The building is in desperate need of repairs and PACT were previously given a Dec. 31 deadline to vacate. The environmental group asked for an additional month to find other accommodation. Ajax Mayor Jim R'itty said he has been in contact with his Pickering counterpart R'avne Arthurs who assured him there will be a place in Pickering ready for the group by the end of January. The Ajax Fire Department, after inspecting the PACT headquarters at Notion Road, reported that extensive repairs are required, especially to the roof. The repairs will cost the town more than $ 15,000. PACT will have to sign a waiver form, absolving the town of any liability should an accident occur during January. Tax certification fees rise The tax certification fee for the Town of Ajax has been increased from $10 to $15. Ajax, along with Scarborough, still has the lowest fees in the Greater Toronto Area. Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby, Markham and Toronto charge $20 while Aurora. East York, North York and Richmond Hill charge VS. Sign of the times in Pickering Village Phase 11 of the Pickering Village signage plan will likely get under way in the next couple of weeks. Inotek Signs. who were awarded phase 1 of the $12,500 project, will also perform phase 11. Ajax picked up the $6,000 bill for the first phase while the town and the Pickering Village Business Improvement Association (BIA) will split the $6,500 cost for phase 11. The BIA will not have access to their 1993 funds until the new year so the Town of Ajax will put up the necessary funds now from the promotional reserve fund. The BIA will reimburse Ajax when their money comes in. Work is being held up pending Ministry of Transportation approval, but Mayor Jim Witty expects the decorative sign package to get underway "in the next couple of weeks.' Campitelli wants an increased capacity for waste, a required building deleted (although it would be built if demand warranted), the ability to transport material that his company can't recycle and permission to include some residential waste. Council instead rubber-stamped his original proposal and told him to wait until the company has established a good corporate reputation before asking for expansions; or re -apply. Residential plan challenged A zoning bylaw, approving residential expansion of the Devonside Estates in north Ajax, has been challenged by the neighboring Hickory Heights Estates. Town solicitor Ron Hawkshaw described the objection as 'frivolous' but said he and planning director Peter Tollefsen will attend the Ontario Municipal Board hearing Jan. 4, 5 and 6 in council chambers 'to ensure the town's interests' are protected. An application from the Christian Life Centre for a reduction in required parking has been accepted by Ajax's Executive and Development Committee. The church was built in 199 with one parking space for every 2.5 seats. The applicant proposed to reduce the required parking to one space for every rive seats, which is the standard requirement for all churches in the town. A revised site plan from an Ajax industrial liquid filter manufacturer has been approved. Wm. R. Perrin Co. wanted permission to build an addition to the existing building for an engineering office, light -assembly area and warehouse space. The company has agreed to provide landscape improvements and pay a $4,291.98 non-residential levy to Ajax Hydro. $24,000 worth of asbestos removal in town buildings Asbestos removal for three town -owned buildings in Ajax will cost more than $24,000. More than $20,000 worth of work has alreadv been done at the works department building on Mackenzie Avenue. Almost $9,000 went to Envirosafe Inc. for the removal of asbestos and re -insulation of piping in the building, as per a labor ministry order. Another $4,121.64 will be paid to T.S. Health and Safety for consultancy costs. As per a second ministry order, a further $4,.26.50 will be paid to AC& I Services Ltd. for the removal of all asbestos from the building. The latter two firms were also hired to remove and control asbestos insulation at the equipment depot and maintenance shop buildings. T.S. health and Safety will be paid almost $8.000 in consultancy fees while the removal work was performed by AC&I Services, at a cost of $9,820. None of the work was budgeted for, so the money will come out of the building repair revenue. 9 Days Left Until Christmas! sans -C The Weekend B2Y News, December 18, 19, 20, 1992 A3 PCANADIS IAREHOUSET DON'T SHOP ANYWHERE UNTIL YOU COMPARE st 01, • + app`+ r.5 G°Q teayao-`GQ A4 The Flo zchael Schroeder a 1't C, a I horio.q —k., , A Week For The Christmas Season Moa. -Wed. 10-6 Thurs.-Fri. 10-6 Sat 10-5:30 Sun. 10-5 1410 bayly 5t. According to information officer Don Terry, the station's 2,800 operation and construction employees have raised a record amount of money this year. This year's contributions topped last year's efforts by approximately $30,000. "We didn't set any specific target this Year," Terry told The Bay News. "R'e just hoped to raise an additional 10 per cent over last vear." Local hydro employees staged a number of fund-raising events during the United Wav campaign period. Thev included bake sales and a number of what Terry described as "kick off" events. However, the bulk of money was raised through employee payroll deductions. "More than anything it was a matter of people digging into their pockets," he said. A formal presentation by Ontario llvdro to the Ajax and Pickering United Q'ay will be announced at a later date. Libraries receive $3,000 grants Both Ajax and Pickerin_ public libraries will receive grants for 53,000 towards computer technology which will allow them to participate in a province - wide information and resource sharing network.
