The total cost for the transfer is estimated at approximately $700,000. It will take six months to complete the work. Brock North landfill is located east of Brock Road and north of the 5th Concession in Pickering. Ferguson said he initially anticipated the waste transfer could begin in January, since moving the landfill material during winter months would minimize odors from excavation. During a meeting Oct. 20, Metro's waste committee agreed to postpone the request for two weeks in order to dialogue further with the Town of Pickering. Ferguson said Metro has no plans to use Brock North as a hire dump. 'It's really just to move the waste so that we can clean-up the site," he told The Bay News. 'We have no plans for the Brock North site. Brock North isn't a prospective landfill." Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs said he'll meet with town staff this week to create a formal list of concerns and expectations with regard to the Metro plan. He added that Pickering may request an additional deferral if more time is needed to develop a local strategy. Arthurs said he wants to learn whether the waste transfer 'will solve one problem by aggravating another." He also wants assurances that Brock North won't be used again as a landfill. 'That for me would be paramount in endorsing what's being proposed," the mayor told The Bay News. But it will be a tough sell to gain Pickering council approval of the Metro plan. Ward 3 Regional Councillor Kip Van Kempen is expected to introduce a motion on Nov. 1 asking the province's environment ministry to revoke a Certificate of Approval at Brock West. Town council is also pondering a move to seek a legal injunction against Metro and its operation of Brock West. Local politicians are expected to make a decision next month. The landfill material transfer is expected to save Metro approximately $100,000 a year—the cost of operating Brock North's leachate collection system, storage, and removal. In a Metro works committee report, Ferguson reasoned that 'the increasing on-going annual Catch the Leafs The luck of the draw could win you corporate box seating at a Toronto Maple Leafs hockey game next month, courtesy of Tribute Corporation and the Ajax - Pickering United Way. Brock North opened in 1978 and was used by Metro and Durham Region for approximately one year. The expense of operating two landfills in the region prompted a move to close the landfill. While the transfer of Brock North landfill won't fill the remaining capacity at Brock West, Ferguson said the move will shorten its lifespan by a couple of months. The Metro works commission estimates there is approximately two years of capacity at Brock West. 'It (the waste material) is settling significantly," Ferguson said. 'As it decomposes it settles. We're still within the contours." He predicted that Durham Region will look to extend the life of Brock West at least until the next regional landfill, selected by the Interim Waste Authority, is opened. Metro will look to sell the Brock North site after it's been cleaned -up, Ferguson said. 'if somebody came along with an offer we'd certainly entertain it." Leh in the aftermath was an energetic and fresh newly -elected MP, a sincere and dowrrto- earth hopeful who should feel excited about his future, and a disappointed, bitter political incumbent - Dan McTeague, like most of the other members of the federal Liberal party, made all of the right moves during a lengthy campaign. From the beginning of his bid to win the Ontario Riding seat, McTeague displayed a driven determination and optimistic outlook that were difficult to ignore. And so here's his payoff — a worthy victory that will hopefully bring about the kinds of positive promised changes in federal government. It's an opportunity McTeague and his party dare not squander lest they suffer the fate of Rene Soetens and the federal Progressive Conservatives. Reform Party representative Don Sullivan has to be feeling good about his election showing. He finished a strong second, well ahead of the riding's incumbent. Throughout the campaign, Sullivan displayed sincerity and +enormous (pardon the expression, Don) grit. He was frank and forthright when it came to discussing issues. Burt the truly s the address and telephone number Of the. sender, Computer network provides wide range of information By Genn Hendry With a computer and a modem, information on everything from public library hours to the current price of corn could be at the fingertips of Durham Region residents by next June. The system is called Freenet, and it's an information -sharing computer network that can link up users throughout the region. The leading edge of a new telecommunications medium, Freenet provides information on local and electronic mail, education, the community, health, technology, government, the arts, recreation, the law and much more. The system started in Cleveland, Ohio in 1984 and is now found in 11 American communities, New Zealand, as well as Ottawa and Victoria in Canada. The system is also ready to go on-line = by next spring or earlier — in Toronto, Edmonton, Elliot Lake, Ont. and Trail, B.C. By next summer, if a group of four local computer hobbyists have their way, the system will also be on-line in Durham Region. Steven Cavanaugh, a Whitby computer technician and a member of the Durham Free Network's steering committee, said the response has been phenomenal since plans for the system were announced. "I've had over a dozen calls and John Norman (another committee member) has received over 20 in just a few days. They're all asking 'how can I help,' 'where can I get more information,' Cavanaugh said recently. "So far, the support has just blown the doors off me." The system will be staffed entirely by volunteers and will only be a success with the help of the whole community, Cavanaugh said. In Ottawa, the network has already picked up 200 volunteers (and 8,500 users) in just six months. Most users will participate simply by using the system, but many others are needed to get the system into operation. Using the system is simple enough, Cavanaugh added. Anyone with access to a computer and a modem can tap into any of the participating organizations to find out details on municipal programs, service club meetings, school homework, or just general information sharing between users. Freenet will also be a boon to the elderly and the disabled, opening up the information world to those who can't get out of their homes. But the key, Cavanaugh explained, is that the system will be able to link everyone in the community, not just computer addicts or hobbyists. In Ottawa — where modem sales have jumped 800 per cent this year — no one is more than 10 minutes from Freenet computer access. The market is certainly there in Durham, Cavanaugh said, with more than 20 per cent of Durham households owning a personal computer. The information is free and easy enough for first-time users, he added. So far, the steering committee has received positive feedback from service clubs, various chambers of commerce and boards of educations, EDS Canada (the world-wide computer supplier for General Motors), Durham College and several municipalities, including the Town of Ajax. Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner briefly raised the matter during a council meeting Oct. 18. According to Brenner, the 900 -exchange telephone calls were made during a three-hour apparent break-in in the early morning hours of Dec. 21, 1992. They included calls to assorted telephone sex lines, credit counselling services and sports lottery pools. Charges for 900 -exchange numbers generally amount to $10 minimum per call. However, none of the calls was paid for by the town. Brenner said all were charged back to the telephone company. The 900 -exchange calls were discovered by the town's treasury department. 'here were no signs of a break-in, nor had the Brougham fire station been vandalized, according to Brenner. The issue raises concerns about security in rural fireballs, he said. "if the (irehall was secure, how did it happen?" Brenner told The Bay News. "How could something be broken into for three hours and nobody be aware of it? I'd like to see the police report (of the break-in). There are a lot of questions, in my mind." Brenner said he wants to make sure there's no misunderstanding about who made the telephone calls. He also wants to make sure proper safeguards are in place to prevent future break-ins at the Brougham station. The situation could have been disastrous, Brenner said. "What if the firefighting equipment had been damaged? If our firehalls are always vacant and not staffed, then they're primary targets (for vandalism)." Brenner said hell look at the police report and decide on a course of action. '7f there is no police report then that raises other questions." Ajax committee appointments are creating a political rift By Glenn Hendry A rift is developing between A, -ax councillors over the town's sys.ern of awarding committee appointments. A notice of motion .from Regional Councillor Susan Dulny :o rev;ew the system was hotly debated at the Oct. 18 council :meeting and was eventually deferred until April. Ward 3 Councillor Steve Parish wants immediate action on the issue, demanding the review be completed by Nov. 15. Parish said there are problems with the current system of appointing committee members, chairs and deputy mayors, noting that such appointments were not done 'by the book" "I think it's time we went back to the spirt and the letter of the procedure bylaw," he said. "If we don't choose on the basis of merit, that's called patronage." "Frankly, if we continue the way we are doing, the sovereignty and the authority of coundl is seriously eroded." Mayor Jim Witty objected to Parish's patronage allegation, saying he as mayor wasn't a "dictator." The current system tries to fit councillors on committees they've shown an interest in or where they would be best suited, Witty said. Approximateiy 300 people die each year in Ontario from influenza -related illnesses. The majority — 85 per cent — are over 65. In addition, the flu puts 25,000 people in hospital every year and costs millions of dollars. Prevention is the best medicine, and you can be vaccinated against the three main strains of flu germs expected to be around this winter. If you re in a "high -risk - group you flu shot is free. High-risk groups include people over 65 and those who have serious heart, lung or kidney diseases, diabetes or cancer, are irnfected with HN or have certain other serious conditions. Also considered at high risk are all residents of Ontario s nursing homes, homes for the aged and chronic care facilities. This year, the flu vaccine is also free to staff of nursing homes, homes for the aged and chronic care facilities who care for patients. The flu vaccine poses no risk to pregnant women or the fetus. However, anyone who has a severe allergy to eggs should not get a flu shot since the vaccine contains a trace of egg protein. fK OkiK TX<00N We've brought the Danforth to Whitby for more information call 668-0778 "Once a Week Go Greek!" one block North of 401, Brock St., Whitby OPTOMETRISTS Dr. E. But if you think that system is only ancient history, think again. And think Barter World, Inc. Barter World's nearly 200 exclusive members are currently trading more than 1.000 different products and services between each other on a monthly volume of approximately $80.000. That's $80,000 in new sales between a few hundred businesses every month; S80,000 in cash saved by these business people every month and $80,000 in new sales guaranteed not to reach the competitors of Barter World members. A Durham computer consuiting/ac counting business owner, in fact, is trading $16,000 of his services at retail prices to new clients to help reduce cash expenses of building an addition at his home.
