Ajacian faces charges in Metro gun -knife case An Ajax man is charged with being an accessory after the fact in a shooting and knifing incident outside a restaurant in Toronto last week. Shi Shing Choi, 28, of Cornwall Street in Ajax was charged by Metro Toronto Police for his part in the incident. In addition, Choi faces a number of weapons charges, according to Mike Sales of the Toronto police force's media relations department. According to police, a fight started inside Ming's Restaurant on Jarvis Street in downtown Toronto at approximately 12:45 a.m. Sept. 4. The altercation continued outside the restaurant where two men were stabbed and shot by an assailant. At last report Phong To, 22, and Phillip Fitu, 20, of Toronto were listed in serious but stable condition in a Toronto hospital. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Shun Gee Tsai, 24, of Concord Avenue in Toronto. Sales said Ajax resident Choi was not directly involved in the shooting and knifing. Don't let a do-it-yourself job turn into an adventure story Work safely AJAX ,., 1920 Bayly St., , Max 427-0791 00 :Ajax yesterday approved a $47,000 tender for a double resurfacing treatment — much to the delight of a small group of residents who turned out to witness the decision. The road was originally slated to be asphalt paved over a 2 -year period at a cost of $98,000. However, the decision to resurface the roadway with a less costly treatment will save more than half the cost and be completed in half the time. Works staff indicated during a meeting in July the double surfacing treatment — a liquid tar mixed with crushed stone that compacts over time — was a more cost effective solution. The roadway is not a heavily traveled route and is suitable for this type of resurfacing, staff said. "It should last a long time," engineering deputy director Rov Maniar told the committee. "We are looking at about a 10 - year life or longer — with regular maintenance, of course." The work will be done by Miller Paving Ltd. of Markham. It will take approximately two weeks to complete. Miller was the only company to submit a tender for the work. Initial projects for the cost of the surface treatment presented in July were estimated to be approximately 341,000. Although the final price is approximately $6,000 higher, !Maniar said staffs estimate was provided by the construction indust rv. However, that was simply a general inquiry. Ward 5 Councillor Pat Brown was among those who supported the decision, saying the road resurfacing along Lakeridge Road was long overdue. "The condition of this road has been absolutely atrocious," she said. Returned Pickering councillors to be busy Next week promises to be busy and hectic for Pickering Town councillors who are returning after a long summer holiday. On Monday Sept. 14, executive committee will reconsider the matter of the Altona Forest which has been simmering on the back burner since December 1991. At that time a massive public turnout sent the question of developing the forest to the provincial government. The weekend Ba N ' Bay News, September ll, 12, 13, 1992 A3 PlckennLr There's been no formal answer yet. But council has decided to revive the issue. A similar large turnout of environmentalists, school -children and unemployed construction tradesmen is expected to stretch the Sept. 14 meeting long into the small hours of the morning. Then, on Thursday Sept. 17, council's planning committee will consider final plans for a 117 -home subdivision on the edge of Altona forest in the Highbush area. Both of the matters are then scheduled to come before the full council meeting on Sept. 21. It appears that it's "back to business" with a vengeance for Pickering council. "Without a nourishing lunch. kids are going to rur. out of gas by midafternoon," says Marc Ludwick area director of Weigh - Watchers for Southern. Ontario and the Maritimes. "However, she continues, packing a wholesome lunch is only half the battle. The best lunch in the world is of no value to your child if it gets tossed out or tradec for jtunk food." L &rick suggests that parents actively involve their children ir the lunch -making process as much as possible. if they helped to make it themselves, children will have a greater sense of 'ownership' when it comes time to open the brown bag and dig in. Kids need only some patience and well-informed guidance to become masters of the art of preparing and packing a nutntiona. lunch that they nil enjoy eating and, perhaps. bragging about to their friends. Weight Watchers offers the following tips to help turn you and your children into brown bag buddies: • Kids know the foods they like to eat. Cold, leftover pizza made with low-fat cheese may sound 'yucky' to you but is a great lunchtime treat for kids. Choose toppings that are vaned and nutritional. • Sandwiches are still the most popular hunchtime staple. Experiment with different whole grain. breads to determine which Yom child prefers. Dont forget that buns, bagels and pita make interesting alternatives to sliced bread. • if you and your children make schoo! lunches the evening before. leave the 'wet' 7 SCHOOL ingredients like tomatoes or light mayonnaise to one side until the morning. This helps keep everything 'fresh'. not 'soggy'. • Choose foods that will travel well and can be safely left in a warm desk or locker for severa. hours. Frozen juice boxes will thaw by lunchtime and help cool the lunch bag's other contents. • Include a nutritious low fat. low -sugar treat that wil. help keep your child away from the candy machine. U Mk weekend Bay News, September 11,12,13,1992 Great Canadian jazz-rock fusion band Lighthouse here by Dan McLean 110ne Fine Morning proved ...._ to be one fine hit for ,::_.ti.:>.:.: O renowned Canadian jazz- "`~~` rock fusion band Lighthouse. However, the string of great 1970s hits that followed from this innovative band very nearly didn't happen. Rumors at the time suggested back in those late 1960s "not so sunny days' Lighthouse was a band at the end of its musical rope. After years of being highly respected, yet relatively unknown beyond the friendly confines of its Toronto homebase, Lighthouse was giving it one last chance. If One Fine Morning didn't become a breakthrough hit, then the band would seriously consider dousing its promising yet unfulftlled legacy. However, to the delight of both the band and thousands of fans, the song was a hit. The rest, as they say, was history. A string of great music followed, including such immediately recognizable hits as Hats Off to the Stranger, 1849, Broken Guitar Blues, Sunny Days, Pretty Lady and many more. In total the band collected an impressive eight gold and one platinum albums between 1969 and 1974. Lighthouse earned four Juno Awards as Canada's best rock band. The group played virtually every major concert hall, including New York's Carnegie Hall and Bill Graham's famed East and West Filmores. They were the fust rock band to headline the Newport, Monterey and Boston Globe jazz festivals, and the only act other than Jimi Hendrix asked to perform twice at the Isle of Wight Festival in England. Lighthouse was asked to represent Canada at Expo '70 in Japan. Breaking up in the middle stages of the 1970s, the band re- united for a weekend concert at Ontario Place in September 1982 — drawing more than 35,000 fans. Now 10 years later, Lighthouse is back once more and set to perform at Oshawa's Purple Onion on Saturday Sept. 19. The 10 - member lineup features its original nucleus including drummer and founder Skip Prokop, keyboardist Paul Hoffert, Ralph Cole on guitar and lead vocalist Bob McBride. As well, several of the band's original and dynamic horn section return. Since the original demise of Lighthouse, Prokop worked in several areas of the communications industry. He was always a respected drummer of note during his early days as a session musician and former member of great Toronto band The Paupers. His energetic drumming always represented the driving force behind Lighthouse. Prokop composed and sang many of the group's best hits including the aforementioned Sunny Days and Pretty Lady, as well as penning One Fine Morning and 1849. Bob McBride's great vocal range was a highlight of the band's first hit One Fine Morning. His musical roots trace back to the early Yorkville scene in Toronto and he spent several years on the road with legendary Bonnie Hawkins. McBride's vocal lessons with Johnny Mathis developed his unique style. He was hired on the spot during an audition with Lighthouse. McBride has released several solo efforts over the years, but is most recognizable as one of the country's best radio and television singers. Lighthouse released a "best of" compilation collection in response to the demand of fans everywhere. Denon Records released The Best of Lighthouse — Sunny Days Again in July 1990. The album generated renewed interest. And in March 1992, the band released a CD called Live at Carnegie Hall — a collection of 1972 performances featuring Lighthouse's classic performances. All in all it's a fascinating chronicle for a band that very nearly never was. The show at Oshawa's Purple Onion on Sept. 19 is sure to provide 'one fine time" for both old and new fans alike.
