The eldest living Matthews descendant is an aged great grandson, resident in Tennessee, the last of his generation. June 28 at 2 pm is the 99th anniversary of the Toronto Necropolis monument which stands over the final resting place of Matthews. It's a common grave with Sharon -Newmarket area freedom -fighter commander Samuel Lount, a Sharon Temple Quaker. Loyal friends eventually moved the bodies of Matthews and Lount to the Necropolis, moving them from the common Potters (unmarked) Field paupers grave into which they were thrown after the hanging. Descendant Richard Matthews says the family wants to correct the record and the Necropolis Monument inscription in the light of the new information. An arrangement has been made for the Neaopolis to donate a granite boulder and mount a new plaque if one is provided. A plaque is proposed which would be attributed to Family and Friends in 1993. This plaque would be unveiled the 100th anniversary day, hokr and minute of the original monument. LANDSCAPING See Our Limited Time Offer on Page "Eleven" (I I) Or Call Us At... ,C3 427-4143 The "Friends" attribution would allow contributions from the Pickering -Ajax and Toronto area, as well as elsewhere — whether they be from communities, groups, organizations, municipalities or individuals — in honor and commemoration of the memory of Captain Peter Matthews. The plaque will cost only a small and really token amount, about $2,000 in Canadian funds. Pickering and Ajax Towns now occupy the former Pickering Township land area whose freedom -lighter contingent :Matthews commanded. His sacrifice and their action, historians will remember, led to the Durham Report Crown Inquiry and the writing of the original Constitution for Canadian democracy. Mayor Jim Witty of Ajax says he's certainly interested in these events and the plaque proposal. What Ajax Town does will depend on the town council and the townspeople, and probably most particularly on what Pickering Town does, for the Matthews home was in the Brougham district now a neighborhood area in Pickering. The plaque would be bronze. To fit the proposed text it would be 18 inches by 24 inches, according to information from Necropolis officials. Parish wants to scour Ajax for hidden basement units By Dan Mdean Newly -elected Ajax Councillor Steve Parish wants to get tough on illegal basement apartments throughout the town. During an executive and development committee meeting last week, Parish made an extended plea for a co-ordinated effort by administrative departments to regulate illegal accessory apartments. He suggested a conditional amnesty could provide an 3pportmity for homeowners to egalize their basement apartments. The planning cepartment must first identify areas of town that would be appropriate for allowing these living units. Units must conform to minimum safety standards and proper rezoning must be obtained to make them legal, Parish said. Council should take a stronger position on the issue, he argued Difficult "I'm not convinced in my mind there is the political will to do something about this," he told committee. "The problem has gone on long enough. We have to do G something." Ajax council is attempting to deal with the troublesome matter through its municipal housing policy statement being developed. A pubfic meeting scheduled for June 8 will provide the latest details from staff concerning the efforts to regulate the type of housing in town. Planning Director Peter Tollefsen told committee the province is fully aware of the need for right -of -entry legislation — the key to enabling staff to identify illegal basement apartments. Municipal inspectors may only enter a home if they receive permission from the owner. Tollefsen expects an announcement of a new law could come by fall. "The cry across the province is unanimous," he said, explaining municipalities across Ontario are demanding a right- okntry law. Unable The town has taken the Position the problem of regulating basement apartments can't be addressed until a right - of -entry law is in place. VIA However, Parish argued it isn't necessary to wait. The town can identify illegal basement apartments by other means — such as fire department inspections. Parish proposes tackling the problem in court — charging homeowners who have illegal basement apartments. The testimony of witnesses or neighbors could be sufficient to lay charges, Parish said. ?m not saying (jack of right - of -entry legislation) isn't a problem," he told The Bay News. "But I think it's been blown up to the point where it's being used as arl excise ria to take on the issue." Regulation "I've got nothing against basement apartments," Parish added. "Basement apartments provide an appropriate niche in the housing market. They just can't be any kind of unit, any kind of way — totally unregulated_" However, Region Councillor Roger Anderson says council has considered similar proposals. During a committee -of -the - whole meeting May 25, Ward 3 Councillor Steve Parish suggested council members meet with Hi -Rise Structures — the owners of the property. The 10 -acre site is the only privately - owned property on the Ajax waterfront. "I would be curious to know what their intentions are with respect to the land," Parish told the committee. "I think it's extremely important to the future of the waterfront not to sit back and wait for things to happen — but to take a pro- active approach." The Ward 3 Councillor added he spoke to the company's solicitor earlier that day. The lawyer indicated his client was "very interested" in a meeting with the town, Parish said. And soon, ,a long list of possible locations will be announced by the Interim _Waste Authority (IWA). The IWA is looking for one site in each of the Regional 'Municipalities of Peel, Durham, and the combined areas of Metropolitan Toronto and the Regional Municipality of York. Over the past few months, the IWA has worked with the public to determine the criteria that will be used to select the long list of candidate sites. However, while this list is an important step, it is not the final one. In about three months time, the list will be shortened to a few potential sites and next year, one preferred site in each area will be selected. Many more difficult decisions need to be made to shorten the long list and make the final selection. The public has an important role in helping to make those hard choices. Your input is important to the site selection process. For more information on how you can get involved, call the Public Information Office in your area.
