THESE POWER LINES COULD LIGHT UP A WHOLE TOWN. AND THAT'S TOO MUCH FOR YOU. Let's get right to the point. Overhead power lines are dangerous. They carry more than enough electricity to kill on contact. Every year people die because they didn't look up. So, if you're moving trucks, cranes, equip- ment, ladders, scaffolding or anything else, be sure they do not touch or even come close to power lines. If you're starting on a new job site, you should always check to see where the power lines are. Next time you buy a pair of work boots, why not consider buying a Pair that is shock resistant. PICKERING TOWN CENTRE 420-3801 Establish lines when laying tiles is all a matter of laying it on the line when it comes to putting tiles down on a floor. It's important to establish working lines before you tile, in order to ensure the job is done properly. In a rectangular room, you start by measuring and marking the centre points of two opposite walls. Then stretch a chalk line between these two points and snap it to mark the centre line. Follow the same procedure for the other two walls. To ensure a 90 -degree cross before snapping the second line, check the intersection with a carpenter's square. If the room isn't rectangular, place the two working lines in the major area fir?. of a room. Lay loose tiles along one centre line — leaving a gap of approximately one-quarter inch between tiles. If the space between the last full file and the wall is less than a half tile, move the centre line one-half the closer to the opposite wall. Repeat the process along the other working line. This method of laying out tiles gives wide border tile around the edge of a rectangular room. If the room isn't rectangular you may want to experiment with layouts that give a full file along the longest wall, or at points where cuts would be most obviously best. For more helpful hints about tiling, call Carpet Towne at 831-21 11. We have to get back to customer service in this country," says ............ management consultant Deborah Nowlan. "Marketing, sales techniques and customer service must all come together. Continually throwing money at the comTao— won't any — as some owners tend to do — won't solve the problems. For any company to be successful, it must first have a good financial team at the bottom; a solid foundation," she says. Management consultant Nowlan speaks from a depth of experience as a consultant. She's come to accept the fact her profession doesn't make her a very popular person in some areas. Having a stranger come in to restructure your company, from the bottom up, does tend to shake up some staff members. But winning popularity isn't Nowlan's job. Fortunately, she has the strength of character to tackle what she knows must be done. In the past four years, while in the process of building her own company — D. Nowlan & Associates — Nowlan managed to Bet several businesses on track. While most of her work is considered highly confidential, one current contract is being watched with considerable interest as she attempts to accomplish an unusual feat. That feat is to develop a real estate company into a fully co- operating team of experts driven solely by the concept of delivering total service to each customer. "A lot of small businesses right now are overstaffed, poorly run. Backroom meetings are often a company's biggest downfall," she adds. "Everything worth saying should be said in the boardroom." Nowlan knows about boardrooms. Now into her second term as a trustee for the North umberland/Neweastle Board of Education, Nowlan — who's sat on most of the board's committees — keeps busy. "It's scary what goes across that board table," she says. "Times have changed. There are negotiations; unions to deal with. And it's more important than ever that we keep the lines of communication open so people know where their money's going." A NEW IMAGE FOR YOU! SEE CLEARLY... NATURALLY - Without Gasses! N„wlan studied marketing, economics, psychology and advertising at Sir Sandford Fleming and Trent Universities. "But I got most of my training afterwards,” she says, "by reading and studying. Everyone wanted me to be a teacher. But I didn't want to be a teacher." "I wanted to study urban development — be a problem solver, a decision maker — but I was told I couldn't do those things." She savors the irony that she now site as a school trustee. "I was also considered too young to be on the school board." she laughs. Wearing another of her many hats — as project manager with the Toronto School of Business in Oshawa — Nowlan tries to instill some of her assertiveness and energy in students as they prepare to enter the workforce. "They all seem to think they can go out and make 335.000 a year. start at the top and dictate the terms," she says with a smile. "I try to train them so their expectations equal what employers are prepared to offer." It's not an easy task. But Deborah Nowlan is not known for taekline, easv work.
