An entertaining day of festivities since 1973, this year's festival promises to be no exception. This year marks the first collaboration between the businesses in the community and families surrounding the village. This collaboration is important in that it is hoped the Family Fun Day the festival has to offer will be the beginning step in uniting and creating a long-lasting friendship between the people in the community and businesses in the village. A hard-working committee was organized this year to make sure there were festivities to appeal to everyone. Volunteers were chosen from businesses and families in the community. There is something to be enjoyed by everyone. Country music will be performed by the band Ryder in the Courtyard, and a children's play by the Pickering Players. There will be Sweet Adeline singing by the Eastside Harmony chorus. Story tellers from the Storytellers School of Toronto will perform at the Four Winds Library. Hot air balloon rides will be watched over by a flightmaster. There's a craft bazaar and the Village Soccer Association tournament. Magician Jeff Snape will be on hand to thrill the crowd with his fascinating slight of hand. Children will be able to learn how to make small puppets from the puppet show. The Toronto Banjo Band will be there to perform. There'll be a party under the stars with the music of K*MAC in the Courtyard. Only months after moving into the house, despite being assured by the town the area would remain residential, a commercial business was established next door. Now two sides of the home are commercial properties. Blows says a distress centre is being built at the back of her house. So it was a relief for the Duffin Street resident to hear her home was included among the Highway 2 properties redesignated for commercial use. Differences She had requested her property be included as an amendment to the town's Official Pian. A council committee -of -the - whole decision during a public meeting on April 27 — in Blows' words — allows her to protect her investment by having more options for its use. It will help to sell the property if she so desires. However, approval did not come easily. Many of Blows' neighbors turned ou: cur.e p bi:c mee::ng :o are,:e the commercial use designation. Many, like neighbors Steve Illing, Denise Martin, Vera Knight and Alex Bionke, fear the commercial designation will lead to the eventual destruction of their residential neighborhood. Victim But during a committee presentation, Blows scoffed at the notion. She told her neighbors during a passionate presentation she is the victim in this situation — not them. "We're the innocent people who purchased 8 Duffin — now we're the victims," she said. That was our dream house. We planned to live in Ajax for the rest of our lives. We're prisoners in our own home." Besides an encroaching commercial component, noisy neighbors have been a particular problem since Blows moved into her Ajax home four years ago. Challenge She challenged committee members to trade homes, live there a week without experiencing a major disturbance, Blows said. 711 give them every cent I own in the world, and that's the truth," she vowed. Neighbors ! ice Denise Marin worried about :he res'der.t'.al one home was allowed to be designated for commercial use. Martin called Blows' house a very attractive home. "But if this is changed, where do we draw the line?" she asked, wondering how the town could refuse other applications for commercial uses in the neighborhood. Nervous Neighbor Alex Bianchi said despite including an amendment preventing access to businesses on Duffin Street, there would be no guarantees that the situation couldn't change. You can put it in writing but it can still be changed," he told the committee. "1 think you're naive to think property isn't going to be a problem in the future. Someone will apply for access on Duffin." "Our concern is you're going to change the character of our street a lot more than you intended to." Grace Blows may be the only person on her street who supports the Official Plan change — but she remains undaunted by her neighbor's objections. "Quite frankly I'm glad were included in the commercial (area) — whether the residents of Duffin Street like it or not." Today's computer advertisements may seem to read like another language. Terms like RAM or ROM and Megabyte seem to pop up over and over. I have to admit even I get confused every once in a while, and I have been around computers for a long time. To help me straighten out that "other language" format used by computer sellers, I contacted the staff of Redbaron ( 1991 ) Computer Services. They agreed with me that no matter who one asked about computer terminology, one always seemed to get a different answer. The first part of any computer advertisement is the power rating. On IBM or IBM -based clones (about 80 per cent or more of computers sold today), it is referred to by numbers like 286, 386 and 486. The number refers to the chip used in the computer. In simple terms, the higher the number the faster the computer will process the data you give it. Almost all of the computers sold today use a 386 chip, as most of the new programs need a good dose of power to make them run. So if buying new or used and to be ready for the future, at least get a 386. To let the computer work a program it needs memory. This 'working" memory is Tide We&end Bay News, May 22,23,24, 1M A9 • st►3c:: •;" ;,:a.. - .. _r ate¢-..c:3 .... .., .Y:t.• .:t:+vsrs,z:rS;a ar on isn't all that complicated J g p sated referred to as RAM (short for Random screens varies, so they are referred to in memory of color is stored in slots or ports in Access Memory). Ontario Lottery Update airs every Saturday night at 10:30 o'clock on the TVO Network. A lottery grant of $40,000 helped to build an addition on the museum which resembles a 19th Century home. Ann- Of Green Cables, Road to .-1 Lonlea and Jane of Lantern Hill were all shot there. Each week Ontario Lottery Update features a segment on how lottery funds are assisting worthy projects across Ontario, winning lottery numbers, information on OLC games. and views of interesting people and activities from across the province. The Ontario Lottery Corporation is a Crown corporation responsible for operating provincial government lotteries. To date, lotteries in Ontario have raised more than $4.4 billion for the promotion and development of physical fitness, sports, recreational and cultural activities, the Trillium Foundation which funds charitable social agencies, and projects to help protect the environment. Any part of these proceeds not used within a fiscal year for these programs are directed to the operations of Ontario hospitals.
