Pickering
By Michael Maunder
A 27 -page strategic plan for Pickering's growth over the next 10
vears has been released for circulation to ratepayers groups and
anyone interested.
The plan has been developed by senior town staff after private
:eetings with citizen groups last spring and a staff -council retreat in
December. After comments have been received, a final draft will
come to sound in June.
The plan gives a brief history of Pickering's growth since
becoming a town in 1974, and lays out general directions for the
suture.
The history section points out that employment growth in
Pickering has been below the level of other municipalities around
Toronto. The tam's big growth has been residential — particularly
low density single family housing — and the plan calk for several
changes -
It encourages mtensi cation, a compact urban form that reduces
Waal sprawl and uses existing roads and infrastructure. It predicts
smaller households and a strong demand for special haling for
seniors and group homes.
If the town is going to meet the challenge of offering singles,
young couples, semors, single -parent families and the disabled a
chance to Eve in Pickering, it will be necessary to find ways to get

Environment
The plan's environmental protection is concentrated on the
existing rural area. is housing projections indicate full development
of the existing urban area.
Designated for protection are Frenchman's Bay, the
Duf Ws Creek and the Oak Ridges Moraine. The plan tally of
identif $ng and preset Ang natural resources and systems, but does
not define systems.^
Among other concepts the two plans to consider are: walking
trails through these systeas, an arts ar&e in the downtown area, a _
pedestrian link over Highway 401 td the GO Rail station, and a
NW& network across the town.
_Copies of the plan are available from the town deck's office.

Local students don't believe in marriage until later 20's

"Emotional and financial
support, as well as a
dependence on another human
being...", answered a local high
school student when asked in a
survey what marriage meant to
him.
A number of high school
students age 17 to 18 were
interviewed and surveyed
recently about themselves and
their views on marriage.
Ten selected students were
surveyed. Six others were
interviewed. This is the result.
Males consider marrying from
ages 25 to 29. The majority
believes in pre -marital sex.

Solo women drivers learn attacker defence
BS► dohs McGowan
Centeniiw college
*maism intern
Tonight it's Port Perry.
Tamorrow it could be Uxbridge,
Newcastle or Claremont.
Sounds like a road show,
doesn't it? Well, it is, but one
with a very serious objective —
the protection of women driving
alone.
"The Travelling Alone
Program began 18 months
ago," says Gerry Smith, Whitby
OPP public information officer.
"A branch of the Victorian
Order of Nurses had women
driving alone and going into
strange homes. VON asked if
we could provide some
safeguards."
Since then over 9,000
women beard Smith lay out
sensible gAdelines. Almost 170
workshops were held. Al some
of these {ane proceedings were
video taped.
Travels
This was done recently at
Belleville for Proctor and
Gamble. With locations across
the country, the company is
now able to assist all of its
employees.
While S^:ith's work is
primarily in Durham Region, the
skill he developed in his
presentation is shared across the
province. There are now Dubuc
information officers in the OPP
at Port Credit, Beaverton,
Caledon, Aurora and
Downsview.
Downsview is the latest
addition. The officer there,
Dave Hall, joined Gerry Smith
on April 6.
A presentation was made to
the Industrial Accident
Prevention Association at the
Metro Convention Centre in
Toronto.
Unfortunate
"I often tell meetings," Smith
says, "it's sad life today forces us
to get together to talk about
dangerous possibilities. But we
have to face the facts."
Facing the facts means
people have to perceive what is
going on. Having done that,
steps should be taken to avoid
risky situations.
When something develops,
then the individual :rust
determine what to do. The
following are alternatives.
Alternatives
• Smith advises women to do
a quick scan of the outside of
their vehicle and a quick check
inside before entering. If the car
is a 2 -door model, flip the seat
forward when leaving. Any
change upon return is a warning
sign.
If vour car breaks down.
pull well over on the shoulder
and activate 4 -way flashers. A
Call Police sign should be in
every woman's car. Lock all
doors. If someone stops to
help, roll down the window only
enough to ask the person to
telephone the police for you.
On average, a police cruiser will
pass any given spot in Durham
Region on Highway 401 about
once every 30 minutes. When
police arrive they will call a
reputable tow -truck driver if
necessary. Charges should be
approximately $70. Smith
warns of people who want to
charge up to $300.
Being caught on a country
road can be more hazardous and
help might take longer. Under
no Circumstances should women
take a ride with someone they
don't know. They are advised to
ask people to call t..e police, h
might be necessary to say to a
supposed helper who seems
threatening, "Thanks for

stopping. You're the third one
whos done it. The police will be
here any minute."
• Smith tells women to use
any and all means at their
disposal to get away from an
attacker. "Think about a game
plan. Remember, there's no
such thing as half -way defending
yourself."
• Car keys provide an instant
weapon if placed between the
fingers. Aim for the eyes or
between the attacker's legs.
Don't expect an assailant to wait
until you get mace or anything
else out of your purse.
• Car doors should always be
locked while driving. This is
especially true in the city where
unlocked doors invite intruders
to hop in.
Evolved
Over the 18 months of its
operations, changes have been
made to the 90 -minute
presentation. Safety in hotel
rooms is often discussed.
Various aspects of safety for
seniors are also presented,
depending upon the audience.
Safety while travelling by bus
is another topic. Women are
especially advised to sit near the
driver and not to get into
isolated areas of the bus,
particularly where they may be
pinned up against a window.
An invaluable help for women
driving alone is the Call Police
sign. Different versions of these
are available, sponsored by The
Co -Operators insurance and by
Bell Cellular.
Sources
To date 25,000 signs have
been distributed. Durham
Region health care services are
contemplating the provision of
signs for all female employees.
Clear cut instructions are
available by calling Gerry Smith
of the Whitby OPP detachment
at 668-3388.
"1 want to hear from any
group wanting the presentation,"
Smith says.
"It is in great demand though.
Right now we're booked up
through April and May."

Resume 2 -year search for missing Pickering teen
By Dan IrMdew
The search for missing
Pickering teenager Julie Stanton
continues next month.
During a press conference at
Durham Region Police's 18
Division in Whitby Monday
afternoon, Julie's parents John
and Patricia made a sombre
appeal for volunteers to help in
a series of searches they are
organizing beginning May 23.
Their 14 -year-old teenager
went missing two years ago to
the day of this week's press
conference. Julie Stanton was
last seen Easter Monday 1990
getting into a car only a short
distance away from her home
on Maury Crescent.
Searches will be led by
professionally -trained experts.
While it's yet to be determined
who these experts will be, or
where they will come from, they
will likely come from universities
or provincial forestry and natural
resources agencies.
Weekends
A series of 4 -hour searches
will be conducted every Saturday
and Sunday until Julie is found,
her parents vowed. A Port
Perry region police station will
serve as a focal point for the
volunteer efforts.
Areas already searched, and
others that have not, will be
scoured.
"We're going to go on and
turn every stone until we find
her," Patricia Stanton told the
gathered media.
"I think if you look long and
hard enough — she is out there.
We have to find her."
Nightmare
Patricia Stanton called the last
two years since her daughter's
disappearance one long
nightmare.
"The night my daughter didn't
come home 1 knew there was
something terribly wrong," she
recalled.
The Stantons are confident
they will find their daughter
during this round of searches —
since past efforts were not co-
ordinated by experts.
Durham Region Detective
Herb Curwain said search efforts
will begin late next month, since
the marshy area being combed
must be given time for
groundwater and snow to
dissipate. Police will provide
support for the efforts.
Areas to be searched will be
announced on the day efforts
begin. Curwain said four full-
time police investigators are still
working on the Julie Stanton
case
Charged
Peter John Stark, 47, is in
police custody and charged with
first-degree murder. He will be
tried for Julie's death on a date
tentatively set for Aug. 4.
The Stanton were advised
they should not discuss the case
since it is pending in the courts.
But when asked whether she
was surprised police had made
an arrest, Patricia Stanton
replied not really.
Volunteers for the May 23
search are asked to meet at the
Port Perry police station at 9
a.m. People are advised to wear
rubber boots or hip waders, a
long -sleeve shirt and a light
jacket — depending on the
weather.
Only adults are asked to join
in the effort.

Schools must
-be built now.
It's sad indeed when children have
to go without schools because the
elected. chief magistrates are so
scared to death of the Scrooges in
the community that practically no

But that's the way it is today —
and has been for years — here in
Pickering -Ajax towns and the rest of
Ontario.
There never, ever is any excuse for
letting children go without schools.
The situation today is absolute
madness!

Unprovoked panic attacks, often described as
"the most terrifying experience Ive ever had", can
be a sign of an illness called panic disorder. The
majority of people know very little about it, despite
a rising tide of media interest in the problem.
The lack of awareness and widespread
misunderstanding suggest that millions of people
are suffering needlessly from a treatable condition.
Knowing this there is a great need for the medical
profession to place panic disorder high on the
health agenda and increase diagnosis and access to
care for those with this problem.
One reason panic disorder often goes
undetected and untreated is that it is widely
equated with routine bouts of stress, anxiety or
fear. A majority attribute it to over -reaction to
everyday problems.
This failure to identify panic disorder for what it
is — a serious illness requiring understanding and
treatment — can have devastating clinical and
financial consequences.
Treatment
Whilt effective and affordable therapies are
available for panic disorder, few people with this
t7lness receive appropriate treatment. This shows
there is a definite need for increased awareness by
both the generai pL&c and the medical profession
—its symptoms and the treatments available.
With approprate treatment, as many as 90 per
cent of people with this illness can be-eaeved of
the repeated and unexpected ;bouts of

problem-'
with panic disorder sometimes see as many as 10
doctors before being diagnosed. This adds to the
patient's distress and also puts further demands on
our already overburdened medical system.
If untreated, panic disorder can be disabling —
greatly limiting a person's range of activities and
severely impairing the quality of life. Effective
therapies are available for panic disorder, a
condition that will affect one in 75 people during
their lifetime.
Research
Recent research has shown certain medications
as well as cognitive and behavioral therapies can
effectively reduce or eliminate the panic attacks
associated with panic disorder. There are three
classes of drugs that have been found to be
beneficial for persons with panic disorder. These
medications include Tricyclic Antidepressants,
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors, and
Benzodiazepines.
The other main type of treatment is cognitive -
behavioral therapy, which is designed to change
mistaken beliefs about panic and to help the
patient re-enter feared situations. Any treatment
that fails to produce an effect within eight to 10
weeks should be reassessed and may require
referral or consultation.

Six-year-old Ellen is a pretty

It is hoped she will eventually

Though delayed in man
areas, Ellen appears to
understand what is said to her.
She can use sentences made up
of several words.
She has named all her dolls
and holds conversations with
them as she plays. She enjoys
playing with dolls, playing ball,
and being with other children.
She loves goinq to school

Curling season over again at Annandale
By An Eassim
Curling at Annandale has come to a close for
the summer. The ice was put to rest as a skating
rink April 12 after an excellent season. The
Canada We logo painted onto sheet five is now
history. Donalda will be the host club next year.
The last event of the season was a new event
for the club. it was a club mixed championship.
Ali three mixed leagues participated. The overall
winner was no surprise, with Gord Norton taking
the honors.
He added to the men's competitive club
championship which he won the week previous.
On his mixed rink are wife Wilma and Gerry and
Sonia McKenna. They won the A side over Bill
Goodchild acid 'his team.
B side was won by the Adrian Shewrhuk rink
over Barry Moylan's team. With Adrian were
Susan Kielly, Dave Kielly and wife Susan at lead.
Adrian won the regular season Thursday Mixed
title also. The other division winners in that league
were Bob Evans in B, Dave Wake in C and Don
Critchley in D.
The closing banquet for the curlers was held at
Annandale April 11. Club president Gerry
Pinkney reflected on the highlights of the waling
season, and thanked Donnie Read, the icemaker,
for skill and time invested in making fine ice.
Gerry Pinkney is to be complimented for his
strong year as club president — particularly for the
photograph gallery of past presidents and the
newsletter he initiated.

Poachers
new
The natural resources ministry
is appealing to the public for
help in hunting down illegal
poachers.
Spring is a high activity time
of year for migrating birds and
fish, or other animals. They
become easy prey for the traps
and snares of poachers.
The ministry reminds the
public that trapping, snaring or
holding captive any native
species without a ministry
permit is an illegal offence.
Capturing or selling migratory
birds is prohibited. Snagging,
spearing or netting game fish is
also illegal.
The public can help by
watching and recording accurate
information. Helpful
information includes dates,
times, locations and descriptions
of poachers and their vehicles.
A reward of up to $1,5oo for
information leading to an arrest
is offered. Information received
is completely anonymous — you
don't have to identify yourseif or
testify in court.
