DRP help teach VIP in Grade 6 Durham Police are joining teachers in 47 Grade 6 classrooms across Durham this year to help conduct a VI P program. The VIPs are the students themselves, whom police praise as our best hope for a better future. Best country music on't let the name mislead you. Rock-a-Billies Roadhouse is v still country music at its best. Rock -a -Billies Roadhouse opened June 1. It's bad timing to open in the summer months, but with help from the staff and co-owners, they managed to survive. Not holding back on its grade of entertainment, Rock -a -Billies has maintained a high quality of bands even though there's no cover charge. Rock -a - Billies has entertained its clientele with such performers as Eddie LeBlanc, Smak Dabb, Paul Weber, Wayne King, Dick Riolan, Bobby McGee, Al Matthew and Jocelyn Marie. Rock -a -Billies has a friendly, courteous staff which tries to maintain a family atmosphere. Always there's something different each night of the week. Even the staff get into the entertaining — singing, playing instruments and providing copy. Even the owner gets up and entertains people with his famous rendition of Tiny Tim's Tip Toe Through the Tulips. Ajax The program stands for Values, Influence and Peers, and tries to show Grade 6's how peer pressure influences behavior in areas such as stealing, vandalism and drug use. Pickering Library computer offers more to users Users at Pickering Public Library will find extra features in the computer this month. By using their library card number, users can find out which items they have out (especially useful when young children have 'lost' books under the bed), and how many fines they have outstanding. Users will also be able to place holds or reserves themselves on books that are out, rather than having to ask staff to do this for them. The new features will save time for both the public and staff. They are easy to use with the simple instructions at the terminals. Those wishing to continue having staff help them with reserves and user information will still be able to do so. A4 The Weekend Bay News, August 28, 29, 30, 1992 Choosing crystal stemware ,....,......Crystal stemware is the finishing touch to a beautiful table, and will enhance the enjoyment of the beverages served. 4'hen choosing crystal stemware, consider some of these factors to ensure you will be happy with your choice: Pick up each piece in -.our hand — a well designed glass should feel balanced — not top heavy — easy to pick up and hold, a base in proportion to the glass. Many designs today have elegant tall stems — these look wonderful but can be more easily kncx-ked over. Choose a design you and -.our family will be comfortable using. The cut design on the stem should complement the shape of the bowl of the glass. A well -cut design will help refract light and give crystal the sparkle we admire. Check for clarity —.good crystal should be clear. Less expensive crystal can have a faint yellow or grey color. Most crystal manufacturers produce many sizes of glasses. Consider your lifestyle and choose the sizes that you will use most. The most popular sizes today are red wine (can also be used for white wines), flute champagne (great for any sparkling wine and some desserts), hi -ball (an all purpose tumbler for water or tall drinks), and old -fashion (a good glass for juice and other beverages). Other sizes available in many patterns are water goblet, white wine, sherry, liqueur, champagne/sherbet and brandy. Hardwood floors care hen it comes to caring .-W for hardwood floors, a little bit of gentle cleaning goes a long way towards preserving a finish that lasts. Ernie Jones of Carpet Towne in Pickering says the two best ways to deal with the daily buildup of dirt on any hardwood floor is a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment or a gentle sweep with a broom. However, the beating motion of vacuum cleaner power heads should definitely be avoided. The abrasive action of a beater bar can cause scratches and other marring scrapes on highly polished hardwood, Jones says. Use a damp cloth to wash waxed hardwood or urethane finished floors. You might also want to use a product called Dura Lustre cleaner for urethane finishes. For satin finish floors it's suggested an occasional buffing with wax once or twice a year will preserve the shine. The YAUV iENDS&RillANTS i jilitiAiOCIfkR., same waxing regimen is suggested for hardwood and urethane finished floors. High -heeled shoes destroy hardwood floors. They can also cause severe damage to vinyl, wood or ceramic floors. Stiletto heels are 80 times the weight of the person wearing them, Jones says. TALK AS LONG AS YOU LIKE! for only 11110111 Residential long-distance telephone alternative ickering and Ajax residents who are fed up with paying long distance charges to talk to friends in Oshawa - - or Markham or Uxbridge can now take advantage of a new telephone service that gives unlimited long distance calling in the Toronto area. It's a service that has long been available to businesses. It now is being introduced to residential users by Metrowide Communications. For a flat rate of 819.95 a month, residents can telephone anywhere in the greater Toronto area, including Mississauga and Brampton, as many times and for as long as they like. The service comes because of the mystic confusion of long distance networks in the Toronto area, and a decision by the Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) which allows private companies to start demystifying these networks, according to Metrow idc. The CRTC decision came two years ago. It ruled that private businesses could lease inter -city lines from Bell Canada and then share the lines with small businesses and residences. Large businesses have always had the ability, and the dollars, to lease inter -city and inter -provincial lines. But this is the first time the opportunity has come to residences at an affordable price. For a one-time installation fee of $58.8:5, and a $19.95 monthly fee, Pickering and Ajax residents can now telephone Oakville, Aurora and Newcastle with no long distance charges. Simple maths will tell you that anyone who now spends more than $20 a month in long distance charges in the wider Toronto area stands to save a great deal of money under this system. Metrowide gives each subscriber a special telephone that has been programmed to provide the service. It's an ordinary touch tone telephone with a single line. When you press one of three special buttons, the telephone automatically connects you to the Metrowide network and you proceed to make your free long distance calls. You can make as many as you like, whenever you like, and the charge will be the same — 1119.95 a month. Subscribers must still pay Bell Canada their regular monthly telephone bill, but now with no long distance calls in the Toronto area. Ron Crowe, president of Metrowide, says business is booming. The majorproblem seems to be people are so used to the telephone system as a monopoly they can't believe such a service is now available. Most people are familiar with these kinds of telephone lines in a large business. But because of the CRTC deregulation ruling, this kind of service can now be provided to everyone. The Metrowide service is being arranged in Pickering by the Safe and Sound Store, on the ground floor level of the Pickering Town Centre. Drop by for a demonstration, or telephone them at 798-7080. It could be a telephone call that will save you a lot of money in the future. "Every week we'll have something different." Regalis is located on the ground floor of the Pickering Corporate Centre — just west of the Pickering Town Centre mall on Pickering Parkway. The restaurant is open seven days a week, Monday to Friday from 11 am to 11 pm, and on weekends from S pm to 11 pm. Partners Fakalis and Regas will hold a traditional grand opening party later this fall — when many old friends and associates return from their holidays. By that time, maybe you'll have already discovered Regalis and be an old friend as well. .Pickering Corporate Centre, 1305 Pickering Parkway 420--7577 g Al2 Mw Weekend Bay News, August 28,29,30, 1992 Inside a This .Issue Rvm a i q Bay News s , ecia d v st erh ng 0 1 .soft.. The Weekend Bay News, August 28,29,30, 1M A17 D SCHOOL Glaisdale Montessori School bigger and better ast Monday saw great excitement at Blaisdale Montessori School as children and staff witnessed the unveiling of their huge sign and raising of the Canadian flag to commemorate the expansion of Blaisdale's Pickering location. "With the extra space we can now add to our present program for children 2- 1/2 to 5 years, an expanded Toddler Program (ages 18 months to 2-1/2 years), facilities for our Montessori Elementary children (ages 6 to 9) and — most exciting of all — a gymnasium for all our children," enthused Eleanor Wilson, the principal of Blaisdale. Located on two acres in a quiet, secluded street with nearly 10,000 square feet of floor space, Blaisdale is now the largest Montessori school in Durham. Established in 1969, Blaisdale is also one of the oldest Montessori schools in Canada. There are two locations in Scarborough, one in Ajax (in Pickering Village), in addition to the Pickering location on Toynevale Road, south of Kingston Road and Rougemount. At Blaisdale Montessori School, children are taught individually from educational materials devised by Dr. Maria ':Montessori, which includes Practical Life Skills, Sensory Learning, Language, Math and Cultural Activities. Following Dr. Montessori's dictum to give "the best to the child", Blaisdale has always strived to achieve excellence and continually seeks to improve its program for the children. With this in mind, staff are required to take an Adlerian course (which furthers the understanding of children's behavior to help them develop self- esteem, and aids in maintaining harmonv in the classroom), and training in First aid. Through the years. Blaisdale has added Classical Music Appreciation (starting at 2-1/2:). French and Computers. Also available as options will be Karate, Dancing, Woodworking, Sewing, Cooking. Swimming and Drama. Eleanor Wilson entered the Montessori field 31 years ago because, "I wanted the best for my children." Prior to that Mrs. Wilson taught from Kindergarten to Grade 8 in Canada and N ursery School in England. All Montessori staff at Blaisdale are (children over 6 years). A18 The Weekend Bay News, August 28, 29,30, 1M Pioneer heritage preserved here at Quaker Hill by Marjorie Green hat would summer be without at least one drive in the country: spending a day — even a rainy one — absorbing some local history while enjoying pastoral pleasures? Back in the days when this part of the world was all heavy bush right down to the shores of Lake Ontario — and our American cousins were at war with the '.Motherland — hundreds of United Empire Loyalists came here in the early 1800s to carve their homesteads out of the wilderness. Although much of this noble heritage has been lost to us, one area of Durham managed to hold fast to its Quaker roots. A visit to Quaker Hill, just northwest of Uxbridge, off Highway 4:, is like a step back in time. There a special kind of solitude surrounds the Friends fleeting House. Built in 1820 to replace an earlier 1809 log structure, the Meeting House was used regularly until 1925. after that its membership fell into decline. Services are now held, just once a year, in June. In the Burial Ground on the other side of the narrow dirt road, gravestones date back as far as 1812. A little further on down the same dirt road lies the Uxbridge-'cott Museum. Consisting of an old school, church, farmhouse. barna and out -buildings, the museum is a treasure trove of historic memorabilia, fact and trivia. Curator Allan McGillivray enjoys entertaining visitors there with his enlightening and often amusing anecdotes. A thorough researcher and historian ("It's often like fitting together the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle'), McGillivray likes nothing better than to uncover new items of interest on old familiar subjects. And so it was when the University of Guelph sent him some photographs taken by Lucy (laud Montgomery of the interior of the Manse in Leaskdale. He was able to see clearly for the first time just how the famed author decorated her home. This being the 50th anniversary of L.M. Montgomery's death, McGillivray was in the process of creating a special exhibit of photographs, floor plans and a model of the Manse when he received another pleasant surprise. The Manse was up for sale. Lxbridge Town was hoping to purchase it and open it to the public. It now seems likely the Uxbridge -Scott Historical Society will have the opportunity of recreating the decor and furnishings of the home in which Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote 11 of her books which followed the very successful Anne_ of Green Gables. Maud's stillborn middle child lies buried, not far away, beneath a gravestone in the cemetery adjacent to the Taj Mahal -inspired Foster Memorial. This year will also see the opening of the museum's Carmody House. Although it dates back to 1860, "We want it to be just a While it is no longer in existence, a plaque honoring the school is also on the museum grounds. 1820 Quaker HiU Friends Meeting House typical farmhouse," says'. McGillivray. "We plan to furnish it in the 1920 era so we can use a lot of things already in our collection." If all goes as planned, it should be open in time for the Society's 21st Annual Steam Threshing Days Aug. 29 and 30 from I to 5 pm each day. Also celebrated this year was the 175th anniversary of The James School: the first school to be built in the Uxbridge area. In the 1830s, Reverend Adam Elliot, a saddle -back minister from Pickering, would ride north regularly to conduct Anglican church services in The James School on Quaker Hill. While in Uxbridge, he would stay overnight in the home of Quaker clergyman Ezekial James, just across the road. Then, as now, Quaker llill always seemed to provide a pleasant destination for anyone out riding in the country. -t OUR BEST JUST GOT BETTER AN ADDITIONAL OFF 5 T0:20% ON SELECTED VERTICALS & VENETIAN DRAPERIES -whh Your own & ACCESSORIES Memurenunts SAVE 50% Made To Mea*Lw* - I'VENETIANS V2 MICRO VENETIANS EXAMPLE. 24—A3r 1 0330 LIFETWE GUARANTEE IT.1PT0 I"' 917 ?404.4" CAO&C SAVE UP TO 25% OF I F SELECTED DESIGNER DRAPERY FABRICS FREE! Kirstic Alley of Cheers thanked husband Parker Stevenson for "the big one," Burt Reynolds thanked wife Loni Anderson for 'two big ones," and comedian Gilbert Gottfried said that if what Pee -wee Ilerman allegedly did at a Florida porn theatre was a crime, "I'd be on death row by now.' The 44th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will have to go a long way to top last year's burlesque. But with three comedians as co -hosts, anything can happen. Presiding this vea , r will be Allev, recently canceled talk -show host Dennis Miller and Tim Allen of Home Improvement. Comedy will he the theme throughout the night. wish Roseanne Arnold, Jerry Seinfeld, Richard Lewis and Super Dave Osborne as presenters. Walter Miller, executive producer of the Emmv telecast, says comedy will give the potentially tedious show some edge. "We like to keep it as whimsical as we possibly can, and I think we will," Miller predicts. Leading the Emmy list with 16 nominations is Northern Exposure, followed by Murphy Brown, Seinfeld, The 64.-h Annual Academy Awards and the Hallmark Hall of Fame production of Miss Rose WAile, with nine each. The Emmy nominations are no stranger to controversy. Due to a change in eligibility, the fuss this year revolves around a decision to let guest stars compete with series regulars. Christopher Lloyd and Kate Neffirn, who both made guest appearances i on isney's Avonlea, are therefore nominated as Outstanding Lead Actor and Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Other "guest nominees' include Kelsey Grammer as Outstanding Lead actor in a Comedy Series for a spot on Wings, Harrison Page as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for an appearance on Quantum Leap, Tyne Daly as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for a guest stint on Wings and Shirley Knight as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for a one-shot on Law & Order. 7o . ....... ... 0 --- - - - - __ - I . . . . - I . , I - .
