Ajax awards night celebration saved The Ajax Recreation Advisory Council's annual awards night will be a celebration after all. The $6,000 item that was originally chopped during Town council budget deliberations last month was resurrected during a council meeting May 4. The change of heart was due — in no small way — to the efforts of Larry LaBelle, owner of the Ajax Axemen hockey club. LaBelle agreed to raise $3,000 and put it towards the awards nigh!. A ja_1; c—Ciineii in n agreeu io contribute $3,500. Ward 4 Councillor Jim McMaster said LaBelle will raise the money through a bingo. McMaster said council's previous decision to remove the item from the town's budget was due to a misunderstanding. 'I think it was a lack of communication,' he said. The awards night is an event that recognizes the efforts of organizers and administrators of a number of service clubs and athletic organizations. It's for the people who work 'behind the scenes,' :McMaster said. During Monday's council meeting, McMaster applauded the efforts of LaBelle and town council. 'I think this is a good example of how governments and community groups can work well together.' Rotary, as many may already know, is part of an international organization of service clubs worldwide involved with a number of charitable projects including community-based work. Two years ago, we were encouraged to get involved with an environmental project. In our district the projects evolved to a tree planting program with an education -type theme. The advantage we saw in tree planting would be to replenish the landscape in a developed part of Ontario and to bring back the natural cycle that plants complete (replacing carbon dioxide with oxygen through photosynthesis), something that is so important for otz trou'oied atmosphere. The advantage of tying the project in with the education programs of our local schools is Community 6, 000 trees By Caroiynne Pendykosid Secondary and elementary students rescued over 6,000 trees from certain death last week when they replanted the trees from the old Sinclair school property in Whitby to new locations across Durham. With plans to build a new high school on the Sinclair Property, that meant finding new homes for the trees. The Durham Board of Education staff created the Trees For All En ironmental Project to see the trees were relocated to new ground. Plans were made to create attractive gardens and natural woodlots at the 51 participating :schools in Durham. This project has also helped the students identify, plant and care for various species of trees and to preserve nature. Students partiapaled in the 2 - week program that involved their own horticultural classes pod erw mniental groups. As vA* stab and students from 14 area scuds visited the sme Apr. 24 to dig oafs,; baMn, poplK elm, ash and dogwood for projects at their own schools The project was coodinated by Durham board planer David Burnham and the on-site geography consultant Don that a young generation of Canadians will learn about environmental science. An environment committee was struck in the club, chaired by one of our members Peter Tollefsen. The committee is working with the Grade 4 and 5 classes of Applecroft Public School on Coles Avenue in Ajax. The students have been busy over the winter designing a site plan for a natural school "tree garden". One of the members of the committee, a landscape architect by profession, Henry Kortekass, has been giving expert advice on species of trees, etc. However, it is quite surprising how knowledgeable the students are regarding the natural growth Of forests, thanks in part to their teacher Miss L. Lopata who prepared the students earlier with a reading list. The research certainly paid off. The site chosen for maximum sunlight is at the south end of the school. It is . front of the school to show o" the project to effort saving Farguharson. Education Centre communications team members and Trees For Life volunteers pitched in to make the program a success. Canada Trust's Friends of the Environment branches in Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax donated $3,500 to the cause. Funds are to be used for equipment and supplies. Generous contributions were made to the project by: Loblaws, Oshawa; Miracle Food Mart, Whitby Mall; Mackie Van Lines; GM; Sernas and Associates; Beaver Lumber in Whitby. These businesses donated bags, trucks, drivers, plod and sqiage assigarm Canadian Tire in Whitby, McMillan Orchards, All Points Delivery, Ajax Portables and local resident Bruce Hannam contributed shovels, gloves, apples, more trucks and a greatly needed tracts All trees for school sites were provided free of charge. The staff paid a nominal price to have the trees removed. By the time the Trees For All Life Project was completed on May 3, ser 6,000 trees were to be spared and given a new drance at a long eontirxting life. the travelling public and enhance the new school building. Trees will be planted by the students of Applecroft on a designated day, once all the plans are in place. The site is adjacent to the school and within view of classroom windows to encourage stewardship by the students. t 1 It A budget has been struck and materials are being sought. A sponsor has stepped forward, namely Ajax Energy Corporation, to donate funds towards the project. The Town of Ajax parks department will also be giving assistance. The director of the school board and Principal Alar. Jones have been rr os' 1 1 11 supportive and very enthusiastic. The planting date (sometime this spring around Arbor Day) will be set by the students. Basically this is a project planned, designed and implemented by the students of Applecroft School, with the guidance of the Ajax Rotan,, Club and the teachers. As a 'natural' tree garden, 'he 1 student project will evolve over time into a natural forest right on the school grounds. It will serve an ongoing science experiment for the next number of years for fixture students. We flipped on the TV — a Rory Calhoun Western, a golf tournament, a baseball game and American Bandstand. We loved the outdoors, but we were also heavily into rock 'a' roll, even though we were only a young teen. Now, as if we were watching A Hard Day's Night in black and white, we vividly remember all the straight -looking white kids 'fruggina and jerking and swimming to such diverse acts as Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Ryrds, even the Who ... all of whom lip -synced, more or lean, to their current lits. We don't remember a particular moment on American Bandstand — just that image of Dick Clark and all those goofy kids dancing as if there were no tomorrow. Why 1966? Because that's as far back as our personal memories of Americao Bandstand go. But even then, it had already been on the air for 14 years. What has led to all this reminiscing is the American Bandstand 40th Anniversary Special which airs May 13 on ABC. To many adults, American Bandstand has achieved iconic status as a piece of Americana, and so has the man who has become synonymous with the show — Dick Clark of the youthful good looks. lie started with the show in 1956, when it was broadcast live from Philadelphia, and he has plenty of memories. 'Bandstand had ben on for four rears when I became hwt,' says Clark. 'I don't remember the first show 1 hosted, but I do remember there was some animosity because the guy 1 replaced was fired.' Everyone obviously got over that. 'I remember the first day we went on network, and everyone said we would fail; we were No. 1 in our time slot within 30 days,' Clark says with satisfaction. Ile gives credit to ABC, which, he says, 'was the Fos of its day,' for taking a chance on the show. Clark, an admitted promoter, says in all sincerity that the American Bandstand 40th Anniversary Special is going to be dynamite, mainly because of all the great old film clips, which include appearances by everyone from Fabian, Bobby Rydell, Chubby Checker and Frankie Avalon to Nal Diamond, Michael Jackson and Madonna. And there will also be guests, many of whom you coo bet partially owe the success of their careen to Americom Bandstand. Alabama, Boys 11 Men, Nal Diamond, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Dom McLean and Luther Vandrom are scheduled to perform. Other stars, such as Pat Boone, hammer, Barry Manilow, Reba McEntire, Johnny Mathis, John Melleneamp, Spinal Tap and Carry Shandfing, willshare their memories. Them there's the all-star band led by the great Bo Diddley.• The Gnenp is weird, but interesting: Greg Allman, Frankie Avalon, Skmsk Baster, David Cassidy, Stanley Clarke, Clarence Chou, Sheila E., Jobs Entwistle, Uta Ford, lames Ingram, 'Doe' Kspka, Donnie Osmond, Johnny Rivera, Tam Seott, Lee Thornburg, Joe Walsh and Ku Weisberg. Like Atmierieaw Bandstand, t6a band Inas something for everyone, -,•." ! $A Pull-out Section In uncertain times it's more important than ever to invest wisely. There is such a wide range of high-quality products and name brands at widely varying prices that it's almost impossible to make a choice. Few people realize the essential element in getting the full effect of the music is how the sound is reflected off the wall and ceilings. It's this deflection of sound which makes the live orchestra sound so exciting to the audience. '_Many top manufacturers have tried to address the acoustical problems encountered in the home with different designs of loud speakers. These will give the listener the closest reproduction of the five concert -hall sound. Over the past few years there have been quantum leaps in what has been achieved by audio engineers and designers. Some of the latest advances in the audio speakers field have been made by a local Canadian company, Mirage of Scarborough. Their new line of M -Series and 90 -Series speakers have the edge on competitors. All are of thoroughly modern designs adaptable to all types of homes and apartments. The M -Series consists of three models in three different sizes, all with different output characteristics. One of the most unique features the designers achieved in this range is their special Bipolar technology. Most speakers radiate the sound outward in a teardrop pattern. Not the new Mirages. They disperse the sound in a 360 -degree radius around the speaker, to create an ultra -realistic effect for the listener. The designers set themselves the mandate of achieving musical reality. By all accounts they succeeded. Editor's Choice magazine describes the Mirage M-1 as a miracle from Canada. fligh Fidelity magazine proclaimed it as their product of the year. The list goes on and on. But perhaps the highest honor was won at the 199 Consumer Electronics shows when the M-3 model received the prestigious Design and Engineering .Award. It has taken countless hours of painstaking research and development to create a range of products in the forefront of audio technology. The man who must receive the most credit is innovative designer Ian Paisley, Mirage's chief scientist and an acknowledged master of TRILLIUM CABLE 751 McKay Road, Pickering, Ontario, Canada LI W 3E2 TEL: (416) 438-5807 FAX. The top and sides are black cloth trim. The three models in the M -Series are designed to handle amplifiers ranging from 75 to 500 watts, depending on the model chosen. For those who want a really top quality sound reproduction without the size of the _M -Series range of speakers, there is the Mirage 90 Series. These are smaller in size, but equally big on sound reproduction. This 6 -unit series encompasses the Bi - Polar technology of the M -Series and all the clarity associated with the 1Iiraep name. This provides the listener with ultra - realistic sound staging and imagine, by dispersing sound in a virtually omni- directional pattern. The 90 -Series can handle amplifiers rangine in power from 25 to 200 watts, while having a maximum output of 200 watts at the top of the range. Both series of loudspeakers were designed and tested for thousands of hours with the ultimate instrument, the human car. It was only after the group of trained listeners made its final recommendations that the Mirage ranee came into existence. Audiophiles looking for a speaker in the PC $3,000 -and -up range may well find this made -in -Canada product more suitable to their needs than anything else available in The Mirage M-1 the world. It's possible an enthusiast will not believe his ears when he encounters the Mirage range of loudspeakers. But just barely. Region council on April 29 approved a net region levy of more than $88 million — 9.7 per cent more than last year's total. For the "Nei -age property taxpayer that will mean $37 more on a region tax bill of 5385. For the average homeowner in Ajax with a house assessed at $22,000, the region increase will mean an additional $32 a year. In Pickering, the average homeowner with a house assessed at 525,424, the increase adds 545 to their bill. In an effort to pare down a 1992 region budget initially forecast at more than 28 per cent above last vear, serious cuts were made. With the exception of mandated social service staff hirings, no additional administrative staff will be added in 1992. In fact, many part time positions will be cut. However, no permanent full time staff are affected. Vacant positions won't be filled. Brock Mayor Don Hadden, the region's finance committee chairman. Rdm:tte" mixed P about this year's budget. "It's a budget not as bad as it could be, or as good as we'd like it to be," he told council. "It's been a long and arduous task." Finance Commissioner ,Jack Gartley said paring down this year's budget will have a large impact in future years. He projected a 25.4 per cent region tax increase as early as 1993. "One year we're going to be faced with a major increase," he told council. "I don't think we'll be able to do anything about it." Social services is one of only The Weekend Bay News, May fit, 9, 10, 1992 Aly Durham I two budget areas increased over last year's levels. A projected budget increase of 29 per cent was pared down to 13 per cent for a region share total of approximately 57.4 mdiion. However, Whitby Mayor Tom Edwards, the health and social services committee chairman. warned there are no guarantees additional money w.11 L needed. Tf 6,.nerai welfare assistance rises as rapidly as it did a year ago, then council would have to provide more money to pay its share. Edwards said the budget forced the chop of six permanent part-time daycare positions. These were all -female, early childhood education staff who worked four hours a day, five days a week. The police budget received a 9.3 per cent increase_ for a total of 550.6 million. While no current staff were affected. additional uniform:; i.iliarr personnel won't be hired in 1992. However, negotiations with staff are continuing. More money could be needed if a settlement is more than what the department has budgeted. Most other region departments will have to get by with even less money than last year. Tho works department loses 10.9 per cent of last year's approximately $9.8 million budget. This year's budget amounts to approximately 8.7 million. Increased waste management costs due to higher tipping fees charged by Metro Toronto at Brock West landfill will add an additional charge to households. Pickering residents will pay an additional S28 a year on their region share of taxes. Ajax residents pay another 820 a vear. The planning department receives 1.6 per cent less than last year. Finance and auiriinistration receives 0.3 per cent less. W O.S.M.T. Review Classes, register now!
