Purple loosestrife plague hits
Rouge River park
The purple loosestrife plague now grips Rouge Beach
Park on Pickering's western boundary. A research and
prevention effort is being launched.
Purple loosestrife is a European plant that has in recent
years started to destroy Ontario's diminishing wetlands.
It's estimated that close to I million acres of North
American wetlands are lost to "the purple plague"
annually, as the plant leaves wetlands homeless for nearly
e
every species of fish, animal, plant and insect.
Biologists have compared its effect on a wetland to that
of acid rain on a lake.
Project Purple is a program of the Ontario Federation
of Anglers and Hunters, with the assistance of the
Shimano Sport Fisheries Initiative and the Environmental
!'outh Corps. Two teams in Eastern Ontario and the
Bruce Peninsula are controlling and researching the
plant, and educating the public about controlling its
spread.

Rouge Beach Park is at the mouth of the Rouge River off
Highway 401, south on Port Union Road, east on
Lawrence Avenue East.
Local firm pioneers solar electric
energy
Lenbrook Industries Ltd. of Pickering has installed a
one kilowatt solar electric system to demonstrate the
operation of this technology. The site will be used to test
storage batteries from various manufacturers as well as
the operation of different charge controllers and
electronic equipment.
Lenbrook's east parking lot lights are powered by the
solar array as a practical demonstration of a typical
photovoltaic application. Eighteen Solarex MSX -60
modules generate 1,080 watts of DC power from sunlight.
This energy is stored in a 600 -amp hour battery for use
during periods of darkness. Two-way radio telemetry will
be installed to remotely monitor the site. System voltage,
power consumption and the system status can be
displayed at a terminal within the main building.
The Solarex system will be used in conjunction with
technical seminars conducted at Lenbrook Industries Ltd.
Regular training sessions are held for both domestic and
international clients.
Seeks Ontario Riding House of
Commons seat
Whitby businessman Andrew Davies last week
announced he will seek the Reform Party nomination in
Ontario Riding.
The seat in the House of Commons is now held by MP
Rene Scetens of Ajax.
Davies has lived in Durham Region for the past 28 years
and is the president of Computer Integrated Networks, a
consulting firm specializing in meeting the computer needs
of small to mid-sized companies. Davies also serves as a
captain in the Ontario Regiment (RCAC).
Centennial welcomes three new
governors
Centennial College welcomes three new members to its
board of governors. They bring fresh perspectives and
expertise to the college leadership.
John Kalsbeek is the director of satisfaction at Nissan
Canada Inc., where he is responsible for corporate
training and dealer operations. His experience as an
automotive technician and his broad understanding of the
industry at the wholesale and retail levels adds a
significant dimension to the board of Centennial — a
college with a national reputation in the transportation
industry, saga Cathy Alexander, corporate affairs
director.
Cameron Cowan brings 40 years of a:perienee in
elementary and secondary school education to Centennial.
Recently retired as director of education for the City of
Scarborough public school system, he has first -band
knowledge of the changing demographies and
multicultural mix of the community, as well as extensive
government relations experience.
Alok Mukherjee is an associate with Partners in
Equality. His consulting work involves issues relating to
anti -racism, employment equity and organizational
change. In addition to serving as a volunteer in several
Metro -area committees, he is a published author on
community and race relations issues.

Circulation, information are
switching to new computer
Ajax Public Library will soon be operating on its new
automated library system, Dynix. Within the next three
weeks, both circulation and information desks will have
access to patron records and the bibliographic database
on the new system.
The technical services department of the library will
begin using the computer catalogue system to catalogue
and make available a large number of new acquisitions.
Public access catalogues will be set up and will be
available to patrons later in the summer. Patrons will be
able to search in the catalogue for titles, subjects, authors
and more.
They will also be able to examine their own patron
records. Assistance will always be available to patrons
using the public access catalogue and to those patrons
needing individual reference help.
Dial -in access, from home computers to library files,
will be added to the library services in the coming weeks.

Fairview Lodge needs volunteers
Fairview Lodge, Durham Region's nursing facility for
seniors, is looking for volunteers to assist with the
following programs on a weekly basis: swimming on
Mondays, walking Tuesdays or Thursdays, refreshment
cart, day trips, hairdressing and wheelchair maintenance.

Prestigious international
principalship for McMurtry
Ajax teacher Jim McMurtry who was dumped by the
Durham public school system last school year for his
liberal teaching methods, has been hired as principal at
the exclusive Swiss junior college where he once taught,
Neuchatel.
Teacher McMurtry is son of Associate Chief Justice Roy
McMurtry, former Ontario attorney general and British
high commissioner. He was suspended at Ajax High
School and moved to Pickering.
He resigned here and took a job in British Columbia in
March.
For a while McMurtry faced an assault charge from a
superior after an incident said to involve the enrmpling of
the superior's sheet of paper evaluati% his work at Ajax

The local public school system is part of a province -
wide organisation under heavy criticism these days as

Ajax Transit Ridekey system being
expanded
The province of Ontario will deposit another $19,000

being showcased by Ajax Transit.
The Ridekey computerized fare system used by some
1,500 secondary school students since September was
introduced last year as a pilot project sponsored by the
transport ministry. Ajax Transit is looking to expand the
program and replace some of the expensive $35 Ridekeys
that some students have been less than careful with.
A $2 substitute plastic punch -coded card will be
introduced. It was reported during last week's budget
advisory committee meeting that some 300 Ridekeys have
been lost, not returned, damaged or confiscated.

The introduction of $1,500 lower cost coded cards will
replace the student Ridekeys. These in turn will be
distributed among adult and Handi-Transit riders in the
future as the computerized fare collection system is
expanded.
The town will pay $1,865 towards the approximately
$19,000 total cost for the program expansion.

WEDNESDAY EVENING of last week in the
Courtyard, Pickering Village, storytellers Norman Perrin
and Meryl Arbing told of mosquitoes large enough to
carry off cows, unlikely feats their grandfathers
perpetrated, and anything else they could think of to
convince an appre.-iative audience that the finest tall tales
originate in P.E.I. rather than the Ottawa Valley — and
vice versa. Their performance was the first of a series of
six Wednesday evening concerts sponsored by the Fox and
Flowerpot Pub, 109 Old Kingston Road. On continuing
Wednesdays, more of the country's most accomplished
storytellers will be featured. The evening gets underway
at eight. Admission is free. For further information

STORYTELLER GRANNY APPLE will delight
children 2 to 7 years of age with her stories July 30 at 2
pre at Bay Ridges branch of Pickering Public library.
THE GRASSROOTS MUSIC FESTIVAL Aug. 9 at
Pickering Museum Village is a performance event designed
to celebrate the many varied forms of music and folk art
that have become part of our heritage. The festival will
feature performanees by some of Canada's beat known
musicians and folk tellers. There will be folk art displays
and demonstrations, children's activities and musical
workshops. This event will run from noon until dusk.
CORRECTION
Due to an error, an Ontario Ford and
Mercury Dealers advertisement which ran
June 12-21, 1992 featured an incentive of
7.9% financing or $750 cashback on new

.Frank's proposed ad hoc committee would work towards
continuing the efforts of Michigan resident Richard Matthews. The
American native has single-handedly gathered research to prove his
ancestor was wrongfully executed as a traitor on April 12, 1838.
The incident virtually drove the Matthews family from the
Pickering area 150 years ago.

"I think it would be good to have support on the Canadian side,"
Frank said "It would be helpful to legitimize his (Matthews) project
and to further it."
1 -le added the group would also work towards placing a memorial
plaque at King and Toronto Streets in downtown Toronto — the site
where Captain Matthews and Lount were hanged more than 150
years ago.
'This requires funds and a formal (government) decision," Frank
said The committee would make a token contribution towards a
financial shortfall for the plaque being placed at the Necropolis
Cemetery, Frank said.
An Ajax resident last week guaranteed the cost of making the
Plaque. The Bay News sent Richard Matthews a cheque last week
for about $1,000 Canadian from Steve Fearon, 4 Simms Dr.
Fearon would welcome contributions. Matthews last week
determined there's a 10 per cent import duty and there will be other
incidentals.
Richard Matthews had required another $1,300 Canadian dollars

A Plaque currently exists in Holland Landing, Ontario — the
birthplace of freedom fighter Samuel Lount, according to Frank
"I see no reason why a plaque in this area isn't dedicated to the
memory of Matthews," he said.
Frank's writings detailed the story of an archway in Magara Falk
that was erected in 1938 and torn down in 1%7.
The structure was built in honor of those who were executed
during the Upper Canada Rebellion. Frank tracked down smashed
sculpted pieces of the archway and eventually wrote a feature story
about it which appeared in a Toronto daily newspaper.

then we've been in touch and tried to rescue the memory of Peter

Frank says efforts to preserve national history are of particular
importance and interest to many people throughout the country
these days. Many take great pride in these past exploits of former
ancestors.
"There are a number of Canadians interested in preserving the
names and exploits of some of our predecessors."
Contributions should be payable in U.S. funds to Cummings
Memorials and Richard Matthews.

McDonald's Restaurants of Canada
believes it has a special

environment for future

reducing materials used in production and

are minimizing the amount of packaging

suppliers to develop reusable shipping

Products such as sandwich buns, english
muffins, eggs and other dairy products are
delivered in reusable plastic containers.
McDonald's restaurants across Canada
recycle cardboard wherever possible. Take a
look at the new recycled brown paper bag for
all carryout and drive-through orders.
They are nide from more than 50 per cent
recycled fibre. Even the toys, fences and
surface areas of McDonald's Playland for
children are now being made from recycled
materials.

Gus Santino of Color Your World at
the Baywood Plaza, 101 Bayly St. W. in
Ajax, says sea sponges and rolled up rags
are also popular tools of paint
application.
Sponge painting is a particularly
favored method among many people. It's
a simple -to-do application that can
create a stunning, individualized finish.
It often has the look of a wallpaper, but
the design is unlike anything you'd find
in any store.
Essentially you start with a base coat,
then use a sea sponge as a dabbing brush
to apply other colors over top.
"The more colors you apply, the more
elaborate the design and the richer -
looking the texture," Santino said.
"Basically it's left to creative licence after
you've started."
It seems the most difficult aspect of
sponge painting is selecting the right
color combinations. Santino doesn't
recommend any particular choices. It
really depends on the decorating scheme
in a particular room, he said.

are less than $600 during the first
year of ownership thanks to Liza
Homes' $6,500 mortgage assistance
program that is applied to the
