community
centre plan
By Dan Mclean
Ajax council Monday night got its first glimpse of a proposal for a
=10 million community centre in north Ajax.
Local politicians obviously liked what they saw. They endorsed
' a community centre concept plan presented by the town's parks
and recreation department and its consultants.
A public information meeting planned for September will give
.oca residents an opportunity to see and comment on the proposai.
T;:e A-4 community centre will be a 3-phase project constructed
a: Westney Road and Magill Drive. The varied phases of the project
are designed to take into account any money shortfaD which couid
eliminate certain components.
2 phases
Phase 1 is estimated to cost $7.5 million while phases 1 and 2 will
total approximately $9.2 million. Region Councillor Roger
Anderson said complete financing details have yet to be finatixed.
Among the newer components included in the ax murrity centre
proposal is the addition of a 5,000 -sq. -ft. library.
"It's an appropriate addition that will only enhance the use of the
community Centre," Anderson told c=xJL lixorporatirg a library
into the coanrtt 4 centre is seen as a cost-saving moue that would
also attract more patrons. -

The lengthy and often bitter
straggle to bring sanitary sewers
to Pickering Beach in Ajax

home construction in the area
will remain in place at least until
the review is completed.
Council hopes to address the
concern of some residents who
argue the existing character of
the area could be destroyed by
property owners who sever their
lots or build "monster" homes.
A criteria for home -type
construction will be developed.
Praise
Still council's decision came as
welcome news to many of those
who supported the installation
plan.
Pickering Beach resident
Shane Wasmund, who
spearheaded the faction of
property owners in favor of
bringing sanitary service to the
area, praised local politicians for
their decision.
"it looks like we're finally
getting (sewers) and I'm
pleased," he said in an interview
after the council meeting.
"I'm happy with the first
phase (decision to install sewers)
and I'm cautiously optimistic
about the second phase (zoning
review)."
Wasmund, a 9 -year resident
in the area, has presented near
countless written submissions to
council supporting sewers during
the past three years.
If approved by Durham
Region, the first year of the
ITT PAJ
At Pkixnnq
program would include Poplar
Avenue between Beachview
Street and Rangeline Road, and
a small portion of Ruthel Road.
The Town of Ajax is expected
to pay $174,000 for the first
year of work.
Durham Region's share
amounts to $415,000 in year 1
and an additional estimated $1.9
million during the next three
years of the project.
Majority
Council's endorsement was
based largely on a survey
conducted earlier this year. Of
255 letters circulated to
Pickering Beach residents and
property owners, 111 or
approximately 60 per cent
supported installing sanitary
sewers.
Approximately 19 per cent
were not in favor, while 22 per
cent did not respond.
"The favorable response
speaks for itself," Region
Councillor Susan Dulny told
council. calling the sewer
proposai a cost-effective
solution.
Ward 5 Councillor Pat
Brown, the Pickering Beach
local area representative, said
the proposal benefits both lot
owners who have been unable
to build, and residents with aging
septic systems.
It was dear that the majority
favored sanitary sewers, Brown
said. Region Councillor Roger
Anderson praised both area
councillors for their efforts.

his vital role, having suggested

keep JDS Investments Ltd. — the owners of the Pickering Town
Centre shopping mall — a soNent company.
JDS Investments, which also owns 40 per cent of Canada's
Wonder]and, suffered an additional $37.8 million loss for the year
ending Feb. 29. The loss was said to be double that of a year ago.
An $11.3 provision fund that had been set aside ultimately proved
to be woefully inadequate to cover ever -escalating losses suffered.
Tse of Mississauga purchased 73 per cent of JDS from founder
Jack Israeli who retired last August. Tse paid $6 million for his
controlling share and shored up the company with a $12 million
Infusion of cash soon afterward.
He has poured millions into the company since bankers refused to
provide additional credit bans. A JDS representative was quoted as
saying more than $100 million has been loaned to the company.
Tse, a part-time dentist, has been an ambitious investor in Toronto
real estate during the past two years — both for himself and for a
group of wealthy Hong Kong families.
JDS has not paid a dividend to investors for 18 months. But
according to company officials it has not missed payments on its
$425 million debt. Tse has not indicated how long he will continue
to keep JDS afloat financially.

Plans for the final, complete vindication

one thing which it is to be hoped will be

Richard has worked virtually alone and
endlessly. To him alone goes the credit for
discovering Queen Victoria's secret pardon

nothing less than extend complete
hospitality and a grand, welcoming

To erect plaque to freedom hero Matthews
BY Michael Maunder
A Pickering man who was hanged for treason
and buried in a pauper's grave will finally be
hanged by his home town, nearly 160 years after
his ignoble death.
Peter Matthews was a local farmer, one of
hundreds who joined William Lyon Mackenzie in
1837 to take up arms against the wealthy
oligarchy then entrenched in power in Upper
Canada.
They came from all over the new colony:
Matthews from the family farm near Brougham;
Samuel Lount, a blacksmith from Holland
Landing, farmers, merchants and other small
people who felt disenfranchised by colonial
guardians of privilege. .
Faamples
It was a futile resistance movement: the brief
rebellion gtiddy flared and was as quickly routed;
the farmers who marched down Yonge Street
scattered; and in the aftermath, the Brougham
farmer and the Holland Landing blacksmith were
,captured and dealt with, as an example.
They were hanged in Toronto and buried in
Potter's Field in April, 1838.
In 1893, benefactors moved their bodies to the
Tworito Necropolis.
Although the rebellion itself was futile, it planted
the seeds for freedom. British authorities
appointed Lord Durham to examine the causes of
the unrest, and his report led to responsible
100 years
Next year, on the 100th anniversary of the
establishment of the memorial at the Necropolis,
descendants of Peter Matthews hone to erect a
Plaque over their forefaLher s grave, setting the
historical record straight and acknowledging him
as one of Canada's first fighters for freedom,
rather than a traitor.
Driving force behind the memorial is Matthews'
descendant, Richard Matthews, of Caro, Michigan.
Acting Pickering Mayor Maurice Brenner says
the town will erect a similar plaque at the Pickering
Museum on June 28, 1993 — the same day the
Necropolis plaque is unveiled.
The Pickering plaque will be about six miles
from the vanished farmstead of the Matthews
In the late 1800's, British poet Rupert Brooke
wrote about Canada's promisee for the future:
"The breezes have nothing to remember and
everything to promise. There walk, as yet, no

at a pinch, to do without gods. But one misses the

Ajax teenager Rob Bennett
has gotten hold of a great idea
and is preparing to ride with it
The 16 -year-old Grade 12
Pickering High School student
has his sights set on a gruelling
1,040 km ride from Quebec
City to Toronto to help raise
money for Cyde For Kids.
If he can raise the necessary
$3,000 in pledge sponsorships,
Bennett will be among a group
of cyclists from across Canada
taking part
The event is a fundraiser
organized by the Christian
Children's Fund of Canada.
Monies raised will go towards
providing long-term assistance
to "third world" children, families
and communities.
Example
Bennett decided to take part
49
_ _-_-.--
in the Aug. 9 to 22 event after
learning about Ajax resident
Karen Leckie. The 21Wr-old
McMaster University student
announced she would make the
ride in May.
Her story appeared in The
Boy Neurs on June 3.
"I found out about it (the
event) in another newspaper
article," said Bennett. "I read it
and got fairly interested."
The journey will take riders
from Quebec City through
Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston and
Whitby. Riders will average 100
km each day — pedalling
anywhere from four to eight
hours.
While he can hardly be
considered a professional cyclist,
Bennett says he's an avid rider.
"I ride a lot. The furthest Ive
1,040
ever ridden in one day is about
80 km."
The teenager will have his
work cut out for him in order to
raise the required sponsorship.
So far, Bennett's efforts have
concentrated on a door-to-door
campaign to gather pledges.
It's been a tough sell so far, he
admits.
"It's a little slow because all of
the community dubs are dosing
down for the season and it's
hard to get sponsorship from
them," he said.
If you would like to help out
by pledging your support call 1-

West Shore Scoutsplan big adventure
89 MM McGowan
Centennial Colkge
jouraaliam intern
West Shore Boy Scouts in
Pickering eagerly anticipate the
1993 jamboree to be held in
Kananasta in Alberta. This,
despite the fact there are some
financial uncertainties.
"Here we are coming up to
the jamboree and our tents are
In shreds," says Wayne Hoth,
chairman of the group
committee.
"We'll need 12 new ones.
They cost $250 each."
Hoth is only too conscious of
the many financial requests
aimed at people today. But he
is dedicated to the cause of
scouting he has served since
1985.
Fund raising is ongoing with
the organization. There was a
sale of almonds in February.
Partner
Branch 606 of the Royal
Canadian Legion is a very
welcome partner in these
ventures and in all aspects of
scouting. The Legion might also
be helpful in the travel
arrangements for 23 boys and
eight leaders going to the
jamboree.
Several means of
transportation are being
considered. Taking into account
the amount of gear required and
all the camping and cooking
equipment, hiring a bus may be
the most practical.
If this is the answer then the
Legion would be asked to
attempt to provide overnight
accommodation through its
crass -Canada branches.
Some 12,000 scouts from
across Canada win gather at
Kananasta. This is bear
country, which presents special
problems.
The use of food has to be
carefully controlled. Any
carelessness might result in an
unwelcome visit from grizzlies.
A special system of canteens
is being set up.
Kananasta will also provide
further adventure through visits
to places like Banff, Lake Louise
or the Columbia icefields.
Adventure
For some of the boys, simply
being a member of the West
Shore Boy Scouts is an
adventure in itself.
This troop has the largest
number of boys with
exceptionalities in the district.
There are three autistic and one
blind boy. Hoth's own son has
an attention deficit condition.
"We have modified our
programs so these boys do not
lose out," says Hoth.
When it's basketball time
Donald, the b}innd boy, is helped
by his friends to shoot baskets.
He was also able to share in a
unique first aid lesson.
First aid
With no warming to the boys,
two people were brought to the
lesson who appeared to have
been seriously injured_ In fact,
they were very realistically made
up by a friend of the scouts,
Floyd Sutherland.
"The boys reacted very well,"
Hoth says. "Our primary goal is
to promote youth and adults ;o
reach their fullest potential."
John Dunlop certainly
embodies that ideal, having beer
a troop scouter for 30 years.
As he and an expected 80 to
90 boys and leaders from the
district prepare for Kananasta,
they hope the community will be
generous in helping them meet
the many expenses involved.
They also hope to be wearing
a special scarf, clearly identifying
the scouts of Pickering, Ajax and
Whitby at the jamboree.

What's new in books
at Pickering Library
By Linda Linton
Adult services co-ordinator
Fans of British writers, and in particular fans of
the popular Rumpole series, will be happy to see a
new John Mortimer novel, Dunster. This is the
story of two men — Dick Dunster and Philip
Progmire, friends from their schooldays — who
nd themselves at war with one another over a
war crime.
They both work at Megapolic Television. While
Plslip, a frustrated actor, works as an accountant,
Dick is engaged in a TV expose of war criminals.
As Dunster researches his subject, Progmire tries
:o protect the victim of his old school friend's
mer6ess inquisition.
Tae story culminates in a trial scene that is
:ypical Mortimer. This is a novel whica asks us to
:ake sides and raises the question, "Should old
men be 'eft with their secrets?"
Murder mystery
"rouowers of the Sue Grafton novels wili know
we are now up to the letter "I". The latest novel I
is for Innocent is her most intricately plotted novel
to date.
Pa;-erned along the lines of a legal case, the
hove, :s divided A;= thirds. once section deals
with the prosecution, the second with the defence
and the third with the cross examination and
rebuttal.
Tne story is set around the prosecution of David
Barney, a man who walked when a jury acquitted
hu of the murder of his rich wife. Now Lonnie
Kingman, a prosecutor, is suing Barney on behalf
of the dead woman's ex-husband and child. The
statute of limitations is running out.
Along comes Kinsey Millhone. He agrees to
take over the investigation of the case.
It comes as a big shock to Kinsey to find out
everything David Barney claims checks out. But if
Barney didn't murder his wife, who did?
Spy thriller
We also have a new Len Deighton novel City
of Gold. This story is evocative of time and place,
and portrays the tensions and desperation of war.
It is 1942. Rommel's seemingly invincible
Afrika Korps is at the gates of Egypt, perhaps
soon to threaten Cairo itself. In the heady
confusion of war, one thing is certain: there is a
spy in the city of Cairo, and the British must find
him.
In a race against time, and amid the chaos and
disintegration of war, bargains are made between
would-be enemies. As the tension reaches
breaking point, the fragile alliances start to
crumble and debts must be called in — but not
before a confrontation in the desert reveals the
hidden truth.

Tradition
"It's not a real complicated
story," Marie Barker said.
recalling during a recent
interview her initial involveme.7
and distinguished career with S .
John Ambulance.
"The whole family has always
been involved in community
work."
Back in her native Wales, she
trained with the Red Cross. It's
become a tradition of sorts for
the family to be prepared for the
unexpected.
"That's in our family nature
to take first aid. We take in
waifs and strays all the time,"
Barker said with a chuckle.
Chairman
During the next five years she
served as treasurer for the local
chapter's executive board. She
even doubled as board chairman
for a period of approximately 18
months.
The Ajax and Pickering St.

need of all the help it could get
back in those days. The roles
Marie and husband Larry Barker
played were absolutely vital.
`The brigade side was down
to six people. it was the same
old people serving each year,"
Barker recalled.
The chapter's board executive
was a shambles. It included its
new treasurer, and Barb Gorrie
— a long-standing secretary who
served for many years.
Moribund
A vacant storage room at the
Ajax Recreation Centre was the
local office. An aging
amnbulance served both
communities.
"The ambulance was what
you'd call a 'piece of lace',"
Barker said, explaining the
rusted -out condition of the
vehicle.
The chapter's budget
amounted to approximately
$6,000 annually.
"By the time you paid vehicle
insurance and storage rental,
there was nothing left over," she
said.
"We needed more money.
We needed to exoartd."
Transformed
Much changed in a short
time. When Barker left the
executive five years later a
permanent local office had been
found, a budget of $20,000 had
been allocated, four service
vehicles served the community
and more than 30 local residents
made up three brigade divisions.
The executive board
acpanded to six members.
Barker's part in the revival of
the Ajax and Pickering chapter
will be honored in Ottawa on
Oct. 16. Governor-General Ray
Hnatyshyn will award her the
Order of St. John of kr Salem
— the highest recognition Ven
to volunteer members.
Both husband Larry and
former board colleague Barb
Gorne have already received the
K
similar honor.
Dedicated
At the peak of her
involvement, Barker typically
volunteered approximately 20
hours a week — setting both the
financial affairs of the chapter in
order and going out into the
community to raise support and
awareness.
"I did burn the midnight oil
quite a few times when we
started applying for grants,"
Barker fondly recalls.
However, increasing
commitments towards her
Professional career as a teacher
of medical office computer
software led to a less active role.
The time had also come for new
People and ideas to take a
greater hold in the local chapter.
"It got to the point where I

'
need of all the help it could get
back in those days. The roles
Marie and husband Larry Barker
played were absolutely vital.
`The brigade side was down
to six people. it was the same
old people serving each year,"
Barker recalled.
The chapter's board executive
was a shambles. It included its
new treasurer, and Barb Gorrie
— a long-standing secretary who
served for many years.
Moribund
A vacant storage room at the
Ajax Recreation Centre was the
local office. An aging
amnbulance served both
communities.
"The ambulance was what
you'd call a 'piece of lace',"
Barker said, explaining the
rusted -out condition of the
vehicle.
The chapter's budget
amounted to approximately
$6,000 annually.
"By the time you paid vehicle
insurance and storage rental,
there was nothing left over," she
said.
"We needed more money.
We needed to exoartd."
Transformed
Much changed in a short
time. When Barker left the
executive five years later a
permanent local office had been
found, a budget of $20,000 had
been allocated, four service
vehicles served the community
and more than 30 local residents
made up three brigade divisions.
The executive board
acpanded to six members.
Barker's part in the revival of
the Ajax and Pickering chapter
will be honored in Ottawa on
Oct. 16. Governor-General Ray
Hnatyshyn will award her the
Order of St. John of kr Salem
— the highest recognition Ven
to volunteer members.
Both husband Larry and
former board colleague Barb
Gorne have already received the
K
similar honor.
Dedicated
At the peak of her
involvement, Barker typically
volunteered approximately 20
hours a week — setting both the
financial affairs of the chapter in
order and going out into the
community to raise support and
awareness.
"I did burn the midnight oil
quite a few times when we
started applying for grants,"
Barker fondly recalls.
However, increasing
commitments towards her
