Winston Webber, a member of the National Symphony
Orchestra in Ottawa.
Arthur Ozolins, a truly great Canadian pianist who is
familiar to audiences around the world, will play Grief s

Symphony as soloists. The annual presentation of
Handel's ,'Messiah is in December, with four outstanding
Canadian soloists.
The concertmaster of the Oshawa Symphony, Joseph
Peleg, performs a dazzling virtuoso masterpiece, Lalo's
Symphoniv. F.spagrw)le. Brilliant Canadian pianist Philip
Thompson visits Durham Region for the great Piano
Concerto No. 4 of Beethoven.
Finally, Mark Dubois, whose iibrant personality and
splendid talent need no introduction to local audiences,
will conclude the season in an unforgettable orchestral
evening of vocal music from the best of opera.
To receive a flyer or for further information, contact
the OSO office at 579-6711 in Oshawa.

DRP staff sergeant jailed for
obstruction
Durham Region Police Sergeant Ian (Sandy) Garvock,
42, July 23 in General Division Court was jailed 60 days
for obstructinx justice to help a friend who's identity the
court is keeping secret.
Staff Sergeant Ryrie still faces a discreditable conduct
charge under the Police Act at a future date not yet set.
Involved is a friend's 1989 impaired driving charge.
A 5 -week DRP internal investigation in 1990 found
Garvock tampered with police files and computer records
on the friend. Then he telephoned the friend back to say
things were looked after and the matter taken care of, the
court was told.
Mr. Justice Paul Hermiston told the court Garvock's

Separated families meet safely in
Pickering now
The Durham supervised access program offers separated
families a safe and neutral setting in which regular visits
with or exchanges of a child can take place. Locations of
the visit centres are Pickering, Oshawa and Port Perry.
Volunteers are needed to perform various duties such as

they say.

and song.

Canada's 125th birthday was shared. The evening ended
with a campfire.
The cake was lettered by spark Katie Macina, guide
Andrea Moloney, brownie Christine Demchuk, pathfinder

Brenner tells why he opposes
region plan
Maurice Brenner, acting mayor of Pickering, issued a
statement last week saving he's not in favor of the proposed
Durham Region office building being built in Oshawa. The
reason for his decision:
'While I do not have any problem with a region building
being built in Oshawa, I cannot support it because I do not
feel such a facility or any new facility, is needed. It is my
feeling region government is too big and the present Greater
Toronto Area review could change this level of government.
It is based on this belief that 1 cannot support any new
region building at this time,' said Acting Mayor Brenner.
'On the matter of jobs, I do agree with labor that
projects of this magnitude will generate employment and
would support capital projects when warranted. But to
build a building that is not needed would be no different
than buying a car when you don't have a permit to drive,
even though such a purchase generates jobs in the
automobile industry; Brenner said.

SUMMER'S HERE, and the Red Cross is reminding
people to take time between barbecues and the beach to give
blood.
With schools closed, businesses on reduced hours and
regular donors away on vacation, the summer months are
often a tough time for the Red Cross to collect blood. But
t6 Weeketxl Bay Mev, July 31, August 1, 2, 1-992 A5
surgery is still scheduled, accidents still happen and people
with blood disorders like hemophilia still need blood
products regularly.
.More than 800 people must give blood each weekday for
the Red Cross to meet the requirements of patients in the
hospitals it serves throughout central Ontario.
Healthy individuals age 17-70 are encouraged to attend a
clinic this summer and give the gift of life.
Donors are reminded to bring identification when they
come to donate at the Pickerine-Ajax Red Cross branch
transfusion service clinics.

FAMILY DAY
Choosing crystal stemware
rystal stemware is the
finishing touch to a
beautiful table, and will
"' enhance the enjoyment of
the beverages served.
When choosing crystal stemware,
consider some of these factors to
ensure you will be happy with your
choice:
Pick up each piece in your hand —
a well designed glass should feel
balanced — not top heavy — easy to
pick up and hold, a base in
proportion to the glass. Many
designs today have elegant tall stems
— these look wonderful but can be
more easily knocked over. Choose a
design you and your family will be
comfortable using.
The cut design on the stem should
complement the shape of the bowl of
the glass. :1 well -cut design will help
refract light and give crystal the
sparkle we admire. Check for
clarity — good crystal should be
clear. Less expensive crystal can
have a faint yellow or grey color.
Most crystal manufacturers
produce many sizes of glasses.
Consider your lifestyle and choose
the sizes that you will use most. The
most popular sizes today are red
wine (can also be used for white
wines), flute champagne (great for
any sparkling wine and some
desserts), hi -ball (an all purpose
tumbler for water or tall drinks), and
old -fashion (a good glass for juice
and other beverages). Other sizes
available in many patterns are water
goblet, white wine, sherry, liqueur,
champagneisherbe_t and brandy.
There is crystal stemware made to
fit every budget — from mass
produced glass to machine -blown,
machine -cut stems to mouth -blown,
hand -cut works of art. Zwiesel by

The We&Md Bay News, July 31, Att.gost 1, 2, 1992 A21
Duch bullets with .Big Al 5 weeps more
he Guild Inn in
Scarborough wanted to
` do something special to
celebrate its 60th anniversary, so
legendary American gangster Al
Capone and his friends were
invited.
It's all part of a unique and fun -
filled evening called Al Capone's
Birthday, an audience -interactive
musical celebration where a host
of costume -clad 1920s "guys and
dolls" pay their respects to
Scarface himself.
The setting is the Southside
Speakeasy — Big Al's personal
hideaway. The excitement begins
as a fresh batch of "booze" arrives
after a close brush with the "feds"
on its way up river.
Both the performers and
audience take part in the evening's
celebrations. Actors interact with
audience members as everyone
sits down for a hearty meal with
Capone and his gang.
The event is billed as three
hours of raunchy fun. It has been
an enormous hit with Guild Inn
patrons since the weekly Friday
night performance began June 12.
In fact it's been so popular that a
scheduled 8 -week run has been
extended five more weeks.
"It was our 60th anniversary
here and I was looking for
something a little bit different to
try and celebrate that," Guild Inn
general manager Jeff Bell said,
explaining why he booked the
production.
"It's the first time we've tried
something like this. It's been met
with overwhelming success.
That's why we held it over an
additional five weeks until
September."
Al Capone's Birthday is one of
three audience -interactive
productions created by Ken
Atkinson and his talented
company of performers.
Atkinson's past performing credits
include several television stints as
a dancer on a number of CBC
productions.
fie was the, resident
choreographer at Toronto's
CFTO-TY from 1977 to 1981,
working on such series as Stars
on Ice, Circus and the ;bliss
Canada and bliss Teen Canada
pageants.

The sht,w ran for a full year at

making it an obvious "winner",
according to Atkinson. This
unique revue incorporates both
the audience and a 3 -course
dinner into a script that creates
an effect of not just watching a
group of actors on stage — but
actually being a part of the action.
People are made to feel as

in 1929 prohibition America.

That brings the total to over $16,000 we contributed to the
hospital as part of our $25,000 pledge from Donna, myself and our
company and all of our great staff. Special thanks to Murray and Pat
Bradley, Vince Murphy, Ed Leaver and Bill Whitehouse on this
project.
We at Dickson's were fortunate enough to have an entry in the
Ajax Home Week parade this year. It had an environmental theme
on the many ways we can help preserve and improve on the many
blessings we have.
Our firm, like so many other firms, relies on volunteers for many
of these extra -curricular activities. A special tip -of -the -hat to Lynne
and Jim Parker, Marg and Ken Bell, capably assisted by Dave
McAIlister, Mike Bricknell, Sheila and Adam Simpson and Ed
Dickson's Nate, the McAllister, Parker and Simpson kids.

h is getting close to that time when you will hear the official kick-
off for Doug Wellman, Gale Mossman and the 1992-93 Ajax -
Pickering United Way campaign team.
I can't help but think the campaign will not be quite the same this
year with the recent loss of Katherine McKay, deputy clerk for the
Town of Pickering. She was one of our most recent past presidents
of the United Way.
Without her bubbly smile and positive attitude, it will not be quite
the same! Well all have to work harder this year.
Appreciation
Ajax Environmental Affairs Week is over for 1992. I had the
pleasure of co chairing the project this year with Angela Bober.
As well, there was excellent help from members of the Ajax
waterfront advisory committee and Ajax department of parks and
recreation, in conjunction with Councillors Pat Brown and Jim
McMaster. Through the schools and a multitude of groups, we feel
we made a significant impact on the environment throughout Ajax
this spring.
A special thank you to Mayor Jim Witty and his council for their
ongoing support and leadership. Congratulations to both Parkside
School in Ajax and St. James School, the lucky winners of our
composters in our lucky draw this year.
We know the teachers and students will put them to excellent use!
Waterfront
You'll notice improvements along both Pickering's and Ajax's
waterfronts this year. Ajax is also holding a public open house to
receive input for their official waterfront plan.
The town is working hard to prepare this plan. If you would like
:o express your opinions, we hope to see you July 29 at 12 to 3
m. or 6 to 9 p.m. at the Ajax Community Centre main lobby.
]: you have any questions, you may also contact Gwen Winder or
tea.. El iott at 683-4550. As chairman of the waterfront advisory
c rn;:tee, I can assure you the town is making every effort to
receive public input!
In passing
You may have noticed Ontario Hydro's rate increases to us since
1990 are about 25 per cent. Are you aware the NDP provincial_
government -controlled Ontario Hydro is now looking for another 8-
1/29 per cent raise. Can you afford it? I can't!
Just when you think there are no more hours in the day for
voluntary comrru pity service work, our great service organizations
never cease to amaze me.
Whether it's Rotary, Civitan, Lions, Kinsmen, Legion, Optimists,
church groups, community or sports groups, they all seem to possess
:hat something special!
A perfect example of extra effort was just witnessed as ww saw
both Pickering and Ajax Kinsmen Clubs join their kin colleagues
from coast to cons', to acquire 3 million signatures as part of the
Proud to be Canadian effort.
You not only serve us locally, but nationally as well. Thank you
Kinsmen and Kinettes.

Liberty Village offers quality and affordability
here's no substitute for
experience when it comes
''. to making the most
important investment of
your life, says Saverio
Montemarano of Melody homes.
The longtime builder with the
musical name has been a growing
concern for more than 25 years —
building some of the finest quality
homes anywhere. Saverio
Montemarano says those in the
market for a newly -constructed
house should always consider the
background and experience of the
home builder.
"We are fully experienced in the
building industry," he said in an
interview. "I don't think people
should let those who are relatively
new to this business build the most
important investment of their lives."
One of Melody Homes' most recent
projects — Liberty Village in
Bowmanville — is a perfect example
of how years of experience seem to
have taught this developer how to
build quality homes. And at a price
that's truly affordable.
This 750 -home community nestled
in a beautiful natural setting
overlooking the Town of
Bowmanville and Lake Ontario is a
most appealing site to behold. More
than 200 families have already
moved into their Liberty Village
homes and more than 250 houses
have been sold.
This community offers 37
attractive models including 20
single-family, seven single -detached
above grounds, and three "semis".
In addition, a select "Multi Choice
Collection" allows buyers to tailor
their homes to suit their lifestyle.
This option lets you to choose
such things as the number of
bedrooms you desire and the
location and style of floorplan —
among other things. It allows
buyers to pink a design and floor
plan for 14 models of homes,
Montemarano said.
It's a "hands-on" principle that
Melody homes has become famous
for. In keeping with a commitment
to affordability, prices in Liberty
Village start as low as $112,990
(semi) and even the largest home on
a 40 -ft. lot — the 3,005 sq. ft. Rose
— starts at only 5209,990. The
price includes GST!
A model 2,230 sq. ft. Lily home
located at the recently -opened
Liberty Village sales centre offers a
glorious illustration of Melody
Homes quality. This 2 -storey bright
and spacious model is a unique
combination of superior roominess
and a warm cozy appearance.
The main floor features a high
entranceway ceiling, a neatly tucked

'THE CHOICE Bunmm-
away washroom and laundry room.
The kitchen includes a bright eating
area — thanks to an adjoining
glassed patio door. A family room
with fireplace adjoins the
"Hollywood kitchen".
The first floor dining room is
separated from a cosy living room
by tasteful and traditional french
doors. A curving staircase leads to
the second floor where there are
four bright bedroorns. The master
bedroom features a washroom with
an attractive step-up whirlpool
bath, separate shower stall and a
massive walk-in closet.
The other three bedrooms contain
a full-length closet and a window
providing plenty of natural light .
The basement is full size, well
insulated and has a high ceiling.
,Melody Homes not only offer
houses that look remarkable, they
also make buying a home an
attractive deal too. A special rebate
program offered by the developer
allows buyers to essentially more
than double their 5 per cent down
payment.
Most homes are interest free until
1994.
For convenience, Liberty Village
is just minutes from Highway 401
and approximately 30 minutes from
Scarborough. The future also
includes current zoning for a local
school, large park and a shopping
plaza.
But seeing is believing when it
comes to buying a home. Take the
time to check out one of the most
attractive residential projects from
an experienced and trusted builder
for yourself.
To reach the new sales centre exit
Highway 401 at Liberty Street in
Bowmanville and go north for
approximately four minutes.
Liberty Village is on the right hand
side.
