The Ajax resident is spearheading an effort to create a large-scale waste recycling centre designed to accept all types of waste and discarded items — ewrything from coat hangers and sports equipment .o srnall appliances and old books. Bontoft said the operation should be up and running in approximately six weeks. All R's Waste Reduction Centre will be a private effort that will rely on government funding for its initial start-up, and public and private assistance for its continuing operation. It's hoped that the centre A make a 9graficant impact on helping bwer the high cost of the m wx paD nm "bye boot" program and, of course, redudng the amount of garbage sent to the dump. The format will be a panel discussion followed by questions from the floor. Panel members will include Pickering Economic Development Co-ordinator Joan Alfrey, Sean Hogue, the chairman of Whitby Business Improvement Areas, and Stewart Craig of Ajax's business development department. "It's strictly an information session for the business community on how to go about `.orming a BIA if they were interested," Higdon said. "h certainly sounds like a good idea, but I don't know if Pickering can work together, any more or less, than any other community." BIA's, which can be established only at the request of a iocal business community and only by a municipal bylaw, are tools that help business people join together to bund a stronger business area. BIA efforts usually involve improvements to the physical environment and appearance of the business area as well as economic redevelopment programs such as promotion or advertising. Once created, every business within the geographical area of the BIA contributes to the organization's budget and is considered a member. Higdon, who is unsure of the response she will receive for the panel discussion, noted that approximately 900 of the 1,100 -some businesses in town are located in her southeast Pickering ward. PACT to crash NDP retreat Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs and members of Pickering Ajax Citizens Together for the environment (PACT) say the province's search for a new Durham Region dump is "so far off track it should be trashcanned." AI',hurs and PACT will be m Barrie this morning trying to force the province to back down in its effort to put the new landfill site in Pickering. The group will be picketing a New Democratic Party cabinet retreat. The environmental group wi!l distribute information stating the province has made mistakes in its site selection process. A press release from the Town of Pickering said the province is not following the Environmental Assessment Act and has committed a "blunder" by selecting four (of five) possible landfill sites in the same areas as three government development projects. The demonstration will be held at 9 a.m. at the Kempenfeit Conference Centre at Georgian Coliege, just south of Barrie. Recycling centre pioneer is well qualified e From Page 1 to be determined, Bontoft and the towns planning department are looking at a number of options. A central location near Highway 401 would be ideal. A suitable facility would be approximately 10,000 sq. ft., with a loading dock and ground level door, and an area for office and display space. But once in full swing, Bontoft predicted the centre will be a self-sufficient operation within three years. "The whole idea is ancient," she told The Bay News. "Back in the 'war years,' people didn't throw anything away. It's only because of convenience that we've gotten to that point now." A committee has already been struck to develop the project and get it off the ground. Bontoft herself has been named project manager — a task that she is eminently qualified for. Her portfolio includes work with the Durham Environmental Network (she's been a member from the beginning] and Ajax Citizens for the Environment. She is currently chair of both Ajax Environmental Affairs and Waste Reduction weeks. Bontoft has worked with Durham Region's works department and Maclean Hunter Cable in the creation of a waste reduction video. She has worked on a children's environmental show with Trillium Cable in Pickering. Both Environment Canada and the province's environment ministry have been approached for start-up and operational funding. Approximately $180,000 over three years is being sought from the federal agency while it's hoped the province will provide $67,000. Bontoft has calculated that Coupon *7 Operational costs will amount to approodmately x234,000 in the first year. Private business and members of the public also have a part to play. Since A will be a charitable organization, the centre will be looking for donations of supplies, equipment, money and time. The centre will sell the material it receives in order ro generate revenue. In addition to blue box -type items, users will be asked to drop off a wide range of recyclables and reusables including virtually all types of paper, scrap metals, plastics, elastics, bread tabs, corks, egg cartons, prescription bottles, twist ties, styrofoam packing chips, beer caps, filr-, canisters, and much, much more. While a team of volunteers will provide regular help with sorting, users will be asked to separate items into appropriate receptacles. There will be no charge for dropping off material. The first waste recycling location is targeted to serve Ajax and Pickering. "We will have to give that potation) a fair amount of time to prove it can worn" Bontoft said, explaining that a logical second recycling centre would likely be situated in an area east °O value WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT :so D®IICTSLE + $25 CPM 9llClc IN&WP WWKONLyBASE$ON /AWRANCER"S LEAVE NiN KIAU TO US r I Nt aarnUgr he con`0' Slfurdy i EyrnlrplpgMmr+tsA►WOii CALL FOR AN APPOINTMENT FREE PICK-UP 3 DELIVERY_ 888 BROC( RD. The idea for the Ajax recycling centre is patterned on a similar operation called Wastewise in Georgetown, Ontario. Gay Liddell's The Turning Point opens for business Sept. 11 on the main floor of the Pickering Recreation Complex offering pottery instruction programs as well as pottery items for sale. Pickering Parks and Recreation Director Tom Quinn said the municipally -run pottery program lost approximately $5,000 last year. He added that it was on the social contract chopping block before the idea came to turn it over to private hands. Quinn also expects to generate another $5,000 in rent, bringing the total savings to ratepayers to $10,000. "This was one of thousands of programs we run. Some make money and some don't and you try to balance them off," he said. "This was a very, very expensive program and because THE DURHAM REGION DISTRICT HEALTH COUNCIL IS NOW REQUESTING APPLICATIONS for MEMBERSHIP on the 'DURHAM REGION LONG TERM CARE PLANNING COMMITTEE A Long Term Care Planning Committee is currently being formed. Liddell, who has operated pottery programs for the past 17 years both with the town and at her residence, was the obvious choice to take over, Quinn said. "It's a marriage of private business and government — our building and her talent," he added. For her part, Liddell, like the proverbial blushing bride, is excited by the opportunity calling the deal "an incredible agreement." "For a small business, to take over a municipal program facility and still run programs for the community, it really is a new venture," she said. "We've had some wonderful co-operation with the town and I'm really optimistic this will work." Robert McMenemy, 37, a financial systems consultant, earned the right to represent his party into next month's federal election after winning the local nomination Aug. 31. The National Party, established by Hurtig and headquartered in Winnipeg, has only been in existence since November, 1992. "rve always been interested in politics but I had never done anything about it. None of the other parties did anything for me," McMenemy said. "I heard Mel speaking on the radio once and then read his book. I decided, 'yeah, that's what I was looking for. - The book, caned The Betrayal of Canada: Hope of a New and Better Canada, has become a poky dominent for the National Party. The party touts a "Canada Fhr set of policies, McMenemy said — a policy that calls for changes to the Canadian parliamentary system to make it more responsible to the needs of Canadians. His party is against the Free Trade Agreement and for democratic reform (the current system gives poor value for the dollar, he explained, more free votes in the House of Commons, and a reformed taxation system. McMenemy said the party also supports the current open- door immigration policy, noting that "we are a nation of immigrants." What makes the party politically unique is its refusal to accept contributions from corporations, unions, or special interest groups, McMenemy said. "This gives us the political will to do what we need to do," he said. "We serve no other taskmaster." "The National Party is, 1 think, a radically different party. It's not a protest, its not a one - issue party," the candidate added It's the only party out there with the political will to make the changes Canadians recognize as being necessary." Married, with two children, McMenemy is confident his party will do %wU in the election, particularly in Western Canada where he predicted the National Party win win several seats. In Ontario Riding, McMenemy recognizes he will have his work cut out to out- distance incumbent Progressive Conservative MP Rene Soetens, Liberal candidate Dan McTeague, Reform candidate Don Sullivan, or New Democratic Party hopeful Lynn Jackan. 'It's a big riding and I'm running a small campaign," he said. "But it will be a minority government and we'll be back at the polls in two or three years. By that time, the National Party will be a political force." The party will be fielding approximately 150 candidates in the upcoming election. ------------------------------ DID DID YOU KNOW THAT SOME KIDS WON'T BE 1 ABLE TO PLAY HOCKEY BECAUSE THE EQUIPMENT IS TOO EXPENSIVE! 1 1 I We desparately need small sizes of used Hockey 1 Equipment to be made available at Low Prices. y WILL YOU HELP??? 1 WE PAY CASH FOR ALL USED SPORT EQUIPMENT THAT I WE BUY & SELL AT LOW PRICES. Right now Gatens said there are a number of subcommittees at work trying to iron out the problems on individual issues. Income sea ity is a key issue for the Ajax workers, Gatens said, especially since the plant has seen its work force shrink from approximately 1,600 to its current 600 m just one year. Dinosaur, The Greatest Shaw Unearthed has arrived. Dinosaur culture has long occupied an Important place in North America. For most of us, prd stodc fauna means Dino jumping on Fred or Godzilla filling up on Tokyo. Now were faced with mega -star Barney, the chronically peppy purple dinosaur, and Jurassic Park is the stanmer's uncontested blocltbuster. And retailers are casting in. McDonald's Restaurants, which never fail to exploit a good thing, offers "dino-meals" with neat take-home cups, and every retailer has been invaded by a plethora of prehistoric dolls, t - shirts, greeting cards, books, bags, hats and ketch -boxes. The beauty of the whole thing is that T -Rex isn't around to demand Dinosaur, the largest travelling science exhibit In the world now on display at Ontario Place, takes advantage of this dnaned a#m. Visitors are greeted with an up -close look at the terrible lizards as portrayed by pop atture. Toys, cartoons and bad sci-fi movies. entertain you while you wait to enter. But the exhibit is about reality. ft's the culmination of the five-year Dinosaur Project which sent Chinese and Canadian paleontologists to the Gobi Desert, Carnada's high arctic, and the Alberta badlands. The show boasts the remains of 30 dinosaurs, including 11 that were previously unknown. The team endured sweltering heat and sandstorms to send back 15 tons of fossils from the Gobi alone. The display cost $20 million to stage and is housed in a 31,000 square foot tent, installed at Ontario Place aaoss from the aging warship HMCS Haida. Canadian content is evident from the introduced. Visitors are shown a video in which Fraser, a would-be paleontologist, and Gobi, an animated dinosaur, preview what's ahead. And it is impressive. A re creation of the Gobi dig site leads into the main hall, which features skeletons and models in life -like poses. Among the displays, a mother duckbill dinosaur attempts to shield her young from marauding predators, 12 baby Pinachosaurus are huddled together after they smothered in a sandstorm 75 million years ago, and above all, towers the Mamenchisaurus, the largest dinosaur ever found. Videos, demonstrations and hands-on activities add information. A similar explosion in 1988 critically injured an employee and destroyed the weigh station. Cummins also claims there Is considerable leachate leakage from the site, particularly in the south, a mainly residential area. The report recommends the immediate closing of Brock West, "to minimize environmental damage." The author further claims that toxic chemicals such as cyanide, arsenic, cadmium, nickel and benzene are leaking from the site at outputs far exceeding Ump recommended health levels. The report also states that leachate is poisoning Muffins Creek and creating a health threat to humans and animals. leachate breakouts should be posted with skull and crossbones and the entrance to the polluted area should be posted with warnings," Cummins said in his report. Local businessman Joe Dickson, a former region councillor, was among the small group of individuals who turned a good idea into an even greater reality back in 1983. He recalled the birth of the community event. "The intent was to bring closer ties between the residents of Ajax and A)ax businessmen," he said during an interview. "We hoped it would become an annual event and a truly farriiy weekend — something for every member of the fam0y-" Dickson. served as the festival's chairr:a7 dur ng three fledgling years. He was replaced by former parks and recreation director Gord Bradley and Walter Chiliman of MDK Electric. The festival ran for seven straight years, but had to be cancelled in 1990 as the Ajax Community Centre was being revamped. However, in 1993, the 10th Annual Festival and Trade Show is "better than ever" — and Dickson returns as chairman. Organizers hope to continue the great work and fun -filled events of the past. During its history, the Ajax Family Festival and Trade Show, supported by a host of Ajax businesses, raised approximately $80.000 for community projects — inch(ding the local general hospital. Most of this years ful slate of events are free, thanks to the support of business. Runnymede Corporation is playing a major sponsorship role. While response to this year's festival has been extremely successful, Dickson recalled the event's initial year was difficult. "It was difficult to sell all of the booths the first year," he said. "But we did sell out the second year. The response was really good." "If the event is half as successful as we anticipate, it will be due to the members of the executive." Dickson said. If someone makes a point of recommending the products and service of a business then it's worth your while to heed that advice. During the past five years, a lot of people have talked about the quality of heating and cooling services and 40 i products at Durham Environmental Systems. This company's success has been built on repeat and referral clients. And the word has spread quickly. "We don't advertise a whole lot and the bulk of work just seems to be coming through referrals," said owner Doug Adolph, who along with partner Glenn Trider, boast more than 25 years of experience. Blaisdale Montessori Durham Environmental Systems are heating and cooling specialists, providing such products as gas and oil furnaces, and ground source and air source heat pumps. In addition, with four sheet metal tradesmen and refrigeration technicians and electricians on staff, the company provides quality installation. "We can fabricate just about anything we ever dreamed of making up now," Adolph said. That's an important consideration since custom jobs represent a sizable portion of the work they do. Rural customers also represent a significant segment of clients, and ground source heat pumps are among the best %eating and cooling systems available to them. Ground source heat pumps are used mostly in rural areas ,where electricity is the exclusive choice. It's a heating and cooling alternative that is as inexpensive as natural gas and a lot more efficient because two- thirds of the energy comes from the ground — free of charge. A high -efficiency natural gas system operates at 93 per cent efficiency. By comparison a new oil furnace operates at 83 per cent efficiency whsle electric baseboard heaters provide 100 per cent efficiency. Ground source heat pumps, a systern that uses refrigerant gas and a forced -air network, provides up to 400 per cent efficiency. In addition, these systems can be installed in virtually any size home. "We've installed it in places as small as 700 sq. ft. and as large as 8,000 sq. ft.," Adolph said. "Heating bills, in some cases, have been reduced from $5,000 to $1,500 a year." In fact, ground source heat pumps are used and often seriously considered, during the construction of many new homes, Adolph said. Ontario Hydro calls ft the most energy- efficient nergy efficient heat source available. Over the years, as business has steadily expanded throughout the region, Adolph and Trider have made a point of maintaining the same approach to customer service. "We'll try to set their minds at ease and do a job as if it were in our own home," Adolph said. "We work cleanly and do the job properly. A lot of customers appreciate it when you take their best interest at heart." Dr. Richard Hadden, a 17 - year Durham resident who has held senior management positions in the Canadian steel industry, was recently named to the top post of the Bureau of Excellence for Durham Region (BEDR). An initiative of local business, BEDR assists organizations helping them to increase productivity and attain a more competitive position in the marketplace through training and education. Small and medium-sized companies are the primary focus. Hadden said total quality techniques are not complicated and could mean huge savings for local business through the elimination of repetition and wasteful practices. "I think most companies could benefit from total quality," he said. "The cost of not doing things right the first time could be as much as 20 to 40 per cent." Stop sign The Town of Ajax will install a three-way stop sign at Wright Crescent and Reed Drive, despite staff concerns that the location will be dangerous as well as leave the town open to potential lawsuits. Area residents had petitioned council to install the stop sign because of concerns for safety. Staff, however, declared the location of the stop sign as dangerous because of sightline restrictions on Wright Crescent, low traffic volumes and no accident history. The sign will be placed at one end of a "reverse curve" and engineering and public works director Frank Hull, in his report to staff, "strongly" recommended against the sign's installation, calling it an "unwarranted stop sign in a hazardous location.” THE PLANNING ACTIP TOWNSHIP OF PICKERING Take notice that an application to amend the Zoning Order filed as Ontario Regulation 102/72, has been received by the Minister of Municipal Affairs. The li3a}r News, Septetatber 8, 1"3,29 Good old" rugby is Ontario's fastest-growing sport ByG6=&ndry It may not be the hottest ort in this country yet, but the and old game of rugby is rtainly catching fire. Recognition from locals has en slow coming as Canadians, to favor the gentle games of ckey and lacrosse as national orts, never did cotton on to lb" game often referred to gentlemen's sport played by It may be a different story today, however, as rugby is probably the fastest growing sport in the country, especially here in Ontario. The Ontario Rugby Union (ORU), the governing body of the sport in the province, has seen its club membership—which includes rhe local Ajax Wanderers—increase from 45 to 54 d,aing the last 10 years. The number of boys teams has riser. from 80 to 105. But the real growth has come in the school system and in girls and women's rugoy. In 1983, there were 180 schools in Ontario playing boys rugby. Today there are over 300. Girls rugby? At least 100 Ontario schools offer the sport today while a decade ago the sport simply did not exist for girls. Girls and women's dub rugby wasn't an option 10 years ago, either. This season there are 19 teams, including representation from the Wanderers. There are a cumber of favors that explain the popularity explosion of the game, said ORU managing director Roger McEwan. The number one reason is economics. 'It's a very inexpensive sport to play,' he told The Bay News. 'At the school level, many schools can't afford football anymore. For the cost of outfitting one football team we can outfit one -and -a -half rugby teams." The perception of rugby has also changed, McEwan said. 'A few years ago, you talked to people about rugby and they would say it was a dangerous, 'animal house -type' of sport. Today there is better understanding of the game. We're attracting really good athletes who made the choice to play rugby instead of higher profile sports." "Many players who come through the system are also good football or hockey players," he added. "A lot of them, when they go to university, are playing rugby now instead of football." But there are still many good rugby players who are slipping away to other, better known, sports, said Karl Svoboda, a 'hooker" with the Wanderers and the captain of Canada's national team. It's still diffia;it, Words -of- Wisdom - Joe Dickson M A little experience can wreck a lot of theory. A young salesmen was dis- appointed over losing an important sale. Discussing the matter with the sales manager, he shrugged, "1 guess it just proves you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink." "Son," said tate sales manag- er, "let me give you a pieta of advice: Your job is not to make him drink. k's to make him thirsty." Ajax he explained, to convince athletes to stay in the amateur game of rugby when there are opportunities to make a living - and sometimes big money - in the big four sports of baseball, hockey, football and basketball. "Rugby is not a major sport so sometimes we lose them after high school. We've got to keep them hooked; keep them playing; and develop them into senior players," said Svoboda, a 31 -year-old eight-year veteran of Team Canada with 18 "caps" ,full international games) under his belt. "We're still losing a lot of good kids to other spats." But he acknowledges the job of getting young players into the 1W sport and keeping them there is a battle that rugby is slowly but surely winning. And Svoboda himself can take a measure of the credit, because the growth of the game has been helped by the recent success at the national level. For years, the national team was considered an also-ran side; not to be taken seriously by the so-cailed powers in the game. But all that changed in the 1991 World Cup when the Canadians reached the quarter -finals --the final eight of the global tournament. Another blow for Canadian rugby was struck iast May when the national team played "giant -killer" and knocked off mighty England for N AV The viclorid n nardc8 1WQjn•Wedding ell 6F -Business Receptions Ytnt ' ` 'Luncheons • Private • Corporate Parties 619- 9858 Afeetings FALL FAMILYBRUNCH Sunday, September 12th, 11 am - 3 pm Featuring old tune favorites such as Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, lauagna, Roast Beef, Cbicken Wings, Toasted Honey Crumpets, 6 a Selection of Salads & Desserts. $1 !.95 Adalts 112 Price Children Under 11 Children 4 and under eat FREE: 10% Discount for Seniors, AFTERNOON TEA Sunday, September 26th, 2 pm - 5:30 pm Traditional High Tea Featuring ...
