The loss of industrial lands and the financial burden the project would have on the town were cited as two reasons for keeping the existing roadway designation. I m: 13. PfckcnttE Ontano UW3E6 Corruption probe cause for concern It behooves us to say something about the recently launched police investigation of elected and non- elected Pickering public servants. It's a dark and uncertain cloud of doubt that hangs over a community. Although specifics are scarce, what's publically known is that at least two Pickering citizens made complaints of municipal corruption to a joint police task force called Project 80. Descriptives like "political Irregularities" and "real estate corruption" are linked to some form of alleged wrongdoing. It's also known that past and present elected and non -elected Pickering public officials are under scrutiny. There's also the mysterious and intriguing tape recorded conversation between a Pickering "politician" and a "developer" and a suggestion by the politician to the developer to "join the club." As far as facts are concerned that's virtually all that is publically known for sure. However, some of the allegations and rumors being repeated quite openly throughout town are absolutely astonishing — and libelous. And unfortunately, until Project 80 completes its investigation, the fantastic stories will continue and virtually every Pickering politician and town staff member will probably be painted with the same brush. There's reason to be concerned that Project 80 may uncover the worst. Since being launched in October 1990, this special police task force has laid 165 charges including a breach -of -trust charge against Newmarket Mayor Raymond Twinney. It's important to remember that, at least for the tune being, past and present Pickering elected officials and town staff deserve the benefit of doubt. All the talk and innuendo circulating like wildfire throughout the community is just that. The truth may not be known for a long time. It behooves all of us to be patient and keep an open mind. Community and police work well together Dear editor: The following is a letter sent to Durham Region Police Chief Trevor McCagherty. Dear Chief McCagherty: This is a note of thanks on behalf of the residents of Somergrove Crescent in north Pickering. We would like to thank Cadet John Kenerknecht, Sergeant Arscott and all other officers of the Pickering detachment for their work in our neighborhood recently. We received notification of a "Scarborough -style" advertised party from some of the neighboring high schod students. This party was marketed, with flyers, to all Pickering and Ajax high schools, as well as a number of Scarborough high schools. This is the same type of party that has plagued Scarborough. When parties are marketed Woe this, they usually develop into problems. The party hosts are renting an our street. This is not the problem, but it may be part of the reason why they lack appreciation for the rights of other residents. At their last party, numerous residents complained about everything from broken glace to two gun shots. The Pickering detachment did what it could, but they were coming in to defuse a situation. This time they had and they performed an exemplary service. Due to the strong police presence this party did not result in any major incidents. This is a good example of how we can improve the cortimunity by the residents working with the police. Thank you. Mark Carr Pickering librarian during an — Letters ME> -presentation doesn't add up Dear editor: 1 is interesting how regional and municipal politicians Ww to sit on three sides of the fence on some issues. On May 17, Ajax cour dl revisited the issue of reducing the number of wads in Ajax from five to four in response to suggestions made at coundl that they would disenfrancfuse People by reducing the number of wards. The press reported Mayor Witty as saying: "Our neighbors, Pickering and Whitby, have three local couxhcillors and three regional counobors. We will have four local and two regional councillors." What Mayor Witty forgot to do was to kook elsewhere in the region. Using 1991 cetsus figures, three towrnsfups (Brock - population 11,057; Swgog - population 17,836; Uxbridge - population 14,092] each have one mayor, one regional councillor and five local muhalors. Interestingly enough, the City of Oshawa with a population of 129,344 has 10 wards and counal consists of one mayor, 10 regional WIXAM (one per ward) and five local councillors, each representing two wands (see the blue pages in the Bel telephone directory]. On the basis of 'rep by pop" Oshawa is overrepresented on regional muni. fast year 1 raised this matter with the then Minister of Municipal Affairs, the Horoucaile David Cooke, Mg" dw go one additional wuncilor maid dw and Whitby Earlier this year the Ajax executive and development committee recommended to council and it approved a motion 'that the Town of Ajax request the Ministry of Municipal Affairs to review the composition of Durham Council." Oshawa passed a 3 -part motion, rejecting the suggestion, yet the third paragraph read "that city council retain its historic position of supporting the principle of repress talion by popes► Recently the Oshawa 5mcutive Committee rejected a plan that would reduce the number of regional councillors from 10 to five in an effort to save $100,000 per year. According to Oshawa Regional Councillor Brian Nicholson, the system works fine the May it is. "Witt two councilors to a ward, t means one of them would always be able to deal with an issue without being in a conflict of interest.' He ated a recett case where council was dsassitg the expansion of Oshawa General Hospital. Mayor Nancy Diamond, who im in the area, and wad councilor Mike Armstrong had to declare conflicts because they own property that abuts the hospital. But the residents sl had representation at council because the ward's other mundlor, Ted Marks, was able to vote. With this type of logic, Ajax needs a lot more wards and lots more wundUors. The Town of Ajax, following the lead of neighboring Pickering, will try to ground personal watercraft, popularly known as jet skis, at the July 19 coundl meeting. A public hearing will be held on that date with council determined to impose a 10 kph speed limit for motorized watercraft on Duffin Creek and Carruthers Creek, effectively banning jet ski use. The Town of Pickering approved a similar bylaw for jet skis on Frenchman's Bay June 7. If the Ajax motion is approved, the town will ask the federal government to amend the Boating Restrictions Regulations, likely taking effect during the 1994 boating season. Engineering staff received a written complaint and petition from area residents complaining of high speeds and heavy traffic at the intersection. The letter, written by Pembry Crescent resident David Tabone, added that there were three accidents in recent months, including a collision that caused the death of a dog. In response to Tabone's letter, staff conducted a speed study on June 25 but'$ found no evidence of consistent speeding by j vehicles, nor the volume of traffic recommended by the province for the installation of a stop sign. However, council ignored the staff recommendation and asked that the stop sign be installed. The decision prompted Ward 4 Councillor Jim McMaster to ask that the town prepare its own guidelines for stop sign installations. LET US FILL YOUR NEW 01. We have already applied for the foundation permits, and barring any unforeseen circum- stances we should seethe first homes occupied in a year,' says Jim Ritchie, Triders vice-presi- dent of sales and marketing. The low-rise casitas — Tridel's unique style of housing that combines the best of low- rise townhouse living with the advantages of high-rise condo- minium security — have proved popular with buyers. The casita concept was introduced by Tridel about a year ago at the Casitas of Plaza del Sol at Steeles and Bathurst. The 124 casitas sold out in a month. The Pickering project is just as popular. The Ontario Municipal Board H•0•M•E F•R•0•N•T, wt7>Ft DENIS GRAYHURST' Denis Grayn=1 is a media consuhant to the home bvildeV indusby has now approved Tridel's request for a minor variance to the zoning bylaws, giving the go- ahead to the Pickering project. Now it's full steam ahead. The casitas come in a variety of sizes and shapes — bungalow and three-storey styles. All have two bedrooms and some have a den and/or patio and balcony. Sizes range from approxi- mately 1,160 sq. ft. for a bunga- low to 1,902 sq. ft. for a three- storey with two bedrooms, den and patio. Prices of the casitas — from $139,900 to $169,900 — make them even more popular. Five appliances are included. The casitas are in an attractive tour -storey building with a variety of roof lines and facades, creating a pleasant streetscape. There are no street -level garages. All parking for casita owners is in an underground garage. Entry to the casitas from the garage is via an elevator to a corridor that runs along the back of the homes. Maintenance fees are extraordinarly low. One factor is that each casita is individually metered for energy control and comfort. This means you aren't paying for those who waste energy. Each home comes with air conditioning and a high -efficiency gas heating system. The project will be access controlled with a 24-hour staffed gatehouse and security cameras in the parking garage — all the security features that are part of light Tridel's standard of excellence. To visit the project, exit Highway 401 at Whites Rd., go north to Highway 2, and then east a few kilometres just past the Pickering Town Centre. To ensure good service, it's best to call 420-1890 for an appointment. The insurance company is fronting a national promotion called By Mutual Consent — Breaking Barriers to Organ Donation, in the hope that more organs are found for the 2,500 Canadians now waiting for transplants. Ingrahm Lal, an agent with The Mutual Group in Oshawa, led a delegation to Ajax council July 5 asking that councillors spread the word about organ donation. Lai said an increasing nurnber of Canadians do sign, the organ donation consent forms but many don't tell their families. Evert if the consent fora; is signed, doctors cannot retrieve organs over the objections o Ia Lal explained. 'We have to tell our "arn;1fes, we want our organs donated when we die,"' Lal said. By the end of 1991, 14,425 organ transplants had been performed in Canada but only 40 per cent of those in reed receive donated organs. The overall survival rate after one year is 90 per cent. Cal Murphy, the coach/general manager of the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers and political columnist Dalton Camp are two of Canada's most notable personalities who have received organ transplants. Victor Davis, a gold ;pedal swimmer for Canada in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, is probably the most celebrated donor.
