Nor does he worry that one of them might get knocked out in a scuffle. In the spring, he had a piece of tissue thinner than half a hair's breadth trimmed from his cornea by a computer -guided laser beam. The surgery lasted 45 seconds. Previously, he was able to see at 20 feet what a person with good vision can see at 600 feet. Now his sight is practically perfect. At Prince Arthur Avenue and Bedford Road, in an historic brownstone house, is the clinic where about 200 people have come since February 1992 to correct their nearsightedness by excimer laser. 'After 20 years, I have a new pair of eyes," said Jane Inglis, 25, whose sight is now better than 20/20 without glasses. "It's really a liberating feeling, just to wake up and no longer be living in a fog.' The investigative procedure, called excimer laser surgery or photo -refractive keratectomy, was first tried in 1987. Fifteen thousand people in Asia, the United States, Western Europe and Canada have undergone excimer laser surgery. At least 90 per cent had their eyesight improved dramatically enough to drive a car legally without any corrective lenses. That success rate — 20/40 vision or better — has crept up to around 94 per cent among patients treated in the last two years, say Doctors liarold Stein, Albert Cheskes and Raymond Stein of Scarborough Eye Associates. In a few years, Canada's 6 million near sighted people can have the option of discarding their glasses or contacts, or donating them to museums. "It could become the most commonly performed surgery in medicine, surpassing 150,000 operations a year for cataract surgery," said Albert Cheskes, an ophthalmologist at Scarborough Eye Associates. Detective Sorace, 41, says, "The majority of the calls are in the middle of the night and I no longer waste time putting my lenses in." "What's more," he said, "I got poked in the eye and my lens popped out while trying to quell an armed man 2-1/2 years ago. With natural vision of 20/25,1 feel more safe on the job." Apart from being unable to see her bedside alarm clock without squinting, Susan Marchione, 34, said, 'It sounds corny, but I almost feel healthier not to have contacts in my eyes." Proponents acknowledge that the long-term effects are unknown. The first person to undergo the procedure "has remained stable — no change," said Columbia University eye surgeon Stephen 1.. Trokel. In 1983, Trokel became the first scientist to suggest excimer lasers, used for precision cutting of computer chips, could be adapted to correct myopia — the inability to ase distant objects clearly. Doctors are still experimenting on correcting farsightedness and astigmatism. The laser, with a dose of 'cold" ultraviolet energy that leaves surrounding tissue undamaged, removes layers of tissue one -millionth of an inch thick. In excimer surgery, minute calibrations are worked out by computer to determine how many layers of tissue should be shaved off. At night, some still experience a glare — bunches of long points of light coming from a point of light, or halo — a ring around a point of light. The discomfort usually tapers off after three or four days. Dr. Albert Cheskes, Dr. Raymond Stein and Dr. Harold Stein of Scarborough Eye Associates leaves the cornea slightly flatter — allowing light I to focus on the image -sensing retina. The patient, lightly sedated and given drops to numb the eye, Ilies under the arm of the laser machine, the eve kept open with a special instrument. The epithelium, a protective laver about five cells thick, is removed with a flat blade shaped like a tiny hockey stick. The laser then remove* I 20 to 40 microns of tissue from the cornea which is only about 10 per cent of the total thickness of the j cornea. The epithelium grows back after surgery, The originator of the excimer laser helped in the initial training of the ophthalmologists at Scarborough Eve Associates. Forms of eyeglasses have been tried since the Middle Ages. He is automatically imprisoned for life with no parole for 25 years. His accomplice Maurizio Crupi. 19, is serving a 9 -year sentence. Lopez-Farfan left his Pentecostal Church April 10 early to begin earning out his death plot. He called his wife at their .Ajax home around 10:30 p.m., claiming to have a flat tire. When Patricia Anne Lopez arrived on Lake Ridge Road in Ajax, Lopez-Farfan shot her twice with a .25-cahbre handgun through the heart. Ontario Court. Ontario division, was told. He then removed her pants and underwear. arranging her to appear as if a sexual assault and robbery just occurred. '.Methodically. Eventful year ahead for area boy scouts Scouting continues to thrive in the Pickering -Ajax community, also known in the organization as OWASCO, saes Wayne Vandervagt, the new public relations vice- president. The council of 50 members has arranged an eventful year for its beavers, cubs and scouts. Their adventures include Apple Day on Oct. 16 and 17, followed by camping outings. Other projects throughout the year such as Trees for Canada will allow boy scouts the opportunity to raise funds through sponsors and assist the environment by planting young trees. School boards propose combining adult services The Durham Public School Board wants to see development of a total adult education network in Durham — combining the efforts of the two local school boards and Durham College. "We believe that duplication and competition among publicly funded institutions to deliver adult education is wasteful," said education director Pauline Laing in a report to the board this week. 'Therefore we propose methods by which delivery of courses would be co-ordinated and registration processes combined.' The proposal is one of seven which the public board is submitting to the province this week, under a provincial plan to encourage partnership agreements. Others include sharing transportation and computer services with the separate board, and development of school-community partnerships with social agencies — expecially those serving ethnic groups. Under fare connection, passengers with a valid GO ticket or pass will ride free on municipal buses to and from the Pickering, Ajax or Whitby GO train stations. They just show a GO ticket to the local transit bus, then transfer directly to the GO train. Procedure is reversed on the trip home. Pickering Town Centre and GO Transit are giving away tickets each month from September through December. Ballots to win tickets are available at the mall and in leaflets at Pickering, Ajax and Whitby GO stations. Ballots should be dropped into designated boxes in the Pickering Town Centre. Separate school board seat becomes vacant Durham Region separate school board is looking for the replacement of a trustee, Ginette McCann. who has recently resigned. McCann, who is representative for Ajax, Pickering and Uxbridge, may be replaced by Gary Lauriault. a former trustee she defeated in the last election. He says he is interested and will apply. Safe disposable available for diabetics' needles Ajax -Pickering area diabetics using syringes now have a safe place to dispose of their used needles. In the winter of 1992 BFI Medical Waste Systems introduced an environmentally and hygenically safe way for diabetics to dispose of their needles for only $20 a year. Now there are 58 diabetic depots set up in Toronto and the surrounding area — including PharmaPlus Drug darts Ltd., 24 Harwood Ave. S., and Pickering Village Pharmacy Ltd. 24 Church St. S. In the past diabetics had nowhere to place their needles. so they put them into cans, bottles, etc. But this has proven to be both dangerous to people and a problem to the recycling process. The needles are to be placed in a BFI puncture resistant container with Sharp's name on it. This will hold approximately 100 syringes and lancets. The programs are quite successful, according to a BFI representative. People interested in using this program should contact their local diabetic depot at participating pharmacies. Durham Region Police say the robbery occurred at 3 a.m. Sunday morning. According to police, a man, wearing a balaclava -style ski mask and carrying a large hockey -type equipment bag, approached the gas station attendant and demanded cash and cigarettes. The attendant was told that the robber had a gun in the equipment bag. However, no weapon was reported seen. Police say another man stood lookout at a nearby telephone booth. Both men fled the scene together. The masked robber was described by police as a medium -built male with no discerning accent. Public invited to review Pickering's Official Plan Pickering planners are inviting the public to a series of neighborhood meetings next month to receive input into shaping Pickering's new Official Plan. Pickering's urban area has been divided into 15 neighborhoods. A town planner has been assigned to each neighborhood. The &tanners will hold meetings on Tuesday and Thursday nights during October and November to hear views of residents. Meetings will be held at the civic complex and library beginning at 7 p.m. For details or to pick up a planning bulletin describing the process, contact the planning department at 420.4617. The rural areas of the town will also be holding meetings. Times and places have not been announced. Altona forest land swap proposed by Van Kempen Pickering Regional Councillor Kip Van Kempen hopes there may still be a way to stop the Altona Forest from being developed. He plans to present a motion next week asking council to consider pursuing a land swap with Bramalea — arranging to get the forest in exchange for provincial lands now controlled by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Metro Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (MTRCA). Van Kempen said he pursued the idea with MTRCA staff after the group appeared at council last week protesting the forest deal. 'It behooves us as a council to at least ask about this kind of alternative,' he said. Hot tar splash injures nuke plant roofer A Scarborough man, working on the roof of a generator building at the Pickering nuclear station last week, received second- degree burns after hot tar splashed onto his face and back. According to a Durham Region Police report, the workman was performing roofing work on knit 5 on Sept. 24 when an air bubble in the hot tar burst and splashed him.
