town's July 1 annual celebrat;.on. One man suffered an eye injury while a woman
was treated for bu-ns to her leg.

"1 am concerned. I am very concerned that this happened," he told The Bay

"We're still pulling everything together and gathering information about what
happened. I won't have all of that information until the end of the week."
Quinn said the mishap is the first such incident that has occurred in the 22 years
that the event has been held. Ampleman, the company that put on the fireworks

M.M. Dillon, supported by

with two recommendations for
Ajax roads in the Durham

The study does not
recommend extending Emperor

environmental reasons. The
study does recommend Audley
be left as a Type C road
(designed for 'less traffic volume),
instead of a regional proposal to
upgrade it to a Class B arterial
or as an overpass at Highway
401. The loss of industrial lands
and the financial burden the
project would have on the town
were cited as two reasons for
keeping the existing roadway

Corruption probe
cause for concern
It behooves us to say something
about the recently launched police
investigation of elected and non-
elected Pickering public servants.
It's a dark and uncertain cloud of
doubt that hangs over a community.
Although specifics are scarce,
what's publically known is that at
least two Pickering citizens made
complaints of municipal corruption
to a joint police task force called
Project 80.
Descriptives like "political
Irregularities" and "real estate
corruption" are linked to some form
of alleged wrongdoing. It's also
known that past and present elected
and non -elected Pickering public
officials are under scrutiny.
There's also the mysterious and
intriguing tape recorded
conversation between a Pickering
"politician" and a "developer" and
a suggestion by the politician to the
developer to "join the club."
As far as facts are concerned
that's virtually all that is publically
known for sure. However, some of
the allegations and rumors being
repeated quite openly throughout
town are absolutely astonishing —
and libelous.
And unfortunately, until Project
80 completes its investigation, the
fantastic stories will continue and
virtually every Pickering politician
and town staff member will
probably be painted with the same
brush.
There's reason to be concerned
that Project 80 may uncover the
worst. Since being launched in
October 1990, this special police
task force has laid 165 charges
including a breach -of -trust charge
against Newmarket Mayor Raymond
Twinney.
It's important to remember that,
at least for the tune being, past and
present Pickering elected officials
and town staff deserve the benefit
of doubt. All the talk and innuendo
circulating like wildfire throughout
the community is just that.
The truth may not be known for a
long time. It behooves all of us to
be patient and keep an open mind.
CRAFTY.

Community and police
work well together
Dear editor:
The following is a letter sent to Durham Region
Police Chief Trevor McCagherty.
Dear Chief McCagherty:
This is a note of thanks on behalf of the residents
of Somergrove Crescent in north Pickering. We
would like to thank Cadet John Kenerknecht,
Sergeant Arscott and all other officers of the
Pickering detachment for their work in our
neighborhood recently.
We received notification of a "Scarborough -style"
advertised party from some of the neighboring high
schod students. This party was marketed, with flyers,
to all Pickering and Ajax high schools, as well as a
number of Scarborough high schools. This is the
same type of party that has plagued Scarborough.
When parties are marketed Woe this, they usually
develop into problems.
The party hosts are renting an our street. This is
not the problem, but it may be part of the reason why
they lack appreciation for the rights of other residents.
At their last party, numerous residents complained
about everything from broken glace to two gun shots.
The Pickering detachment did what it could, but
they were coming in to defuse a situation. This time
they had and they performed an exemplary
service. Due to the strong police presence this party
did not result in any major incidents.
This is a good example of how we can improve the
cortimunity by the residents working with the police.
Thank you.

Dear editor:
1 is interesting how regional and municipal politicians
Ww to sit on three sides of the fence on some issues.
On May 17, Ajax cour dl revisited the issue of reducing
the number of wads in Ajax from five to four in response to
suggestions made at coundl that they would disenfrancfuse
People by reducing the number of wards.
The press reported Mayor Witty as saying: "Our
neighbors, Pickering and Whitby, have three local
couxhcillors and three regional counobors. We will have four
local and two regional councillors."
What Mayor Witty forgot to do was to kook elsewhere in
the region. Using 1991 cetsus figures, three towrnsfups
(Brock - population 11,057; Swgog - population 17,836;
Uxbridge - population 14,092] each have one mayor, one
regional councillor and five local muhalors.
Interestingly enough, the City of Oshawa with a
population of 129,344 has 10 wards and counal consists of
one mayor, 10 regional WIXAM (one per ward) and five
local councillors, each representing two wands (see the blue
pages in the Bel telephone directory].

Earlier this year the Ajax executive and development

Oshawa passed a 3 -part motion, rejecting the
suggestion, yet the third paragraph read "that city council

repress talion by popes►
Recently the Oshawa 5mcutive Committee rejected a
plan that would reduce the number of regional councillors
from 10 to five in an effort to save $100,000 per year.
According to Oshawa Regional Councillor Brian
Nicholson, the system works fine the May it is. "Witt two
councilors to a ward, t means one of them would always be
able to deal with an issue without being in a conflict of
interest.'
He ated a recett case where council was dsassitg the
expansion of Oshawa General Hospital. Mayor Nancy
Diamond, who im in the area, and wad councilor Mike
Armstrong had to declare conflicts because they own
property that abuts the hospital. But the residents sl had
representation at council because the ward's other
mundlor, Ted Marks, was able to vote.
With this type of logic, Ajax needs a lot more wards and
lots more wundUors.

approved a similar bylaw for jet
skis on Frenchman's Bay June
7.
If the Ajax motion is
approved, the town will ask the
federal government to amend
the Boating Restrictions
Regulations, likely taking effect
during the 1994 boating season.
Excessive noise and dangers
to the environment of Duffin
Creek were cited as reasons for
a possible jet ski ban.

Kids say the
By Glenn tkndry
To quote Art Linkletter, "Kids
say the darndest things."
One person who would know
better than most what comes
out of the mouths of babes is
Elaine Litherland, a 33 -year
teaching veteran who retired in
June.
Litherland has spent the past
quarter-century at Pickering's
Elizabeth B. Phin Public School
(fornner,y Rouge Hia P.S.)
hiring *! a-, time she's heard it
a;: from:.er charges and its the
chi'd's n anc of wisdom she'll
darndest thins to 33 -year teaching vet
miss most.
"I'm going to miss teaching
and rm especially going to miss
the kids," she told The Bov
,News. "Over that many years
there have been so many
wonderful things, so many funny
things, that have happened
while teaching children."
"It's hard to pick some out —
but it all adds up to wonderful
memories."
The day she was being
interviewed, in fact, she was
to ling `:er students about
endangerec e;ep^ants 5'-e
asked the youngstP.rs why these
animals were being killed.
"Because of the soap," one
child replied.
"The soap...?" asked
Litheriand.
"You know," the student
responded. "Ivory soap."
Of course, it hasn't been all
fun and games for the 61 -year-
old Litherland. Teaching can be
a serious business. She laments

the years has been to
concentrate on personal
encouragement, and combine it
with "a iot of love and hugs."
Litherland has taught mostly
primary school and ended her
career teaching Grade 3. She
also teaches music — Litheriand
is an accomplished piano, organ
and accordion player — to
Grades 5 and 6_
The mother of three and
grandmother of six came to the
school, on a pregnancy leave —
I came for six months and I've
been here ever since" — and
now she's preparing to leave.
"There are many reasons that
would make me decide to retire
— your emotions go up and
down," Litherland said. "I
thought I wanted to retire and
then I wasn't s.:re. But I've
developed a slight hearing loss
— its hard to hear in a crowded
classroom — and I thought, 'it's
time to 4o."'
Litherland admitted she will
still miss the children and their
pearls of wisdom.
Like the time a student asked
her to spell "psychopath." She
told the child the correct
spelling, thinking, "Oh, my
God, why does he want to know
that word?"
But the student said her
spelling wasn't right.
"It starts with a 'c,"' said the
youngster.
"Yesterday mom and dad took
me to Cycle Path to buy a new
bike," he scribbled in a
notebook.
Litherland smiles as she
relates the memory. 'yam,; can't
beat that."

important differences the consumer should be aware of:
* Wallpaper Country's in stock wallcovering collection is
ALWAYS unique, OFTEN daring and INSPIRINGLY
coordinated.
*Wallpaper Country's EVERYDAY in stock prices are
ALWAYS at approximately HALF the comparable book
price or lesel
* During sale periods. Wallpaper Country's discounts are
deducted from the EVERDAY warehouse prices, NOT from
the comparable book prices. This is a tremendously vital
distinction. In stock prices are for DOUBLE rolls.

OPENING SOON IN BARRIE AT GEORGIAN MALL
Stop sign approved
Ajax council will install an all -way stop sign
at Pembry Drive and Patterson Drive, despite
a town staff report that said the stop 7gn was
not warranted.
Engineering staff received a written
complaint and petition from area residents
complaining of high speeds and heavy traffic
at the intersection. The letter, written by
Pembry Crescent resident David Tabone,
added that there were three accidents in
recent months, including a collision that
caused the death of a dog.
In response to Tabone's letter, staff
conducted a speed study on June 25 but'$
found no evidence of consistent speeding by j
vehicles, nor the volume of traffic
recommended by the province for the
installation of a stop sign.
However, council ignored the staff
recommendation and asked that the stop sign
be installed.
The decision prompted Ward 4 Councillor
Jim McMaster to ask that the town prepare its
own guidelines for stop sign installations.

The Kenyan project started in
Fredericton, N.B. in 1990. But
when the local diocese couldn't
find a priest to relocate to Africa
this year, the call went out to St.
Paul's and the McVittys. The
Fredericton church, the Toronto
diocese, and the St. Paul's
congregation will all pitch in to
raise the $22,000 needed to
keep the McVittys in Kenya for
a year.
The fundraising goal locally is
$7.000 and the parish is about
half -way there.

Construction will start immedi-
ately on Tridel's exciting Casitas
at Discovery Place in Pickering.
We have already applied for
the foundation permits, and
barring any unforeseen circum-
stances we should seethe first
homes occupied in a year,' says
Jim Ritchie, Triders vice-presi-
dent of sales and marketing.
The low-rise casitas —
Tridel's unique style of housing
that combines the best of low-
rise townhouse living with the
advantages of high-rise condo-
minium security — have proved
popular with buyers.
The casita concept was
introduced by Tridel about a year
ago at the Casitas of Plaza del
Sol at Steeles and Bathurst. The
124 casitas sold out in a month.
The Pickering project is just
as popular.

low to 1,902 sq. ft. for a three-
storey with two bedrooms, den
and patio.
Prices of the casitas — from
$139,900 to $169,900 — make
them even more popular. Five
appliances are included.
The casitas are in an attractive
tour -storey building with a variety
of roof lines and facades, creating
a pleasant streetscape. There
are no street -level garages.
All parking for casita owners is
in an underground garage. Entry
to the casitas from the garage is
via an elevator to a corridor that
runs along the back of the
homes.
Maintenance fees are
extraordinarly low. One factor is
that each casita is individually
metered for energy control and
comfort. This means you aren't
paying for those who waste
energy.
Each home comes with air
conditioning and a high -efficiency
gas heating system.
The project will be access
controlled with a 24-hour staffed
gatehouse and security cameras
in the parking garage — all the
security features that are part of
light
Tridel's standard of excellence.
To visit the project, exit
Highway 401 at Whites Rd., go
north to Highway 2, and then
east a few kilometres just past
the Pickering Town Centre.To
ensure good service, it's best to
call 420-1890 for an appointment.

Ajax recreational users'
"The Right Price" will mean,

C
or parks and recreation
department services in Ajax next
year.
The department was
requested during this year's
budget deliberations to find out
where they couid make
increases in fees and d1i(rges for
1994. Dubbed The Right Price,
director Tom Flood and his staff
are assessing where increases
were recommended and where
fees and charges shouid be held
at 1993 levels.
Arena activities were hit the
hardest. Ajax coundiiors iearned
at the June 23 executive and
deve'.oprnent committee
rates on the rise Check the'"flem Estate"GUide'
meeting. Most ice rentals at
both the Village Arena and the
Ajax Community Centre will go
up five per cent, although the
increases will not take effect
until May 1, 1994 because
many of the hockey and ringette
leagues have already submitted
their budgets for .next year.
For non -ice rentaLq, such as
lacrosse and ban hockey, the fee
will go up $5 per hour, although
the department has put a hold
on charges for group functions
and special events.
Room rentals at the
community centre will stay the
same and fees for public skating
and swimminq, pool rentals
will also be held at 1993 levels

Organ donations
If you haven't signed the
organ donor box on your driver's
license, The Mutual Group
wants to ensure that you do.
The insurance company is
fronting a national promotion
called By Mutual Consent —
Breaking Barriers to Organ
Donation, in the hope that more
organs are found for the 2,500
Canadians now waiting for
transplants.
Ingrahm Lal, an agent with
The Mutual Group in Oshawa,
led a delegation to Ajax council
July 5 asking that councillors
spread the word about organ
donation. Lai said an increasing
nurnber of Canadians do sign,
the organ donation consent
forms but many don't tell their
families.
Evert if the consent fora; is
signed, doctors cannot retrieve
organs over the objections o
Ia Lal explained.
'We have to tell our "arn;1fes,
we want our organs donated
when we die,"' Lal said.
By the end of 1991, 14,425
organ transplants had been
performed in Canada but only
40 per cent of those in reed
receive donated organs. The
overall survival rate after one
year is 90 per cent.
Cal Murphy, the
coach/general manager of the
Canadian Football League's
Winnipeg Blue Bombers and
political columnist Dalton Camp
are two of Canada's most
notable personalities who have
received organ transplants.
Victor Davis, a gold ;pedal
swimmer for Canada in the
1984 Los Angeles Olympics, is
probably the most celebrated
donor. When Davis was killed
during a tragic 1989 accident
Montreal, six people got second
chances at life becz se his fat:ner

The philosophy behind the
success of the Finished Picture

f you're tired of the hustle and bustle of
the city and looking for someplace quiet,
with room to stretch your feet, then
>< Selective Homes has the house — and
the town — for you.
Selective Homes has a home to fit every budget
— from $109,900 for quiet country lots — to over
$1 million for huge custom-built waterfront estates.
All properties are located in beautiful Kawartha
with a number of lots in the Village of Omemee,
centrally located between the City of Peterborough
and the Town of Lindsay.
Omemee is a paradise for the outdoors lover.
Situated on Pigeon River (Omemee means pigeon in
the Mississauga native dialect), the village is
surrounded by great fishing, boating and hiking
opportunities. With access to the Trent -Severn
waterway from the river, Omemee is also a gateway
to the entire Kawartha area.
There are two parks, a swimming beach,
playground and picnic area right in the village,
making Omemee the perfect haven for both retired
people and couples with young families.
From 6109,900 for quiet rawary Iota.
Most Selective Homes lots in Omemee are within
walking distance of two village schools. The schools
are named after Lady Eaton (of the department
store family) and Scott Young (the author and father
of recording artist Neil Young), Omemee's most
celebrated former citizens. There is also a proposal
to build a high school in the village.
The Selective Homes motto is "we give you what
you want, not just what we have," sod you don't see
what you're looking for, the company will go the
extra mile to find the perfect home somewhere else
in Kawartha.
Whenever you find your dream home, it will be a
quality house, built to last and priced within your
budget.
Selective Homes offers Kawartha-lifestyle with a
large selection of bungalows, side -splits and 2 -
storeys.
Quality features abound in all Selective Homes
houses, including a silent floor system with a lifetime
guarantee, low E argon gas-filled Repla windows
(with a 10 -year warranty), plywood roof sheathing
and R28 insulated walls with R40 insulated ceilings.
