Ajax
Public
Library
120 magazines, periodicals
await public use
Ajax Public Library has over 120 magazine
and periodical titles in its collection. The
lar -,e and varied collection is available for
patrons to borrow and browse at either Ajax
Public Library branch location.
Titles include news magazines such as
Newsweek, Time and Maclean's; fashion
magazines like Flare, Vogue, Glamour and
Mademoiselle; business periodicals including
Canadian Business, Business Week and
Financial Post Magazine.
Magazines that appeal to a wide variety of
ages and interests are included in the
collection: People Weekly. RoUing Stone,
Travel & Leisure, Saturday Night and others.
Periodicals and magazines often have the
most up-to-date information available on
current events and topics. To assist readers in
accessing the information available, periodical
indexes are maintained at both branches of
the Ajax Public Library. Most periodicals are
indexed, with articles listed by topic.
Among the most well -used periodicals are
the consumer magazines. Consumer
Reports, Canadian Consumer and Protect
Yourself are all kept on file at the library.
Some issues are available for loan. Others are
for in -library consultation only.
Generally, the current issue of a periodical
is kept for in -library display for one month. A
year of back issues is available for patrons to
borrow.
The library collection may also be used to
browse magazines before purchasing a copy or
subscription. Some patrons may find using
the library magazines more economical and
environmentally conscious than buying
personal copies.
Most magazines and periodicals may be
borrowed for a 3 -week loan period. For more
information, or to browse the collection, visit
either branch library or call the main branch
information desk at 683-4000.

School security -safety
manual being begun
Durham Public School Board is
establishing a security and safety manual for
Durham schools in response to general
concerns about school safety.
Trustees this week accepted a policy
statement that would see Dave Brown,
superintendent of operations, establish the
manual and a committee to oversee its
implementation. It is the first time Durham
board outlined such a policy and manual.
The committee would also provide
instruction for teachers during professional
development days. and establish procedures
for reporting and reviewing breaches of
security in schools.
New students can try
schools this week
The start of school next week can be a
traumatic experience for fust -time students,
and their parents.
To help ease the transition, all Durham
public and separate schools are open this
week so parents and children can visit and
get to know teachers and routines.
Contact your local school or call Durham
Public School Board at 576-4600, the
Roman Catholic Separate School Board at
576-6150.
Public board junior
kindergarten vote soon
Durham public school trustees will
decide at their next meeting whether to
proceed with plans for junior kindergarten,
and whether those plans should use
teachers or early childhood education
workers (ECE).
The ministry of education has ordered
local boards to start junior kindergarten in
September of 1994 for 4 and 5-year-ol(b.
Durham and boards across theprovince
feel it unfair for the province to demand a
program requiring an increase of millions
in local taxes while cutting grants to school
boards.
"Should we just be rolling over and
playing dead?" Pickering Trustee Iain
McCully asked trustees this week as they
considered a preliminary report from
administrators.
He and other trustees feel the province
should be taken to court, although board
solicitors say that would be futile.
Oshawa Trustee Don Mcllveen said
teachers average $50,000 in salaries, and
ECE workers average $25.000. "To our
taxpayers, the difference between these
would be millions of dollars each year."
Education Director Pauline Laing and
Superintendent Carol Yeo, the architect of
the preliminary plan, both emphasized the
plan at the next meeting will place the
traditional model, with certified teachers,
at the core of the new program.
There were a lot of "ifs" about any
alternates. Alternative models, such as
existing day care services and ECE
programs. would be worked out, if parents
joined together to request them and if
ministry approved.

Town Centre owner's
quarterly loss higher
Despite losses of $37.8 million last year
alone. the major financial backers of JDS
Investments — the company that owns the
Pickering Town Centre mall — say they'll i
stand behind their investment.
JDS has been a continual money loser
since Mississauga dentist Jack Tee purchased
a 73 per cent controlling share last year for
$6 million. JDS is now controlled by JSJ
Equity Holdings. a company owned by Tee.
Tae and his Hong Kong backers 1
immediately injected 118 million into JDS
after banks refused to advance the company
any cash.
Tae and a family member personally ;
guaranteed the interest on a $50 million loan
with Citibank Canada. That loan matures in
November. However, he says he intends to
renew the loan during the next few months.
During JDS Investments annual meeting in
Toronto last week. Tse pledged his continuing
commitment towards supporting the ,
financially ailing company. Tse said he'll
keep funding JDS as long as the company
shows positive signs.
It was reported JDS losses continue to 1
mount during the first three months of 1992.
This year's losses amounted to $5 million. up
from $4.1 million in the first quarter of 1991.
However, the company's cash flow i
shortfall eased to $4.3 million from $6.6
million.
JDS seeks approximately $4 million to
complete work on its shopping malls in North
York and Cambridge. The company has
interests in three office buildings and
shopping centres. It owns approximately 40
per cent of Canada's Wonderland amusement
park.
Canada Supreme Court
acquits sleepwalk killer
The Supreme Court of Canada last week
upheld an acquittal decision of a Pickering
man who killed his mother-in-law while
sleepwalking four years ago.
Kenneth James Parks was acquitted of
murder after doctors testified he was asleep
when on May 23. 1987. he beat his mother-
in-law to death and attacked his father-in-
law. In a 6-2 decision last week, the Supreme
Court of Canada upheld the acquittal.
During his original trial. it was reported
Parks. while sleepwalking. drove from his
Pickering home to his in-laws' house in
Scarborough some 23 km away. He then
attacked the sleeping couple with a fire iron
and knife — beating his mother-in-law and
stabbing her five times.
Parks choked his father-in-law until the
man became unconscious. Parks then drove
to a police station and confessed to what bad
happened.
It was reported during the 1988 trial that
Parks was under stress as a result of
marriage difficulties, a gambling addiction
and difficulty sleeping.

Pickering airport lands acquired in 1973 and
now declared surplus.
According to Sandy Hutchison, transport
ministry press secretary, the land could be
up for sale as early as this fan or winter —
once necessary studies are completed.
Local and provincial governments are
being directed to examine local zoning and
development plans. The consultation
between three levels of government will
determine the price of the available lands,
what they could be used for, and who would
gain first right of purchase.
The federal government is also
undertaking a major airport study in
Southern Ontario. Among other things.
this'll determine whether there isa need for
more runways at Pearson International
Airport.
"I don't think there's an exact date when
the (Pickering airport) lands will be on the
market," Hutchison told The Bay News
from Ottawa. The more than 2.000
hectares declared surplus from the total
1.530 hectare block will be the only
property available at this time.
There are no additional lands to be
earmarked surplus at a future date. The
bulk of surplus airport lands made
available are at the north and south ends of
the existing parcel.
The federal government during a budget
speech in February first declared it would
sell part of its proposed airport assets.
In an announcement released by
Transport Minister Jean Corbril. he
stressed the land sell-off doesn't mean the
remaining Ian& wont 1w developed int,, an
airport.
"Any such decision will be subject to the
result of the Southern Ontario area airports
study," Corbel said.
As part of an agreement with the federal
government, both the province and local
municipalities were to be given a first option
to buy the surplus lands. However.
Hutchison says no sale priority is
determined yet.
The minister's announcement said airport
lands retained by the transport ministry will
continue to be leased for residential.
commercial and agricultural purposes.
Pickering staff starts 25 -
year plan study
Pickering town planners have launched a
2 -year process to consult residents and
technical experts to lay out Pickering's
Official Plan for the next 25 years.
"How do you feel about Pickering?
"Is it turning out the way it should?
"How should it develop in the future?"
These are some of the questions posed by
the planning department in an August
planning bulletin. The bulletins will be
issued monthly through the town library
and planning department to keep residents
abreast of the planning process.
The planners' fust step has been to divide
Pickering into 28 chunks. based on
neighborhoods. There are also three special
study areas: the airport lands. Seaton and
an area around Greenwood and Kinsale
that will be affreted by the construction of

"Establishing an ongoing

David in a recent interview.
The head office of Color Your
World agrees. They've started a
program to ensure customer
satisfaction.
Store managers take intensive
courses to back up the guarantee
with knowledge and expertise to
make 1 -time customers into ongoing
clients.
But David and Sandra are taking
the whole lesson about ongoing
relationships one step further:
— They're going to be married in
October.
"David started with Color Your
World in Midland, where we both
grew up," explained Sandra. "When
the opportunity came two years ago
to manage the store in Whitby, we
jumped at it."
Things must be going well for the
two of them. The happiness from the

They've worked hard at making the

and 32 hours of case studies which
present many of the situations which
first-time customers bring into the
stores.
It's a major educational program,
recognized by the Ontario ministry of
skills development. It's part of a
credit program in interior design at
Durham College.
The course includes numerous
video presentations, a 300 -page
manual and a 4 -hour written exam.
Managers must achieve 80 per cent
before they can call themselves
certified product consultants.
Peter Krussi of Color Your World's
head office says the course and the
Ultimate Guarantee are both
strategies to make sure that when
people come to Color Your World,
they'll be satisfied and will return.
The Ultimate Guarantee is a form
which is given to all customers. It
asks them to rate products and
service. It provides a 10 per cent
refund if customers were unhappy
with the service.
"The only thing worse than a
customer with a complaint is the one
who hasn't voiced it," says Peter.
"Criticism is welcome. We're trying
to catch that customer that never
talks to us."
He said reply forms coming in from
Color Your World's 285 outlets in
Canada show customer satisfaction
with staff knowledge and the quality
of products and service. It's that
kind of satisfaction that results in
ongoing relationships.
You can become part of the Color
Your World family by visiting David
and Sandra at 1916 Dundas St. East,
Highway 2 at Garrard, just east of
Whitby :Mall.
Don't expect to see them in the
store on Oct. 10, however — they
both have a prior commitment.
